1 Ο Δαβίδ έχτισε για τον εαυτό του διάφορες κατοικίες στην Πόλη Δαβίδ. Ετοίμασε κι έναν τόπο όπου έστησε μια σκηνή για να στεγάσει την κιβωτό του Θεού. 2 Τότε είπε: «Κανείς δεν πρέπει να μεταφέρει την κιβωτό του Θεού, εκτός από τους λευίτες. Αυτούς διάλεξε ο Κύριος, για να μεταφέρουν την κιβωτό του και να τον υπηρετούν για πάντα».

3 Έτσι ο Δαβίδ συγκέντρωσε όλους τους Ισραηλίτες στην Ιερουσαλήμ, για να μεταφέρουν την κιβωτό του Κυρίου στον τόπο που είχε ετοιμάσει γι’ αυτήν. 4 Έπειτα συγκέντρωσε τους ιερείς, τους απογόνους του Ααρών και τους λευίτες.

5 Από τους απογόνους του Καάθ ήρθε ο Ουριήλ, επικεφαλής εκατόν είκοσι λευιτών. 6 Από τους απογόνους του Μεραρί ήρθε ο Ασαΐας, επικεφαλής διακοσίων είκοσι λευιτών. 7 Από τους απογόνους του Γηρσών, ο Ιωήλ επικεφαλής εκατόν τριάντα λευιτών. 8 Από τους απογόνους του Ελισαφάν, ο Σεμαΐας επικεφαλής διακοσίων λευιτών. 9 Από τους απογόνους του Χεβρών, ο Ελιήλ επικεφαλής ογδόντα λευιτών. 10 Από τους απογόνους του Ουζζιήλ ήρθε ο Αμιναδάβ, επικεφαλής εκατόν δώδεκα λευιτών.

11 Έπειτα ο Δαβίδ κάλεσε τους ιερείς Σαδώκ και Αβιάθαρ, μαζί με τους λευΐτες Ουριήλ, Ασαΐα, Ιωήλ, Σεμαΐα, Ελιήλ και Αμιναδάβ, 12 και τους είπε: «Όλοι εσείς που είστε αρχηγοί λευιτικών οικογενειών, πρέπει να καθαριστείτε τελετουργικά, καθώς και οι λευίτες που ήρθαν μαζί σας, και μετά να πάτε να μεταφέρετε την κιβωτό του Κυρίου, του Θεού του Ισραήλ, στον τόπο που έχω ετοιμάσει γι’ αυτήν. 13 Την πρώτη φορά*την πρώτη φορά. Ενν. τα γεγονότα που αναφέρονται στο κεφ. 13:9-11. δεν τη μεταφέρατε εσείς, και γι’ αυτό ο Κύριος ο Θεός μας έφερε εναντίον μας θανατηφόρο πλήγμα. Είν’ αλήθεια ότι δεν είχαμε φροντίσει γι’ αυτήν σύμφωνα με τις γραπτές εντολές». 14 Έτσι οι ιερείς και οι λευίτες καθαρίστηκαν, προκειμένου να μεταφέρουν την κιβωτό του Κυρίου, του Θεού του Ισραήλ. 15 Τη σήκωσαν οι λευίτες στους ώμους τους με τις δοκούς της, όπως είχε διατάξει ο Μωυσής, σύμφωνα με το λόγο του Κυρίου.

16 Ο Δαβίδ διέταξε τους αρχηγούς των λευιτών να διορίσουν από τις συγγένειές τους τούς ψαλμωδούς για να ψάλλουν, και να τους συνοδεύουν μουσικά όργανα: άρπες, κιθάρες και κύμβαλα, έτσι που οι χαρούμενες ψαλμωδίες ν’ ακούγονται ως πέρα στα βουνά. 17 Διόρισαν, λοιπόν, τον Αιμάν γιο του Ιωήλ, τον Ασάφ γιο του Βερεχία και τον Εθάν γιο του Κουσαΐα, απογόνους του Μεραρί. 18 Μαζί μ’ αυτούς διόρισαν σε δεύτερη θέση, ως θυρωρούς του ναού, τους επίσης λευίτες, Ζαχαρία,*Το εβραϊκό προσθέτει τη λέξη «γιος» η οποία είναι ασυμβίβαστη στη συνάφεια του κειμένου. Ουζζιήλ, Σεμιραμώθ, Ιεχιήλ, Ουννί, Ελιάβ, Βεναΐα, Μαασεΐα, Ματταθία, Ελιφελεού, Μικνεΐα, Ωβήδ-Εδώμ και Ιεϊήλ. 19 Έτσι οι ψαλμωδοί Αιμάν, Ασάφ και Εθάν, ορίστηκαν να παίζουν τα χάλκινα κύμβαλα με τον οξύ ήχο. 20 Οι Ζαχαρίας, Ιααζιήλ, Σεμιραμώθ, Ιεϊήλ,*Το εβραϊκό προσθέτει «οι θυρωροί» αλλά σύμφωνα με το στ. 21 όλοι αυτοί που αναφέρθηκαν ήταν ψάλτες και μουσικοί. Ουννί, Ελιάβ, Μαασεΐας και Βεναΐας, ορίστηκαν να παίζουν τις άρπες, σε υψηλούς τόνους. 21 Οι Ματταθίας, Ελιφελεού, Μικνεΐας, Ωβήδ-Εδώμ, Ιεϊήλ και Αζαζίας, ορίστηκαν να παίζουν τις κιθάρες στους χαμηλούς ήχους,*Η μουσική ορολογία στους στ. 20-21 είναι αβέβαιη. και κρατούσαν τον τόνο στο τραγούδι.

22 Ο Κενανίας, λόγω της μουσικής πείρας του, ήταν προϊστάμενος των λευιτών που μετέφεραν την κιβωτό. 23 Ο Βερεχίας και ο Ελκανά βάδιζαν εμπροσθοφυλακή πριν από την κιβωτό. 24 Οι ιερείς Σεβανίας, Ιωσαφάτ, Ναθαναήλ, Αμασαΐ, Ζαχαρίας, Βεναΐας και Ελιέζερ βάδιζαν κι αυτοί μπροστά από την κιβωτό του Θεού σαλπίζοντας με τις σάλπιγγες. Ο Ωβήδ-Εδώμ και ο Ιεχιά ήταν οι οπισθοφύλακες της κιβωτού.

25 Ο Δαβίδ, οι πρεσβύτεροι του Ισραήλ και οι χιλίαρχοι πήγαν με χαρά να πάρουν την κιβωτό της διαθήκης του Κυρίου από το σπίτι του Ωβήδ-Εδώμ. 26 Ο Θεός προστάτευσε τους λευίτες που μετέφεραν την κιβωτό της διαθήκης του Κυρίου και γι’ αυτό του πρόσφεραν θυσία εφτά ταύρους και εφτά κριάρια. 27 Ο Δαβίδ φορούσε στολή από λεπτό λινό ύφασμα, όπως και όλοι οι λευίτες, που σήκωναν την κιβωτό, οι ψάλτες και ο Κενενίας, ο υπεύθυνος για τη μεταφορά. Ο Δαβίδ φορούσε και το εφώδ, που ήταν κι αυτό από λινό ύφασμα. 28 Έτσι όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες μετέφεραν στην Ιερουσαλήμ την κιβωτό της διαθήκης του Κυρίου με αλαλαγμούς, με ήχους κεράτινων και χάλκινων σαλπίγγων, με κύμβαλα, με άρπες και κιθάρες.

29 Ενώ η κιβωτός της διαθήκης του Κυρίου έμπαινε στην Πόλη Δαβίδ, η γυναίκα του η Μιχάλ, κόρη του Σαούλ, έσκυψε από το παράθυρο και είδε το βασιλιά Δαβίδ να χοροπηδάει από τη χαρά του· κι ένιωσε βαθιά περιφρόνηση γι’ αυτόν.

1 And David made him houses in the city of David, and prepared a place for the ark of God, and pitched for it a tent. 2 Then David said, None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites: for them hath the LORD chosen to carry the ark of God, and to minister unto him for ever.*15.2 None…: Heb. It is not to carry the ark of God, but for the Levites 3 And David gathered all Israel together to Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the LORD unto his place, which he had prepared for it. 4 And David assembled the children of Aaron, and the Levites: 5 Of the sons of Kohath; Uriel the chief, and his brethren an hundred and twenty:*15.5 brethren: or, kinsmen 6 Of the sons of Merari; Asaiah the chief, and his brethren two hundred and twenty: 7 Of the sons of Gershom; Joel the chief, and his brethren an hundred and thirty: 8 Of the sons of Elizaphan; Shemaiah the chief, and his brethren two hundred: 9 Of the sons of Hebron; Eliel the chief, and his brethren fourscore: 10 Of the sons of Uzziel; Amminadab the chief, and his brethren an hundred and twelve. 11 And David called for Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and for the Levites, for Uriel, Asaiah, and Joel, Shemaiah, and Eliel, and Amminadab, 12 And said unto them, Ye are the chief of the fathers of the Levites: sanctify yourselves, both ye and your brethren, that ye may bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel unto the place that I have prepared for it. 13 For because ye did it not at the first, the LORD our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not after the due order. 14 So the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel. 15 And the children of the Levites bare the ark of God upon their shoulders with the staves thereon, as Moses commanded according to the word of the LORD. 16 And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of musick, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy. 17 So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel; and of his brethren, Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari their brethren, Ethan the son of Kushaiah; 18 And with them their brethren of the second degree, Zechariah, Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, the porters. 19 So the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were appointed to sound with cymbals of brass; 20 And Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with psalteries on Alamoth; 21 And Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps on the Sheminith to excel.*15.21 on the…: or, on the eighth to oversee 22 And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was for song: he instructed about the song, because he was skilful.*15.22 was for…: or, was for the carriage: he instructed about the carriage*15.22 song: Heb. lifting up 23 And Berechiah and Elkanah were doorkeepers for the ark. 24 And Shebaniah, and Jehoshaphat, and Nethaneel, and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, did blow with the trumpets before the ark of God: and Obed-edom and Jehiah were doorkeepers for the ark.

25 So David, and the elders of Israel, and the captains over thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the house of Obed-edom with joy. 26 And it came to pass, when God helped the Levites that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, that they offered seven bullocks and seven rams. 27 And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the Levites that bare the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the song with the singers: David also had upon him an ephod of linen.*15.27 song: or, carriage 28 Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouting, and with sound of the cornet, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, making a noise with psalteries and harps.

29 And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of the LORD came to the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looking out at a window saw king David dancing and playing: and she despised him in her heart.
