1 Ο Κύριος είπε:

«Να μην κατασκευάσετε είδωλα ούτε να στήσετε ξυλόγλυπτα και πέτρινες στήλες ούτε να βάλετε στη χώρα σας αγάλματα για να τα προσκυνάτε· εγώ, ο Κύριος, είμαι ο Θεός σας. 2 Να τηρείτε τα Σάββατά μου και να σέβεστε το αγιαστήριό μου. Εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος.

3 »Αν ζείτε σύμφωνα με τους νόμους μου και τηρείτε στην πράξη τις εντολές μου, 4 τότε θα σας στέλνω τις βροχές στον καιρό τους, η γη θα δίνει τα γεννήματά της και τα δέντρα του κάμπου τον καρπό τους. 5 Το αλώνισμα του σταριού στη χώρα σας θα κρατάει ως τον τρυγητό των αμπελιών, κι ο τρυγητός ως τη σπορά· θα έχετε άφθονο ψωμί για να χορταίνετε, και θα κατοικείτε στη χώρα σας με ασφάλεια.

6 »Θα χαρίσω ειρήνη στη χώρα και κανείς δε θα ταράζει τον ύπνο σας· θα εξαφανίσω τα καταστρεπτικά ζώα από τη χώρα σας, και δε θα κινδυνεύετε από σφαγή. 7 Θα καταδιώκετε τους εχθρούς σας κι αυτοί θα υποκύπτουν μπροστά στο ξίφος σας. 8 Πέντε από σας θα καταδιώκουν εκατό, κι εκατό από σας θα καταδιώκουν δέκα χιλιάδες· και οι εχθροί σας θα πέφτουν μπροστά στο ξίφος σας.

9 »Θα σας ευλογήσω, θα σας κάνω γόνιμους και θα σας πληθύνω· θα μείνω πιστός στη διαθήκη που έχω κάνει μαζί σας. 10 Θα τρώτε από την παλιά συγκομιδή και θα σας περισσεύουν τόσα σιτηρά, που θα πρέπει να τα πετάτε, για να κάνετε χώρο για τη νέα σοδειά. 11 Θα στήσω ανάμεσά σας την κατοικία μου και ποτέ δε θα σας αποστραφώ. 12 Θα περπατάω ανάμεσά σας και θα είμαι ο Θεός σας κι εσείς θα είστε ο λαός μου. 13 Εγώ, ο Κύριος, είμαι ο Θεός σας, που σας έβγαλα από την Αίγυπτο, για να μην είστε πια δούλοι. Εγώ σύντριψα τα δεσμά της δουλείας σας και σας έκανα να βαδίζετε με το κεφάλι ψηλά».

14,15 «Αν όμως απορρίψετε τους νόμους μου, αν δεν με υπακούσετε και δεν τηρήσετε όλες αυτές τις εντολές μου, αν αθετήσετε τη διαθήκη μου, 16 τότε κι εγώ θα σας τιμωρήσω: Θα σας στείλω συμφορές, ανίατες ασθένειες και πυρετό, που θα σας εξασθενίσουν τα μάτια και θα σας φθείρουν τη ζωή· άδικα θα σπέρνετε τις σπορές σας, γιατί απ’ αυτές θα τρέφονται οι εχθροί σας. 17 Θα στραφώ εναντίον σας και θα νικηθείτε από τους εχθρούς σας· εκείνοι που σας μισούν θα σας υποδουλώσουν· και θα φεύγετε ακόμα κι όταν κανείς δεν θα σας καταδιώκει.

18 »Και αν παρ’ όλα αυτά δε με ακούσετε, θα επταπλασιάσω την τιμωρία μου για τις αμαρτίες σας. 19 Θα συντρίψω την ισχυρογνωμοσύνη σας· και θα κάνω τον ουρανό σας σίδερο και τη γη σας χαλκό. 20 Μάταια θα σπαταλάτε τη δύναμή σας· η γη δεν θα σας δίνει πια τα γεννήματά της και δε θα καρπίζουν τα δέντρα της.

21 »Αν εξακολουθήσετε να στρέφεστε εναντίον μου και δεν εννοείτε να με υπακούσετε, τότε θα επταπλασιάσω την τιμωρία για τις αμαρτίες σας. 22 Θα εξαπολύσω εναντίον σας τα άγρια θηρία, που θα αρπάξουν τα παιδιά σας, θα σκοτώσουν τα ζώα σας και θα σας αποδεκατίσουν σε τέτοιο σημείο που οι δρόμοι σας να μείνουν έρημοι.

23 »Κι αν με όλα αυτά δεν συνετιστείτε αλλά εξακολουθήσετε να στρέφεστε εναντίον μου, 24 τότε και εγώ θα στραφώ εναντίον σας. Θα σας χτυπήσω εφτά φορές σκληρότερα για τις αμαρτίες σας. 25 Θα κάνω να πέσει πάνω σας σφαγή που θα λάβει εκδίκηση για τη διαθήκη που παραβιάσατε. Κι αν συγκεντρωθείτε στις πόλεις σας, εγώ θα στείλω θανατικό ανάμεσά σας και θα αναγκαστείτε να παραδοθείτε στην εξουσία του εχθρού. 26 Όταν θα σας στερήσω το ψωμί σας, ένας μόνο φούρνος θα αρκεί σε δέκα γυναίκες για να ψήσουν το ψωμί σας και θα σας το φέρνουν μετρημένο. Θα τρώτε και δε θα χορταίνετε.

27 »Κι αν με όλα αυτά δεν με υπακούσετε αλλά εξακολουθήσετε να εναντιώνεστε στο θέλημά μου, 28 τότε κι εγώ θα σας εναντιωθώ με θυμό και θα σας τιμωρήσω για τις αμαρτίες σας επταπλάσια απ’ ό,τι στο παρελθόν. 29 Θα φάτε τις σάρκες των γιων σας και τις σάρκες των θυγατέρων σας. 30 Θα σας αποστραφώ και θα καταστρέψω τους ιερούς τόπους λατρείας σας, θα συντρίψω τα θυσιαστήρια των θυμιαμάτων σας, θα σωριάσω τα πτώματά σας πάνω στα νεκρά είδωλά σας. 31 Θα καταστρέψω τις πόλεις σας, θα ερημώσω τους ναούς σας και δε θα δέχομαι πια την ευχάριστη μυρωδιά των θυσιών σας. 32 Εγώ ο ίδιος θα ερημώσω τη χώρα και θα φρίξουν γι’ αυτήν οι εχθροί σας, που θα ’ρθούν να κατοικήσουνε σ’ αυτήν. 33 Θα σας διασκορπίσω ανάμεσα στα έθνη και θα σας ρίξω σε πόλεμο· η χώρα σας θα ερημωθεί και οι πόλεις σας θα μεταβληθούν σε ερείπια. 34,35 Τότε η γη θα ξεκουραστεί, όσον καιρό θα μείνει έρημη κι εσείς θα βρίσκεστε αιχμάλωτοι στη χώρα των εχθρών σας. Θ’ αναπαυθεί η γη και θ’ απολαύσει τα σαββατικά της έτη, που δεν είχε μπορέσει να τα απολαύσει όταν την κατοικούσατε εσείς.

36 »Θα γεμίσω με φόβο την καρδιά όσων από σας θα επιζήσουν μέσα στις εχθρικές χώρες. Ακόμη και στο θόρυβο ενός φύλλου που πέφτει, θα νομίζουν ότι τους κυνηγούν. Θα φεύγουν, όπως ένας φεύγει στη θέα του ξίφους και θα πέφτουν, χωρίς να τους καταδιώκει κανείς. 37 Θα σκοντάφτουν ο ένας πάνω στον άλλον, όπως αυτοί που φεύγουν μπροστά από τον εχθρό, κι ωστόσο κανείς δε θα τους καταδιώκει. Δε θα μπορείτε να αντιμετωπίσετε τους εχθρούς σας. 38 Θα πεθάνετε στην αιχμαλωσία και θα σας καταβροχθίσει η χώρα των εχθρών σας.

39 »Όσοι από σας επιζήσουν, θα χαθούν εξαιτίας της αμαρτίας τους στις χώρες των εχθρών σας· κι όχι μόνο για τις δικές τους αμαρτίες αλλά και για τις αμαρτίες των προγόνων τους. 40 Όταν όμως οι απόγονοί τους θ’ αναγνωρίσουν την αμαρτία τη δική τους και των προγόνων τους, δηλαδή την απιστία που μου έδειξαν όταν μου εναντιώνονταν 41 και έκαναν κι εμένα να εναντιωθώ σ’ αυτούς και να τους φέρω αιχμάλωτους στη χώρα των εχθρών τους, όταν λοιπόν θα έχουν πληρώσει για την αμαρτία τους και η σκληρή τους καρδιά θα έχει ταπεινωθεί, 42 τότε θα θυμηθώ τη διαθήκη μου με τον Ιακώβ, με τον Ισαάκ και με τον Αβραάμ, σχετικά με τη χώρα τους. 43 Η χώρα όμως πρώτα θα εγκαταλειφθεί απ’ αυτούς και θ’ απολαύσει τα σαββατικά της έτη όλο αυτό το διάστημα. Πρέπει να πληρώσουν για την αμαρτία τους, γιατί αγνόησαν τις εντολές μου και περιφρόνησαν τους νόμους μου. 44 Αλλά και τότε ακόμη, όταν θα βρίσκονται στη χώρα των εχθρών τους, εγώ δεν θα τους απαρνηθώ, ούτε θα τους αποστραφώ σε σημείο που να τους εξαφανίσω τελείως. Δε θα ακυρώσω τη διαθήκη μου μαζί τους, γιατί εγώ, ο Κύριος, είμαι ο Θεός τους. 45 Για χάρη τους θα λάβω υπόψη μου τη διαθήκη μου με τους προγόνους τους, όταν τους έβγαλα από την Αίγυπτο μπροστά στα μάτια των άλλων εθνών, για να γίνω Θεός τους. Εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος».

46 Αυτές είναι οι διαταγές και οι νόμοι, που καθόρισε ο Κύριος ανάμεσα σ’ αυτόν τον ίδιο και στους Ισραηλίτες, στο όρος Σινά, με το Μωυσή.

2 Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD.

3 If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; 4 Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. 5 And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely. 6 And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.*26.6 rid: Heb. cause to cease 7 And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. 8 And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. 9 For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you. 10 And ye shall eat old store, and bring forth the old because of the new. 11 And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you. 12 And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. 13 I am the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright.

14 But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments; 15 And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant: 16 I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.*26.16 over: Heb. upon 17 And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you. 18 And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. 19 And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass: 20 And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits.

21 And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins.*26.21 contrary…: or, at all adventures with me 22 I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your high ways shall be desolate. 23 And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me; 24 Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins. 25 And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. 26 And when I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight: and ye shall eat, and not be satisfied. 27 And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me; 28 Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins. 29 And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat. 30 And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you. 31 And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odours. 32 And I will bring the land into desolation: and your enemies which dwell therein shall be astonished at it. 33 And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste. 34 Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths, as long as it lieth desolate, and ye be in your enemies’ land; even then shall the land rest, and enjoy her sabbaths. 35 As long as it lieth desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it. 36 And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.*26.36 shaken: Heb. driven 37 And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies. 38 And ye shall perish among the heathen, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up. 39 And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies’ lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them.

40 If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me; 41 And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity: 42 Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land. 43 The land also shall be left of them, and shall enjoy her sabbaths, while she lieth desolate without them: and they shall accept of the punishment of their iniquity: because, even because they despised my judgments, and because their soul abhorred my statutes. 44 And yet for all that, when they be in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them: for I am the LORD their God. 45 But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their God: I am the LORD. 46 These are the statutes and judgments and laws, which the LORD made between him and the children of Israel in mount Sinai by the hand of Moses.
