1 Η ανάσα μου είναι δύσκολη·

ζωή πια δε μ’ απόμεινε,

ο τάφος μου με καρτερεί.

2 Ξέρω πως με περιστοιχίζουν χλευαστές

κι απ’ τις πικρίες που με ποτίζουν, ξαγρυπνάω.

3 Ζητάς μια εγγύηση, Θεέ;

Γίνε εσύ ο εγγυητής μου.

Ποιος άλλος θα δεχότανε για με να εγγυηθεί;

4 Αφού απ’ το νου τους έβγαλες τη φρόνηση

μην τους αφήσεις τώρα να θριαμβεύσουν.

5 Μη γίνεις σαν αυτόν που λέει η παροιμία

ότι καλεί τους φίλους του

και τους μοιράζει δώρα,

ενώ τα μάτια των παιδιών του

με τη λαχτάρα μένουνε.

6 Έγινα ο περίγελως του κόσμου·

εκείνος που τον φτύνουνε στο πρόσωπο.

7 Από τη λύπη θόλωσαν τα μάτια μου

κατάντησα σκιά του εαυτού μου.

8 Όσοι θαρρούν πως είναι δίκαιοι,

μπροστά στη δυστυχία μου σκανδαλίζονται·

κι όσοι πιστεύουνε πως είναι αθώοι

αγανακτούν και πωρωμένο με θαρρούν.

9 Μα όποιος στ’ αλήθεια είναι δίκαιος

από των αλλονών τις κρίσεις δεν κλονίζεται·

κι όποιος τα χέρια του έχει καθαρά

νιώθει η πεποίθησή του να στεριώνει.

10 Όσο για σας, ελάτε φίλοι μου,

ελάτε πάλι όλοι κοντά μου.

Ωστόσο εγώ ανάμεσά σας σοφό ούτ’ έναν δε θα βρω.

11 Οι μέρες μου έφυγαν·

ναυάγησαν τα σχέδιά μου

κι οι πιο ακριβές μου επιθυμίες.

12 Κι όμως μου λένε οι φίλοι μου

πως είναι μέρα η νύχτα μου

και πως το φως είναι κοντά,

ενώ σκοτάδια με τυλίγουν.

13 Να κατοικήσω είν’ η ελπίδα μου στον άδη

και στο σκοτάδι

το κλινάρι μου να στρώσω.

14 Τον κρύο τάφο λέω πατέρα μου,

μητέρα κι αδερφές μου, τα σκουλήκια.

15 Πώς είναι δυνατό λοιπόν

για ελπίδα να μιλά κανείς;

Ποιος μπορεί να διακρίνει

ακόμα κι ένα ίχνος της;

16 Θα καταποντιστεί κι αυτή στα έγκατα του άδη

και θα ξαπλώσει μες στο χώμα μ’ εμένα αντάμα.
