1 Οι κάτοικοι της Ιερουσαλήμ έκαναν βασιλιά στη θέση του Ιωράμ τον νεότερο γιο του, τον Οχοζία, γιατί όλους τους μεγαλύτερους τους είχε σκοτώσει ο στρατός των Αράβων που είχε εισβάλει στο στρατόπεδο του Ιούδα. Έτσι έγινε βασιλιάς του Ιούδα ο Οχοζίας 2 σε ηλικία είκοσι ετών, και βασίλεψε ένα χρόνο στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Η μητέρα του ονομαζόταν Γοθολία και ήταν εγγονή του Αμρί.*είκοσι ετών, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «σαράντα δύο» και το Β΄ Βασ 8:26 έχει «είκοσι δύο». – Κατά το 21:6 η Γοθολία ήταν κόρη του Αχαάβ, και συνεπώς εγγονή του Αμρί, αρχαίου βασιλιά του Ισραήλ.3 Ο Οχοζίας ακολούθησε κι αυτός το παράδειγμα της οικογένειας Αχαάβ, γιατί η μάνα του τού έδινε συμβουλές, που τον οδηγούσαν στην αμαρτία. 4 Έπραξε ό,τι δυσαρεστεί τον Κύριο, όπως άλλωστε και όλη η οικογένεια του Αχαάβ· μετά το θάνατο του πατέρα του, αυτοί ήταν σύμβουλοι για την καταστροφή του.

5 Ακόμη, ακολουθώντας τη συμβουλή τους, ο Οχοζίας πήγε μαζί με τον Ιωράμ, γιο του Αχαάβ, βασιλιά του Ισραήλ, να πολεμήσει εναντίον του Αζαήλ, βασιλιά των Συρίων στη Ραμώθ, στη Γαλαάδ. Οι Σύριοι όμως πλήγωσαν τον Ιωράμ στη μάχη, 6 κι αυτός γύρισε στην Ιζρεέλ για να θεραπευτεί από τα τραύματά του. Τότε ο Οχοζίας,*Οχοζίας, σύμφωνα με πολλά χειρόγραφα. Το εβρ. έχει «Αζαρίας». κατέβηκε στην Ιζρεέλ να τον επισκεφτεί, που ήταν άρρωστος. 7 Αλλά ο Θεός είχε αποφασίσει την καταστροφή του Οχοζία. Έτσι, όταν ήρθε στον Ιωράμ, πήρε μέρος μαζί μ’ αυτόν σε μια συμπλοκή εναντίον του Ιηού, απογόνου του Νιμσί, τον οποίο όμως ο Κύριος είχε χρίσει στο μεταξύ βασιλιά, για να εξοντώσει την οικογένεια του Αχαάβ. 8 Τον καιρό που ο Ιηού εκτελούσε την κρίση του Θεού εναντίον της οικογένειας του Αχαάβ, βρήκε τους άρχοντες του λαού του Ιούδα και τους ανηψιούς του Οχοζία, που ήταν στην υπηρεσία του και τους σκότωσε. 9 Αναζήτησε και τον Οχοζία και τον συνέλαβαν, ενώ αυτός κρυβόταν στη Σαμάρεια. Τον έφεραν μπροστά στον Ιηού και τον σκότωσαν. Τον έθαψαν, όμως κανονικά. «Εγγονός του Ιωσαφάτ είναι», είπαν, «κι ο Ιωσαφάτ επιδίωκε να υπακούει τον Κύριο μ’ όλη του την καρδιά».

Οι απόγονοι του Οχοζία δεν είχαν τη δύναμη να κρατήσουν τη βασιλεία.

10 Η Γοθολία, μητέρα του Οχοζία, όταν είδε ότι ο γιος της ήταν νεκρός, διέταξε να εξοντώσουν όλους τους απογόνους της βασιλικής οικογένειας του Ιούδα. 11 Αλλά η Ιεωσεβά, κόρη του βασιλιά Ιωράμ, άρπαξε κρυφά τον Ιωάς, γιο του Οχοζία, ανάμεσα από τους γιους του βασιλιά που επρόκειτο να θανατωθούν, και τον έκρυψε με την παραμάνα του σ’ ένα υπνοδωμάτιο του ναού. Η Ιεωσεβά, κόρη του Ιωράμ, ήταν γυναίκα του ιερέα Ιεωϊαδά και αδερφή του Οχοζία. Έτσι μπόρεσε κι έκρυψε τον Ιωάς από τη Γοθολία και δεν τον σκότωσε. 12 Ο Ιωάς κρυβόταν στο ναό του Θεού μαζί με την παραμάνα του και τη θεία του έξι χρόνια, δηλαδή όσο χρόνο η Γοθολία βασίλευε στη χώρα.

1 And the inhabitants of Jerusalem made Ahaziah his youngest son king in his stead: for the band of men that came with the Arabians to the camp had slain all the eldest. So Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned. 2 Forty and two years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Athaliah the daughter of Omri. 3 He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab: for his mother was his counsellor to do wickedly. 4 Wherefore he did evil in the sight of the LORD like the house of Ahab: for they were his counsellors after the death of his father to his destruction.

5 He walked also after their counsel, and went with Jehoram the son of Ahab king of Israel to war against Hazael king of Syria at Ramoth-gilead: and the Syrians smote Joram. 6 And he returned to be healed in Jezreel because of the wounds which were given him at Ramah, when he fought with Hazael king of Syria. And Azariah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab at Jezreel, because he was sick.*22.6 which…: Heb. wherewith they wounded him*22.6 Azariah: also called, Ahaziah, or, Jehoahaz 7 And the destruction of Ahaziah was of God by coming to Joram: for when he was come, he went out with Jehoram against Jehu the son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had anointed to cut off the house of Ahab.*22.7 destruction: Heb. treading down 8 And it came to pass, that, when Jehu was executing judgment upon the house of Ahab, and found the princes of Judah, and the sons of the brethren of Ahaziah, that ministered to Ahaziah, he slew them. 9 And he sought Ahaziah: and they caught him, (for he was hid in Samaria,) and brought him to Jehu: and when they had slain him, they buried him: Because, said they, he is the son of Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart. So the house of Ahaziah had no power to keep still the kingdom.

10 But when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Judah. 11 But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king’s sons that were slain, and put him and his nurse in a bedchamber. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest, (for she was the sister of Ahaziah,) hid him from Athaliah, so that she slew him not.*22.11 Jehoshabeath: also called, Jehosheba 12 And he was with them hid in the house of God six years: and Athaliah reigned over the land.
