1 Μια μέρα ο σατανάς ξεσηκώθηκε ενάντια στους Ισραηλίτες και παρακίνησε το Δαβίδ να απογράψει όλο το λαό. 2 Ο Δαβίδ είπε στον Ιωάβ και στους άλλους αξιωματικούς του στρατού: «Πηγαίνετε να απογράψετε τους Ισραηλίτες, από Δαν έως Βέερ-Σεβά*από Δαν έως Βέερ-Σεβά. Βλ. υποσ. εις Κρ 20:1. και δώστε μου αναφορά, για να μάθω πόσοι είναι».

3 Ο Ιωάβ απάντησε: «Μακάρι ο Κύριος να κάνει το λαό του εκατό φορές μεγαλύτερον από ό,τι είναι. Μήπως, κύριέ μου βασιλιά, δεν είναι όλοι στην υπηρεσία σου; Γιατί, λοιπόν, ζητάς κάτι τέτοιο, κύριέ μου; Γιατί να γίνεις εσύ αιτία παρακοής*αιτία παρακοής. Για τη φύση της παρακοής βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Σαμ 24:3. για τους Ισραηλίτες;»

4 Η διαταγή όμως του βασιλιά επιβλήθηκε στον Ιωάβ. Έτσι έφυγε και διάβηκε μέσα απ’ όλο τον Ισραήλ. Μετά γύρισε στην Ιερουσαλήμ 5 κι έδωσε στο Δαβίδ τον αριθμό της απογραφής του λαού: Όλοι οι αξιόμαχοι άντρες του Ισραήλ ήταν ένα εκατομμύριο εκατό χιλιάδες· οι αξιόμαχοι άντρες του Ιούδα ήταν τετρακόσιες εβδομήντα χιλιάδες. 6 Τους λευίτες και τους Βενιαμινίτες δεν τους αρίθμησε μαζί μ’ αυτούς, γιατί η διαταγή του βασιλιά ήταν αποκρουστική για τον Ιωάβ.

7 Ο Θεός όμως δυσαρεστήθηκε μ’ αυτή την ενέργεια και τιμώρησε τους Ισραηλίτες. 8 Ο Δαβίδ είπε στο Θεό: «Αμάρτησα βαριά μ’ αυτό που έκανα! Αναγνωρίζω πόσο ανόητα φέρθηκα. Συγχώρησέ μου, σε παρακαλώ, αυτή την ανομία!» 9 Τότε ο Κύριος μίλησε στο Γαδ, τον Βλέποντα του Δαβίδ, και του είπε: 10 «Πήγαινε και πες στο Δαβίδ εκ μέρους μου τα εξής: Σου προτείνω τρεις ποινές. Διάλεξε μια απ’ αυτές κι εγώ θα την εκτελέσω πάνω σου».

11 Ήρθε, λοιπόν, ο Γαδ στο Δαβίδ και του είπε: «Άκου τι λέει ο Κύριος: Διάλεξε τι θέλεις· 12 τρία χρόνια πείνα· τρεις μήνες ήττες από τους εχθρούς σου και να μην προλαβαίνεις να γλιτώσεις από το ξίφος τους ή για τρεις μέρες το ξίφος του Κυρίου να χτυπάει τη χώρα κι ο εξολοθρευτής άγγελός του να σκορπίζει θανατικό σ’ όλη την έκταση του Ισραήλ; Σκέψου τώρα κι αποφάσισε τι απάντηση θα δώσω σ’ εκείνον που μ’ έστειλε».

13 Ο Δαβίδ απάντησε στο Γαδ: «Βρίσκομαι σε πολύ δύσκολη θέση. Ας πέσω στα χέρια του Κυρίου, γιατί είναι πολυεύσπλαχνος· ας μην πέσω σε ανθρώπινα χέρια».

14 Έτσι ο Κύριος έστειλε μια θανατηφόρα επιδημία στους Ισραηλίτες και πέθαναν εβδομήντα χιλιάδες άνθρωποι. 15 Ο Θεός έστειλε στην Ιερουσαλήμ έναν εξολοθρευτή άγγελο για να την καταστρέψει. Κι όταν είδε τον άγγελο να την καταστρέφει, μετάνιωσε για το κακό και τον πρόσταξε: «Φτάνει! Τράβα το χέρι σου».

Ο άγγελος του Κυρίου στάθηκε κοντά στο αλώνι του Ορνά του Ιεβουσαίου. 16 Ο Δαβίδ σήκωσε τα μάτια του και είδε τον άγγελο του Κυρίου να στέκεται ανάμεσα στον ουρανό και στη γη, με γυμνό ξίφος στο χέρι του, στραμμένο προς την Ιερουσαλήμ. Τότε ο Δαβίδ και οι πρεσβύτεροι, ντυμένοι στα πένθιμα, έπεσαν με το πρόσωπο στη γη. 17 Και ο Δαβίδ είπε στο Θεό: «Εγώ διέταξα να απαριθμήσουν το λαό! Εκείνος που αμάρτησε κι ανόμησε, λοιπόν, είμαι εγώ. Αυτά τα πρόβατα τι έκαναν; Χτύπα, λοιπόν, εμένα και την οικογένειά μου, Κύριε Θεέ μου, και όχι να φέρεις αρρώστια στο λαό σου».

18 Τότε ο άγγελος του Κυρίου πρόσταξε το Γαδ: «Πες στο Δαβίδ ν’ ανεβεί στο αλώνι του Ορνά του Ιεβουσαίου και να χτίσει εκεί θυσιαστήριο στον Κύριο». 19 Πράγματι, ο Δαβίδ πήγε σύμφωνα με τη διαταγή που του έδωσε ο Κύριος μέσω του Γαδ. 20 Ο Ορνά αλώνιζε σιτάρι, όταν γύρισε και είδε τον άγγελο. Οι τέσσερις γιοι του που ήταν μαζί του κρύφτηκαν.

21 Ο Δαβίδ πήγε στον Ορνά, κι αυτός όταν τον είδε βγήκε από το αλώνι και τον προσκύνησε με το πρόσωπό του στη γη. 22 Ο Δαβίδ είπε στον Ορνά: «Δώσε μου τον τόπο του αλωνιού σου για να χτίσω εδώ θυσιαστήριο στον Κύριο· δώστο μου στην πραγματική του αξία, για να σταματήσει η πληγή που ’χει ξεσπάσει στο λαό». 23 Ο Ορνά του απάντησε: «Πάρ’ το δικό σου, κύριέ μου βασιλιά, και κάνε το ό,τι θέλεις. Ορίστε, σου δίνω τα βόδια για τα ολοκαυτώματα, τα αλωνιστικά εργαλεία για τα ξύλα της φωτιάς και το σιτάρι για την αναίμακτη προσφορά· τα δίνω όλα». 24 Αλλά ο βασιλιάς είπε στον Ορνά: «Όχι· θέλω να το αγοράσω στην πραγματική του αξία. Δε θα πάρω για τον Κύριο κάτι που είναι δικό σου, ούτε θα του προσφέρω ολοκαυτώματα που δε μου στοίχισαν τίποτα».

25 Έτσι πλήρωσε ο Δαβίδ στον Ορνά για τον τόπο χρυσάφι, το οποίο ζύγιζε εξακόσιους σίκλους. 26 Εκεί έχτισε θυσιαστήριο στον Κύριο και πρόσφερε ολοκαυτώματα και θυσίες κοινωνίας. Επικαλέσθηκε τον Κύριο και ο Κύριος του αποκρίθηκε στέλνοντας φωτιά από τον ουρανό πάνω στο θυσιαστήριο του ολοκαυτώματος. 27 Τότε ο Κύριος πρόσταξε τον άγγελο να ξαναβάλει το ξίφος στη θήκη του.

28 Ο Δαβίδ κατάλαβε ότι ο Κύριος τον είχε ακούσει που προσευχήθηκε στο αλώνι του Ορνά του Ιεβουσαίου· έτσι από τότε πρόσφερε εκεί θυσίες. 29 Βέβαια, η σκηνή του Κυρίου που είχε κάνει ο Μωυσής στην έρημο και το θυσιαστήριο των ολοκαυτωμάτων εκείνο τον καιρό βρίσκονταν στον ιερό τόπο στη Γαβαών. 30 Αλλά ο Δαβίδ δεν μπορούσε να πάει εκεί για να συμβουλευτεί τον Κύριο, γιατί τον κατείχε δέος από το ξίφος του αγγέλου του Κυρίου.

1 And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. 2 And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beer-sheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it. 3 And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel? 4 Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.

5 And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword. 6 But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.

7 And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.*21.7 And…: Heb. And it was evil in the eyes of the LORD concerning this thing 8 And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

9 And the LORD spake unto Gad, David’s seer, saying, 10 Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.*21.10 offer: Heb. stretch out 11 So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee*21.11 Choose…: Heb. Take to thee 12 Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me. 13 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.*21.13 very great: or, very many

14 So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men. 15 And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.*21.15 Ornan: also called, Araunah 16 And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces. 17 And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.

18 Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite. 19 And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD. 20 And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.*21.20 And Ornan…: or, When Ornan turned back and saw the angel, then he and his four sons with him hid themselves 21 And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground. 22 Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.*21.22 Grant: Heb. Give 23 And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all. 24 And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost. 25 So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight. 26 And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering. 27 And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.

28 At that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there. 29 For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at Gibeon. 30 But David could not go before it to enquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
