1 Ο Ουζζίας,*Ουζζίας. Στα παράλληλα κείμενα του Β΄ Βασ αναφέρεται ως Αζαρίας. γιος του Αμασία, ήταν τότε δεκαέξι ετών κι ο λαός του Ιούδα έκανε αυτόν βασιλιά στη θέση του πατέρα του. 2 Αυτός, μετά το θάνατο του πατέρα του, ανέκτησε υπέρ του Ιούδα την πόλη Ελάθ και την ανοικοδόμησε.

3 Ο Ουζζίας έγινε βασιλιάς σε ηλικία δεκαέξι ετών και βασίλεψε πενήντα δύο χρόνια στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Η μητέρα του ονομαζόταν Ιεχαλία και καταγόταν από την Ιερουσαλήμ. 4 Ο Ουζζίας έπραξε το σωστό ενώπιον του Κυρίου, όπως ακριβώς είχε κάνει κι ο Αμασίας, ο πατέρας του. 5 Έκανε το θέλημα του Θεού όσο ζούσε ο Ζαχαρίας που τον συμβούλευε να σέβεται το Θεό. Κι όσον καιρό έκανε το θέλημα του Κυρίου, ο Θεός τού χάριζε επιτυχίες.

6 Ο Ουζζίας έκανε πόλεμο εναντίον των Φιλισταίων. Γκρέμισε τα τείχη της Γαθ, της Ιαυνί και της Ασδώδ κι οχύρωσε πόλεις γύρω από την Ασδώδ και την υπόλοιπη χώρα των Φιλισταίων. 7 Ο Θεός τον βοήθησε να νικήσει τους Φιλισταίους και τους Άραβες που κατοικούσαν στη Γουρ-Βαάλ, καθώς και τους Μιναίους,*Μιναίους. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 20:1.8 οι οποίοι έγιναν φόρου υποτελείς στον Ουζζία. Η φήμη του έφτασε μέχρι την Αίγυπτο, καθώς γινόταν όλο και πιο δυνατός.

9 Ο Ουζζίας έχτισε γωνιακούς πύργους στην Ιερουσαλήμ, σε κάθε γωνία του τείχους της, στην πύλη της Γωνίας και στην πύλη της Κοιλάδας και τους οχύρωσε.*πύλη της Γωνίας. Για την πύλη της Γωνίας βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Βασ 14:13. – Η πύλη της Κοιλάδας βρισκόταν στο δυτικό τείχος της πόλης.10 Επίσης έχτισε πύργους στις έρημες περιοχές και άνοιξε πολλά πηγάδια, γιατί είχε πολλά κοπάδια στις πεδινές και στις λοφώδεις περιοχές. Επίσης είχε προσλάβει γεωργούς και αμπελουργούς στα βουνά και στις εύφορες περιοχές, γιατί αγαπούσε τη γεωργία.

11 Ο Ουζζίας είχε στρατό ετοιμοπόλεμο, που έκανε οργανωμένες επιδρομές. Ήταν χωρισμένος σε τάγματα, όπως τους είχε απογράψει ο γραμματέας Ιεϊήλ και ο διοικητικός υπάλληλος Μαασεΐας, με την καθοδήγηση του Ανανία, ενός από τους στρατηγούς του βασιλιά. 12 Όλοι αυτοί οι γενναίοι πολεμιστές, που υπάγονταν στις διαταγές δύο χιλιάδων εξακοσίων αρχηγών οικογενειών, 13 αποτελούσαν μια στρατιωτική δύναμη τριακοσίων εφτά χιλιάδων πεντακοσίων αντρών, δυνατών και θαρραλέων, οι οποίοι υποστήριζαν το βασιλιά εναντίον των εχθρών του. 14 Ο Ουζζίας εφοδίασε όλο το στρατό με ασπίδες, ακόντια, περικεφαλαίες, θώρακες, τόξα και πέτρες για σφενδόνες. 15 Στην Ιερουσαλήμ κατασκεύασε μηχανές επινοημένες από ειδικούς, για να τοποθετούνται πάνω στους πύργους και στις γωνίες, και να ρίχνουν βέλη και πέτρες μεγάλες.

Η φήμη του βασιλιά Ουζζία είχε εξαπλωθεί παντού, γιατί ο Θεός τον βοηθούσε με θαυμαστό τρόπο, κι απέκτησε μεγάλη δύναμη.

16 Όταν όμως έγινε ισχυρός, υπερηφανεύθηκε κι αυτό ήταν η καταστροφή του. Έδειξε ασέβεια στον Κύριο το Θεό του: Μια μέρα μπήκε στο ναό του Κυρίου, για να προσφέρει ο ίδιος εύοσμο θυμίαμα στο θυσιαστήριο του θυμιάματος. 17 Ο αρχιερέας Αζαρίας πήρε από πίσω το βασιλιά μαζί με ογδόντα θαρραλέους ιερείς του Κυρίου, 18 οι οποίοι αντιστέκονταν στο βασιλιά και του έλεγαν: «Δεν επιτρέπεται, Ουζζία, να προσφέρεις εσύ θυμίαμα στον Κύριο! Μόνον οι ιερείς επιτρέπεται, οι απόγονοι του Ααρών, που είναι αφιερωμένοι σ’ αυτή την υπηρεσία. Βγες έξω από το αγιαστήριο! Ασέβησες στον Κύριο το Θεό και δεν θα έχεις πια την ευλογία του». 19 Ο Ουζζίας, κρατώντας στο χέρι του το θυμιατήριο, έτοιμος να θυμιάσει, οργίστηκε εναντίον των ιερέων, κι αμέσως εμφανίστηκε λέπρα στο μέτωπό του εκεί μπροστά τους, μέσα στο ναό του Κυρίου, κοντά στο θυσιαστήριο του θυμιάματος. 20 Ο αρχιερέας Αζαρίας και όλοι οι ιερείς, που τον κοίταζαν, είδαν τη λέπρα στο μέτωπό του. Έτρεξαν τότε να τον βγάλουν από το ναό· έτρεξε κι εκείνος, γιατί τον είχε χτυπήσει ο Κύριος.

21 Ο βασιλιάς Ουζζίας έμεινε λεπρός ως το θάνατό του. Ήταν αναγκασμένος να κάθεται σε απομόνωση, αποκλεισμένος από το ναό του Κυρίου. Ο γιος του, ο Ιωάθαμ, ήταν επικεφαλής του ανακτόρου και κυβερνούσε το λαό της χώρας.

22 Η υπόλοιπη ιστορία του Ουζζία, από την αρχή ως το τέλος, είναι γραμμένη από τον προφήτη Ησαΐα, γιο του Αμώς. 23 Έτσι ο Ουζζίας πέθανε αλλά δεν τον έθαψαν με τους προγόνους του στο βασιλικό νεκροταφείο, αλλά σε παραπλήσιο μέρος, επειδή ήταν λεπρός. Στο θρόνο τον διαδέχτηκε ο γιος του ο Ιωθάμ.

16 But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense. 17 And Azariah the priest went in after him, and with him fourscore priests of the LORD, that were valiant men: 18 And they withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast trespassed; neither shall it be for thine honour from the LORD God. 19 Then Uzziah was wroth, and had a censer in his hand to burn incense: and while he was wroth with the priests, the leprosy even rose up in his forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, from beside the incense altar. 20 And Azariah the chief priest, and all the priests, looked upon him, and, behold, he was leprous in his forehead, and they thrust him out from thence; yea, himself hasted also to go out, because the LORD had smitten him. 21 And Uzziah the king was a leper unto the day of his death, and dwelt in a several house, being a leper; for he was cut off from the house of the LORD: and Jotham his son was over the king’s house, judging the people of the land.*26.21 several: Heb. free

22 Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, first and last, did Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, write. 23 So Uzziah slept with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the field of the burial which belonged to the kings; for they said, He is a leper: and Jotham his son reigned in his stead.
