1 Και*Οι στ. 1-5 σε άλλες μετ. αριθμούνται ως 4:22-26. τώρα φώναξε! Να δούμε ποιος θα σου απαντήσει;

Σε ποιον απ’ τους αγγέλους θα στραφείς;

2 Η οργή τον καταστρέφει τον ανόητο,

τον άμυαλο το πάθος τον σκοτώνει.

3 Βέβαια είδα ανόητους να ζουν στη σιγουριά,

μα ξαφνικά το σπίτι τους γκρεμίστηκε.

4 Χάνουνε τα παιδιά τους κάθε στήριγμα

κι εξουθενώνονται μπροστά στους δικαστές,

χωρίς κανείς να τα βοηθήσει.

5 Όσα ο ανόητος θέρισε,

τα τρώνε οι πεινασμένοι·

παίρνουν ακόμα κι όσα είχανε

μέσα στ’ αγκάθια κρύψει·

χυμάνε στ’ αγαθά του άπληστοι.

6 Το κακό δεν φυτρώνει από το χώμα,

ούτε βλασταίνει ο πόνος απ’ τη γη·

7 μα ο άνθρωπος δημιουργεί τον πόνο του,*μα ο άνθρωπος... πόνο του. Απόδοση με αλλαγμένο φωνηεντισμό. Το εβρ. έχει κατά λ.: «ο άνθρωπος γεννήθηκε για τον πόνο».

όπως δημιουργεί η φωτιά τις σπίθες,

που στα ψηλά πηδάνε.

8 Εγώ στη θέση σου στον Κύριο θ’ απευθυνόμουν

και την υπόθεσή μου στο Θεό θα την ανέθετα.

9 Είναι τα έργα του μεγάλα κι ανεξιχνίαστα

κι είν’ αναρίθμητα τα θαύματά του.

10 Αυτός στέλνει βροχή στη γη

και με νερό ποτίζει τα χωράφια,

11 τους ταπεινούς υψώνει

και στους θλιμμένους δίνει τη χαρά.

12 Τα σχέδια των πανούργων ματαιώνει

και στην αποτυχία οδηγεί τα έργα τους.

13 Κάνει να πιάνονται οι σοφοί

μέσα στις πανουργίες τους,

και ν’ ανατρέπονται όσα οι ραδιούργοι λογαριάζουν.

14 Μες στο καταμεσήμερο τους δίνει τέτοια τύφλωση,

που ψηλαφώντας να βαδίζουν,

σαν να ’ταν μαύρη νύχτα.

15 Γλιτώνει τον αδύνατο απ’ τις συκοφαντίες τους

κι από των ισχυρών τα χέρια.

16 Έτσι αποκτά ο αδύνατος ελπίδα,

και του άδικου το στόμα κλείνεται.

17 Μακάριος ο άνθρωπος που ο Κύριος τον παιδαγωγεί·

να μην καταφρονείς, λοιπόν,

του Παντοδύναμου τη νουθεσία.

18 Γιατί αυτός πληγώνει,

αλλά και δένει την πληγή,

χτυπάει, αλλά τα χέρια του γιατρεύουν.

19 Από την κάθε δυστυχία θα σε σώσει

όποτε κι αν αυτή σε βρει,

κι ούτε κακό κανένα θα σ’ αγγίξει.

20 Στην πείνα, θα σε σώσει από το θάνατο·

στον πόλεμο, από το χτύπημα του ξίφους.

21 Θα ’σαι προφυλαγμένος απ’ της γλώσσας το μαστίγιο

κι άφοβος, όταν πλησιάζει η καταστροφή.

22 Τον όλεθρο θα τον χλευάσεις και την πείνα,

και τα θεριά της γης

δε θα τα φοβηθείς.

23 Ως και των χωραφιών οι πέτρες

θα συμμαχήσουνε μαζί σου,

κι ειρήνη θα ’χεις με του κάμπου τα θηρία.

24 Θα νιώσεις πως με ειρήνη ζεις

κάτω από τη σκηνή σου·

κι όταν πηγαίνεις να κοιτάξεις τα λιβάδια σου,

δε θα σου λείπει ούτ’ ένα ζωντανό.

25 Θα δεις ν’ αυξάνουν οι απόγονοί σου,

και να πληθαίνουν τα βλαστάρια σου

σαν το χορτάρι του αγρού.

26 Και θα μπεις μες στον τάφο σε βαθιά γεράματα,

όπως οι θημωνιές που τις στοιβάζουν στον καιρό τους.

27 Βλέπεις, εμείς αυτά βαθιά τα μελετήσαμε

κι είναι έτσι όπως σου τα λέμε.

Προσεχτικά άκουσέ τα κι επωφελήσου απ’ αυτά.
