1 Τότε ο Σολομών φώναξε: «Κύριε, έχεις πει ότι θέλεις να κατοικείς μέσα στο γνόφο. 2 Γι’ αυτό κι εγώ έχτισα για σένα αυτόν το ναό, έναν τόπο για να κατοικείς αιώνια».

3 Καθώς ολόκληρη η ισραηλιτική κοινότητα στεκόταν μπροστά στο βασιλιά, εκείνος έστρεψε το πρόσωπό του και τους ευλόγησε. 4 Μετά είπε:

«Ευλογημένος ας είναι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, που πραγματοποίησε με τη δύναμή του εκείνο που ο ίδιος είχε υποσχεθεί στον πατέρα μου Δαβίδ! 5 "Από την ημέρα που έβγαλα το λαό μου τον Ισραήλ από την Αίγυπτο", του είχε πει, "καμιά πόλη*καμιά πόλη. Βλ. υποσ. εις Α΄ Βασ. 8:16. δε διάλεξα απ’ όλες τις φυλές του λαού Ισραήλ για να χτίσω εκεί ναό, όπου να λατρεύεται το όνομά μου, ούτε διάλεξα κανέναν για να είναι αρχηγός του λαού μου, του Ισραήλ. 6 Διάλεξα όμως την Ιερουσαλήμ, για να λατρεύομαι εκεί, και εσένα Δαβίδ, για να γίνεις αρχηγός του λαού μου, του Ισραήλ". 7 Κι όταν ο πατέρας μου ο Δαβίδ σκόπευε να χτίσει ναό στο όνομα του Κυρίου, του Θεού του Ισραήλ, 8 ο Κύριος του είπε: "ωραία ήταν η πρόθεσή σου να χτίσεις ναό στο όνομά μου. 9 Δε θα χτίσεις όμως εσύ το ναό, αλλά ο γιος σου που θα προέρχεται από σένα. Αυτός θα χτίσει ναό στο όνομά μου". 10 Ο Κύριος πραγματοποίησε την υπόσχεσή του: Διαδέχτηκα εγώ τον πατέρα μου Δαβίδ στο θρόνο του Ισραήλ, και έχτισα το ναό προς τιμή του Κυρίου, του Θεού του Ισραήλ. 11 Επίσης τοποθέτησα εκεί την κιβωτό, μέσα στην οποία υπάρχει η γραπτή διαθήκη που έκανε ο Κύριος με τους Ισραηλίτες».

12 Μετά στάθηκε ο Σολομών μπροστά στο θυσιαστήριο του Κυρίου, απέναντι σ’ όλη την ισραηλιτική κοινότητα και άπλωσε τα χέρια του. 13 Ο Σολομών είχε κατασκευάσει μια χάλκινη εξέδρα μήκους πέντε πηχών, πλάτους επίσης πέντε πηχών και ύψους τριών, και την είχε τοποθετήσει στη μέση της αυλής του ναού. Ανέβηκε, λοιπόν, πάνω σ’ αυτήν και γονάτισε μπροστά σ’ όλη την ισραηλιτική κοινότητα· σήκωσε τα χέρια του στον ουρανό 14 και είπε:

«Κύριε, Θεέ του Ισραήλ, δεν υπάρχει Θεός όμοιος μ’ εσένα στον ουρανό και στη γη. Τηρείς τη διαθήκη σου με τους δούλους σου και δεν παύεις να τους αγαπάς, όταν ζουν ενώπιόν σου με απόλυτη τιμιότητα. 15 Όλα όσα εσύ ο ίδιος είχες υποσχεθεί στο δούλο σου Δαβίδ, τον πατέρα μου, τα πραγματοποίησες σήμερα με τη δύναμή σου. 16 Τώρα, λοιπόν, Κύριε Θεέ του Ισραήλ, εκπλήρωσε και την υπόσχεση που έδωσες στο δούλο σου, τον πατέρα μου Δαβίδ, ότι αν οι απόγονοί του φροντίζουν να ζουν ενώπιόν σου με υπακοή, όπως εκείνος, θα υπάρχει πάντοτε κάποιος απ’ αυτούς που θα βασιλεύει στον Ισραήλ μετά από κείνον. 17 Ας πραγματοποιηθεί, λοιπόν, τώρα, Κύριε, Θεέ του Ισραήλ, η υπόσχεση που έδωσες στο δούλο σου το Δαβίδ.

18 «Πώς θα μπορούσες όμως, αλήθεια, να κατοικήσεις μαζί με τον άνθρωπο στη γη; Οι ουρανοί και οι ουρανοί των ουρανών να σε χωρέσουν δεν μπορούν. Πώς, λοιπόν, θα σε χωρέσει αυτός εδώ ο ναός που έχτισα; 19 Ωστόσο, Κύριε Θεέ μου, στρέψε μ’ ευμένεια το πρόσωπό σου σ’ εμένα το δούλο σου, άκουσε την προσευχή μου και την παράκλησή μου, και δώσε αυτά που με κραυγές και δεήσεις σου ζητάω σήμερα, εγώ ο δούλος σου. 20 Ας είναι ανοιχτά τα μάτια σου πάνω σ’ ετούτο το ναό μέρα και νύχτα, πάνω στον τόπο, στον οποίο όρισες να λατρεύεται το όνομά σου. Άκουσε την προσευχή, που σου απευθύνω εγώ, ο δούλος σου, απ’ αυτόν εδώ τον τόπο. 21 Άκουσε τις παρακλήσεις του δούλου σου και του λαού σου του Ισραήλ, όταν στραμμένοι προς αυτόν εδώ τον τόπο θα προσευχόμαστε. Άκουσέ μας από τον ουρανό, όπου κατοικείς· άκουσέ μας και συγχώρησέ μας».

22 «Αν κάποιος κατηγορηθεί ότι αμάρτησε στο συνάνθρωπό του, και του ζητηθεί να πάρει όρκο για την αθωότητά του, κι έρθει και ορκιστεί μπροστά στο θυσιαστήριό σου, σ’ αυτόν εδώ το ναό, 23 τότε, εσύ Κύριε, άκουσε από τον ουρανό κι ενέργησε και απόδωσε το δίκαιο στους δούλους σου: Φανέρωσε την ενοχή του ασεβή και τιμώρησε την πράξη του· δικαίωσε τον δίκαιο και απόδωσέ του σύμφωνα με την αθωότητά του.

24 »Αν συμβεί ο λαός σου, ο Ισραήλ, να νικηθεί από τον εχθρό, γιατί θα ’χουνε σ’ εσένα αμαρτήσει, αλλά επιστρέψουν σ’ εσένα και σε δοξολογήσουν, αν προσευχηθούν και σε ικετέψουν στο ναό αυτό, 25 τότε εσύ, Κύριε, άκουσε από τον ουρανό, και συγχώρησε την αμαρτία του λαού σου, του Ισραήλ, και φέρε τους πίσω ξανά στη χώρα που έδωσες σ’ αυτούς και στους προγόνους τους.

26 »Αν κλείσει ο ουρανός και δε στέλνει βροχή, γιατί θα ’χουνε σ’ εσένα αμαρτήσει, αλλά προσευχηθούν στον τόπο αυτό και σε δοξολογήσουν, αν ταπεινωμένοι από την τιμωρία που τους έστειλες, μετανοήσουν για την αμαρτία τους, 27 τότε εσύ, Κύριε, άκουσε από τους ουρανούς και συγχώρησε την αμαρτία των δούλων σου, του λαού σου Ισραήλ, και δίδαξέ τους το δρόμο το σωστό, που θα πρέπει να βαδίζουν· στείλε βροχή στη χώρα αυτή που ανήκει σ’ εσένα και την έχεις δώσει ιδιοκτησία στο λαό σου.

28 »Αν πέσει πείνα στη χώρα ή θανατικό, αν έρθει λίβας ή μούχλα των σιτηρών ή ακρίδα κάθε είδους, αν οι εχθροί τους φτάσουν ως τις πόλεις τους και τις πολιορκήσουν ή έρθει οποιαδήποτε μάστιγα ή αρρώστια, 29 αλλά γίνει προσευχή από τους Ισραηλίτες, είτε ατομικά είτε απ’ όλο το λαό, απλώνοντας τα χέρια τους προς το ναό αυτό με τύψεις στην καρδιά τους, 30 τότε εσύ, Κύριε, άκουσε από τον ουρανό, όπου κατοικείς, συγχώρησέ τους και ενέργησε αποδίδοντας στον καθένα σύμφωνα με τα έργα του. Εσύ γνωρίζεις την καρδιά του καθενός· μόνο εσύ γνωρίζεις όλων των ανθρώπων τις καρδιές. 31 Έτσι θα σε σέβονται όσο θα ζουν στη χώρα αυτή που έδωσες στους προγόνους μας.

32 »Ακόμα κι έναν ξένο, που δεν ανήκει στο λαό σου τον Ισραήλ, αλλά ήρθε από κάποια χώρα μακρινή, επειδή άκουσε για σένα πόσο μεγάλος είσαι και πόσο μεγάλη, πόσο ακαταμάχητη είναι η δύναμή σου, αν έρθει και προσευχηθεί στο ναό αυτό, 33 άκουσέ τον κι αυτόν εσύ, Κύριε, από τον ουρανό όπου κατοικείς, και δώσ’ του ό,τι σου ζητήσει. Έτσι θα σε γνωρίσουν όλα τα έθνη της γης και θα σε σέβονται, όπως ο λαός σου ο Ισραήλ· έτσι θα μάθουν ότι ο ναός αυτός που έχτισα είναι ο τόπος όπου εσύ λατρεύεσαι.

34 »Όταν ο λαός σου θα πηγαίνει να πολεμήσει τους εχθρούς του, όπου εσύ τον στείλεις, αν προσευχηθεί σ’ εσένα, τον Κύριο, στρέφοντας τα μάτια προς αυτή την πόλη που διάλεξες και προς το ναό που σου έχτισα, 35 τότε εσύ, Κύριε, άκουσε από τον ουρανό την προσευχή τους και την παράκλησή τους και απόδωσε το δίκιο τους.

36 »Αν αμαρτήσουν σ’ εσένα –αφού κανείς δεν είναι αναμάρτητος– κι οργιστείς εναντίον τους και τους παραδώσεις στους εχθρούς τους κι αυτοί τους οδηγήσουν αιχμαλώτους σε εχθρική χώρα κοντινή ή μακρινή, 37 αλλά εκεί στη χώρα που θα βρίσκονται αιχμάλωτοι συνέλθουν και μετανοήσουν και σε παρακαλέσουν από ’κει και σου πουν "αμαρτήσαμε, ανομήσαμε και αδικήσαμε", 38 αν επιστρέψουν σ’ εσένα μ’ όλη τους την καρδιά και την ψυχή, εκεί στη χώρα που θα βρίσκονται αιχμάλωτοι και προσευχηθούν σ’ εσένα στραμμένοι προς τη χώρα τους, αυτήν που έδωσες στους προγόνους τους, προς την πόλη που διάλεξες και προς το ναό που σου έχτισα, 39 τότε εσύ, Κύριε, άκουσε από τον ουρανό, όπου κατοικείς, την προσευχή τους και την παράκλησή τους κι απόδωσέ τους το δίκιο τους· συγχώρησε το λαό σου, που θα ’χει αμαρτήσει σ’ εσένα. 40 Και τώρα, Θεέ μου, σε παρακαλώ, ας είναι πάντοτε ανοιχτά τα μάτια σου και προσεκτικά τ’ αυτιά σου στην προσευχή, που γίνεται στον τόπο αυτό.

41 »Τώρα σήκω, Κύριε Θεέ μας,

στον τόπο έλα της ανάπαυσής σου,

την κιβωτό της δύναμής σου συνόδεψε.

Οι ιερείς σου, Κύριε Θεέ,

τη θεία σου βοήθεια να ’ναι ντυμένοι

και οι πιστοί σου ας χαίρονται τα αγαθά ευτυχισμένοι.

42 Κύριε Θεέ,

μη στερήσεις από τον εκλεκτό σου την παρουσία σου·

θυμήσου την αγάπη σου στο δούλο σου το Δαβίδ».

1 Then said Solomon, The LORD hath said that he would dwell in the thick darkness. 2 But I have built an house of habitation for thee, and a place for thy dwelling for ever. 3 And the king turned his face, and blessed the whole congregation of Israel: and all the congregation of Israel stood. 4 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who hath with his hands fulfilled that which he spake with his mouth to my father David, saying, 5 Since the day that I brought forth my people out of the land of Egypt I chose no city among all the tribes of Israel to build an house in, that my name might be there; neither chose I any man to be a ruler over my people Israel: 6 But I have chosen Jerusalem, that my name might be there; and have chosen David to be over my people Israel. 7 Now it was in the heart of David my father to build an house for the name of the LORD God of Israel. 8 But the LORD said to David my father, Forasmuch as it was in thine heart to build an house for my name, thou didst well in that it was in thine heart: 9 Notwithstanding thou shalt not build the house; but thy son which shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build the house for my name. 10 The LORD therefore hath performed his word that he hath spoken: for I am risen up in the room of David my father, and am set on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and have built the house for the name of the LORD God of Israel. 11 And in it have I put the ark, wherein is the covenant of the LORD, that he made with the children of Israel.

12 And he stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands: 13 For Solomon had made a brasen scaffold, of five cubits long, and five cubits broad, and three cubits high, and had set it in the midst of the court: and upon it he stood, and kneeled down upon his knees before all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven,*6.13 long…: Heb. the length thereof, etc 14 And said, O LORD God of Israel, there is no God like thee in the heaven, nor in the earth; which keepest covenant, and shewest mercy unto thy servants, that walk before thee with all their hearts: 15 Thou which hast kept with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him; and spakest with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is this day. 16 Now therefore, O LORD God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit upon the throne of Israel; yet so that thy children take heed to their way to walk in my law, as thou hast walked before me.*6.16 There…: Heb.
