1 Ο βασιλιάς Σολομών αγάπησε πολλές ξένες γυναίκες, εκτός από την κόρη του Φαραώ: Μωαβίτισσες, Αμμωνίτισσες, Εδωμίτισσες, Σιδώνιες, Χετταίες, 2 γυναίκες από έθνη για τα οποία ο Κύριος είχε πει στους Ισραηλίτες: «Δε θα συγγενέψετε μ’ αυτά τα έθνη κι αυτά δεν πρέπει να συγγενέψουν μ’ εσάς, για να μη σας παρασύρουν στη λατρεία των θεών τους*Βλ. Εξ 34:15-16· Δτ 7:3-4.». Σ’ αυτές όλες τις γυναίκες ο Σολομών αφοσιώθηκε με αγάπη. 3 Είχε εφτακόσιες συζύγους-πριγκίπισσες και τριακόσιες παλλακίδες. Όλες αυτές τον επηρέασαν τόσο, που η καρδιά του έπαψε να είναι αφοσιωμένη στο Θεό. 4 Όταν γέρασε, οι γυναίκες του τού γύρισαν τα μυαλά και λάτρεψε άλλους θεούς· η καρδιά του δεν ήταν αφοσιωμένη στον Κύριο, το Θεό του, όπως η καρδιά του Δαβίδ, του πατέρα του. 5 Λάτρεψε την Αστάρτη, που ήταν θεά των Σιδωνίων και τον Μιλκώμ, το βδέλυγμα των Αμμωνιτών. 6 Έπραξε ό,τι δυσαρεστούσε τον Κύριο και δεν τον ακολούθησε πιστά, όπως ο πατέρας του ο Δαβίδ.

7 Εκείνη την εποχή ο Σολομών καθιέρωσε ιερόν τόπο για τον Χεμώς, το βδέλυγμα της Μωάβ, στο βουνό που βρίσκεται απέναντι από την Ιερουσαλήμ, καθώς και για τον Μιλκώμ,*Μιλκώμ, σύμφωνα με τους στ. 5 και 33. Το εβρ. έχει «Μολόχ». το βδέλυγμα των Αμμωνιτών. 8 Το ίδιο έκανε για όλους τους θεούς των ξένων γυναικών του, για να μπορούν αυτές να θυμιάζουν και να θυσιάζουν στους θεούς τους. 9,10 Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, είχε φανερωθεί δύο φορές στο Σολομώντα*Βλ. κεφ. 3:4-15· 9:1-9. και τον είχε διατάξει ακριβώς αυτό: να μη λατρέψει άλλους θεούς. Ο βασιλιάς όμως ξέχασε τον Κύριο και δεν τήρησε τις εντολές του. Γι’ αυτό κι ο Κύριος οργίστηκε εναντίον του 11 και του είπε:

«Επειδή φέρθηκες μ’ αυτό τον τρόπο και δεν τήρησες τη συμφωνία μου και τους νόμους που εγώ σου είχα ορίσει, θα πάρω εξάπαντος τη βασιλεία από σένα και θα τη δώσω στο δούλο σου. 12 Αλλά δεν θα το κάνω αυτό στις μέρες σου, για χάρη του Δαβίδ, του πατέρα σου. Από τα χέρια του γιου σου θα την πάρω. 13 Ωστόσο δε θα πάρω ολόκληρη τη βασιλεία. Θ’ αφήσω στο γιο σου μία φυλή, για χάρη του Δαβίδ, του δούλου μου, και για χάρη της Ιερουσαλήμ, της εκλεκτής μου πόλης».

14 Τότε ξεσήκωσε ο Κύριος εναντίον του Σολομώντα έναν εχθρό του, έναν Εδωμίτη που λεγόταν Αδάδ, απόγονο του βασιλικού οίκου της Εδώμ. 15,16 Την εποχή που ο Δαβίδ κατέλαβε το βασίλειο της Εδώμ, ο αρχιστράτηγος Ιωάβ είχε πάει με το στρατό κι έμεινε εκεί έξι μήνες, προκειμένου να θάψει τους νεκρούς στρατιώτες των Ισραηλιτών. Τότε σκότωσε και όλα τα αρσενικά της Εδώμ. 17 Από κείνη τη σφαγή γλίτωσε ο νεαρός τότε Αδάδ και μαζί του αρκετοί Εδωμίτες, δούλοι του πατέρα του, οι οποίοι κατέφυγαν στην Αίγυπτο.

18 Έφυγαν όλοι τους από την περιοχή της Μαδιάμ και πήγαν στην έρημο Φαράν· από ’κει πήραν μαζί τους μερικούς άντρες και πήγαν στην Αίγυπτο, στο Φαραώ. Αυτός πρόσφερε στον Αδάδ στέγη και κτήματα και διέταξε να του δοθούν τρόφιμα για τη διατροφή του. 19 Ο νεαρός Αδάδ απέκτησε την εύνοια του Φαραώ, ο οποίος του έδωσε γυναίκα την αδερφή της γυναίκας του, της βασίλισσας Ταχπενές. 20 Η αδερφή της Ταχπενές γέννησε στον Αδάδ γιο, το Γενουβάθ, τον οποίο τον ανέθρεψε η ίδια μέσα στο ανάκτορο του Φαραώ. Εκεί ο Γενουβάθ ζούσε συντροφιά με τους κανονικούς γιους του Φαραώ.

21 Όταν έμαθε ο Αδάδ στην Αίγυπτο ότι πέθανε ο Δαβίδ κι ο αρχιστράτηγος Ιωάβ, είπε στο Φαραώ: «Άφησέ με να γυρίσω στην πατρίδα μου». 22 Ο Φαραώ τον ρώτησε: «Τι σου λείπει κοντά μου και ζητάς να γυρίσεις στην πατρίδα σου;» Αυτός είπε: «Τίποτα. Άφησέ με, όμως, να γυρίσω».

23 Αλλά ο Θεός ξεσήκωσε ενάντια στο Σολομώντα κι άλλον εχθρό: το Ρεζών, γιο του Ελιαδά. Ο Ρεζών είχε δραπετεύσει από τον κύριό του, τον Αδαδέζερ, βασιλιά της Σωβά. 24 Την εποχή που ο Δαβίδ είχε κατατροπώσει το στρατό του Αδεδέζερ, ο Ρεζών συγκέντρωσε γύρω του διάφορους ανθρώπους κι είχε γίνει αρχηγός συμμορίας. Κατέφυγε στη Δαμασκό όπου και εγκαταστάθηκε και κατέληξε να πάρει εκεί την εξουσία στα χέρια του. 25 Ο Ρεζών ήταν, λοιπόν, εχθρός των Ισραηλιτών, όλο το διάστημα της βασιλείας του Σολομώντα. Και ως βασιλιάς των Συρίων έκανε το ίδιο κακό που είχε κάνει και ο Αδάδ: έτρεφε μίσος για τους Ισραηλίτες.

26 Ο Ιεροβοάμ, γιος του Ναβάτ, ήταν ένας Εφραϊμίτης από την περιοχή της Σαρηδά. Η μάνα του ήταν χήρα κι ονομαζόταν Σερουά. Ο ίδιος ήταν στην υπηρεσία του βασιλιά Σολομώντα αλλά επαναστάτησε εναντίον του. 27 Η ιστορία αυτής της εξέγερσης έχει ως εξής:

Ήταν η εποχή που ο Σολομών έχτιζε τη Μιλλώ και έκλεινε το άνοιγμα του τείχους της Πόλης Δαβίδ, του πατέρα του. 28 Ο Ιεροβοάμ ήταν ικανός και δυνατός· ο Σολομών είδε ότι ο νέος αυτός ήταν εργατικός και τον διόρισε επιστάτη στην όλη αναγκαστική εργασία των φυλών Εφραΐμ και Μανασσή.

29 Μια μέρα που ο Ιεροβοάμ έβγαινε από την Ιερουσαλήμ, τον συνάντησε στον δρόμο ο προφήτης Αχιά, ο Σιλωνίτης, φορώντας έναν καινούριο μανδύα. Οι δυο τους ήσαν μόνοι στην εξοχή. 30 Τότε ο Αχιά έβγαλε τον καινούριο μανδύα που φορούσε και τον έσχισε σε δώδεκα κομμάτια. 31 «Πάρε για τον εαυτό σου τα δέκα κομμάτια» είπε στον Ιεροβοάμ, «γιατί ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέει τα εξής: "θα πάρω τη βασιλεία από το Σολομώντα και θα δώσω σ’ εσένα τις δέκα φυλές. 32 Σ’ αυτόν θα μείνει μόνο μία φυλή, κι αυτό για χάρη του δούλου μου, του Δαβίδ, και για χάρη της Ιερουσαλήμ, της πόλης που τη διάλεξα μέσα απ’ όλες τις φυλές του Ισραήλ. 33 Οι Ισραηλίτες με εγκατέλειψαν και προσκύνησαν την Αστάρτη, θεά των Σιδωνίων, τον Χεμώς, θεό των Μωαβιτών, και το Μιλχώμ, το θεό των Αμμωνιτών. Δεν ακολούθησαν το δρόμο που τους είχε υποδείξει, για να κάνουν εκείνο που είναι στα μάτια μου σωστό και να τηρούν τους νόμους μου και τις εντολές μου, όπως ο Δαβίδ, ο πατέρας του Σολομώντα. 34 Ωστόσο δε θα πάρω από το Σολομώντα ολόκληρη τη βασιλεία, αλλά θα τον αφήσω να είναι ηγεμόνας όσο θα ζει, για χάρη του Δαβίδ του εκλεκτού δούλου μου, που τήρησε τις εντολές μου και τους νόμους μου. 35 Θα πάρω, όμως, το βασίλειο, δηλαδή τις δέκα φυλές, από το γιο του και θα το δώσω σ’ εσένα. 36 Στο γιο του θ’ αφήσω μία φυλή, για να υπάρχει πάντα ενώπιόν μου ένας απόγονος του Δαβίδ, του δούλου μου, στην Ιερουσαλήμ, την πόλη που διάλεξα για τον εαυτό μου, για να λατρεύεται το όνομά μου σ’ αυτήν. 37 Κι εσένα, Ιεροβοάμ, θα σε πάρω και θα σε κάνω βασιλιά όπως το επιθυμείς: Θα βασιλέψεις στον Ισραήλ. 38 Κι αν υπακούς σε όλα όσα θα σε διατάζω, αν βαδίζεις στους δρόμους μου, αν κάνεις ό,τι εγώ θεωρώ σωστό, αν τηρείς τους νόμους μου και τις εντολές μου, όπως έκανε ο δούλος μου ο Δαβίδ, τότε εγώ θα είμαι μαζί σου και θα σου χαρίσω σταθερή δυναστεία, όπως έκανα στο Δαβίδ. Θα σου δώσω τον Ισραήλ, 39 για να ταπεινώσω τους απογόνους του Δαβίδ· αλλά αυτό δε θα κρατήσει για πάντα"».

40 Γι’ αυτό ο Σολομών ζητούσε να σκοτώσει τον Ιεροβοάμ, αλλά εκείνος κατέφυγε στην Αίγυπτο, στο Φαραώ Σισάκ. Εκεί έμεινε ωσότου πέθανε ο Σολομών.

41 Η υπόλοιπη ιστορία του Σολομώντα, τα πεπραγμένα της διακυβέρνησής του και η σοφία του, είναι όλα καταχωρισμένα στο βιβλίο των Πράξεων του Σολομώντα. 42 Σαράντα χρόνια βασίλεψε από την Ιερουσαλήμ σ’ ολόκληρο τον Ισραήλ. 43 Όταν πέθανε, τον έθαψαν κοντά στον πατέρα του στην Πόλη Δαβίδ. Στο θρόνο τον διαδέχτηκε ο γιος του ο Ροβοάμ.

9 And the LORD was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice, 10 And had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he kept not that which the LORD commanded. 11 Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.*11.11 is done…: Heb. is with thee 12 Notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it for David thy father’s sake: but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son. 13 Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom; but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servant’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake which I have chosen.

14 And the LORD stirred up an adversary unto Solomon, Hadad the Edomite: he was of the king’s seed in Edom. 15 For it came to pass, when David was in Edom, and Joab the captain of the host was gone up to bury the slain, after he had smitten every male in Edom; 16 (For six months did Joab remain there with all Israel, until he had cut off every male in Edom:) 17 That Hadad fled, he and certain Edomites of his father’s servants with him, to go into Egypt; Hadad being yet a little child. 18 And they arose out of Midian, and came to Paran: and they took men with them out of Paran, and they came to Egypt, unto Pharaoh king of Egypt; which gave him an house, and appointed him victuals, and gave him land. 19 And Hadad found great favour in the sight of Pharaoh, so that he gave him to wife the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen. 20 And the sister of Tahpenes bare him Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh’s house: and Genubath was in Pharaoh’s household among the sons of Pharaoh. 21 And when Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers, and that Joab the captain of the host was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, Let me depart, that I may go to mine own country.*11.21 Let…: Heb. 23 And God stirred him up another adversary, Rezon the son of Eliadah, which fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah: 24 And he gathered men unto him, and became captain over a band, when David slew them of Zobah: and they went to Damascus, and dwelt therein, and reigned in Damascus. 25 And he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, beside the mischief that Hadad did: and he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.

26 And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zereda, Solomon’s servant, whose mother’s name was Zeruah, a widow woman, even he lifted up his hand against the king. 27 And this was the cause that he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breaches of the city of David his father.*11.27 repaired: Heb. closed 28 And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valour: and Solomon seeing the young man that he was industrious, he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph.*11.28 was industrious: Heb. did work*11.28 charge: Heb. burden 29 And it came to pass at that time when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; and he had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field: 30 And Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces: 31 And he said to Jeroboam, Take thee ten pieces: for thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee: 32 (But he shall have one tribe for my servant David’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel:) 33 Because that they have forsaken me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon, and have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in mine eyes, and to keep my statutes and my judgments, as did David his father. 34 Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant’s sake, whom I chose, because he kept my commandments and my statutes: 35 But I will take the kingdom out of his son’s hand, and will give it unto thee, even ten tribes. 36 And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a light alway before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there.*11.36 light: Heb. lamp, or, candle 37 And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth, and shalt be king over Israel. 38 And it shall be, if thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee, and wilt walk in my ways, and do that is right in my sight, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did; that I will be with thee, and build thee a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel unto thee. 39 And I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not for ever. 40 Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam. And Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt, unto Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
