1 Την εποχή που ο Δαβίδ κρυβόταν στη Σικλάγ, για να γλιτώσει από το Σαούλ, γιο του Κις, πήγαν και τον βρήκαν μερικοί εκπαιδευμένοι άντρες, έτοιμοι να πολεμήσουν στο πλευρό του. 2 Ήταν οπλισμένοι με τόξα και σφεντόνες, και μπορούσαν να ρίχνουν βέλη και πέτρες, χρησιμοποιώντας τόσο το δεξί όσο και το αριστερό χέρι. Ανήκαν στη φυλή Βενιαμίν, στην οποία ανήκε κι ο Σαούλ.

3 Τα ονόματά τους ήταν: Αχιέζερ, ο αρχηγός, κι ο αδερφός του ο Ιωάς, γιοι του Σεμαά, από τη Γιβεά· Ιεζιήλ και Ιωφαλήτ, γιοι του Αζμαβέθ· Βεραχά και Ιηού από την Αναθώθ· 4 Ισμαΐα από τη Γαβαών, ένας από το «σώμα των Τριάντα Επιλέκτων»*σώμα των Τριάντα Επιλέκτων. Βλ. Β΄ Σαμ 23:8-39. – Σε ορισμένες μετ. οι στ. 12:4-5 είναι ενωμένοι ως 12:4· συνεπώς οι στ. 12:5-41 αριθμούνται σ’ αυτές ως 12:4β-40. και κάποτε αρχηγός τους· 5 Ιερεμίας, Ιεζιήλ, Ιωχανάν και Ιωζαβέθ από τη Γαδαρά· 6 Ελουζαΐ, Ιεριμώθ, Βεαλίας, Σαμαραΐας και Σεφατίας από τη Χαρούφ· 7 Ελκανά, Ιεσιά, Αζαρεήλ, Ιωεζέρ και Ιασωβεάμ, Κορίτες· 8 Ιωηλά και Ζεβαδίας, γιοι του Ιεροάμ από τη Γεδώρ.

9 Μερικοί από τη φυλή Γαδ χωρίστηκαν από τους δικούς τους, και ήρθαν να βρουν το Δαβίδ στο οχύρωμά του στην έρημο. Ήταν γενναίοι άντρες, εμπειροπόλεμοι, ασκημένοι στην ασπίδα και στη λόγχη. Τα πρόσωπά τους έμοιαζαν με πρόσωπα λιονταριών κι έτρεχαν όπως τα ελάφια στα βουνά. 10 Αυτοί ήταν ένδεκα, οι Έζερ, Οβαδίας, Ελιάβ, 11 Μεσμανεά, Ιερμιά, 12 Αταΐ, Ελιήλ, 13 Ιωχανάν, Ελζαβάδ, 14 Ιερεμίας και Μαχβανναΐ.

15 Όλοι αυτοί οι Γαδίτες ήταν αξιωματικοί του στρατεύματος· άλλος ήταν αρχηγός σε εκατό, αν ήταν χαμηλόβαθμος, κι άλλος αρχηγός σε χίλιους, αν ήταν υψηλόβαθμος. 16 Ήταν εκείνοι που πέρασαν τον Ιορδάνη, τον πρώτο μήνα του χρόνου, την εποχή που πλημμυρίζουν οι όχθες του, και έτρεψαν σε φυγή όλους τους κατοίκους των γύρω κοιλάδων και στην ανατολική όχθη και στη δυτική.

17 Πήγαν ακόμα και μερικοί από τη φυλή Βενιαμίν κι από τη φυλή Ιούδα, να βρουν το Δαβίδ στο οχύρωμά του. 18 Ο Δαβίδ βγήκε να τους συναντήσει και τους είπε: «Αν ήρθατε σαν φίλοι, για να με βοηθήσετε, είμαι έτοιμος να σας δεχτώ μ’ όλη μου την καρδιά· αλλά αν ήρθατε για να με προδώσετε στους εχθρούς μου, ενώ εγώ δεν έχω κάνει καμιά αδικία, ο Θεός των προγόνων μας ας δει και ας σας κρίνει γι’ αυτό». 19 Τότε το Πνεύμα του Θεού φώτισε τον Αμασαΐ, τελευταίο αρχηγό των Τριάντα Επιλέκτων, και του είπε:

«Δικοί σου είμαστε, Δαβίδ,

με το μέρος σου είμαστε, γιε του Ιεσσαί.

Ειρήνη, ειρήνη σ’ εσένα

και ειρήνη σ’ αυτούς που σε βοηθούν,

γιατί ο Θεός σου είναι βοηθός σου!»

Τότε ο Δαβίδ τους δέχτηκε και τους διόρισε αρχηγούς του στρατεύματος. 20 Μερικοί από τη φυλή Μανασσή πήγαν με το μέρος του Δαβίδ, όταν πήγε με τους Φιλισταίους για να πολεμήσει ενάντια στο Σαούλ. Τελικά, όμως, δεν πολέμησε στο πλευρό των Φιλισταίων, γιατί οι αρχηγοί τους, έκαναν συμβούλιο και τον απομάκρυναν, γιατί φοβήθηκαν μήπως πάει με το μέρος του Σαούλ, που ήταν πρωτύτερα κύριός του, και στραφεί εναντίον τους. 21 Κι ενώ ο Δαβίδ γύριζε πίσω στη Σικλάγ, τότε πήγαν με το μέρος του μερικοί από τη φυλή Μανασσή, οι Αδνά, Ιωζαβέθ, Ρωδιήλ, Μιχαήλ, Ιωζαβέθ, Ελιού και Σιλθαΐ, οι οποίοι ήταν χιλίαρχοι στο στρατό της φυλής Μανασσή. 22 Όλοι αυτοί ήταν δυνατοί πολεμιστές. Βοήθησαν το Δαβίδ να οργανώσει το στρατό του*να οργανώσει το στρατό του. Άλλη απόδοση: «εναντίον του εκστρατευτικού σώματος». κι έγιναν αρχηγοί στο στράτευμα.

23 Καθημερινά έρχονταν στο Δαβίδ ενισχύσεις, έτσι που σχηματίστηκε ένα στράτευμα τεράστιο.

24 Οι αριθμοί των ετοιμοπόλεμων ανδρών που με εντολή του Κυρίου ενώθηκαν με το στρατό του Δαβίδ στη Χεβρών, για να του μεταβιβάσουν το βασιλικό αξίωμα του Σαούλ, είναι οι εξής:

25 Από τη φυλή Ιούδα, έξι χιλιάδες οκτακόσιοι ετοιμοπόλεμοι άντρες, οπλισμένοι με ασπίδες και λόγχες. 26 Από τη φυλή Συμεών, εφτά χιλιάδες εκατό γενναίοι στρατιώτες. 27 Από τη φυλή Λευί, τέσσερις χιλιάδες εξακόσιοι άντρες. 28 Μαζί τους ήταν κι ο Ιεωϊαδά, αρχηγός της συγγένειας του Ααρών, με τρεις χιλιάδες εφτακόσιους άντρες, 29 κι ακόμα ο Σαδώκ, νέος και γενναίος πολεμιστής, με είκοσι δύο αρχηγούς από τη δική του οικογένεια. 30 Από τη φυλή Βενιαμίν, στην οποία ανήκε κι ο Σαούλ, συμμετείχαν τρεις χιλιάδες άντρες που οι πιο πολλοί απ’ αυτούς ήταν ως τότε στην υπηρεσία του Σαούλ. 31 Από τη φυλή Εφραΐμ είκοσι χιλιάδες οκτακόσιοι γενναίοι πολεμιστές, άντρες ονομαστοί μέσα στις συγγένειές τους. 32 Από τη μισή φυλή Μανασσή δέκα οκτώ χιλιάδες άντρες, που προσκλήθηκαν ονομαστικά, για να έρθουν ν’ ανακηρύξουν βασιλιά το Δαβίδ. 33 Από τη φυλή Ισσάχαρ, διακόσιοι αξιωματικοί, άντρες σοφοί, που γνώριζαν τι έπρεπε να κάνει και πότε ο λαός Ισραήλ, και μαζί τους όλοι όσοι υπηρετούσαν υπό τις διαταγές τους. 34 Από τη φυλή Ζαβουλών, πενήντα χιλιάδες άντρες, καλογυμνασμένοι, έμπειροι στον πόλεμο, έτοιμοι να παραταχθούν για τη μάχη, εξοπλισμένοι με κάθε είδους όπλα και αποφασισμένοι να βοηθήσουν το Δαβίδ με όλη τους την καρδιά. 35 Από τη φυλή Νεφθαλί χίλιοι αξιωματικοί και μαζί τους τριάντα εφτά χιλιάδες άντρες οπλισμένοι με ασπίδες και λόγχες. 36 Από τη φυλή Δαν, είκοσι οκτώ χιλιάδες εξακόσιοι ετοιμοπόλεμοι άντρες. 37 Από τη φυλή Ασήρ σαράντα χιλιάδες άντρες καλογυμνασμένοι, έτοιμοι κι αυτοί να πολεμήσουν σε παράταξη μάχης. 38 Από τις φυλές που είχαν εγκατασταθεί πέρα από τον Ιορδάνη, στην ανατολική όχθη, δηλαδή από τη φυλή Ρουβήν, Γαδ και τη μισή φυλή Μανασσή, εκατόν είκοσι χιλιάδες ετοιμοπόλεμοι άντρες, εφοδιασμένοι με κάθε είδους πολεμικά όπλα.

39 Όλοι αυτοί οι πολεμιστές, έτοιμοι να παραταχθούν σε μάχη, ήρθαν στη Χεβρών με κοινή απόφαση ν’ ανακηρύξουν το Δαβίδ βασιλιά όλων των Ισραηλιτών· επίσης και οι υπόλοιποι Ισραηλίτες ήταν κι αυτοί σύμφωνοι να κάνουν βασιλιά το Δαβίδ. 40 Αυτοί έμειναν εκεί μαζί με το Δαβίδ τρεις μέρες, τρώγοντας και πίνοντας, αφού οι συμπατριώτες τους είχαν κάνει κάθε ετοιμασία γι’ αυτούς. 41 Άνθρωποι από γειτονικές περιοχές, αλλά ακόμα κι από μακρινές, όπως από τις φυλές Ισσάχαρ, Ζαβουλών και Νεφθαλί, έφεραν πάνω σε γαϊδούρια, καμήλες, μουλάρια και βόδια, άφθονες προμήθειες, αλεύρι, πίττες από σύκα, σταφίδες, κρασί, λάδι, ακόμα και πρόβατα και βόδια άφθονα. Κι όλα αυτά γιατί ήταν διάχυτη η χαρά σ’ όλο το λαό Ισραήλ.
