1 Τον έβδομο χρόνο ο ιερέας Ιεωϊαδά είχε αποκτήσει δύναμη. Πήρε, λοιπόν, κατά μέρος τους εκατόνταρχους, Αζαρία γιο του Ιωράμ, Ισμαήλ γιο του Ιωχανάν, Αζαρία γιο του Ωβήδ, Μαασεΐα, γιο του Αδαΐα και Ελισαφάτ, γιο του Ζαχαρία και έκανε μαζί τους συμφωνία. 2 Αυτοί περιόδευσαν το βασίλειο του Ιούδα και συγκέντρωσαν απ’ όλες τις πόλεις τούς λευίτες και τους αρχηγούς των συγγενειών του Ισραήλ, και ήρθαν στην Ιερουσαλήμ. 3 Συγκεντρώθηκαν όλοι στο ναό του Θεού κι έκαναν συμφωνία υποταγής στο βασιλιά. Ο Ιεωϊαδά τους είπε: «Αυτός είναι ο γιος του βασιλιά. Αυτός πρέπει να βασιλέψει, σύμφωνα με την υπόσχεση του Κυρίου για τους απογόνους του Δαβίδ. 4 Να, λοιπόν, τι θα κάνετε: Όταν οι ιερείς και οι λευίτες θα αναλάβετε υπηρεσία το επόμενο Σάββατο, το ένα τρίτο από σας θα φυλάξει τις πύλες του ναού· 5 το άλλο τρίτο θα φυλάξει το παλάτι του βασιλιά και το υπόλοιπο τρίτο την πύλη Ιεσώδ.*πύλη Ιεσώδ. Ή: «πύλη του Θεμελίου». Η θέση αυτής της πύλης είναι άγνωστη. (Πρβλ. Β΄ Βασ 11:6). Όλος ο λαός θα συγκεντρωθεί στις αυλές του ναού του Κυρίου. 6 Κανείς άλλος όμως δε θα μπει στο ναό του Κυρίου, παρά μόνο οι ιερείς και όσοι από τους λευίτες έχουν υπηρεσία. Αυτοί μπορούν να μπαίνουν γιατί είναι καθιερωμένοι· όλος όμως ο άλλος λαός θα φυλάει την εντολή του Κυρίου και θα μένει απ’ έξω. 7 Οι λευίτες θα περικυκλώσουν τον βασιλιά, καθένας με τα όπλα τους στα χέρια, και θα τον συνοδεύουν όπου κι αν πάει. Οποιοσδήποτε άλλος, όμως, προσπαθήσει να μπει στο ναό, θα θανατώνεται».

8 Οι λευίτες και όλος ο λαός του Ιούδα έκαναν όπως ακριβώς τους διέταξε ο ιερέας Ιεωϊαδά. Συγκέντρωσε καθένας τους άντρες του, όσους επρόκειτο ν’ αρχίσουν υπηρεσία εκείνο το Σάββατο και όσους επρόκειτο να παραδώσουν υπηρεσία το ίδιο Σάββατο –ο Ιεωϊαδά δεν είχε απαλλάξει κανένα τμήμα. 9 Ο Ιεωϊαδά έδωσε στους εκατόνταρχους τις λόγχες, τις μεγάλες και τις μικρές ασπίδες, που ανήκαν στο βασιλιά Δαβίδ και βρίσκονταν στο ναό του Θεού. 10 Τοποθέτησε όλους τους άντρες, τον καθένα με το όπλο του στο χέρι, σε ημικύκλιο που ξεκινούσε, από τη δεξιά πλευρά του ναού, περνούσε από το θυσιαστήριο και κατέληγε στην αριστερή πλευρά του ναού, για να προστατεύσουν το βασιλιά. 11 Τότε ο Ιεωϊαδά και οι γιοι του έφεραν έξω το γιο του βασιλιά, του φόρεσαν το στέμμα, του έδωσαν το έγγραφο της διαθήκης*το έγγραφο της διαθήκης. Βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Βασ 11:12. και τον ανακήρυξαν βασιλιά. Τον έχρισαν με λάδι και όλοι φώναζαν: «Ζήτω ο βασιλιάς!»

12 Όταν άκουσε η Γοθολία το θόρυβο του λαού, που έτρεχε και εξυμνούσε το βασιλιά, ανακατεύτηκε με το πλήθος και ήρθε στο ναό του Κυρίου. 13 Εκεί είδε το νεαρό βασιλιά να στέκεται πλάι στο στύλο στην είσοδο του ναού. Γύρω του στέκονταν οι αξιωματικοί και οι σαλπιγκτές, κι όλος ο λαός της χώρας πανηγύριζε και σάλπιζε με σάλπιγγες, ενώ οι ψάλτες με τα μουσικά όργανα κατεύθυναν τους ύμνους. Τότε η Γοθολία έσκισε τα φορέματά της*έσκισε τα φορέματά της. Βλ. υποσ. εις Γεν 37:29. και φώναξε: «Προδοσία! Προδοσία!» 14 Ο ιερέας Ιεωϊαδά έβγαλε έξω τους εκατόνταρχους, που ήταν αρχηγοί του στρατού, και τους είπε: «Βγάλτε την έξω από τις γραμμές του στρατού, και όποιος την ακολουθήσει να θανατώνεται με ξίφος». Ο ιερέας είχε προστάξει να μη τη σκοτώσουν μέσα στο ναό του Κυρίου. 15 Τη συνέλαβαν, λοιπόν, τη στιγμή που έφτανε στην είσοδο της πύλης των Αλόγων,*πύλης των Αλόγων. Βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Βασ. 11:16. που οδηγεί στο παλάτι του βασιλιά, και τη θανάτωσαν επί τόπου.

16 Ο Ιεωϊαδά έκανε συμφωνία που δέσμευε το λαό, το βασιλιά και τον εαυτό του ότι θα είναι λαός του Κυρίου. 17 Τότε το πλήθος κατευθύνθηκε στο ναό του Βάαλ και τον γκρέμισαν· κατέστρεψαν τα θυσιαστήριά του και τα είδωλά του και θανάτωσαν τον Ματθάν, ιερέα του Βάαλ, εκεί μπροστά στα θυσιαστήρια.

18 Έπειτα ο Ιεωϊαδά διόρισε φρουρούς στο ναό του Κυρίου υπό την εξουσία των ιερέων-λευιτών. Αυτούς τους είχε διορίσει κατά ομάδες ο Δαβίδ, για να προσφέρουν τα ολοκαυτώματα στο ναό, όπως αναφέρεται στο νόμο του Μωυσή· ο Δαβίδ είχε ορίσει αυτή η υπηρεσία να γίνεται με χαρούμενες ωδές. 19 Επίσης τοποθέτησε θυρωρούς στις πύλες του ναού του Κυρίου, για να μη μπαίνει σ’ αυτόν κανένας ακάθαρτος.

20 Έπειτα συγκέντρωσε τους εκατόνταρχους, τους πρόκριτους και τους άρχοντες μαζί με όλο το λαό της χώρας και παρέλαβαν το βασιλιά από το ναό του Κυρίου, πέρασαν από την άνω πύλη και ήρθαν στ’ ανάκτορα, όπου και ενθρόνισαν τον Ιωάς 21 με χαρούμενους πανηγυρισμούς.

Έτσι ησύχασε η πόλη, αφού η Γοθολία είχε θανατωθεί.

1 And in the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself, and took the captains of hundreds, Azariah the son of Jeroham, and Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, and Azariah the son of Obed, and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, into covenant with him. 2 And they went about in Judah, and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah, and the chief of the fathers of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem. 3 And all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said unto them, Behold, the king’s son shall reign, as the LORD hath said of the sons of David. 4 This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you entering on the sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, shall be porters of the doors;*23.4 doors: Heb. thresholds 5 And a third part shall be at the king’s house; and a third part at the gate of the foundation: and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the LORD. 6 But let none come into the house of the LORD, save the priests, and they that minister of the Levites; they shall go in, for they are holy: but all the people shall keep the watch of the LORD. 7 And the Levites shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand; and whosoever else cometh into the house, he shall be put to death: but be ye with the king when he cometh in, and when he goeth out. 8 So the Levites and all Judah did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest had commanded, and took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that were to go out on the sabbath: for Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses. 9 Moreover Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds spears, and bucklers, and shields, that had been king David’s, which were in the house of God. 10 And he set all the people, every man having his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the temple to the left side of the temple, along by the altar and the temple, by the king round about.*23.10 side: Heb. shoulder*23.10 temple: Heb. house 11 Then they brought out the king’s son, and put upon him the crown, and gave him the testimony, and made him king. 12 Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people into the house of the LORD: 13 And she looked, and, behold, the king stood at his pillar at the entering in, and the princes and the trumpets by the king: and all the people of the land rejoiced, and sounded with trumpets, also the singers with instruments of musick, and such as taught to sing praise. Then Athaliah rent her clothes, and said, Treason, Treason.*23.13 Treason: Heb. Conspiracy 14 Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth of the ranges: and whoso followeth her, let him be slain with the sword. For the priest said, Slay her not in the house of the LORD. 15 So they laid hands on her; and when she was come to the entering of the horse gate by the king’s house, they slew her there.

16 And Jehoiada made a covenant between him, and between all the people, and between the king, that they should be the LORD’s people. 17 Then all the people went to the house of Baal, and brake it down, and brake his altars and his images in pieces, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. 18 Also Jehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the LORD by the hand of the priests the Levites, whom David had distributed in the house of the LORD, to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, as it was ordained by David.*23.18 as it was…: Heb. by the hands of David 19 And he set the porters at the gates of the house of the LORD, that none which was unclean in any thing should enter in. 20 And he took the captains of hundreds, and the nobles, and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king from the house of the LORD: and they came through the high gate into the king’s house, and set the king upon the throne of the kingdom. 21 And all the people of the land rejoiced: and the city was quiet, after that they had slain Athaliah with the sword.
