1 Οι Φιλισταίοι πολέμησαν τους Ισραηλίτες στο όρος Γελβουέ. Οι Ισραηλίτες τράπηκαν σε φυγή και θανατώθηκαν πολλοί. 2 Οι εχθροί καταδίωξαν το Σαούλ και τους γιους του και σκότωσαν τους γιους του Σαούλ, Ιωνάθαν, Αβιναδάβ και Μαλκί-Σούα.

3 Η μάχη γινόταν όλο και σκληρότερη γύρω από το Σαούλ· τελικά τον χτύπησαν οι τοξότες και πληγώθηκε βαριά. 4 Τότε είπε στον οπλοφόρο του: «Τράβα το ξίφος σου και διαπέρασέ με, για να μην έρθουν αυτοί οι απερίτμητοι και με διαπεράσουν και με χλευάσουν». Ο οπλοφόρος του όμως δεν ήθελε να το κάνει γιατί φοβόταν. Έτσι ο Σαούλ πήρε το ξίφος του κι έπεσε μόνος του πάνω σ’ αυτό.

5 Όταν ο οπλοφόρος του είδε ότι ο Σαούλ πέθανε, έπεσε κι αυτός πάνω στο ξίφος του και πέθανε μαζί του. 6 Έτσι πέθαναν ο Σαούλ και οι τρεις γιοι του, ο οπλοφόρος του και οι στρατιώτες του, όλοι την ίδια μέρα. 7 Οι Ισραηλίτες που κατοικούσαν στην άλλη πλευρά της κοιλάδας*της κοιλάδας. Βλ. υποσ. εις Α΄ Σαμ 31:7. και ανατολικά του Ιορδάνη, όταν έμαθαν ότι ο ισραηλιτικός στρατός τράπηκε σε φυγή και ότι πέθανε ο Σαούλ και οι γιοι του, άφησαν τις πόλεις τους κι έφυγαν. Τότε ήρθαν οι Φιλισταίοι και εγκαταστάθηκαν σ’ αυτές.

8 Την άλλη μέρα όταν πήγαν οι Φιλισταίοι να λεηλατήσουν τους νεκρούς, βρήκαν το Σαούλ και τους τρεις γιους του πεσμένους στο όρος Γελβουέ. 9 Τότε έκοψαν το κεφάλι του Σαούλ, του έβγαλαν την πανοπλία κι έστειλαν σ’ όλη τη χώρα των Φιλισταίων αγγελιοφόρους, να φέρουν την ευχάριστη είδηση στους ναούς των ειδώλων τους και στο λαό. 10 Τοποθέτησαν τον οπλισμό του στο ναό των θεών τους, και το κεφάλι του το κάρφωσαν στο ναό του Δαγών.

11 Οι κάτοικοι της Ιαβές στη Γαλαάδ άκουσαν όσα έκαναν οι Φιλισταίοι στο Σαούλ. 12 Πήγαν, λοιπόν, οι πιο θαρραλέοι απ’ αυτούς τη νύχτα και πήραν τα πτώματα του Σαούλ και των γιων του από το τείχος της Βαιθ-Σεάν· γύρισαν στην Ιαβές και τα έθαψαν εκεί, κάτω από ένα δέντρο, την αρμυρίκη της Ιαβές, και νήστεψαν εφτά μέρες.

13 Έτσι πέθανε ο Σαούλ, γιατί απίστησε στον Κύριο: δεν υπάκουσε στις εντολές του, κι επιπλέον πήγε και συμβουλεύτηκε μια νεκρομάντισσα και ζήτησε τις οδηγίες της 14 αντί να συμβουλευτεί τον Κύριο. Γι’ αυτό ο Κύριος τον θανάτωσε και παρέδωσε τη βασιλεία στο Δαβίδ, γιο του Ιεσσαί.

8 And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen in mount Gilboa. 9 And when they had stripped him, they took his head, and his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry tidings unto their idols, and to the people. 10 And they put his armour in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.

11 And when all Jabesh-gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 They arose, all the valiant men, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
