1 Ο Αμασίας έγινε βασιλιάς σε ηλικία είκοσι πέντε ετών και βασίλεψε είκοσι εννέα χρόνια στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Η μητέρα του ονομαζόταν Ιεωαδδάν και καταγόταν από την Ιερουσαλήμ. 2 Ο Αμασίας έκανε το σωστό ενώπιον του Κυρίου, όχι όμως με καρδιά ειλικρινή. 3 Αμέσως μόλις σταθεροποιήθηκε η βασιλεία του, θανάτωσε τους αξιωματούχους του που είχαν σκοτώσει το βασιλιά Ιωάς, τον πατέρα του.*Βλ. κεφ. 24:25-26.4 Δε θανάτωσε όμως και τα παιδιά τους, εφαρμόζοντας αυτό που είναι γραμμένο στο βιβλίο του νόμου του Μωυσή, όπου ο Κύριος διέταξε: «Δεν πρέπει να τιμωρούνται με θάνατο οι γονείς για τις αμαρτίες των παιδιών τους, ούτε τα παιδιά για τις αμαρτίες των γονιών τους. Ο καθένας θα τιμωρείται με θάνατο μόνο για τη δική του αμαρτία».

5 Ο Αμασίας συγκέντρωσε το λαό του Ιούδα και της φυλής Βενιαμίν και διόρισε σ’ αυτούς κατά συγγένειες χιλίαρχους και εκατόνταρχους. Τους στρατολόγησε από είκοσι ετών και πάνω και τους βρήκε τριακόσιες χιλιάδες στρατεύσιμους, ικανούς να χειρίζονται το ακόντιο και την ασπίδα. 6 Επί πλέον μίσθωσε από το βασίλειο του Ισραήλ, για εκατό τάλαντα ασήμι, εκατό χιλιάδες γενναίους πολεμιστές.

7 Ήρθε όμως σ’ αυτόν ένας άνθρωπος του Θεού και του είπε: «Βασιλιά, ας μην έρθει μαζί σου ο στρατός του βασιλείου του Ισραήλ, γιατί ο Κύριος δεν είναι ούτε με τον Ισραήλ ούτε με κανέναν από τους Εφραϊμίτες. 8 Αν θέλεις να πας, πήγαινε και κάνε και τις προετοιμασίες σου για τον πόλεμο· ο Θεός όμως θα σε τρέψει σε φυγή μπροστά από τους εχθρούς σου, γιατί μόνον αυτός έχει τη δύναμη να χαρίζει τη νίκη ή να φέρνει την ήττα». 9 Ο Αμασίας απάντησε στον άνθρωπο του Θεού: «Τι θα κάνουμε όμως με τα εκατό τάλαντα, που τα ’χω δώσει κιόλας στο στρατό του Ισραήλ;» Ο άνθρωπος του Θεού απάντησε: «Ο Κύριος είναι δυνατός να σου δώσει περισσότερα απ’ αυτά». 10 Τότε ο Αμασίας ξεχώρισε το στρατό που είχε έρθει σ’ αυτόν από τη φυλή Εφραΐμ και τους έστειλε πίσω στον τόπο τους. Αυτοί θύμωσαν εναντίον του λαού του Ιούδα κι επέστρεψαν στον τόπο τους φοβερά οργισμένοι.

11 Ο Αμασίας όμως πήρε θάρρος και έφτασε επικεφαλής του στρατού του στην κοιλάδα του Άλατος,*κοιλάδα του Άλατος. Βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Σαμ 8:13. όπου σκότωσε δέκα χιλιάδες Εδωμίτες. 12 Ο στρατός του Ιούδα συνέλαβε ακόμα δέκα χιλιάδες αιχμαλώτους και τους έφεραν στην άκρη του γκρεμού, απ’ όπου και τους γκρέμισαν και τσακίστηκαν όλοι.

13 Οι στρατιώτες του Ισραήλ που ο Αμασίας τους έστειλε πίσω, γιατί δεν τους ήθελε να πολεμήσουν μαζί του, επιτεθήκαν στις πόλεις του Ιούδα, από τη Σαμάρεια μέχρι τη Βαιθ-Χωρών· σκότωσαν τρεις χιλιάδες από τους κατοίκους της και πήραν πολλά λάφυρα.

14 Όταν ο Αμασίας γύρισε από τη σφαγή των Εδωμιτών, έφερε μαζί του και τους θεούς αυτών των ανθρώπων· τους έστησε για θεούς του, τους προσκύνησε και θυσίασε σ’ αυτούς. 15 Η ενέργεια όμως αυτή άναψε το θυμό του Κυρίου εναντίον του Αμασία. Και έστειλε σ’ αυτόν έναν προφήτη, ο οποίος του είπε: «Γιατί στράφηκες προς τους θεούς του λαού εκείνου, αφού αυτοί δεν μπόρεσαν να γλιτώσουν το λαό τους όταν εσύ τους κατέστρεφες;» 16 Ενώ μιλούσε ο προφήτης, ο βασιλιάς τού είπε: «Σύμβουλο σε κάναμε του βασιλιά; Πάψε γιατί θα πεθάνεις». Τότε ο προφήτης έπαψε, αλλά είπε: «Ξέρω ότι ο Θεός αποφάσισε να σε καταστρέψει, γι’ αυτό που έκανες και δεν άκουσες τη συμβουλή μου».

17 Ο Αμασίας, βασιλιάς του Ιούδα, συμβουλεύτηκε τους αυλικούς του κι έστειλε αγγελιοφόρους στο βασιλιά του Ισραήλ Ιωάς, γιο του Ιωάχαζ και εγγονό του Ιηού, και του έλεγε: «Έλα ν’ αναμετρηθούμε!» 18 Αλλά ο Ιωάς απάντησε στον Αμασία: «Το αγκάθι που ήταν στο Λίβανο παράγγειλε στον κέδρο του Λιβάνου: "δώσε τη θυγατέρα σου γυναίκα στο γιο μου". Αλλά ένα άγριο ζώο του Λιβάνου πέρασε και καταπάτησε το αγκάθι.*Σχετικά με τη φανταστική αυτή ιστορία βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Βασ 14:9.19 Εσύ τώρα όλο σκέφτεσαι ότι σύντριψες τους Εδωμίτες κι αυτό σε κάνει να περηφανεύεσαι και να θέλεις ν’ αποχτήσεις δόξα. Κάτσε εκεί που είσαι. Γιατί θες να προκαλέσεις συμφορά; Γιατί να σκοτωθείς εσύ και μαζί σου να ταλαιπωρηθεί κι ο λαός του Ιούδα;» 20 Αλλά ο Αμασίας δεν άκουγε τίποτα. Κι ήταν αυτό από το Θεό, για να τους κάνει να νικηθούν από τους εχθρούς, επειδή λάτρεψαν τους θεούς των Εδωμιτών.

21 Έτσι ο Ιωάς, βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ, πήγε κι αναμετρήθηκε με τον Αμασία, βασιλιά του Ιούδα, στη Βαιθ-Σεμές, πόλη που ανήκει στο βασίλειο του Ιούδα. 22 Ο στρατός του Ιούδα νικήθηκε από αυτόν του Ισραήλ και οι στρατιώτες έφυγαν καθένας για το σπίτι του. 23 Ο Ιωάς έπιασε αιχμάλωτο τον Αμασία στη Βαιθ-Σεμές και τον έφερε στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Εκεί γκρέμισε το τείχος της πόλης από την πύλη του Εφραΐμ ως την πύλη της Γωνίας, σε μάκρος περίπου τετρακοσίων πηχών.*Βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Βασ 14:13.24 Πήρε όλο το χρυσάφι και το ασήμι από το ναό του Θεού, πήρε τα σκεύη που βρέθηκαν εκεί υπό τη φύλαξη του Ωβήδ-Εδώμ, κι επίσης τους θησαυρούς του παλατιού του βασιλιά, καθώς και αιχμαλώτους, και γύρισε στη Σαμάρεια.

25 Μετά το θάνατο του Ιωάς, γιου του Ιωάχαζ και βασιλιά του Ισραήλ, ο Αμασίας, γιος του Ιωάς και βασιλιάς του Ιούδα, έζησε δεκαπέντε χρόνια. 26 Η υπόλοιπη ιστορία του Αμασία, από την αρχή ως το τέλος είναι καταχωρισμένη στο Βιβλίο των Χρονικών των βασιλιάδων του Ιούδα και του Ισραήλ. 27 Μετά από τότε που ο Αμασίας εγκατέλειψε τον Κύριο, εκδηλώθηκε συνωμοσία εναντίον του στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Αυτός κατέφυγε στη Λαχίς· οι εχθροί του όμως τον καταδίωξαν ως εκεί και τον σκότωσαν. 28 Μετέφεραν τη σορό του στην πρωτεύουσα του βασιλείου του πάνω σε άμαξα που την έσερναν πολλά άλογα και τον έθαψαν μαζί με τους προγόνους του.

1 Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.

5 Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield. 6 He hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for an hundred talents of silver. 7 But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the LORD is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim. 8 But if thou wilt go, do it, be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down. 9 And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? 11 And Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand. 12 And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.

13 But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-horon, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil.*25.13 the soldiers…: Heb. the sons of the band

14 Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them. 15 Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand? 16 And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king’s counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.*25.16 determined: Heb. counselled
