1 όταν τον Ισραήλ θα τον γιατρέψω, πιότερο θα φανεί η ανομία του λαού του Εφραΐμ*Εφραΐμ. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 4:17. και η κακία της Σαμάρειας. Γιατί ζουν με δολιότητα· κλέφτες μπαίνουν στα σπίτια, έξω στους δρόμους οι ληστές γδύνουνε τους ανθρώπους. 2 Και δε σκέφτονται ότι καμιά κακία τους δεν μπορεί να μου διαφύγει. Τώρα οι πράξεις τους τούς έχουν κυκλωμένους· τις έχω όλες μπρος στα μάτια μου».

3 «Με δόλο ξεγελούν το βασιλιά και τους αξιωματούχους του, τους άρχοντες. 4 Προδότες είναι όλοι τους. Καίνε τα πάθη τους καθώς ο παραζεσταμένος φούρνος, που ο φούρναρης τον έχει τόσο κάψει και δε χρειάζεται να ρίξει άλλα ξύλα όση ώρα ζυμώνει και περιμένει η ζύμη να φουσκώσει. 5 Στην επέτειο της ενθρόνισης του βασιλιά μεθούν τους άρχοντές τους κι ο βασιλιάς μ’ αυτούς που τον προδίνουν τσουγκρίζει το ποτήρι του. 6 Οι δολοπλόκοι είναι έτοιμοι για δράση, μα όλη τη νύχτα συγκρατιούνται και μόνο το πρωί εξορμούν. 7 Το καταστροφικό τους μίσος καίει σαν τη φλόγα της φωτιάς. Ο ένας βασιλιάς μετά τον άλλο γίνεται θύμα τους. Κι ωστόσο ούτ’ ένας τους δεν μ’ επικαλείται».*Η έννοια των στ. 4-6 είναι αβέβαιη. – Οι στ. 3-7 απεικονίζουν την ιστορία της εποχής του Ωσηέ, όπου σε διάστημα 15 ετών τέσσερις από τους πέντε βασιλιάδες δολοφονήθηκαν.

8 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Ο λαός του Εφραΐμ με τα έθνη ανακατεύτηκε. Έγινε σαν καρβέλι ψημένο από τη μια μόνο μεριά. 9 Ξένοι κατέφαγαν τη δύναμή του, μα ετούτος δεν το νιώθει. Ασπρίσαν τα μαλλιά του, μα αυτός δεν το κατάλαβε. 10 Η περηφάνια του Ισραήλ μαρτυρεί εναντίον του· δεν επιστρέψανε σ’ εμένα τον Κύριο, το Θεό τους· ούτε με αναζήτησαν.

11 «Ο Εφραΐμ είναι σαν περιστέρι άπειρο κι ανόητο· πότε τους Αιγύπτιους για βοήθεια καλούν, πότε στην Ασσυρία καταφεύγουν. 12 Αλλά καθώς πορεύονται το δρόμο τους θ’ απλώσω πάνω τους το δίχτυ μου και θα τους ρίξω κάτω, σαν τα πουλιά του ουρανού. Για τις κακίες τους θα τους δέσω.

13 «Αλίμονο στο λαό του Εφραΐμ, που έφυγε μακριά μου! Του μέλλει να καταστραφεί, γιατί εναντίον μου επαναστάτησε! Κι εγώ δεν μπορώ να ελευθερώσω αυτούς που λένε ψέματα εναντίον μου. 14 Δεν είναι ειλικρινείς όταν φωνάζουν να τους βοηθήσω. Πέφτουνε κάτω και θρηνούν, σκίζουν τις σάρκες τους με την ελπίδα να εισακουστούν οι προσευχές τους για σιτάρι και κρασί, μα συνεχίζουνε την ανταρσία εναντίον μου. 15 Ενώ εγώ τους είχα βοηθήσει να γίνουν δυνατοί, εκείνοι εναντίον μου συνωμοτούσαν. 16 Γυρνούν μα όχι σ’ εμένα· γίναν σαν χαλαρό τόξο, που δεν μπορεί το στόχο του να βρει. Οι άρχοντες θα σκοτωθούν σε πόλεμο, γιατί έχουν γλώσσα αλαζονική· και θα γελάει μ’ αυτούς η Αίγυπτος».

8 Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not turned. 9 Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not.*7.9 here…: Heb. sprinkled 10 And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this.

11 Ephraim also is like a silly dove without heart: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria. 12 When they shall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven; I will chastise them, as their congregation hath heard. 13 Woe unto them! for they have fled from me: destruction unto them! because they have transgressed against me: though I have redeemed them, yet they have spoken lies against me.*7.13 destruction: Heb. spoil 14 And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they howled upon their beds: they assemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel against me. 15 Though I have bound and strengthened their arms, yet do they imagine mischief against me.*7.15 have…: or, chastened 16 They return, but not to the most High: they are like a deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.
