1 Μετά απ’ αυτά, οι Μωαβίτες και οι Αμμωνίτες και μαζί τους μερικοί από τους Μιναίους*Μιναίους, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβραϊκό έχει «Αμμωνίτες». Οι Μιναίοι ήταν λαός εγκατεστημένος πιθανώς νότια της Εδώμ. ξεκίνησαν να πολεμήσουν εναντίον του Ιωσαφάτ. 2 Έφεραν λοιπόν στο βασιλιά το μήνυμα: «Έρχεται εναντίον σου πολυάριθμος στρατός», του είπαν, «πέρα από τη Νεκρά Θάλασσα, από τη χώρα των Εδωμιτών.*των Εδωμιτών, σύμφωνα με ένα εβρ. χειρ., μία αρχ. λατινική μετ. και τα γεωγραφικά συμφραζόμενα του στίχου. Το εβρ. έχει «των Συρίων». Τώρα αυτοί βρίσκονται στην Χασεσών-Ταμάρ, δηλαδή στην Εν-Γεδί».

3 Ο Ιωσαφάτ φοβήθηκε. Άρχισε να προσεύχεται στον Κύριο και κήρυξε νηστεία σ’ όλο το λαό του Ιούδα. 4 Οι κάτοικοι του Ιούδα ήρθαν απ’ όλες τις πόλεις του βασιλείου στην Ιερουσαλήμ, για να συμβουλευτούν τον Κύριο. 5 Τότε ο Ιωσαφάτ στάθηκε στο μέσο της συγκέντρωσης του λαού του Ιούδα και της Ιερουσαλήμ, στο ναό του Κυρίου, μπροστά στη νέα αυλή, 6 κι έκανε αυτήν την προσευχή:

«Κύριε, Θεέ των προγόνων μας, εσύ είσαι που βασιλεύεις στους ουρανούς, και κυριαρχείς πάνω σε όλα τα βασίλεια των εθνών! Στα χέρια σου είναι η δύναμη και η εξουσία. Κανένας δεν μπορεί να σου αντισταθεί. 7 Εσύ, Θεέ μας, έδιωξες τους κατοίκους της χώρας αυτής μπροστά από το λαό σου τον Ισραήλ και την έδωσες για πάντα στους απογόνους του Αβραάμ, του αγαπημένου σου. 8 Αυτοί εγκαταστάθηκαν στη χώρα κι έχτισαν ένα αγιαστήριο προς τιμήν σου. Και είπαν: 9 "αν μας βρει κανένα κακό, πόλεμος, θεομηνία, πλημμύρα, θανατικό ή πείνα, θα σταθούμε μπροστά σ’ αυτό το ναό, δηλαδή ενώπιόν σου, αφού εσύ λατρεύεσαι σ’ αυτόν, και θα σε επικαλεστούμε μέσα στη θλίψη μας κι εσύ θα μας ακούσεις και θα μας σώσεις". 10 Τώρα, λοιπόν, δες τους Αμμωνίτες, τους Μωαβίτες και τους Εδωμίτες! Όταν οι Ισραηλίτες βγήκαν από την Αίγυπτο δεν τους άφησες να περάσουν μέσα από τα εδάφη τους, αλλά πέρασαν από μακριά τους και δεν τους κατέστρεψαν. 11 Κι αυτοί εδώ τώρα μας ανταμείβουν με το να έρχονται να μας διώξουν από την κληρονομία σου, που μας την έδωσες για ιδιοκτησία μας. 12 Θεέ μας, δε θα τους τιμωρήσεις; Εμείς δεν έχουμε δύναμη ν’ αντισταθούμε σ’ αυτό το μεγάλο πλήθος, που έρχεται εναντίον μας. Δεν ξέρουμε τι να κάνουμε, αλλά τα μάτια μας είναι στραμμένα σ’ εσένα».

13 Όλοι οι κάτοικοι του Ιούδα στέκονταν ενώπιον του Κυρίου με τις γυναίκες τους και τα παιδιά τους. 14 Τότε, εκεί μέσα στη συγκέντρωση, ήρθε το Πνεύμα του Κυρίου στον Ιαχαζιήλ, έναν λευίτη, απόγονο του Ασάφ. (Ήταν γιος του Ζαχαρία γιου του Βεναΐα, γιου του Ιεϊήλ, γιου του Ματθανία). 15 Αυτός είπε: «Προσέξτε όλος ο λαός του Ιούδα, εσείς οι κάτοικοι της Ιερουσαλήμ, κι εσύ βασιλιά Ιωσαφάτ! Αυτά λέει σ’ εσάς ο Κύριος: "μη φοβάστε, μη δειλιάζετε από το μεγάλο αυτό πλήθος, γιατί η μάχη δεν είναι δική σας, αλλά του Θεού. 16 Αύριο θα τους επιτεθείτε. Αυτοί έρχονται από την ανωφέρεια Σις. Θα τους συναντήσετε στην άκρη της κοιλάδας, απέναντι από την έρημο Ιερουήλ. 17 Εσείς δεν θα χρειαστεί να πολεμήσετε. Εμφανιστείτε, σταθείτε εκεί και θα δείτε ότι εγώ, ο Κύριος, που είμαι μαζί σας, θα τους νικήσω για λογαριασμό σας. Λαέ του Ιούδα και της Ιερουσαλήμ, μη φοβάστε, μη δειλιάζετε! Αύριο κινηθείτε εναντίον τους, κι ο Κύριος θα είναι μαζί σας"».

18 Έπειτα ο Ιωσαφάτ έσκυψε το πρόσωπό του στη γη και όλος ο λαός του Ιούδα και της Ιερουσαλήμ έπεσαν ενώπιον του Κυρίου και τον προσκύνησαν. 19 Οι λευΐτες των συγγενειών του Κορέ και του Καάθ σηκώθηκαν και υμνολογούσαν με δυνατή φωνή τον Κύριο, το Θεό του Ισραήλ.

20 Την άλλη μέρα σηκώθηκαν πολύ πρωί και βγήκαν στην έρημο Τεκωά. Καθώς έβγαιναν, ο Ιωσαφάτ στάθηκε και είπε: «Ακούστε με, άντρες του Ιούδα και της Ιερουσαλήμ: Εμπιστευτείτε τον Κύριο το Θεό σας και θα είστε ασφαλείς. Πιστέψτε στους προφήτες του και θα νικήσετε». 21 Έπειτα, αφού συσκέφθηκε με το λαό, τοποθέτησε μπροστά από τους πολεμιστές ψάλτες με ιερή στολή για να υμνολογούν τον Κύριο, με τον ύμνο: «Δοξολογείτε τον Κύριο, γιατί αιώνια διαρκεί η αγάπη του».

22 Όταν άρχισαν αυτόν τον ύμνο της δοξολογίας, ο Κύριος έστησε ενέδρες εναντίον των Αμμωνιτών, των Μωαβιτών και των Εδωμιτών, που είχαν έρθει να πολεμήσουν τον Ιούδα, και χτυπήθηκαν. 23 Οι Αμμωνίτες και οι Μωαβίτες επιτεθήκαν στους Εδωμίτες, με σκοπό να τους εξολοθρεύσουν και να τους καταστρέψουν εντελώς. Όταν όμως τελείωσαν με τους Εδωμίτες, συγκρούστηκαν μεταξύ τους και αλληλοεξοντώνονταν. 24 Όταν οι άντρες του Ιούδα ήρθαν στη σκοπιά της ερήμου και κοίταξαν προς το πλήθος των εχθρών, είδαν ότι όλοι ήταν νεκρά σώματα, πεσμένα στη γη. Δεν είχε γλιτώσει κανείς. 25 Ο Ιωσαφάτ και ο λαός του ήρθαν να λαφυραγωγήσουν το στρατόπεδο των εχθρών και βρήκαν πάμπολλα κτήνη,*Το εβρ. εδώ προσθέτει «κάτω απ’ αυτά» δηλαδή από τα νεκρά σώματα. πλούτη, ρουχισμό*ρουχισμό, σύμφωνα με μερικά αρχαία χειρ. και τη Βουλγάτα. και πολύτιμα αντικείμενα, από τα οποία πήραν τόσα πολλά, ώστε δεν μπορούσαν να τα μεταφέρουν. Τρεις μέρες μάζευαν λάφυρα. Τόσα πολλά ήταν.

26 Την τέταρτη μέρα συγκεντρώθηκαν στην κοιλάδα Βεραχά κι εκεί ευλόγησαν τον Κύριο. Γι’ αυτό και ονόμασαν τον τόπο εκείνο «Κοιλάδα Βεραχά» (Κοιλάδα Ευλογίας), κι έτσι ονομάζεται μέχρι σήμερα. 27 Μετά όλοι οι κάτοικοι της Ιερουσαλήμ και του Ιούδα, με αρχηγό τον Ιωσαφάτ, ξεκίνησαν για να γυρίσουν στην Ιερουσαλήμ με μεγάλη χαρά. Ο Κύριος τους είχε κάνει να χαρούν, γιατί νικήθηκαν οι εχθροί τους. 28 Ήρθαν στην Ιερουσαλήμ, στο ναό του Κυρίου, με άρπες, με κιθάρες και με σάλπιγγες. 29 Όταν τα άλλα βασίλεια πληροφορήθηκαν ότι ο Κύριος πολέμησε εναντίον των εχθρών του Ισραήλ, κυριεύτηκαν από το φόβο του. 30 Έτσι η βασιλεία του Ιωσαφάτ έμεινε ήσυχη, γιατί ο Θεός τού εξασφάλισε ειρήνη από παντού.

31 Ο Ιωσαφάτ είχε γίνει βασιλιάς του Ιούδα σε ηλικία τριάντα πέντε ετών. Βασίλεψε είκοσι πέντε χρόνια στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Η μητέρα του ονομαζόταν Αζουβά και ήταν κόρη του Σιχλί. 32 Ο Ιωσαφάτ έκανε το σωστό ενώπιον του Κυρίου, ακολουθώντας απαρέγκλητα το παράδειγμα του Ασά, του πατέρα του. 33 Αλλά οι ιεροί τόποι δεν καταργήθηκαν τελείως, γιατί ο λαός δεν είχε αφοσιωθεί ολόψυχα στο Θεό των προγόνων του.

34 Η υπόλοιπη ιστορία του Ιωσαφάτ, από την αρχή ως το τέλος, είναι καταχωρισμένη στα Χρονικά του Ιηού, γιου του Ανανί, έργο που συμπεριλαμβάνεται στο βιβλίο των βασιλιάδων του Ισραήλ.

35 Μετά απ’ αυτά τα γεγονότα, ο Ιωσαφάτ, βασιλιάς του Ιούδα συμμάχησε με τον Οχοζία, βασιλιά του Ισραήλ, που η συμπεριφορά του ήταν ασεβής. 36 Ο Ιωσαφάτ συμμάχησε μαζί του για να κατασκευάσουν πλοία, που να πηγαίνουν στη Θαρσείς. Η κατασκευή των πλοίων γινόταν στο λιμάνι της Εσιών-Γάβερ. 37 Αλλά ο προφήτης Ελιέζερ, γιος του Δωδαυά από τη Μαρεσά, προφήτεψε εναντίον του Ιωσαφάτ και είπε: «Επειδή συμμάχησες με τον Οχοζία, ο Κύριος θα καταστρέψει τα έργα σου». Έτσι τα πλοία ναυάγησαν και δεν μπόρεσαν να πάνε στη Θαρσείς.

1 It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle. 2 Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi. 3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.*20.3 himself: Heb. his face 4 And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.

5 And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, 6 And said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee? 7 Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever?*20.7 who: Heb. thou 8 And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying, 9 If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help. 10 And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not; 11 Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit. 12 O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee. 13 And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.

14 Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation; 15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16 To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel.*20.16 cliff: Heb. ascent*20.16 brook: or, valley 17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you. 18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshipping the LORD. 19 And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high.

20 And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. 21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.*20.21 that…: Heb. praisers

22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.*20.22 And when…: Heb. And in the time that they, etc*20.22 to sing…: Heb. in singing and praise*20.22 they were…: or, they smote one another 23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.*20.23 to destroy: Heb. for the destruction 24 And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.*20.24 none…: Heb. there was not an escaping 25 And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much.

26 And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this day.*20.26 Berachah: that is, blessing 27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies.*20.27 forefront: Heb. head 28 And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD. 29 And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel. 30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave him rest round about.

31 And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. 32 And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD. 33 Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers. 34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel.*20.34 book of Jehu: Heb. words, etc*20.34 is mentioned: Heb. was made to ascend

35 And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly: 36 And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish: and they made the ships in Ezion-geber. 37 Then Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the LORD hath broken thy works. And the ships were broken, that they were not able to go to Tarshish.
