1 Θυμήσου, Κύριε, τι μας συνέβηκε·

κοίτα να δεις και μόνος σου την προσβολή μας!

2 Τη χώρα που μας έδωσες την πήραν οι αλλοεθνείς,

τα σπίτια μας οι ξένοι.

3 Μείναμε ορφανοί χωρίς πατέρα,

έγιναν χήρες οι μανάδες μας.

4 Πληρώνουμε για το νερό που πίνουμε

και πρέπει ν’ αγοράζουμε τα ξύλα της φωτιάς μας.

5 Οι διώκτες μας μάς κάθισαν στον τράχηλο·

δυνάμεις πια δεν έχουμε

και δεν υπάρχει ανάπαυση για μας.

6 Απλώσαμε ικετευτικά τα χέρια μας στην Αίγυπτο,

στην Ασσυρία, για να χορτάσουμε ψωμί.

7 Οι πρόγονοί μας αμαρτήσανε·

αυτοί όμως δεν υπάρχουν πια,

κι εμείς σηκώνουμε το βάρος των κριμάτων τους.

8 Οι δούλοι έγιναν τώρα αφεντικά μας·

κανείς δεν μας γλιτώνει από τα χέρια τους.

9 Τη ζωή μας τη διακινδυνεύουμε

για να μαζέψουμε τη συγκομιδή μας,

μας απειλούνε της ερήμου οι ληστές.

10 Καίει το δέρμα μας σαν να ’μαστε σε κλίβανο·

τόσο μας βασανίζει η πείνα.

11 Γυναίκες της Σιών κακοποιήθηκαν,

παρθένες μες στις πόλεις του Ιούδα.

12 Πήραν τους άρχοντες της πόλης και τους κρέμασαν,

στους γέροντες δεν δείξανε κανένα σεβασμό.

13 Οι νέοι γυρίζουνε σαν σκλάβοι τη μυλόπετρα,

και τα παιδιά κάτω απ’ το φόρτωμα των ξύλων

γονατίζουν.

14 Οι γέροντες δεν κάθονται στην πύλη πια

να συσκεφθούν,

οι νέοι δεν παίζουν πια τη μουσική τους.

15 Έπαψε της καρδιάς μας η χαρά,

σε πένθος μεταβλήθηκε ο χορός μας.

16 Της δόξας το στεφάνι έπεσε απ’ το κεφάλι μας·

αλίμονο σε μας, γιατί αμαρτήσαμε!

17 Γι’ αυτό ατόνησε η καρδιά μας·

γι’ αυτό θολώσανε τα μάτια μας·

18 γιατί το όρος Σιών γέμισε ερείπια

κι απάνω του τρέχουν αλεπούδες.

19 Εσύ, όμως, Κύριε, αιώνια βασιλεύεις,

μένει ο θρόνος σου από γενιά σ’ άλλη γενιά.

20 Γιατί θέλεις για πάντα να μας λησμονήσεις,

να μας εγκαταλείψεις για όλη τη ζωή μας;

21 Φέρε μας, Κύριε, πάλι κοντά σου

και θα επιστρέψουμε·

δώσε μας πάλι τη ζωή, όπως παλιά.

22 Μήπως μας έχεις εντελώς εγκαταλείψει;

ή μήπως είναι ο θυμός σου εναντίον μας ασίγαστος;
