1 Όταν ο Δαβίδ είχε πια γεράσει πάρα πολύ, έκανε βασιλιά των Ισραηλιτών το γιο του, το Σολομώντα. 2 Έπειτα συγκέντρωσε όλους τους άρχοντες των Ισραηλιτών, τους ιερείς και τους λευίτες.*Η διήγηση συνεχίζεται από εδώ στο κεφ. 28:1.

3 Μετρήθηκαν οι λευίτες από τριάντα ετών και πάνω και βρέθηκαν τριάντα οχτώ χιλιάδες άντρες. 4 «Απ’ αυτούς», είπε ο Δαβίδ, «είκοσι τέσσερις χιλιάδες θα επιβλέπουν τις εργασίες για το χτίσιμο του ναού του Κυρίου, έξι χιλιάδες θα είναι υπάλληλοι και δικαστές, 5 τέσσερις χιλιάδες θυρωροί του ναού και οι υπόλοιπες τέσσερις χιλιάδες θα είναι ψάλτες στον Κύριο με μουσικά όργανα που κατασκεύασα γι’ αυτόν το σκοπό».

6 Ο Δαβίδ χώρισε τους λευίτες σε τμήματα, κατά τις συγγένειες των απογόνων του Λευί: Γηρσών, Καάθ και Μεραρί.

7 Ο Γηρσών είχε γιους το Λαδάν και το Σιμεΐ. 8 Γιοι του Λαδάν ήταν τρεις: Ο Ιεχιήλ, πρωτότοκος, ο Ζεθάμ και ο Ιωήλ. 9 Γιοι του Σιμεΐ*Σιμεΐ. Πιθανώς εδώ αναγράφεται εσφαλμένο όνομα. Οι γιοι του Σιμεΐ αναφέρονται μόνο από το στ. 10 και μετά. Το εβρ. δεν είναι αρκετά σαφές. ήταν τρεις: Οι Σελωμείθ, Αζιήλ και Χαρράν. Όλοι αυτοί ήταν αρχηγοί των οικογενειών που προέρχονταν από το Λαδάν. 10,11 Γιοι του Σιμεΐ κατά σειρά ηλικίας ήταν οι: Ιαάθ, Ζιζά, Ιωάς και Βεριά. Ο Ιωάς και ο Βεριά δεν είχαν πολλούς γιους, γι’ αυτό υπολογίστηκαν σαν μία οικογένεια και μία τάξη.

12 Γιοι του Καάθ ήταν τέσσερις: Οι Αμράμ, Ισάρ, Χεβρών και Ουζζιήλ. 13 Γιοι του Αμράμ ήταν ο Ααρών και ο Μωυσής. Ο Ααρών και οι απόγονοί του αποχωρίστηκαν για να υπηρετούν στα άγια των αγίων, να θυμιάζουν ενώπιον του Κυρίου, να λειτουργούν και να δίνουν την ευλογία στο όνομά του για πάντα. 14 Οι απόγονοι του Μωυσή, ανθρώπου του Θεού, συγκαταλέχθηκαν με τη φυλή Λευί: 15 Γιοι του Μωυσή ήταν ο Γερσώμ και ο Ελιέζερ. 16 Από τους γιους του Γερσώμ, πρώτος ήταν ο Σουβαήλ. 17 Γιος του Ελιέζερ ήταν ο Ρεαβίας, ο αρχηγός. Ο Ελιέζερ δεν είχε άλλους γιους, αλλά οι γιοι του Ρεαβία ήταν πάρα πολλοί. 18 Από τους γιους του Ισάρ, πρώτος ήταν ο Σελωμείθ. 19 Γιοι του Χεβρών ήταν κατά σειρά ηλικίας οι Ιερίας, Αμαρίας, Ουζζιήλ, και Ιεκαμεάμ. 20 Γιοι του Ουζζιήλ ήταν ο Μιχά, πρώτος και ο Ισιά δεύτερος.

21 Γιοι του Μεραρί ήταν οι Μαχλί και Μουσί· γιοι του Μαχλί, οι Ελεάζαρ και Κις. 22 Ο Ελεάζαρ πέθανε χωρίς ν’ αφήσει γιους, παρά μόνο κόρες, τις οποίες τις παντρεύτηκαν οι ξάδερφοί τους, οι γιοι του Κις. 23 Γιοι του Μουσί ήταν τρεις: οι Μαχλί, Έδερ και Ιερεμώθ.

24 Όλοι αυτοί ήταν κατά οικογένειες οι απόγονοι του Λευί, αρχηγοί των αντίστοιχων οικογενειών, εγγεγραμμένοι ένας ένας στους καταλόγους ονομαστικά· αυτοί υπηρετούσαν στο ναό του Κυρίου από είκοσι ετών και πάνω. 25 Ο Δαβίδ είχε πει:

«Τώρα που ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, εξασφάλισε ειρήνη στο λαό του και ο ίδιος θα κατοικεί πλέον για πάντα στην Ιερουσαλήμ, 26 οι λευίτες στο μέλλον δε θα έχουν να μεταφέρουν τη σκηνή και τα σκεύη που χρησίμευαν για την υπηρεσία σ’ αυτήν». 27 Σύμφωνα μ’ αυτήν την απόφαση του Δαβίδ, οι λευίτες εγγράφονται στους καταλόγους από είκοσι ετών και πάνω. 28 Είναι υπό τις διαταγές των απογόνων του Ααρών για την υπηρεσία στο ναό του Κυρίου, στις αυλές και στα παραοικοδομήματα του ναού. Φροντίζουν για την καθαρότητα όλων των ιερών σκευών και επιτελούν συγκεκριμένες εργασίες στο ναό του Θεού: 29 Φροντίζουν δηλαδή για τους άρτους της προθέσεως, για το σιμιγδάλι των προσφορών, για τα άζυμα ψωμιά, για τις τηγανίτες και τα γλυκίσματα, και ελέγχουν τα μέτρα και τα σταθμά. 30 Οφείλουν να βρίσκονται εκεί κάθε πρωί και κάθε βράδυ για να υμνούν και να δοξολογούν τον Κύριο, 31 όπως και κάθε φορά που προσφέρονται στον Κύριο ολοκαυτώματα, τα Σάββατα, τις νουμηνίες και όλες τις επίσημες εορτές. Θα εκτελούν τα καθήκοντά τους αδιάκοπα ενώπιον του Κυρίου, σύμφωνα με τον αριθμό που ορίζει ο κανονισμός. 32 Είναι επίσης επιφορτισμένοι να φροντίζουν τη σκηνή του Μαρτυρίου και του αγιαστηρίου και να βοηθούν τους συγγενείς τους ιερείς, απογόνους του Ααρών, στην υπηρεσία του ναού του Κυρίου.

These were the chief of the fathers of Laadan. 10 And the sons of Shimei were, Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. 12 The sons of Kohath; Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four. 13 The sons of Amram; Aaron and Moses: and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons for ever, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister unto him, and to bless in his name for ever. 14 Now concerning Moses the man of God, his sons were named of the tribe of Levi. 15 The sons of Moses were, Gershom, and Eliezer. 16 Of the sons of Gershom, Shebuel was the chief.*23.16 Shebuel: also called, Shubael 17 And the sons of Eliezer were, Rehabiah the chief. And Eliezer had none other sons; but the sons of Rehabiah were very many.*23.17 the chief: or, the first*23.17 very many: Heb. highly multiplied 18 Of the sons of Izhar; Shelomith the chief.*23.18 Shelomith: also called, Shelomoth 19 Of the sons of Hebron; Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth. 20 Of the sons of Uzziel; Michah the first, and Jesiah the second.

21 The sons of Merari; Mahli, and Mushi. The sons of Mahli; Eleazar, and Kish. 22 And Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters: and their brethren the sons of Kish took them.*23.22 brethren: or, kinsmen 23 The sons of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three.

24 These were the sons of Levi after the house of their fathers; even the chief of the fathers, as they were counted by number of names by their polls, that did the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from the age of twenty years and upward. 25 For David said, The LORD God of Israel hath given rest unto his people, that they may dwell in Jerusalem for ever:*23.25 that…: or, and he dwelleth in Jerusalem, etc 26 And also unto the Levites; they shall no more carry the tabernacle, nor any vessels of it for the service thereof. 27 For by the last words of David the Levites were numbered from twenty years old and above:*23.27 numbered: Heb. number 28 Because their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God;*23.28 their…: Heb. their station was at the hand of the sons of Aaron 29 Both for the shewbread, and for the fine flour for meat offering, and for the unleavened cakes, and for that which is baked in the pan, and for that which is fried, and for all manner of measure and size;*23.29 pan: or, flat plate 30 And to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at even; 31 And to offer all burnt sacrifices unto the LORD in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded unto them, continually before the LORD: 32 And that they should keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, in the service of the house of the LORD.
