1 Εγώ είμαι ο άνθρωπος που γνώρισε τη δυστυχία

απ’ το ραβδί της οργής του Κυρίου.

2 Με έσυρε και μ’ έφερε μέσ’ στο βαθύ σκοτάδι, όχι στο φως.

3 Όλο εμένα χτυπάει καθημερινά.

4 Βασάνισε τη σάρκα και το δέρμα μου

και σύντριψε τα κόκαλά μου·

5 με απέκλεισε από παντού,

με περιστοίχισε με πίκρα και με πόνο.

6 Να ζήσω μέσα στο σκοτάδι μ’ έβαλε,

σαν τους νεκρούς του παρελθόντος.

7 Σε τείχη μέσα μ’ έκλεισε και δεν μπορώ να βγω·

μου ’κανε πιο βαριές τις αλυσίδες μου.

8 Ακόμη κι όταν με φωνές τον ικετεύω,

πνίγει την προσευχή μου

για να μη φτάσει ως αυτόν.

9 Τους δρόμους μου τους έφραξε με πέτρες πελεκητές

κι έτσι ακολούθησα λαθεμένο μονοπάτι.

10 Για μένα έγινε σαν αρκούδα

και σαν λιοντάρι που ενεδρεύει.

11 Μ’ έβγαλε απ’ το δρόμο μου

και μ’ έκανε κομμάτια,

με αφάνισε.

12 Το τόξο μου το τέντωσε

και για σημάδι μ’ έβαλε στο βέλος του.

13 Τα βέλη όλα της φαρέτρας μου

τα έμπηξε στα νεφρά μου.

14 Έγινα του λαού μου ο περίγελως,

το αδιάκοπο, χλευαστικό τραγούδι τους.

15 Πίκρες με χόρτασε,

με πότισε φαρμάκι.

16 Χαλίκια με τα δόντια μου με έκανε να φάω.

Μ’ έριξε μες στη στάχτη,

17 μου πήρε την ειρήνη της ψυχής μου,

τι είναι ευτυχία το λησμόνησα,

18 και είπα: «Χάθηκε η δύναμή μου,

αυτή η ελπίδα που ερχόταν απ’ τον Κύριο».

19 Ν’ αναλογίζομαι τη θλίψη και την ταλαιπωρία μου

είναι δηλητήριο και χολή.

20 Αδιάκοπα τα σκέφτομαι και θλίβεται η ψυχή μου.

21 Μα η ελπίδα έρχεται ετούτο όταν θυμάμαι:

22 πως του Κυρίου η ευσπλαχνία δεν εξαντλήθηκε,

ούτε και τέλειωσε το έλεός του.

23 Την κάθε αυγή ξαναγεννιούνται·

κι είν’ η πιστότητά του απέραντη.

24 Είπα: «Ο Κύριος για μένα είναι το παν,

γι’ αυτό και θα ’χω την ελπίδα μου σ’ αυτόν».

25 Ο Κύριος είναι καλός σ’ όποιον τον εμπιστεύεται,

σ’ αυτόν που τον αναζητάει.

26 Είναι καλό να περιμένει κάποιος σιωπηλά

από τον Κύριο τη βοήθεια.

27 Καλό είναι για τον άνθρωπο

να ’χει απ’ τα νιάτα του υπομείνει δυσκολίες.

28 Ας περιμένει κι ας σιωπά,

αφού ο Κύριος τις επιτρέπει.

29 Ας ταπεινώνεται ως τη γη· ίσως υπάρχει ακόμα ελπίδα.

30 Και τα χτυπήματα ας τα δέχεται,

τις ταπεινώσεις ας τις υπομένει.

31 Γιατί ο Κύριος δεν θα τον ταλαιπωρεί για πάντα.

32 Κι όταν τις στενοχώριες δίνει,

πάλι γίνεται σπλαχνικός·

τόσο είναι μεγάλη η αγαθότητά του.

33 Δε χαίρεται όταν στενοχωρεί

κι όταν πικραίνει τους ανθρώπους.

34 Όταν ποδοπατιούνται

της χώρας μας οι αιχμάλωτοι,

35 όταν στα μάτια του Υψίστου μπρος

καταπατιέται το δίκιο ενός ανθρώπου,

36 όταν στο δικαστήριο κάποιος αδικείται,

αυτά ο Κύριος τάχα δεν τα βλέπει;

37 Ποιος είν’ αυτός που όταν πει κάτι, γίνεται;

Ο Κύριος δεν είναι εκείνος που προστάζει;

38 Αν κάτι γίνεται κακό ή κάτι καλό,

ο Ύψιστος το πρόσταξε!

39 Για ποιο πράγμα ο άνθρωπος μπορεί να παραπονεθεί,

αφού, παρόλα του τα λάθη,

βρίσκεται ακόμα στη ζωή;

40 Ας εξετάσουμε τον τρόπο της ζωής μας

κι ας τον διερευνήσουμε,

στον Κύριο ας επιστρέψουμε.

41 Καρδιές και χέρια στο Θεό του ουρανού ας υψώσουμε,

κι ας του προσευχηθούμε:

42 «Αμαρτήσαμε, αποστατήσαμε

κι εσύ ακόμα δε μας το συγχώρησες!

43 Σε κατέλαβε ο θυμός σου και μας καταδίωξες,

δίχως συμπόνια μάς εξόντωσες.

44 Με σύννεφο σκεπάστηκες,

έτσι που να μην μπορεί να το περάσει η προσευχή μας.

45 Μας έκανες σκουπίδια,

βδέλυγμα στους λαούς ανάμεσα.

46 Όλοι οι εχθροί μας με τα λόγια τους

μας κοροϊδεύουν.

47 Τρόμος και θάνατος έπεσε πάνω μας,

ερήμωση και καταστροφή.

48 Χειμάρρους δάκρυα κατεβάζουνε τα μάτια μου,

γιατί ο λαός μου καταστράφηκε!

49 Τα μάτια μου γίναν πηγές αστέρευτες χωρίς σταματημό,

50 ωσότου ο Κύριος να σκύψει

από τα ουράνια και να δει.

51 Τα μάτια μου με κάνουν και πονώ

από το συνεχές κλάμα για την πόλη μου.

52 «Εκείνοι που χωρίς λόγο μ’ εχθρεύονται,

με καταδίωξαν σαν να ’μουνα πετούμενο.

53 Μ’ έριξαν ζωντανό μες σ’ ένα λάκκο

και κλείσαν με μια πλάκα το άνοιγμα.

54 Τα νερά έφτασαν στο λαιμό μου

και μέσα μου είπα:

"χάθηκα!"

55 Επικαλέστηκα το όνομά σου, Κύριε,

απ’ τα βαθιά του λάκκου.

56 Είπα: "το αυτί σου μην το κλείσεις

στο στεναγμό μου, στην κραυγή μου".

Και τη φωνή μου εσύ την άκουσες.

57 Όταν σε φώναξα ήρθες κοντά

και μού ’πες: "μη φοβάσαι!"

58 Έγινες υπερασπιστής μου, Κύριε, στη δίκη μου,

έσωσες τη ζωή μου.

59 Κύριε, ξέρεις το άδικο που μού ’γινε·

απόδωσέ μου δικαιοσύνη!

60 Είδες όλο το μίσος τους,

όλα τα πονηρά τους σχέδια εναντίον μου.

61 Άκουσες, Κύριε, τις προσβολές τους,

όλα τα πονηρά τους σχέδια εναντίον μου.

62 Τα λόγια των εχθρών μου και οι σκέψεις τους

είν’ εναντίον μου όλη την ημέρα.

63 Κοίτα τους: είτε κάθονται είτε σηκώνονται,

εγώ είμαι το ειρωνικό τους το τραγούδι.

64 Κύριε, ανταπόδωσέ τους σύμφωνα με τα έργα τους.

65 Σκλήρυνε την καρδιά τους·

ας πέσει πάνω τους η κατάρα σου.

66 Μες στην οργή σου καταδίωξέ τους,

κι από τη γη εξαφάνισέ τους, Κύριε».

1 I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. 2 He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light. 3 Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day. 4 My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones. 5 He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail. 6 He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old. 7 He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy. 8 Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer. 9 He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked. 10 He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places. 11 He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he hath made me desolate. 12 He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow. 13 He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.*3.13 arrows: Heb. sons 14 I was a derision to all my people; and their song all the day. 15 He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath made me drunken with wormwood.*3.15 bitterness: Heb. bitternesses 16 He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he hath covered me with ashes.*3.16 covered…: or, rolled me in the ashes 17 And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace: I forgat prosperity.*3.17 prosperity: Heb. good 18 And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the LORD: 19 Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.*3.19 Remembering: or, Remember 20 My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.*3.20 humbled: Heb. bowed

21 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.*3.21 recall…: Heb. make to return to my heart

22 It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. 24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. 25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. 26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD. 27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. 28 He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him. 29 He putteth his mouth in the dust; if so be there may be hope. 30 He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him: he is filled full with reproach. 31 For the Lord will not cast off for ever: 32 But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies. 33 For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.*3.33 willingly: Heb. from his heart 34 To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth, 35 To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most High,*3.35 the most High: or, a superior 36 To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not.*3.36 approveth not: or, seeth not

37 Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not? 38 Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good? 39 Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?*3.39 complain: or, murmur 40 Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD. 41 Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.

42 We have transgressed and have rebelled: thou hast not pardoned. 43 Thou hast covered with anger, and persecuted us: thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied. 44 Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through. 45 Thou hast made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people. 46 All our enemies have opened their mouths against us. 47 Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction. 48 Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people. 49 Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission, 50 Till the LORD look down, and behold from heaven. 51 Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.*3.51 mine heart: Heb. my soul*3.51 because…: or, more than all 52 Mine enemies chased me sore, like a bird, without cause. 53 They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me. 54 Waters flowed over mine head; then I said, I am cut off.

55 I called upon thy name, O LORD, out of the low dungeon. 56 Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry. 57 Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not. 58 O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life. 59 O LORD, thou hast seen my wrong: judge thou my cause. 60 Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me. 61 Thou hast heard their reproach, O LORD, and all their imaginations against me; 62 The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day. 63 Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their musick.

64 Render unto them a recompence, O LORD, according to the work of their hands. 65 Give them sorrow of heart, thy curse unto them.*3.65 sorrow…: or, obstinacy of heart 66 Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the LORD.
