1 Αγγάρεψε, λοιπόν, εβδομήντα χιλιάδες άντρες αχθοφόρους και ογδόντα χιλιάδες εργάτες για να βγάζουν πέτρα από το βουνό και τρεις χιλιάδες εξακόσιους επόπτες.

2 Επίσης ο Σολομών έστειλε μήνυμα στο Χιράμ, βασιλιά της Τύρου: «Όπως έκανες στον πατέρα μου το Δαβίδ και του έστειλες κέδρους για να χτίσει το παλάτι του, το ίδιο κάνε και σ’ εμένα. 3 Εγώ τώρα χτίζω ναό προς τιμήν του Κυρίου, του Θεού μου, και θα τον αφιερώσω σ’ αυτόν. Εκεί θα προσφέρονται ενώπιόν του θυμίαμα αρωματικό, οι άρτοι της προθέσεως που βρίσκονται συνεχώς ενώπιόν του και ολοκαυτώματα το πρωί και το βράδυ, τα Σάββατα, τις νουμηνίες και τις επίσημες εορτές του Κυρίου, του Θεού μας. Αυτό είναι αιώνιο καθήκον των Ισραηλιτών. 4 Ο ναός που θα χτίσω θα είναι μεγάλος, γιατί ο Θεός μας είναι μεγαλύτερος απ’ όλους του θεούς. 5 Αλλά ποιος θα είναι σε θέση να χτίσει σ’ αυτόν ναό, αφού οι ουρανοί και οι ουρανοί των ουρανών δε μπορούν να τον χωρέσουν; Ποιος είμαι εγώ, που θα του χτίσω ναό και θα προσφέρω θυμίαμα ενώπιόν του; 6 Στείλε μου, λοιπόν, έναν ειδικό κατασκευαστή χρυσών, ασημένιων, χάλκινων, και σιδερένιων αντικειμένων· να ξέρει να βάφει το ύφασμα με χρώμα πορφυρό, κόκκινο και θαλασσί και να κατέχει τη χαρακτική τέχνη, για να συνεργαστεί μαζί με τους δικούς μου ειδικούς τεχνίτες στην Ιουδαία και στην Ιερουσαλήμ, τους οποίους είχε προσλάβει ο πατέρας μου ο Δαβίδ. 7 Στείλε μου ακόμα ξύλα κέδρων, κυπαρισσιών και πεύκων από το Λίβανο, γιατί είναι γνωστό ότι οι ξυλουργοί σου εκεί στο Λίβανο ξέρουν να κόβουν δέντρα. Οι τεχνίτες μου θα εργαστούν μαζί με τους δικούς σου τεχνίτες, 8 για να μου ετοιμάσουν ξύλα πολλά, γιατί ο ναός που θα χτίσω θέλω να είναι μεγαλόπρεπος και καταπληκτικός. 9 Εγώ θα δώσω στους δούλους σου, τους ξυλοκόπους, είκοσι χιλιάδες κορ αλεσμένο σιτάρι, είκοσι χιλιάδες κορ κριθάρι, είκοσι χιλιάδες βαθ κρασί και είκοσι χιλιάδες βαθ λάδι».

10 Ο Χιράμ, βασιλιάς της Τύρου, απάντησε με επιστολή που έστειλε στο Σολομώντα: «Επειδή ο Κύριος αγαπάει το λαό του, γι’ αυτό έκανε εσένα βασιλιά σ’ αυτόν. 11 Ευλογημένος ας είναι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, που δημιούργησε τον ουρανό και τη γη και που έδωσε στο βασιλιά Δαβίδ γιο σοφό, προικισμένο με φρόνηση και ευφυία, που θα χτίσει ναό στον Κύριο και παλάτι για τον εαυτό του. 12 Σου στέλνω, λοιπόν, τώρα έναν ειδικό κι επιδέξιο άνθρωπο, τον αρχιτεχνίτη Χουράμ.*Χουράμ. Ή «Χιράμ» κατά το Α΄ Βασ 7:13.40.45.13 Είναι γιος κάποιας από τους απογόνους του Δαν αλλά ο πατέρας του ήταν Τύριος. Αυτός ξέρει να επεξεργάζεται το χρυσό, το χαλκό, το σίδηρο, τις πέτρες, τα ξύλα, το ύφασμα το πορφυρό και το θαλασσί, το λεπτό λινό και το κόκκινο· μπορεί και κάνει κάθε είδους χαράγματα και επινοεί ο,τιδήποτε του ζητηθεί. Θα συνεργαστεί με τους ειδικούς τεχνίτες τους δικούς σου και του κυρίου μου του Δαβίδ, του πατέρα σου. 14 Τώρα, λοιπόν, κύριέ μου, στείλε στους δούλους σου το σιτάρι, το κριθάρι, το λάδι και το κρασί, για τα οποία έκανες λόγο. 15 Κι εμείς θα κόψουμε ξύλα από το Λίβανο για κάθε ανάγκη σου και θα σου τα φέρουμε με σχεδίες από τη θάλασσα μέχρι την Ιόππη, κι από ’κει εσύ θα τα ανεβάσεις στην Ιερουσαλήμ».

16 Ο Σολομών καταμέτρησε όλους τους ξένους άντρες που κατοικούσαν στη χώρα, όπως είχε κάνει κι ο Δαβίδ, ο πατέρας του, και βρέθηκαν εκατόν πενήντα τρεις χιλιάδες εξακόσια άτομα. 17 Από αυτούς, εβδομήντα χιλιάδες τους όρισε να κουβαλούν υλικά, ογδόντα χιλιάδες τους έστειλε στα λατομεία του βουνού και τρεις χιλιάδες εξακόσιους τους διόρισε επόπτες στην εργασία όλων αυτών.*Για την αρίθμηση των στ. βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 1:18.

1 And Solomon determined to build an house for the name of the LORD, and an house for his kingdom. 2 And Solomon told out threescore and ten thousand men to bear burdens, and fourscore thousand to hew in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred to oversee them.

3 And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As thou didst deal with David my father, and didst send him cedars to build him an house to dwell therein, even so deal with me.*2.3 Huram: or, Hiram 4 Behold, I build an house to the name of the LORD my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual shewbread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of the LORD our God. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel.*2.4 sweet…: Heb. incense of spices 5 And the house which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods. 6 But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him?*2.6 is able: Heb. hath retained, or, obtained strength 7 Send me now therefore a man cunning to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, and in iron, and in purple, and crimson, and blue, and that can skill to grave with the cunning men that are with me in Judah and in Jerusalem, whom David my father did provide.*2.7 to grave: Heb. to grave gravings 8 Send me also cedar trees, fir trees, and algum trees, out of Lebanon: for I know that thy servants can skill to cut timber in Lebanon; and, behold, my servants shall be with thy servants,*2.8 algum: also called, almuggim 9 Even to prepare me timber in abundance: for the house which I am about to build shall be wonderful great.*2.9 wonderful…: Heb. great and wonderful 10 And, behold, I will give to thy servants, the hewers that cut timber, twenty thousand measures of beaten wheat, and twenty thousand measures of barley, and twenty thousand baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths of oil.

11 Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing, which he sent to Solomon, Because the LORD hath loved his people, he hath made thee king over them. 12 Huram said moreover, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, that made heaven and earth, who hath given to David the king a wise son, endued with prudence and understanding, that might build an house for the LORD, and an house for his kingdom.*2.12 endued…: Heb. knowing prudence and understanding 13 And now I have sent a cunning man, endued with understanding, of Huram my father’s, 14 The son of a woman of the daughters of Dan, and his father was a man of Tyre, skilful to work in gold, and in silver, in brass, in iron, in stone, and in timber, in purple, in blue, and in fine linen, and in crimson; also to grave any manner of graving, and to find out every device which shall be put to him, with thy cunning men, and with the cunning men of my lord David thy father. 15 Now therefore the wheat, and the barley, the oil, and the wine, which my lord hath spoken of, let him send unto his servants: 16 And we will cut wood out of Lebanon, as much as thou shalt need: and we will bring it to thee in floats by sea to Joppa; and thou shalt carry it up to Jerusalem.*2.16 as much…: Heb according to all thy need*2.16 Joppa: Heb. 17 And Solomon numbered all the strangers that were in the land of Israel, after the numbering wherewith David his father had numbered them; and they were found an hundred and fifty thousand and three thousand and six hundred.*2.17 the strangers: Heb. the men the strangers 18 And he set threescore and ten thousand of them to be bearers of burdens, and fourscore thousand to be hewers in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred overseers to set the people a work.
