1 Πάνω στο όρος Σινά ο Κύριος έδωσε εντολή στο Μωυσή 2 να πει στους Ισραηλίτες:

«Όταν θα μπείτε στη χώρα που εγώ θα σας δώσω, η γη πρέπει να αναπαύεται, να τηρεί ένα "Σάββατο" για τον Κύριο. 3 Έξι χρόνια θα σπέρνετε τα χωράφια σας, θα κλαδεύετε τα αμπέλια σας και θα συνάζετε τη σοδειά. 4 Ο έβδομος χρόνος, όμως, θα είναι σαββατικός, ένα έτος για ν’ αναπαυθεί η γη, σάββατο προς τιμήν του Κυρίου. Εκείνο το χρόνο δεν θα σπείρετε τα χωράφια σας, ούτε θα κλαδέψετε τα αμπέλια σας. 5 Δε θα θερίσετε ό,τι φύτρωσε μόνο του από τους σπόρους του περασμένου θερισμού και δε θα τρυγήσετε τα σταφύλια από τ’ αμπέλια σας, που έχουν μείνει ακλάδευτα. Θα είναι χρόνος αγρανάπαυσης. 6 Ακόμα, όμως, και το χρόνο αυτό η γη θα μπορέσει να σας θρέψει, εσάς, τους δούλους σας και τις δούλες σας, τους εργάτες σας και τους ξένους που μένουν μαζί σας. 7 Επίσης θα θρέψει τα κτήνη σας και τα άγρια ζώα της χώρας· ό,τι προϊόντα δώσει η γη θα είναι για τροφή τους.

8 »Έπειτα θα μετρήσετε εφτά εβδομάδες ετών, δηλαδή συνολικά σαράντα εννιά χρόνια. 9,10 Και τη δέκατη μέρα του έβδομου μήνα του πεντηκοστού έτους, θα ηχήσετε δυνατά τις σάλπιγγες σ’ όλη τη χώρα και θα το ανακηρύξετε άγιο· είναι το ιωβηλαίο έτος. Την ίδια εκείνη ημέρα του Εξιλασμού, θα κηρύξετε απελευθέρωση για όλους τους κατοίκους της χώρας. Κάθε ιδιοκτησία που έχει πουληθεί, θα επιστραφεί στον αρχικό ιδιοκτήτη της και καθένας που έχει πουληθεί ως δούλος, θα γυρίσει στην οικογένειά του. 11 Αυτό το πεντηκοστό έτος θα είναι για σας έτος ιωβηλαίο. Δεν θα σπέρνετε ούτε θα θερίζετε αυτό που βλασταίνει από μόνο του, ούτε θα τρυγάτε τα αμπέλια που θα έχουν μείνει ακλάδευτα. 12 Θα είναι έτος ιωβηλαίο, άγιο για σας. Θα τρώτε μόνον ό,τι θα βλασταίνει από μόνο του στα χωράφια.

13 »Κατά το ιωβηλαίο έτος, καθένας θα μπορεί να αποκτήσει πάλι την κυριότητα της ιδιοκτησίας του αν αυτή είχε πουληθεί. 14 Έτσι, όταν πουλάτε ή αγοράζετε, μην ξεγελάτε ο ένας τον άλλο. 15 Όταν αγοράζετε ή πουλάτε στο συμπολίτη σας θα υπολογίζετε τα χρόνια της συγκομιδής μέχρι το επόμενο ιωβηλαίο. 16 Όσο περισσότερα χρόνια απομένουν, τόσο μεγαλύτερη θα είναι η τιμή της αγοράς και όσο λιγότερα χρόνια απομένουν τόσο μικρότερη θα είναι· γιατί εκείνο που μεταβιβάζεται είναι ο αριθμός των χρόνων της συγκομιδής. 17 Κανείς σας να μην εκμεταλλεύεται το διπλανό του, αλλά να σέβεστε το Θεό σας· εγώ, ο Κύριος, είμαι ο Θεός σας.

18 »Να εκτελείτε τους νόμους μου, να τηρείτε τις εντολές μου στην πράξη, ώστε να κατοικήσετε ασφαλείς στη χώρα. 19 Η χώρα θα δίνει τον καρπό της και θα έχετε να τρώτε και να χορταίνετε· και θα ζείτε ασφαλείς. 20 Αλλά κάποιος μπορεί να ρωτήσει: "Τι θα φάμε τον έβδομο χρόνο, αφού δε θα σπείρουμε ούτε θα συνάξουμε τη συγκομιδή μας;" 21 Εγώ θα σας στέλνω την ευλογία μου τον έκτο χρόνο και η γη θα παράγει σοδειά για τρία χρόνια. 22 Όταν θα σπέρνετε τον όγδοο χρόνο, θα έχετε ακόμη να τρώτε από την παλιά σοδειά. Ως τον ένατο χρόνο, που θα έρθει η νέα σοδειά, θα τρώτε ακόμη από την παλιά».

23 «Η γη δεν πρέπει να πωλείται οριστικά, γιατί ανήκει σ’ εμένα κι εσείς είστε σαν ξένοι που τους δόθηκε η άδεια να την κατοικούν. 24 Γι’ αυτό, σ’ όλη εκείνη τη χώρα, που θα την έχετε ιδιοκτησία σας, πρέπει να αναγνωρίζετε το δικαίωμα εξαγοράς της γης: 25 Αν ένας Ισραηλίτης φτωχύνει κι αναγκαστεί να πουλήσει ένα μέρος από την ιδιοκτησία του, τότε ο πλησιέστερος συγγενής του έχει το δικαίωμα εξαγοράς· πρέπει να έρθει και να πάρει πίσω με εξαγορά αυτό που πούλησε ο συγγενής του. 26 Είναι δυνατόν κάποιος που δεν έχει κανένα συγγενή με δικαίωμα εξαγοράς, να ευπορήσει αργότερα και να μπορεί να προσφέρει ο ίδιος το τίμημα για την εξαγορά. 27 Τότε πρέπει να αφαιρέσει τα χρόνια που πέρασαν από την ημέρα που έγινε η πώληση, και να πληρώσει στον δανειστή του τα υπόλοιπα χρόνια μέχρι το επόμενο ιωβηλαίο· έτσι θα ξαναποκτήσει την ιδιοκτησία του. 28 Αν όμως δεν μπορεί να πληρώσει το τίμημα για να εξαγοράσει το κτήμα του, αυτό θα παραμείνει στα χέρια του δανειστή του ως το επόμενο ιωβηλαίο. Το χρόνο εκείνο το κτήμα θ’ αποδεσμευτεί και θα γυρίσει στον αρχικό ιδιοκτήτη του.

29 »Αν κάποιος αναγκαστεί να πουλήσει μια κατοικία που βρίσκεται σε περιτειχισμένη πόλη, έχει δικαίωμα εξαγοράς επί ένα χρόνο από την πώληση. 30 Όταν παρέλθει ο χρόνος, τότε το σπίτι αυτό θα ανήκει για πάντα στον αγοραστή και στους απογόνους του. Δεν θ’ αποδεσμευτεί στο ιωβηλαίο. 31 Τα σπίτια όμως που βρίσκονται σε χωριά μη περιτειχισμένα, πρέπει να θεωρούνται χωράφια. Ο αρχικός ιδιοκτήτης έχει το δικαίωμα εξαγοράς, και στο ιωβηλαίο έτος το σπίτι θ’ αποδεσμεύεται. 32 Όσο για τις πόλεις των Λευιτών, και για τα σπίτια που έχουν στην ιδιοκτησία τους σ’ αυτές τις πόλεις, οι Λευίτες διατηρούν πάντοτε το δικαίωμα εξαγοράς. 33 Αν κάποιος αγοράσει σπίτι από τους Λευίτες, σε μια απ’ αυτές τις πόλεις, και το σπίτι δεν εξαγοραστεί, η αγορά αυτή θα ακυρώνεται με το ιωβηλαίο. Γιατί τα σπίτια που έχουν οι Λευίτες μέσα στις πόλεις τους είναι η μόνιμη ιδιοκτησία τους ανάμεσα στους υπόλοιπους Ισραηλίτες. 34 Ο βοσκότοπος γύρω από τις πόλεις των Λευιτών δεν επιτρέπεται να πουληθεί· είναι παντοτινή ιδιοκτησία τους».

35 «Αν ένας συμπατριώτης σου, που ζει κοντά σου, φτωχύνει και δυστυχήσει, εσύ πρέπει να τον ενισχύσεις, όπως θα έκανες αν ήταν ξένος ή πάροικος, ώστε να μπορέσει να ζήσει κι αυτός μαζί σου. 36,37 Δεν επιτρέπεται να του πάρεις τόκο ή κάποιο πρόσθετο ποσό από τα χρήματα που θα του δανείσεις, ούτε θα βγάλεις κανένα κέρδος από την τροφή που θα του πουλήσεις. Να υπολογίζεις το Θεό σου, ώστε να επιβιώσει κι ο συμπατριώτης σου μαζί σου. 38 Εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας, που σας έβγαλα από την Αίγυπτο, για να σας δώσω τη χώρα της Χαναάν και να είμαι Θεός σας.

39 »Αν ο συμπατριώτης σου, που ζει κοντά σου, φτωχύνει και πουληθεί σ’ εσένα, δεν πρέπει να τον μεταχειρίζεσαι σαν δούλο. 40 Ας μείνει στο σπίτι σου σαν μισθωτός εργάτης και να σε υπηρετεί ως το επόμενο ιωβηλαίο έτος. 41 Τότε θα φύγει από το σπίτι σου μαζί με τα παιδιά του και θα γυρίσει στους συγγενείς του και στην ιδιοκτησία των προγόνων του. 42 Οι Ισραηλίτες είναι δούλοι μου, που τους έβγαλα από την Αίγυπτο· δεν πρέπει να πουλιούνται ως δούλοι. 43 Δεν πρέπει να τους συμπεριφέρεσαι με σκληρότητα, αλλά να υπολογίζεις το Θεό σου. 44 Ο δούλος και η δούλη σου, όσους έχεις, θα πρέπει να προέρχονται από τα γύρω σας έθνη· από ’κει θα αγοράζεις δούλους. 45 Επίσης θ’ αγοράζεις από τα παιδιά των πάροικων που ζουν ανάμεσά σας και γεννήθηκαν στη χώρα σας, κι απ’ τις οικογένειές τους. Αυτοί μπορούν να αποτελούν ιδιοκτησία σας. 46 Μπορείτε να τους μεταβιβάζετε κληρονομικά στους γιους σας, που μετά από σας θα τους έχουν ιδιοκτησία τους. Μπορείτε να τους έχετε δούλους σας για πάντα· αλλά ανάμεσα στους συμπατριώτες σας τους Ισραηλίτες κανένας ας μην καταδυναστεύει τον άλλον με σκληρότητα.

47 »Αν ένας ξένος ή πάροικος που μένει στον τόπο σου πλουτίσει, ενώ κάποιος Ισραηλίτης, που συναλλάσσεται μαζί του, φτωχύνει και πουληθεί στον ξένο ή στον πάροικο ή σε κάποιο μέλος της οικογένειάς τους, 48 διατηρεί και μετά την πώλησή του το δικαίωμα να εξαγοραστεί. Μπορεί να τον εξαγοράσει ένας από τ’ αδέρφια του, 49 ο θείος του ή ο ξάδερφός του, κάποιος από τους πλησιέστερους συγγενείς του. Επίσης, αν αυτός ο ίδιος έχει στο μεταξύ κερδίσει αρκετά χρήματα, μπορεί να εξαγοράσει τον εαυτό του. 50 Πρέπει, από κοινού μ’ εκείνον που τον αγόρασε, να υπολογίσουν το χρόνο από τότε που πουλήθηκε ως το επόμενο ιωβηλαίο έτος και να καθορίσουν την τιμή της πώλησής του με βάση το ημερομίσθιο που δίνεται σ’ έναν εργάτη, και ανάλογα με τα χρόνια που έμεινε με τον αγοραστή του: 51 Αν υπολείπονται πολλά χρόνια, οφείλει να επιστρέψει ένα μέρος από το ποσόν της αγοράς του, ανάλογα μ’ αυτά τα χρόνια. 52 Αν αντιθέτως υπολείπονται λίγα χρόνια ως το ιωβηλαίο έτος, θα υπολογίσει και θα πληρώσει απλώς την εξαγορά του, ανάλογα με τα χρόνια που υπολείπονται. 53 Θα θεωρηθεί ως εργάτης μισθωμένος με το χρόνο. Κι αυτός που τον έχει στην υπηρεσία του δεν πρέπει να τον μεταχειρίζεται βάναυσα. 54 Αν ο Ισραηλίτης δούλος δεν εξαγοραστεί με έναν απ’ αυτούς τους τρόπους, θα απελευθερωθεί στο ιωβηλαίο έτος μαζί με τα παιδιά του. 55 Όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες είναι δικοί μου δούλοι· εγώ τους έβγαλα από την Αίγυπτο. Εγώ, ο Κύριος, είμαι ο Θεός σας».

8 And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years. 9 Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land.*25.9 of the jubile: Heb. loud of sound 10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family. 11 A jubile shall that fiftieth year be unto you: ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself in it, nor gather the grapes in it of thy vine undressed. 12 For it is the jubile; it shall be holy unto you: ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field. 13 In the year of this jubile ye shall return every man unto his possession. 14 And if thou sell ought unto thy neighbour, or buyest ought of thy neighbour’s hand, ye shall not oppress one another: 15 According to the number of years after the jubile thou shalt buy of thy neighbour, and according unto the number of years of the fruits he shall sell unto thee: 16 According to the multitude of years thou shalt increase the price thereof, and according to the fewness of years thou shalt diminish the price of it: for according to the number of the years of the fruits doth he sell unto thee. 17 Ye shall not therefore oppress one another; but thou shalt fear thy God: for I am the LORD your God.

18 Wherefore ye shall do my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them; and ye shall dwell in the land in safety. 19 And the land shall yield her fruit, and ye shall eat your fill, and dwell therein in safety. 20 And if ye shall say, What shall we eat the seventh year? behold, we shall not sow, nor gather in our increase: 21 Then I will command my blessing upon you in the sixth year, and it shall bring forth fruit for three years. 22 And ye shall sow the eighth year, and eat yet of old fruit until the ninth year; until her fruits come in ye shall eat of the old store.

23 The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine; for ye are strangers and sojourners with me.*25.23 for ever: or, to be quite cut off: Heb. for cutting off 24 And in all the land of your possession ye shall grant a redemption for the land.

25 If thy brother be waxen poor, and hath sold away some of his possession, and if any of his kin come to redeem it, then shall he redeem that which his brother sold. 26 And if the man have none to redeem it, and himself be able to redeem it;*25.26 himself…: Heb. his hand hath attained and found sufficiency 27 Then let him count the years of the sale thereof, and restore the overplus unto the man to whom he sold it; that he may return unto his possession. 28 But if he be not able to restore it to him, then that which is sold shall remain in the hand of him that hath bought it until the year of jubile: and in the jubile it shall go out, and he shall return unto his possession. 29 And if a man sell a dwelling house in a walled city, then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold; within a full year may he redeem it. 30 And if it be not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house that is in the walled city shall be established for ever to him that bought it throughout his generations: it shall not go out in the jubile. 31 But the houses of the villages which have no wall round about them shall be counted as the fields of the country: they may be redeemed, and they shall go out in the jubile.*25.31 they may…: Heb. redemption belongeth unto it 32 Notwithstanding the cities of the Levites, and the houses of the cities of their possession, may the Levites redeem at any time. 33 And if a man purchase of the Levites, then the house that was sold, and the city of his possession, shall go out in the year of jubile: for the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel.*25.33 a man…: or, one of the Levites redeem them 34 But the field of the suburbs of their cities may not be sold; for it is their perpetual possession.

35 And if thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt relieve him: yea, though he be a stranger, or a sojourner; that he may live with thee.*25.35 fallen…: Heb. his hand faileth*25.35 relieve: Heb. strengthen 36 Take thou no usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee. 37 Thou shalt not give him thy money upon usury, nor lend him thy victuals for increase. 38 I am the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God.

39 And if thy brother that dwelleth by thee be waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not compel him to serve as a bondservant:*25.39 compel…: Heb. serve thyself with him with the service, etc 40 But as an hired servant, and as a sojourner, he shall be with thee, and shall serve thee unto the year of jubile: 41 And then shall he depart from thee, both he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return. 42 For they are my servants, which I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondmen.*25.42 as…: Heb. with the sale of a bondman 43 Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; but shalt fear thy God. 44 Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids. 45 Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession. 46 And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour.*25.46 they…: Heb. ye shall serve yourselves with them

47 And if a sojourner or stranger wax rich by thee, and thy brother that dwelleth by him wax poor, and sell himself unto the stranger or sojourner by thee, or to the stock of the stranger’s family:*25.47 wax rich…: Heb. his hand obtain, etc 48 After that he is sold he may be redeemed again; one of his brethren may redeem him: 49 Either his uncle, or his uncle’s son, may redeem him, or any that is nigh of kin unto him of his family may redeem him; or if he be able, he may redeem himself. 50 And he shall reckon with him that bought him from the year that he was sold to him unto the year of jubile: and the price of his sale shall be according unto the number of years, according to the time of an hired servant shall it be with him. 51 If there be yet many years behind, according unto them he shall give again the price of his redemption out of the money that he was bought for. 52 And if there remain but few years unto the year of jubile, then he shall count with him, and according unto his years shall he give him again the price of his redemption. 53 And as a yearly hired servant shall he be with him: and the other shall not rule with rigour over him in thy sight. 54 And if he be not redeemed in these years, then he shall go out in the year of jubile, both he, and his children with him.*25.54 in these…: or, by these means 55 For unto me the children of Israel are servants; they are my servants whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.
