1 Όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες ήρθαν στο Δαβίδ, στη Χεβρών, και του είπαν: «Εμείς είμαστε σάρκα σου και αίμα σου. 2 Στο παρελθόν, όταν ακόμα ήταν βασιλιάς ο Σαούλ, εσύ οδηγούσες τα στρατεύματα του Ισραήλ στον πόλεμο και τα έφερνες πίσω. Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σου, σου είχε πει ότι εσύ θα οδηγούσες κάποτε το λαό του, τον Ισραήλ, και θα γινόσουν ηγεμόνας του».

3 Έτσι, όλοι οι πρεσβύτεροι του λαού Ισραήλ ήρθαν στο βασιλιά Δαβίδ, στη Χεβρών, κι εκείνος έκανε εκεί μ’ αυτούς συμφωνία ενώπιον του Κυρίου. Και έχρισαν το Δαβίδ βασιλιά του Ισραήλ, σύμφωνα με το λόγο του Κυρίου, που τον είχε αναγγείλει ο Σαμουήλ.

4 Ο Δαβίδ και όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες πήγαν να πολιορκήσουν την Ιερουσαλήμ. Η πόλη μέχρι τότε ονομαζόταν Ιεβούς, γιατί εκεί κατοικούσαν οι Ιεβουσαίοι, οι αρχικοί της κάτοικοι. 5 Οι Ιεβουσαίοι είπαν στο Δαβίδ: «Δε θα μπεις στην πόλη μας».

Αλλά ο Δαβίδ κυρίεψε το φρούριο της Σιών, που ονομάστηκε στη συνέχεια «Πόλη Δαβίδ». 6 Ο Δαβίδ είχε πει: «Ο πρώτος που θα σκοτώσει Ιεβουσαίο θα γίνει αρχιστράτηγος». Πρώτος επιτέθηκε ο Ιωάβ, γιος της Σερουΐας, κι έτσι έγινε αρχιστράτηγος. 7 Ο Δαβίδ εγκαταστάθηκε στο φρούριο και γι’ αυτό το ονόμασαν «Πόλη Δαβίδ». 8 Έπειτα έχτισε καινούριους οικισμούς γύρω από τη Μιλλώ και το υπόλοιπο της πόλης το ανοικοδόμησε ο Ιωάβ. 9 Έτσι ο Δαβίδ γινόταν όλο και πιο ισχυρός, γιατί ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος ήταν μαζί του.

10 Ακολουθεί κατάλογος των αξιωματικών των επίλεκτων πολεμιστών του Δαβίδ. Αυτοί μαζί με όλους τους Ισραηλίτες τον ανακήρυξαν βασιλιά, σύμφωνα με το λόγο του Κυρίου σχετικά με το λαό Ισραήλ και αγωνίστηκαν να διατηρήσουν το βασίλειό του ισχυρό. 11 Στον κατάλογο των επίλεκτων του Δαβίδ, πρώτος ήταν:

Ο Ιασωβεάμ, απόγονος του Χαχμονί και αρχηγός του σώματος των επιλέκτων. Αυτός, κραδαίνοντας τη λόγχη του ενάντια σε τριακόσιους εχθρούς, τούς σκότωσε όλους σε μία μόνο μάχη. 12 Δεύτερος μετά απ’ αυτόν ήταν ο Ελεάζαρ, γιος του Δωδώ, του Αχωχίτη. Ανήκε στην ομάδα των Τριών Επιλέκτων. 13 Αυτός ήταν μαζί με το Δαβίδ στην Πας-Δαμμίμ. Οι Φιλισταίοι είχαν συγκεντρωθεί για πόλεμο εκεί που ήταν ένα χωράφι σπαρμένο κριθάρι. Μόλις οι Ισραηλίτες είδαν τους Φιλισταίους, τράπηκαν σε φυγή. 14 Αλλά ο Ελεάζαρ και ο Δαβίδ στάθηκαν στη μέση του χωραφιού, το ελευθέρωσαν και πολέμησαν τους Φιλισταίους. Ο Θεός τούς έδωσε έτσι μια μεγάλη νίκη.

15 Τρεις από το σώμα των Τριάντα Επιλέκτων κατέβηκαν μια μέρα να βρουν το Δαβίδ στο βράχο, που ήταν κοντά στο σπήλαιο Αδουλλάμ, γιατί οι Φιλισταίοι είχαν στρατοπεδεύσει στην κοιλάδα Ρεφαείμ. 16 Ο Δαβίδ ήταν τότε στο οχύρωμα, και η φρουρά των Φιλισταίων βρισκόταν στη Βηθλεέμ. 17 Ο Δαβίδ εκδήλωσε την επιθυμία του και είπε: «Ποιος θα μου φέρει να πιω νερό από το πηγάδι που είναι στην πύλη της Βηθλεέμ;» 18 Τότε οι Τρεις Επίλεκτοι πέρασαν μέσα από το στρατόπεδο των Φιλισταίων και έβγαλαν νερό από το πηγάδι· το πήραν και το έφεραν στο Δαβίδ. Εκείνος όμως δε θέλησε να πιει και το πρόσφερε σπονδή στο Θεό, 19 λέγοντας: «Φύλαξέ με, Θεέ μου, να μην πιω αυτό το νερό! Θα ήταν σαν να έπινα το αίμα αυτών των αντρών, που πήγαν με κίνδυνο της ζωής τους να μου το φέρουν». Έτσι, αρνήθηκε να το πιει. Αυτά έκαναν οι Τρεις Επίλεκτοι.

20 Ο Αβισάι, αδερφός του Ιωάβ, ήταν αρχηγός του σώματος των Τριάντα Επιλέκτων.*Τριάντα Επιλέκτων, σύμφωνα με μια αρχ. μετ. και τα παράλληλα του Β΄ Σαμ. Το εβρ. έχει «Τριών - Τρεις». Αυτός, μια μέρα κραδαίνοντας τη λόγχη ενάντια σε τριακόσιους εχθρούς, τούς σκότωσε κι έγινε ο πιο φημισμένος ανάμεσα στους Τριάντα. 21 Ήταν ο σπουδαιότερος και ο επικρατέστερος από τους Τριάντα κι έγινε αρχηγός τους, αλλά δεν έφτασε τους Τρεις. 22 Ο Βεναΐας, από την Καβσεήλ, γιος του Ιεωϊαδά, ανήκε στους επίλεκτους και έκανε πολλά κατορθώματα. Σκότωσε δύο πολύ δυνατούς Μωαβίτες πολεμιστές, που ονομάζονταν «Τα Λιοντάρια της Μωάβ». Επίσης, μια μέρα που χιόνιζε, κατέβηκε σ’ ένα λάκκο, όπου είχε πέσει ένα μεγάλο λιοντάρι, και το σκότωσε. 23 Ακόμη σκότωσε έναν μεγαλόσωμο Αιγύπτιο, πέντε πήχεις ψηλόν, που κρατούσε στο χέρι του ένα ακόντιο, χοντρό σαν αντί του αργαλειού. Του επιτέθηκε μ’ ένα ραβδί, του άρπαξε το ακόντιο από το χέρι και τον σκότωσε με το ίδιο του το όπλο. 24 Αυτά ήταν τα κατορθώματα του Βεναΐα, γιου του Ιεωϊαδά κι έτσι απέκτησε όνομα ανάμεσα στους Τριάντα Επίλεκτους. 25 Αυτός πράγματι ήταν φημισμένος μέσα στο σώμα των Τριάντα, αλλά δεν έφτασε τους Τρεις Επίλεκτους. Ο Δαβίδ τον είχε διορίσει αρχηγό της σωματοφυλακής του.

26 Επίσης στο σώμα των επίλεκτων πολεμιστών ανήκαν: ο Ασαήλ, αδερφός του Ιωάβ· ο Ελχανάν, γιος του Δωδώ από τη Βηθλεέμ· 27 ο Σαμμώθ από την Αρώρ· ο Χαλής από την Πέλεθ· 28 ο Ιρά, γιος του Ικκές, από την Τεκωά· ο Αβιέζερ, από την Αναθώθ· 29 ο Σιββεχαΐ από τη Χουσά· ο Ιλαΐ από την Αχώαχ· 30 ο Μαεραΐ και ο Χελέδ, γιος του Βαανά, και οι δυο από τη Νετωφά· 31 ο Ιθαΐ, γιος του Ριβαΐ από τη Γιβεά της περιοχής της φυλής Βενιαμίν· ο Βεναΐας από τη Φαραθών· 32 ο Χουραΐ από τη Γαάς· ο Αβιήλ από τη Βαιθ-Αραβά· 33 ο Ασμαβέθ από τη Βαχαρούμ· ο Ελιαββά από τη Σααλβίμ· 34 ο Ασέμ*Ασέμ.
