1 Ο Δαβίδ είχε πια εγκατασταθεί στο ανάκτορό του. Μια μέρα είπε στον προφήτη Νάθαν: «Εγώ κατοικώ σε παλάτι καμωμένο από κέδρους, ενώ η κιβωτός της διαθήκης του Κυρίου βρίσκεται μέσα σε σκηνή». 2 Ο Νάθαν του απάντησε: «Κάνε αυτό που επιθυμείς, γιατί ο Θεός είναι μαζί σου».

3 Αλλά εκείνη τη νύχτα, ο Θεός μίλησε στο Νάθαν και του είπε: 4 «Πήγαινε και πες εκ μέρους μου στο δούλο μου το Δαβίδ: "δε θα μου χτίσεις εσύ ναό για να κατοικήσω. 5 Εγώ δεν κατοίκησα ποτέ σε ναό, από την ημέρα που έβγαλα τους Ισραηλίτες από την Αίγυπτο μέχρι σήμερα· πήγαινα από σκηνή σε σκηνή κι από κατάλυμα σε κατάλυμα. 6 Απ’ όπου κι αν πέρασα με τους Ισραηλίτες, ποτέ μου δεν παραπονέθηκα σε κανέναν από τους Κριτές τους, που τους είχα διατάξει να οδηγούν το λαό μου, ότι δε μου έχτισαν ναό από κέδρους!"

7 »Πες, λοιπόν, στο δούλο μου το Δαβίδ, ότι εγώ, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, λέω: "εγώ σε πήρα από το λιβάδι, όπου έβοσκες τα πρόβατα, και σ’ έκανα ηγεμόνα του λαού μου, του Ισραήλ. 8 Ήμουν μαζί σου παντού, όπου πήγαινες, εξαφάνισα όλους τους εχθρούς σου από μπροστά σου και σ’ έκανα ονομαστό, σαν τους μεγάλους της γης. 9 Όρισα για το λαό μου, τον Ισραήλ, έναν τόπο, όπου τον εγκατέστησα μόνιμα. Δε θα μετακινηθεί πια, ούτε άνθρωποι ασεβείς θα τον καταπιέζουν, όπως τον καταπίεζαν στο παρελθόν, 10 την εποχή, που διόριζα σ’ αυτούς Κριτές. Θα υποτάξω όλους τους εχθρούς σου· και σου αναγγέλλω πως εγώ, ο Κύριος, θα σου χτίσω οίκο.*Βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Σαμ 7:11.11 Όταν τελειώσουν οι μέρες σου και πεθάνεις, θα αναδείξω διάδοχο μετά από σένα έναν γιο σου, κατ’ ευθείαν απόγονό σου, και θα του δώσω μια σταθερή βασιλεία. 12 Αυτός θα μου χτίσει ναό κι εγώ θα κάνω το θρόνο του ακλόνητο για πάντα. 13 Θα είμαι γι’ αυτόν πατέρας κι εκείνος θα μου είναι γιος. Δε θ’ αποσύρω απ’ αυτόν την εύνοιά μου, όπως την απέσυρα από τον προκάτοχό σου. 14 Αλλά θα τον τοποθετήσω βασιλιά, επικεφαλής του λαού μου, για πάντα κι ο θρόνος του θα παραμένει ακλόνητος παντοτινά!»

15 Ο Νάθαν ανάγγειλε στο Δαβίδ όλους αυτούς τους λόγους και το όραμα. 16 Τότε ο βασιλιάς Δαβίδ μπήκε μέσα στη σκηνή, παρουσιάστηκε ενώπιον του Κυρίου και είπε: «Ποιος είμαι εγώ, Κύριέ μου και Θεέ, και ποια η οικογένειά μου, ώστε να με δοξάσεις τόσο πολύ; 17 Και σαν να το θεώρησες μικρό αυτό, Θεέ μου, μίλησες ακόμα και για το μακρινό μέλλον της οικογένειας του δούλου σου. Μου φέρθηκες, Κύριέ μου και Θεέ, σαν να ήμουν κάποιο σπουδαίο πρόσωπο. 18 Τι περισσότερο θα μπορούσα να σου πω εγώ ο δούλος σου ο Δαβίδ, για την τιμή που μου έκανες; Εσύ βέβαια, γνωρίζεις το δούλο σου. 19 Κύριε, όλα αυτά τα μεγάλα έργα τα πραγματοποίησες για χάρη μου, για μένα το δούλου σου, όπως ακριβώς το ήθελες, για να φανερώσεις την απέραντη μεγαλοσύνη σου. 20 Κύριε, κανείς δεν είναι όπως εσύ, και δεν υπάρχει άλλος Θεός εκτός από σένα, όπως ακριβώς το ακούγαμε πάντα να λέγεται. 21 Ποιο άλλο έθνος πάνω στη γη είναι σαν το λαό σου τον Ισραήλ, τον οποίο ένας Θεός ήρθε και τον ελευθέρωσε από την Αίγυπτο για να τον κάνει δικό του λαό; Εσύ μ’ αυτή τη δυναμική σου ενέργεια έκανες το όνομά σου μεγάλο και φοβερό, καθώς εξαφάνιζες τα έθνη στο πέρασμα του λαού σου. 22 Έκανες, Κύριε, το λαό του Ισραήλ δικόν σου για πάντα, κι εσύ έγινες Θεός τους. 23 Και τώρα, Κύριε, ο λόγος που είπες για το δούλο σου και για την οικογένειά του, ας ισχύσει παντοτινά και κάνε όπως είπες. 24 Ας επικρατεί κι ας είναι δοξασμένο το όνομά σου αιώνια, για να λένε ότι ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, αυτός είναι ο Θεός του Ισραήλ! Κι αυτοί που θα διαδεχτούν το δούλο σου το Δαβίδ στο θρόνο, ας είναι ακλόνητοι ενώπιόν σου. 25 Εσύ ο ίδιος, Θεέ μου, φανέρωσες σ’ εμένα το δούλο σου, ότι θα του οικοδομήσεις οίκο.*Βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Σαμ 7:11. Γι’ αυτό και ο δούλος σου πήρα το θάρρος να προσευχηθώ εδώ μπροστά σου. 26 Και τώρα, Κύριε, εσύ είσαι ο Θεός κι όλες αυτές τις ευλογίες τις υποσχέθηκες στο δούλο σου. 27 Ευδόκησες να ευλογήσεις την οικογένεια του δούλου σου, ώστε οι απόγονοί μου να βασιλεύουν για πάντα ενώπιόν σου. Γιατί εκείνος που εσύ, Κύριε, τον ευλόγησες, θα ’ναι για πάντα ευλογημένος».

1 Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD remaineth under curtains. 2 Then Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thine heart; for God is with thee.

3 And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying, 4 Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in: 5 For I have not dwelt in an house since the day that I brought up Israel unto this day; but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another.*17.5 have gone: Heb. have been 6 Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people, saying, Why have ye not built me an house of cedars? 7 Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel:*17.7 from following: Heb. from after 8 And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth. 9 Also I will ordain a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning, 10 And since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. Moreover I will subdue all thine enemies. Furthermore I tell thee that the LORD will build thee an house.

11 And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever. 13 I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee: 14 But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for evermore. 15 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

16 And David the king came and sat before the LORD, and said, Who am I, O LORD God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought me hitherto? 17 And yet this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; for thou hast also spoken of thy servant’s house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O LORD God. 18 What can David speak more to thee for the honour of thy servant? for thou knowest thy servant. 19 O LORD, for thy servant’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.*17.19 great…: Heb. greatnesses 20 O LORD, there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 21 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be his own people, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt? 22 For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever; and thou, LORD, becamest their God. 23 Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said. 24 Let it even be established, that thy name may be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee. 25 For thou, O my God, hast told thy servant that thou wilt build him an house: therefore thy servant hath found in his heart to pray before thee.*17.25 hast…: Heb. hast revealed the ear of thy servant 26 And now, LORD, thou art God, and hast promised this goodness unto thy servant: 27 Now therefore let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may be before thee for ever: for thou blessest, O LORD, and it shall be blessed for ever.*17.27 let…: or, it hath pleased thee
