1 Αχ, αλίμονο, πώς έμεινε έρημη

η πόλη που είχε άλλοτε τόσο πολύ λαό!

Αυτή που ήταν ονομαστή στα έθνη ανάμεσα

απόμεινε σαν χήρα·

των πόλεων η πριγκίπισσα υποδουλώθηκε.

2 Κλαίει και κλαίει όλη τη νύχτα αδιάκοπα,

τα δάκρυα τα μάγουλά της αυλακώνουν.

Απ’ όλους που την αγαπήσανε κανείς

δε βρίσκεται να την παρηγορήσει.

Όλοι οι φίλοι της την εγκατέλειψαν·

της έγιναν εχθροί.

3 Μετά τη θλίψη και το βάρος της δουλείας,

ο λαός του Ιούδα στην αιχμαλωσία σύρθηκε.

Τώρα μένει στα έθνη ανάμεσα και ησυχία δε βρίσκει·

οι διώκτες του τον φέραν σε αδιέξοδο

τον πίεσαν σκληρά.

4 Οι δρόμοι που οδηγούνε στη Σιών πενθούν,

γιατί κανείς πια στις γιορτές δεν έρχεται.

Ερημωθήκαν όλες της οι πύλες,

οι ιερείς της πικρά αναστενάζουνε,

θλίβονται οι κόρες της,

κι η ίδια πολύ είναι πικραμένη.

5 Οι αντίπαλοί της πάνω της κυριάρχησαν,

οι εχθροί της ζουν ευτυχισμένοι,

γιατί ο Κύριος την ταλαιπώρησε για τις πολλές της ανομίες.

Τα νεαρά παιδιά της τα ’διωξε ο εχθρός

και πορευθήκαν στην αιχμαλωσία.

6 Κι η πόλη της Σιών όλη τη δόξα της την έχασε·

οι άρχοντές της γίνανε σαν ελάφια

που δε βρίσκουν τροφή·

κι είναι σχεδόν χαμένη η δύναμή τους,

καθώς τρέχουνε να ξεφύγουν απ’ το διώκτη τους.

7 Η Ιερουσαλήμ στης δυστυχίας της

και στης κατάπτωσης τις μέρες

θυμάται όλη τη λαμπρότητα

που είχε τον παλιό καιρό.

Όταν όμως ο λαός της έπεσε στα χέρια του εχθρού

ούτ’ ένας δεν βρέθηκε να τη βοηθήσει.

Την κοίταζαν οι εχθροί της και γελούσαν

βλέποντας την κατάντια της.

8 Η Ιερουσαλήμ αμάρτησε πολύ,

γι’ αυτό κι έγινε καταγέλαστη.

Όλοι όσοι την εκτιμούσαν, τώρα την περιφρονούν,

γιατί βλέπουν τη γύμνια της·

κι αυτή αναστενάζει

κι από την άλλη στρέφεται μεριά.

9 Το φόρεμά της φέρνει τα ίχνη της ντροπής της·

τέτοιο τέλος δεν τό ’χε ποτέ φανταστεί.

Έπεσε τόσο χαμηλά, χωρίς ούτ’ ένας να βρεθεί

να την παρηγορήσει.

Φωνάζει η πόλη: «Κύριε, δες τη θλίψη μου·

άκου τον πώς καυχιέται ο εχθρός μου!»

10 Ο εχθρός το χέρι του άπλωσε

σ’ όλους τους θησαυρούς της·

κι αυτή είδε το ναό της να πατούν,

τα έθνη εκείνα που είχε προστάξει ο Κύριος

να μη μπουν μέσα στην κοινότητά του.

11 Αναστενάζουν όλοι της οι κάτοικοι,

ψωμί ζητούν·

δίνουνε τα στολίδια τους, για να ’βρουν τροφή,

έτσι που στη ζωή να κρατηθούνε.

Η πόλη φωνάζει: «Κύριε, κοίταξε,

δες πόσο είμαι καταφρονεμένη!»

12 Κράζει προς τους διαβάτες:

«Αχ, όλοι εσείς, κοιτάξτε με και πέστε αν υπάρχει

πόνος σαν το δικό μου πόνο, που μου εδόθη,

και που μ’ αυτόν ο Κύριος με βασάνισε

τη μέρα της φοβερής του οργής.

13 Από ψηλά έριξε φωτιά στα κόκαλά μου

και τα κατέστρεψε·

δίχτυ στα πόδια μου άπλωσε,

κάτω με πέταξε, μ’ έκανε νά υποφέρω,

για πάντα να πονώ.

14 Έκανε ο Κύριος ζυγό τις αμαρτίες μου,

τις έσφιξε γερά απάνω στο λαιμό μου,

έτσι η δύναμή μου ατόνησε.

Ο Κύριος με παρέδωσε στα χέρια εκείνων,

που δεν μπορώ να τους αντισταθώ.

15 Ο Κύριος μακριά μου απέρριψε

όλους τους άντρες μου, τους ισχυρούς·

πλήθος συγκέντρωσε εναντίον μου,

για να συντρίψει τους πολεμιστές μου.

Πάτησαν του Ιούδα το λαό

καθώς στο πατητήρι τα σταφύλια.

16 Γι’ αυτό εγώ κλαίω· τα μάτια δάκρυα πλημμυρίζουν,

γιατ’ είναι μακριά μου ο παρηγορητής μου

εκείνος που θα μου ξανάδινε ζωή·

αφανιστήκαν τα παιδιά μου,

γιατί ο εχθρός ήταν πολύ ισχυρός».

17 Τα χέρια της άπλωσε ικετευτικά η Σιών,

αλλά κανείς δεν την παρηγορεί·

ο Κύριος επιστράτευσε στον Ιακώβ ενάντια

τους γύρω του εχθρούς·

η Ιερουσαλήμ έγινε μισητή γι’ αυτούς.

18 «Ο Κύριος έχει δίκιο που έτσι μου φέρεται,

γιατί εναντιώθηκα στους λόγους του.

Ακούστε όμως όλοι εσείς εδώ οι λαοί,

κοιτάξτε με στον πόνο μου.

Οι κοπελιές μου και τα παλικάρια μου

φύγαν για την αιχμαλωσία.

19 Κάλεσα αυτούς που με είχαν αγαπήσει

αλλά με πρόδωσαν·

οι ιερείς μου κι οι πρεσβύτεροί μου

στην πόλη πέθαναν γυρεύοντας τροφή,

για να πάρουν δυνάμεις.

20 Κοίταξε, Κύριε, πόσο πολύ υποφέρω·

φλογίζονται τα σπλάχνα μου,

μέσα μου αναταράζεται η καρδιά μου,

τόσο πολύ που σου εναντιώθηκα.

Έξω αφανίζει τα παιδιά μου το ξίφος,

και μέσα το θανατικό.

21 Οι εχθροί μου μ’ άκουσαν ν’ αναστενάζω!

Αλλά κανείς να με παρηγορήσει δεν υπάρχει.

Όλοι τους άκουσαν και χάρηκαν

για την καταστροφή που μου προξένησες εσύ.

Ας έρθει η ημέρα που εξάγγειλες,

για να υποφέρουνε κι αυτοί όπως εγώ.

22 Μην παραβλέψεις την κακία τους· Κύριε,

και σ’ αυτούς κάνε ότι έκανες σ’ εμένα,

για όλες τις αμαρτίες μου.

Γιατί πολλοί ’ναι οι αναστεναγμοί μου,

κι είν’ η καρδιά μου ανήμπορη».

1 How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people! how is she become as a widow! she that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary! 2 She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks: among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her: all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies. 3 Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude: she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest: all her persecutors overtook her between the straits.*1.3 because of great…: Heb. for the greatness of servitude 4 The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are desolate: her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness. 5 Her adversaries are the chief, her enemies prosper; for the LORD hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her children are gone into captivity before the enemy. 6 And from the daughter of Zion all her beauty is departed: her princes are become like harts that find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer. 7 Jerusalem remembered in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her pleasant things that she had in the days of old, when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and none did help her: the adversaries saw her, and did mock at her sabbaths.*1.7 pleasant: or, desirable 8 Jerusalem hath grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honoured her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness: yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward.*1.8 is…: Heb. is become a removing, or, wandering 9 Her filthiness is in her skirts; she remembereth not her last end; therefore she came down wonderfully: she had no comforter. 12 Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.*1.12 Is it…: or, It is nothing*1.12 pass by: Heb. pass by the way? 13 From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back: he hath made me desolate and faint all the day. 14 The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand: they are wreathed, and come up upon my neck: he hath made my strength to fall, the Lord hath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up. 15 The Lord hath trodden under foot all my mighty men in the midst of me: he hath called an assembly against me to crush my young men: the Lord hath trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a winepress.*1.15 the virgin…: or, the winepress of the virgin, etc 16 For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.*1.16 relieve: Heb. bring back 17 Zion spreadeth forth her hands, and there is none to comfort her: the LORD hath commanded concerning Jacob, that his adversaries should be round about him: Jerusalem is as a menstruous woman among them.

18 The LORD is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.*1.18 commandment: Heb. mouth 19 I called for my lovers, but they deceived me: my priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city, while they sought their meat to relieve their souls. 20 Behold, O LORD; for I am in distress: my bowels are troubled; mine heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death. 21 They have heard that I sigh: there is none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that thou hast done it: thou wilt bring the day that thou hast called, and they shall be like unto me.*1.21 called: or, proclaimed 22 Let all their wickedness come before thee; and do unto them, as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions: for my sighs are many, and my heart is faint.
