1 Ο Αχαάβ διηγήθηκε στην Ιεζάβελ όλα όσα έκανε ο Ηλίας και πώς κατέσφαξε όλους τους προφήτες του Βάαλ. 2 Τότε εκείνη έστειλε αγγελιοφόρο στον Ηλία και του είπε: «Να με τιμωρήσουν οι θεοί, αν αύριο τέτοια ώρα δε σου κάνω ό,τι έκανες εσύ στους προφήτες».

3 Ο Ηλίας φοβήθηκε και σηκώθηκε κι έφυγε για να σώσει τη ζωή του. Πήγε στη Βέερ-Σεβά, που ανήκει στο βασίλειο του Ιούδα, και άφησε τον υπηρέτη του εκεί. 4 Ο ίδιος βάδισε μιας μέρας δρόμο στην έρημο κι ήρθε και κάθισε κάτω από ένα σπαρτόδεντρο. Παρακαλούσε να πεθάνει κι έλεγε: «Αρκετά ως εδώ, Κύριε! Πάρε τη ζωή μου, γιατί εγώ δεν είμαι καλύτερος από τους προγόνους μου». 5 Μετά ξάπλωσε και τον πήρε ο ύπνος εκεί, κάτω από το σπαρτόδεντρο.

Τότε τον άγγιξε ένας άγγελος και του είπε: «Σήκω, φάγε». 6 Εκείνος γύρισε να δει και στο προσκεφάλι του ήταν μια λαγάνα ψημένη σε καυτές πέτρες και ένα κανάτι νερό. Έφαγε, ήπιε και ξάπλωσε πάλι. 7 Αλλά ο άγγελος του Κυρίου τον άγγιξε για δεύτερη φορά και του είπε: «Σήκω, φάγε, γιατί έχεις ακόμη πολύ δρόμο μπροστά σου».

8 Τότε ο Ηλίας σηκώθηκε, έφαγε και ήπιε και με τη δύναμη εκείνης της τροφής βάδισε σαράντα μερόνυχτα ως το βουνό του Θεού, το Χωρήβ. 9 Εκεί μπήκε σε μια σπηλιά όπου πέρασε τη νύχτα. Τότε του μίλησε ο Κύριος και του είπε: «Τι ζητάς εδωπέρα, Ηλία;» 10 Εκείνος απάντησε: «Εγώ αγωνίστηκα με μεγάλο ζήλο για σένα Κύριε, Θεέ του σύμπαντος. Αλλά οι Ισραηλίτες αθέτησαν τη διαθήκη σου, γκρέμισαν τα θυσιαστήριά σου και κατέσφαξαν τους προφήτες σου· μόνον εγώ απέμεινα και ζητούν κι εμένα να με θανατώσουν».

11 Τότε ο Κύριος είπε στον Ηλία: «Βγες έξω και στάσου στο βουνό ενώπιόν μου» –εκείνη τη στιγμή θα διάβαινε ο Κύριος. Μεγάλος άνεμος και δυνατός έσχιζε τα βουνά και σύντριβε τους βράχους στο πέρασμά του, αλλά ο Κύριος δεν ήταν σ’ εκείνον τον άνεμο. Μετά τον άνεμο έγινε σεισμός, αλλά ούτε στο σεισμό ήταν ο Κύριος. 12 Μετά το σεισμό ήρθε φωτιά, αλλά ούτε στη φωτιά ήταν ο Κύριος. Και μετά τη φωτιά ακούστηκε ένας ήχος από ελαφρό αεράκι.

13 Μόλις το άκουσε ο Ηλίας, σκέπασε το πρόσωπό του με το μανδύα του και βγήκε και στάθηκε στην είσοδο της σπηλιάς. Τότε άκουσε μια φωνή να του λέει: «Τι ζητάς εδωπέρα, Ηλία;» 14 Αυτός απάντησε: «Εγώ αγωνίστηκα με μεγάλο ζήλο για σένα Κύριε, Θεέ του σύμπαντος. Αλλά οι Ισραηλίτες αθέτησαν τη διαθήκη σου, γκρέμισαν τα θυσιαστήριά σου και κατέσφαξαν τους προφήτες σου· μόνον εγώ απέμεινα και ζητούν κι εμένα να με θανατώσουν».

15 Τότε ο Κύριος του είπε: «Εμπρός, πάρε πίσω τον ίδιο δρόμο μέσα απ’ την έρημο και πήγαινε στη Δαμασκό· όταν φτάσεις εκεί, θα χρίσεις τον Αζαήλ βασιλιά των Συρίων. 16 Μετά θα χρίσεις τον Ιηού, γιο του Νιμσί, βασιλιά στον Ισραήλ και τον Ελισαίο, γιο του Σαφάτ, από την Αβέλ-Μεχωλά, θα τον χρίσεις προφήτη για να σε διαδεχτεί. 17 Όποιος σωθεί από το ξίφος του Αζαήλ, θα τον σκοτώσει ο Ιηού· κι όποιος γλιτώσει από τον Ιηού θα τον σκοτώσει ο Ελισαίος. 18 Αλλά θ’ αφήσω απ’ τους Ισραηλίτες ζωντανούς εφτά χιλιάδες, όλους εκείνους που δε γονάτισαν να προσκυνήσουνε το Βάαλ, και που το στόμα τους δεν ασπάστηκε το άγαλμά του».

19 Όταν έφυγε από ’κει ο Ηλίας, συνάντησε τον Ελισαίο, γιο του Σαφάτ, που όργωνε. Μπροστά του πήγαιναν δώδεκα ζευγάρια βόδια κι εκείνος οδηγούσε το δωδέκατο. Ο Ηλίας πέρασε κοντά του και του πέταξε πάνω του το μανδύα του.

20 Τότε ο Ελισαίος άφησε τα βόδια κι έτρεξε πίσω από τον Ηλία. «Σε παρακαλώ», του είπε, «άσε με να πάω να αποχαιρετήσω τον πατέρα μου και τη μάνα μου και μετά θα σε ακολουθήσω». Ο Ηλίας του αποκρίθηκε: «Σ’ εμπόδισα εγώ; Πήγαινε και γύρνα πάλι εδώ». 21 Έτσι ο Ελισαίος ξαναγύρισε· πήρε ένα ζευγάρι βόδια, τα θυσίασε και με τα ξύλα του αλετριού έβρασε το κρέας και το μοίρασε στο λαό κι έφαγαν. Ύστερα ακολούθησε τον Ηλία και έγινε υπηρέτης του.

1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time. 3 And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.

4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.*19.4 for himself: Heb. for his life 5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. 6 And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.*19.6 head: Heb. bolster 7 And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. 8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

9 And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? 10 And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. 11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: 12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. 13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah? 14 And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. 15 And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria: 16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.*19.16 Elisha: Gr. 19 So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him. 20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?*19.20 Go…: Heb. Go return 21 And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
