1 Μετά ο Έσδρας πήγε από την αυλή του ναού στο σκευοφυλάκιο του Ιωνάν, γιου του Ελιασίβου, 2 και πέρασε τη νύχτα του εκεί. Δεν έφαγε ούτε ήπιε τίποτα και πενθούσε για τις αμαρτίες του λαού, που ήταν τόσο μεγάλες.

3 Ειδοποιήθηκαν λοιπόν σ’ όλη την Ιουδαία και την Ιερουσαλήμ να συγκεντρωθούν στην Ιερουσαλήμ όλοι όσοι είχαν επιστρέψει από την αιχμαλωσία. 4 Όσοι δεν θα παρουσιάζονταν σε δυο τρεις μέρες, σύμφωνα με την απόφαση των προϊσταμένων πρεσβυτέρων, θα γινόταν κατάσχεση στα ζώα τους και οι ίδιοι θα αποκόπτονταν απ’ τον υπόλοιπο λαό, που είχε γυρίσει από την αιχμαλωσία. 5 Σε τρεις μέρες, λοιπόν, την εικοστή ημέρα του ένατου μήνα, συγκεντρώθηκαν στην Ιερουσαλήμ όσοι κατάγονταν από τις φυλές Ιούδα και Βενιαμίν 6 και κάθισαν μαζί όλος ο λαός στον ανοιχτό χώρο του ναού τρέμοντας από το χειμωνιάτικο κρύο που επικρατούσε.

7 Τότε ο Έσδρας σηκώθηκε και τους είπε: «Εσείς έχετε παραβεί το νόμο, επειδή πήρατε αλλοεθνείς γυναίκες, κι έτσι προσθέσατε αμαρτίες στον ισραηλιτικό λαό. 8 Τώρα, λοιπόν, ευχαριστήστε και δοξάστε τον Κύριο το Θεό των προγόνων μας 9 και εκπληρώστε το θέλημά του: Αποχωριστείτε από τους ειδωλολάτρες που κατοικούν στη χώρα μας και διώξτε τις αλλοεθνείς γυναίκες σας».

10 Τότε ο λαός απάντησε με δυνατή φωνή: «Όπως είπες, έτσι θα κάνουμε. 11 Το πλήθος όμως είναι πολύ και δεν μπορούμε να μείνουμε στο ύπαιθρο χειμώνα καιρό· δεν έχουμε βρει ακόμη καταλύματα. Η υπόθεση αυτή δεν είναι έργο μιας ή δυο ημερών, γιατί είμαστε πολλοί που έχουμε πέσει σ’ αυτή την αμαρτία. 12 Ας μείνουν εδώ μόνο οι άρχοντές μας· και όσοι από τα μέρη μας έχουν πάρει αλλοεθνείς γυναίκες ας έρθουν εδώ έναν ορισμένο χρόνο, 13 μαζί με τους άρχοντες και τους δικαστές κάθε τόπου. Έτσι θ’ αποτρέψουμε την οργή του Κυρίου γι’ αυτήν την πράξη μας». 14 Την τήρηση της διαδικασίας αυτής την ανέλαβαν ο Ιωναθάς, γιος του Αζαήλου και ο Ιεζίας, γιος του Θοκανού, με βοηθούς το Μοσόλλαμο, το Λευί και το Σαββαταίο.

15 Αυτοί που είχαν γυρίσει από την αιχμαλωσία έκαναν λεπτομερή έρευνα όλων των περιπτώσεων. 16 Ο ιερέας Έσδρας διόρισε άντρες από τους αρχηγούς των συγγενειών, και κατέγραψε τα ονόματά τους. Την πρώτη μέρα του δέκατου μήνα συνεδρίασαν για ν’ αρχίσουν την έρευνα. 17 Και μέσα σε τρεις μήνες είχαν τελειώσει με τη διερεύνηση όλων των περιπτώσεων των αντρών που είχαν πάρει γυναίκες αλλοεθνείς.

18 Αυτά είναι τα ονόματα των ιερέων, που είχαν συγκεντρωθεί εκεί και βρέθηκαν να έχουν πάρει αλλοεθνείς γυναίκες: 19 Από τη συγγένεια του Ιησού, γιου του Ιωσεδέκ, και τους αδερφούς του, ο Μασήας, ο Ελεάζαρος, ο Ιώριβος και ο Ιωδάνος. 20 Έδωσαν τα χέρια και υποσχέθηκαν να χωρίσουν τις γυναίκες τους· επίσης πρόσφεραν κριάρια για να εξιλεωθούν από την αμαρτία τους. 21 Από τη συγγένεια του Εμμήρ, ο Ανανίας, ο Ζαβδαίος, ο Μάνης, ο Σαμαίος, ο Ιηήλ και ο Αζαρίας. 22 Από τη συγγένεια του Φαισούρ, ο Ελιωναΐς, ο Μασσίας, ο Ισμαήλος, ο Ναθαναήλος, ο Ωκίδηλος και ο Σάλθας.

23 Από τους λευίτες: Ο Ιωζάβδος, ο Σεμεΐς, ο Κώλιος, δηλαδή ο Καλιτάς, ο Παθαίος, ο Ιούδας και ο Ιωανάς.

24 Από τους ψάλτες: Ο Ελιάσιβος, και ο Βακχούρος.

25 Από τους θυρωρούς: Ο Σαλλούμος και ο Τολβάνης.

26 Από τους υπόλοιπους Ισραηλίτες: Από τη συγγένεια του Φόρος, ο Ιερμάς, ο Ιεζίας, ο Μελχίας, ο Μιαμίνος, ο Ελεάζαρος, ο Ασιβίας και ο Βανναίας. 27 Από τη συγγένεια του Ηλάμ, ο Ματανίας, ο Ζαχαρίας, ο Ιεζριήλος, ο Ωβαδίος, ο Ιερεμώθ και ο Ηλίας. 28 Από τη συγγένεια του Ζαμόθ, ο Ελιαδάς, ο Ελιάσιμος, ο Οθονίας, ο Ιαριμώθ, ο Σάβαθος και ο Ζερδαΐας. 29 Από τη συγγένεια του Βηβαΐ, ο Ιωάννης, ο Ανανίας, ο Ζαβδός και ο Εμαθίς. 30 Από τη συγγένεια του Μανί, ο Ωλαμός, ο Μαμούχος, ο Ιεδαίος, ο Ιασούβος, ο Αασαήλος και ο Ιερεμώθ. 31 Από τη συγγένεια του Αδδί, ο Νάαθος, ο Μοοσίας, ο Λακκούνος, ο Ναΐδος, ο Βεσκασπασμύς, ο Σεσθύλ, ο Βαλνούος και ο Μανασσήας. 32 Από τη συγγένεια του Αννάν, ο Ελιωνάς, ο Ασαΐας, ο Μελχίας, ο Σαβαΐας, και ο Σίμων ο Χοσαμαίος. 33 Από τη συγγένεια του Ασόμ, ο Μαλτανναίος, ο Ματταθίας, ο Σαβανναίος, ο Ελιφαλάτ, ο Μανασσής και ο Σεμεΐ. 34 Από τη συγγένεια του Βαανί, ο Ιερεμίας, ο Μομδίος, ο Μαήρος, ο Ιουήλ, ο Μαμδαΐ, ο Πεδίας, ο Άνως, ο Καραβασιών, ο Ελιάσιβος, ο Μαμνιτάναιμος, ο Ελίασις, ο Βαννούς, ο Ελιαλίς, ο Σομεΐς, ο Σελεμίας, και ο Ναθανίας. Από τη συγγένεια του Εζωρά, ο Σεσσίς, ο Εζρίλ, ο Αζαήλος, ο Σαματός, ο Ζαμβρίς και ο Ιώσηπος. 35 Από τη συγγένεια του Νοομά, ο Μαζιτίας, ο Ζαβαδαίας, ο Ηδαΐς, ο Ιουήλ και ο Βαναίας. 36 Όλοι αυτοί είχαν πάρει αλλοεθνείς γυναίκες και τις έδιωξαν μαζί με τα παιδιά τους.

37 Οι ιερείς και οι λευίτες και πολλοί από τους Ισραηλίτες εγκαταστάθηκαν στην Ιερουσαλήμ και στη γύρω περιοχή. Τον έβδομο μήνα οι Ισραηλίτες είχαν όλοι εγκατασταθεί στα σπίτια τους. Την πρώτη μέρα του ίδιου μήνα 38 συγκεντρώθηκαν όλοι τους στον ανοιχτό χώρο που βρίσκεται μέσα από την ανατολική πύλη του ναού, 39 και είπαν στον Έσδρα τον αρχιερέα και γνώστη του νόμου του Μωυσή να φέρει το βιβλίο του νόμου, που είχε παραδοθεί από τον Κύριο, το Θεό του Ισραήλ. 40 Τότε ο Έσδρας έφερε το νόμο μπροστά σ’ όλο το λαό –άντρες, γυναίκες και ιερείς– για να τον ακούσουν. 41 Εκεί, στον ανοιχτό χώρο μπροστά στην πύλη του ναού, τούς διάβαζε το νόμο από νωρίς το πρωί μέχρι το μεσημέρι. Και όλος ο λαός άκουγε με προσοχή.

42 Ο Έσδρας είχε σταθεί σε μια ξύλινη εξέδρα που είχε ειδικά κατασκευαστεί. 43 Κοντά του στα δεξιά είχαν σταθεί ο Ματταθίας, ο Σαμμούς, ο Ανανίας, ο Αζαρίας, ο Ουρίας, ο Εζεκίας και ο Βαάλσαμος. 44 Στ’ αριστερά ο Φαδαίος, ο Μισαήλ, ο Μελχίας, ο Λωθάσουβος, ο Ναβαρίας και ο Ζαχαρίας.

45 Ο Έσδρας, από την τιμητική θέση που στεκόταν, σήκωσε ψηλά το βιβλίο να το δουν όλοι. 46 Κι όταν άνοιξε το νόμο στάθηκαν όλοι όρθιοι. Τότε ο Έσδρας δόξασε τον ύψιστο Θεό, τον κραταιό Κύριο του σύμπαντος. 47 Κι όλος ο λαός αναφώνησε: «Αμήν!» Σήκωσαν ψηλά τα χέρια κι έπεσαν στη γη και προσκύνησαν τον Κύριο.

48 Οι παρακάτω λευίτες δίδασκαν το νόμο του Κυρίου και τον διάβαζαν στο λαό, βοηθώντας τους να καταλάβουν αυτά που διάβαζαν: Ιησούς, Ανιούθ, Σαραβίας, Ιαδινός, Ιάκουβος, Σαββαταίος, Αυταίας, Μαιάνας, Καλίτας, Αζαρίας, Ιώζαβδος, Ανανίας και Φαλίας.

49,50 Όταν ο λαός άκουσε το νόμο συγκινήθηκαν όλοι και άρχισαν να κλαίνε. Τότε ο Ατταράτης*Ατταράτης. Μάλλον πρόκειται για μεταγραφή από τα εβραϊκά του τίτλου «κυβερνήτης», που αποδίδεται στο Νεεμία (βλ. Νε 8:9). είπε στον Έσδρα, τον ιερέα και γνώστη του νόμου και σ’ όλους τους λευίτες που δίδασκαν το λαό: «Αυτή η ημέρα είναι αφιερωμένη στον Κύριο. 51 Πηγαίνετε λοιπόν και φάτε από τα πιο εκλεκτά φαγητά, πιείτε γλυκό κρασί και στείλτε μερίδες σ’ όσους δεν έχουν, 52 γιατί αυτή η ημέρα είναι αφιερωμένη στον Κύριο. Και μη λυπάστε, γιατί ο Κύριος θα σας ξαναδώσει την παλιά σας δόξα».

53 Με τη σειρά τους οι λευίτες παρότρυναν το λαό: «Η μέρα αυτή είναι άγια· μη λυπάστε». 54 Έτσι όλοι έφυγαν και πήγαν να φάνε, να πιούνε και να χαρούν. Έστειλαν μερίδες και σ’ εκείνους που δεν είχαν. Ήταν όλοι τους πανευτυχείς, 55 γιατί με τα λόγια που διδάχτηκαν είχαν εμψυχωθεί.

1 Then Esdras rising from the court of the temple went to the chamber of Joanan the son of Eliasib,

2 And remained there, and did eat no meat nor drink water, mourning for the great iniquities of the multitude.

3 And there was a proclamation in all Jewry and Jerusalem to all them that were of the captivity, that they should be gathered together at Jerusalem:

4 And that whosoever met not there within two or three days according as the elders that bare rule appointed, their cattle should be seized to the use of the temple, and himself cast out from them that were of the captivity.

5 And in three days were all they of the tribe of Judah and Benjamin gathered together at Jerusalem the twentieth day of the ninth month.

6 And all the multitude sat trembling in the broad court of the temple because of the present foul weather.

7 So Esdras arose up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed the law in marrying strange wives, thereby to increase the sins of Israel.

8 And now by confessing give glory unto the Lord God of our fathers,

9 And do his will, and separate yourselves from the heathen of the land, and from the strange women.

10 Then cried the whole multitude, and said with a loud voice, Like as thou hast spoken, so will we do.

11 But forasmuch as the people are many, and it is foul weather, so that we cannot stand without, and this is not a work of a day or two, seeing our sin in these things is spread far:

12 Therefore let the rulers of the multitude stay, and let all them of our habitations that have strange wives come at the time appointed,

13 And with them the rulers and judges of every place, till we turn away the wrath of the Lord from us for this matter.

14 Then Jonathan the son of Azael and Ezechias the son of Theocanus accordingly took this matter upon them: and Mosollam and Levis and Sabbatheus helped them.

15 And they that were of the captivity did according to all these things.

16 And Esdras the priest chose unto him the principal men of their families, all by name: and in the first day of the tenth month they sat together to examine the matter.

17 So their cause that held strange wives was brought to an end in the first day of the first month.

18 And of the priests that were come together, and had strange wives, there were found:

19 Of the sons of Jesus the son of Josedec, and his brethren; Matthelas and Eleazar, and Joribus and Joadanus.

20 And they gave their hands to put away their wives and to offer rams to make reconcilement for their errors.

21 And of the sons of Emmer; Ananias, and Zabdeus, and Eanes, and Sameius, and Hiereel, and Azarias.

22 And of the sons of Phaisur; Elionas, Massias, Israel, and Nathanael, and Ocidelus, and Talsas.

23 And of the Levites; Jozabad, and Semis, and Colius, who was called Calitas, and Patheus, and Judas, and Jonas.

24 Of the holy singers; Eleazurus, Bacchurus.

25 Of the porters; Sallumus, and Tolbanes.

26 Of them of Israel, of the sons of Phoros; Hiermas, and Eddias, and Melchias, and Maelus, and Eleazar, and Asibias, and Baanias.

27 Of the sons of Ela; Matthanias, Zacharias, and Hierielus, and Hieremoth, and Aedias.

28 And of the sons of Zamoth; Eliadas, Elisimus, Othonias, Jarimoth, and Sabatus, and Sardeus.

29 Of the sons of Babai; Johannes, and Ananias and Josabad, and Amatheis.

30 Of the sons of Mani; Olamus, Mamuchus, Jedeus, Jasubus, Jasael, and Hieremoth.

31 And of the sons of Addi; Naathus, and Moosias, Lacunus, and Naidus, and Mathanias, and Sesthel, Balnuus, and Manasseas.

35 And of the sons of Ethma; Mazitias, Zabadaias, Edes, Juel, Banaias.

36 All these had taken strange wives, and they put them away with their children.

37 And the priests and Levites, and they that were of Israel, dwelt in Jerusalem, and in the country, in the first day of the seventh month: so the children of Israel were in their habitations.

38 And the whole multitude came together with one accord into the broad place of the holy porch toward the east:

39 And they spake unto Esdras the priest and reader, that he would bring the law of Moses, that was given of the Lord God of Israel.

40 So Esdras the chief priest brought the law unto the whole multitude from man to woman, and to all the priests, to hear law in the first day of the seventh month.

41 And he read in the broad court before the holy porch from morning unto midday, before both men and women; and the multitude gave heed unto the law.

42 And Esdras the priest and reader of the law stood up upon a pulpit of wood, which was made for that purpose.

43 And there stood up by him Mattathias, Sammus, Ananias, Azarias, Urias, Ezecias, Balasamus, upon the right hand:

44 And upon his left hand stood Phaldaius, Misael, Melchias, Lothasubus, and Nabarias.

45 Then took Esdras the book of the law before the multitude: for he sat honourably in the first place in the sight of them all.

46 And when he opened the law, they stood all straight up. So Esdras blessed the Lord God most High, the God of hosts, Almighty.

47 And all the people answered, Amen; and lifting up their hands they fell to the ground, and worshipped the Lord.

48 Also Jesus, Anus, Sarabias, Adinus, Jacubus, Sabateas, Auteas, Maianeas, and Calitas, Asrias, and Joazabdus, and Ananias, Biatas, the Levites, taught the law of the Lord, making them withal to understand it.

49 Then spake Attharates unto Esdras the chief priest. and reader, and to the Levites that taught the multitude, even to all, saying,

50 This day is holy unto the Lord; (for they all wept when they heard the law:)

51 Go then, and eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send part to them that have nothing;

52 For this day is holy unto the Lord: and be not sorrowful; for the Lord will bring you to honour.

53 So the Levites published all things to the people, saying, This day is holy to the Lord; be not sorrowful.

54 Then went they their way, every one to eat and drink, and make merry, and to give part to them that had nothing, and to make great cheer;

55 Because they understood the words wherein they were instructed, and for the which they had been assembled.
