1 Μετά απ’ αυτά, έγινε κλήρωση για τη φυλή του Μανασσή, πρωτότοκου γιου του Ιωσήφ. Πρωτότοκος γιος του Μανασσή και γενναίος πολεμιστής, ήταν ο Μαχίρ, πατέρας του Γαλαάδ. Στο Μαχίρ, λοιπόν, δόθηκε η περιοχή της Γαλαάδ και της Βασάν. 2 Μερίδιο πήραν και οι υπόλοιπες συγγένειες, που προέρχονταν όλες από τους γιους του Μανασσή, γιου του Ιωσήφ: Οι συγγένειες του Αβιέζερ, του Χέλεκ, του Ασριήλ, του Συχέμ, του Χέφερ και του Σεμιδά.

3 Ο Σαλπαάδ, όμως, γιος του Χέφερ και εγγονός του Γαλαάδ, γιου του Μαχίρ και εγγονού του Μανασσή, δεν είχε γιους· είχε μόνο κόρες· τα ονόματά τους ήταν Μαχλά, Νωά, Χογλά, Μιλχά και Τιρσά. 4 Αυτές παρουσιάστηκαν στον ιερέα Ελεάζαρ, στον Ιησού, γιο του Ναυή και στους άρχοντες και τους είπαν: «Ο Κύριος είχε διατάξει το Μωυσή να δώσει και σ’ εμάς με κλήρο γη, όπως και στους άντρες της φυλής μας». Έδωσαν, λοιπόν, και σ’ αυτές, σύμφωνα με τη διαταγή του Κυρίου, μερίδιο γης όπως και στους αδερφούς του πατέρα τους. 5 Έτσι στη φυλή Μανασσή έπεσαν δέκα μερίδια, εκτός από τη Γαλαάδ και τη Βασάν, που βρίσκονται ανατολικά του Ιορδάνη, 6 γιατί πήραν μερίδιο γης όχι μόνον οι άντρες απόγονοι του Μανασσή, αλλά και γυναίκες της ίδιας φυλής· η περιοχή της Γαλαάδ δόθηκε στους υπόλοιπους απογόνους του Μανασσή.

7 Τα σύνορα της φυλής Μανασσή άρχιζαν από την περιοχή της φυλής Ασήρ κι έφταναν στην Μιχμεθάθ, ανατολικά της Συχέμ· από ’κει κατέβαιναν νότια ως τις κατοικίες της Εν-Ταππουάχ. 8 Η περιοχή της Ταππουάχ ανήκε στη φυλή Μανασσή, ενώ η πόλη Ταππουάχ, που ήταν χτισμένη πάνω στα σύνορα του Μανασσή, ανήκε στη φυλή Εφραΐμ. 9 Έπειτα, τα σύνορα κατέβαιναν στη νότια όχθη του ποταμού Κανά, ενώ οι πόλεις στα νότια του ποταμού ανήκαν στους Εφραϊμίτες, μολονότι βρίσκονταν στην περιοχή του Μανασσή· από ’κει, τα σύνορα προχωρούσαν βόρεια του ποταμού και κατέληγαν στη θάλασσα. 10 Η νότια περιοχή ανήκε στη φυλή Εφραΐμ και η βόρεια στη φυλή Μανασσή· η θάλασσα αποτελούσε το δυτικό σύνορό τους· προς βορράν συνόρευαν με την περιοχή της φυλής Ασήρ και ανατολικά με την περιοχή της φυλής Ισσάχαρ.

11 Μέσα στις περιοχές των φυλών Ισσάχαρ και Ασήρ, η φυλή Μανασσή έλαβε τις πόλεις Βαιθ-Σαν και Ιβλεάμ με τα περίχωρά τους, κι επίσης τις πόλεις Δωρ, Εν-Δωρ, Τανάχ και Μεγιδδώ με τους κατοίκους τους και τα περίχωρά τους. 12 Οι απόγονοι όμως του Μανασσή δεν μπόρεσαν να εκδιώξουν τους Χαναναίους, τους κατοίκους αυτών των πόλεων· έτσι οι Χαναναίοι παρέμειναν στην περιοχή. 13 Ακόμα κι όταν οι Ισραηλίτες απέκτησαν μεγαλύτερη ισχύ, δεν μπόρεσαν να εκδιώξουν τελείως τους Χαναναίους· τους έκαναν όμως υποτελείς τους.

14 Οι απόγονοι του Ιωσήφ ήρθαν και είπαν στον Ιησού: «Γιατί μας έδωσες μόνο ένα κληρονομικό μερίδιο; Εμάς ο Κύριος εξακολουθεί ως τώρα να μας ευλογεί, κι έχουμε γίνει πολυάριθμοι». 15 Ο Ιησούς τους απάντησε: «Αφού είστε τόσο πολυάριθμοι, και δε σας αρκεί η ορεινή περιοχή του Εφραΐμ, ανεβείτε και ξεχερσώστε χώρο στα δάση που ανήκουν στους Φερεζαίους και στους Ρεφαΐτες».

16 Οι απόγονοι του Ιωσήφ απάντησαν: «Πράγματι δε μας αρκεί η ορεινή μας περιοχή· ωστόσο οι Χαναναίοι που κατοικούν στην πεδιάδα, έχουν σιδερένια άρματα, το ίδιο κι αυτοί που κατοικούν στη Βαιθ-Σαν και στα περίχωρά της, κι αυτοί που κατοικούν στην πεδιάδα Ιζρεέλ».*Οι σιδερένιες άμαξες έδιναν οπλική υπεροχή στους Χαναναίους στις μάχες της πεδιάδας. Γι’ αυτό και οι Ισραηλίτες αρχικά εγκαταστάθηκαν στις ορεινές περιοχές.17 Τότε ο Ιησούς είπε στους απογόνους του Ιωσήφ, δηλαδή στις φυλές Εφραΐμ και Μανασσή: «Πράγματι είστε πολυάριθμοι κι έχετε μεγάλη δύναμη. Δε θα πάρετε μόνο έναν κλήρο, 18 αλλά θα σας δοθεί όλη η ορεινή περιοχή που είναι γεμάτη δάση· θα τα ξεχερσώσετε και θα είναι δική σας απ’ την μιαν άκρη ως την άλλη. Και τους Χαναναίους θα κατορθώσετε να τους διώξετε, μολονότι έχουν σιδερένια άρματα και είναι ισχυροί».

3 But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of his daughters, Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 4 And they came near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren. Therefore according to the commandment of the LORD he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father. 5 And there fell ten portions to Manasseh, beside the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side Jordan; 6 Because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons: and the rest of Manasseh’s sons had the land of Gilead.

7 And the coast of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethah, that lieth before Shechem; and the border went along on the right hand unto the inhabitants of En-tappuah. 8 Now Manasseh had the land of Tappuah: but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim; 9 And the coast descended unto the river Kanah, southward of the river: these cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh: the coast of Manasseh also was on the north side of the river, and the outgoings of it were at the sea:*17.9 river Kanah: or, brook of reeds 10 Southward it was Ephraim’s, and northward it was Manasseh’s, and the sea is his border; and they met together in Asher on the north, and in Issachar on the east. 11 And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher Beth-shean and her towns, and Ibleam and her towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and her towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns, even three countries. 12 Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land. 13 Yet it came to pass, when the children of Israel were waxen strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute; but did not utterly drive them out.

14 And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people, forasmuch as the LORD hath blessed me hitherto? 15 And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people, then get thee up to the wood country, and cut down for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee.*17.15 giants: or, Rephaims 16 And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are of Beth-shean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of Jezreel. 17 And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power: thou shalt not have one lot only: 18 But the mountain shall be thine; for it is a wood, and thou shalt cut it down: and the outgoings of it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong.
