1 Εκείνη την ημέρα η Δεβόρα και ο Βαράκ, γιος του Αβινωάμ, τραγούδησαν αυτόν τον ύμνο:

2 Τον Κύριο δοξολογήστε,

γιατί καλοί αρχηγοί δίνουν στον Ισραήλ προστάγματα,

γιατί ο λαός πρόθυμος έτρεξε να πολεμήσει.

3 Ακούστε, βασιλιάδες!

Δώστε, ηγεμόνες, προσοχή!

Εγώ στον Κύριο θα τραγουδήσω·

στον Κύριο θα ψάλω,

στο Θεό του Ισραήλ:

4 Κύριε, όταν έβγαινες από το όρος Σηείρ,

όταν ξεκίναγες απ’ της Εδώμ τους κάμπους,

έτρεμε η γη κι οι ουρανοί ταράζονταν

και στάλαζαν τα σύννεφα νερό.

5 Έτρεμαν τα βουνά μπροστά στον Κύριο,

–στον Κύριο του Σινά–

μπρος στου Κυρίου την παρουσία, του Θεού του Ισραήλ.

6 Στις μέρες του Σαμγάρ, γιου του Ανάθ,

στις μέρες της Ιαήλ, τα καραβάνια εξαφανίστηκαν,

κι όσοι ταξίδευαν παίρνανε πλάγιους δρόμους.

7 Αρχηγοί δεν υπήρχαν πια·

καθόλου πια αρχηγοί στου Ισραήλ τη χώρα·

ώσπου εμφανίστηκες εσύ, Δεβόρα,

ώσπου εσύ εμφανίστηκες,

μητέρα για τον Ισραήλ.

8 Νέους διαλέξανε θεούς,

θεούς που δεν τους γνώριζαν.

Σε σαράντα χιλιάδες άντρες στον Ισραήλ

ζήτημα αν εύρισκες μια ασπίδα ή ένα ακόντιο.

9 Είν’ η καρδιά μου με του Ισραήλ τους αρχηγούς,

μ’ εκείνους από τον λαό,

που πρόθυμοι στον πόλεμο ετρέξαν.

Τον Κύριο δοξολογήστε!

10 Εσείς που ιππεύετε στις άσπρες γαϊδουρίτσες,*Εκείνη την εποχή οι γαϊδουρίτσες ήταν τα υποζύγια των αρχόντων και γενικά των επιφανών προσώπων.

εσείς που πάνω σε χαλιά καθόσαστε,

κι εσείς που μες στους δρόμους περπατάτε,

σκεφτείτε το.

11 Ακούτε! Φλύαρα πλήθη στα πηγάδια ολόγυρα

διηγούνται του Κυρίου τους θριάμβους,

τις νίκες του λαού του Ισραήλ.

Τότε κατέβη του Κυρίου ο λαός στις πύλες.

12 Εμπρός, εμπρός Δεβόρα!

Εμπρός, εμπρός, τραγούδησε.

Σήκω, Βαράκ, γιε του Αβινωάμ

και ξαναφέρε πίσω τους αιχμαλώτους σου.

13 Τότε πολέμησε ωσάν γενναίος ο Ισραήλ.

Του Κυρίου ο λαός πολέμησαν σαν ήρωες.

14 Οι αρχηγοί του Εφραΐμ βρίσκονται στην πεδιάδα,

πίσω του ο Βενιαμίν με το λαό του.

Και κατεβήκαν αρχηγοί

απ’ τη συγγένεια του Μαχείρ

κι απ’ τη φυλή του Ζαβουλών ακούραστοι αξιωματούχοι.

15 Και του Ισσάχαρ οι αρχηγοί ήταν μαζί με τη Δεβόρα.

Και όπως ο Ισσάχαρ, έτσι και ο Βαράκ

όρμησε να τον κυνηγάει στην πεδιάδα.

Μα στις τάξεις του Ρουβήν μεγάλες συζητήσεις γίνονταν.

16 Γιατί καθόσουν στα μαντριά, Ρουβήν,

ν’ ακούς που τα κοπάδια τους φωνάζουν οι βοσκοί;

Στις τάξεις του Ρουβήν μεγάλες συζητήσεις γίνονταν.*Οι συγγένειες των Ρουβηνιτών δεν αποφάσισαν τελικά να πάρουν μέρος στον πόλεμο.

17 Ο Γαλαάδ έμεινε πέρα απ’ τον Ιορδάνη·

ο Δαν γιατί έχει τα πλοία μόνιμη κατοικία του;

Ο Ασήρ καθόταν στην ακρογιαλιά,

κι αναπαυόταν στα λιμάνια του.*Στη Γαλαάδ, ανατολικά του Ιορδάνη είχαν εγκατασταθεί οι φυλές Ρουβήν, Γαδ και η μισή φυλή Μανασσή (Αρ κεφ. 32). Οι Δανίτες πιθανόν δούλευαν ως ναυτικοί στα φοινικικά πλοία. Οι Ασηρίτες ήταν εγκατεστημένοι στις παράλιες πεδιάδες, βορείως του όρους Κάρμηλος.

18 Ο Ζαβουλών είναι λαός που με το θάνατο έπαιξε

κι ο Νεφθαλί το ίδιο,

στων μαχών τα πεδία.

19 Ήρθαν οι βασιλιάδες και πολέμησαν,

πολέμησαν οι Χαναναίοι βασιλιάδες

στην πολιτεία Τανάχ, κοντά στης Μεγιδδώ τα κεφαλάρια,

αλλά δεν πήραν ασημένια λάφυρα.

20 Από τον ουρανό πολέμησαν τ’ αστέρια,

από τις τροχιές τους πολέμησαν τον Σίσερα.

21 Τους πήρε το ποτάμι του Κισών,

ο Κισών, το πανάρχαιο ποτάμι.

Περπάτησε με δύναμη, ψυχή μου!

22 Τότε μ’ ορμή χτυπήσαν των αλόγων οι οπλές

καθώς καλπάζουν, φεύγοντας οι καβαλάρηδες.

23 «Καταραστείτε τη Μηρώζ»,*Μηρώζ. Πόλη στην περιοχή της φυλής Νεφθαλί.

είπε ο άγγελος Κυρίου·

«σκληρά καταραστείτε τους κατοίκους της!

Δεν ήρθαν σε βοήθεια του Κυρίου,

δεν πολεμήσανε μαζί με τους γενναίους του ήρωες».

24 Η πιο ευλογημένη ας είναι απ’ τις γυναίκες η Ιαήλ,

του Χέβερ η γυναίκα, του Κεναίου.

Απ’ τις γυναίκες όλες που κατοικούνε σε σκηνές,

αυτή ας είν’ η πιο ευλογημένη.

25 Νερό της ζήτησε ο Σίσερα, κι εκείνη γάλα του ’δωσε·

γάλα ολόπαχο του πρόσφερε μες σε πολύτιμη γαβάθα.

26 Το ’να της χέρι άδραξε τον πάσσαλο

και το δεξί της το σφυρί των εργατών.

Και χτύπησε το Σίσερα, το κεφάλι του το κομμάτιασε·

του τρύπησε απ’ άκρη σ’ άκρη το μηλίγγι.

27 Στα πόδια της αυτός σωριάστηκε,

έπεσε κι εκεί έμεινε.

Μπροστά στα πόδια της σωριάστηκε, έπεσε κάτω.

’Κει που σωριάστηκε, εκεί έμεινε νεκρός.

28 Κοίταζε η μαύρη η μάνα του από το παραθύρι

κι εθρηνολόγα του Σίσερα η μάνα

μέσ’ από το καφασωτό:

«Γιατί αργεί να ’ρθεί η άμαξά του;

Γιατί οι τροχοί του τόσο αργά κυλάνε;»

29 Από τις πριγκιπέσσες της η πιο σοφή τής απαντά,

κι αυτή το ξαναλέει στον εαυτό της:

30 «Σίγουρα, βρήκαν λάφυρα και τα μοιράζονται.

Μια, δυο κοπέλες σκλάβες για κάθε μαχητή,

λάφυρα από υφάσματα πολύχρωμα

για το Σίσερα κεντημένα,

μαντήλι πλουμιστό,

κι από τις δυο του όψεις κεντημένο,

για το λαιμό του νικητή».

31 Έτσι να καταστρέφονται

όλοι οι εχθροί σου, Κύριε·

κι αυτοί που σ’ αγαπούν ας λάμπουνε

καθώς ο ήλιος που ανατέλλει.

Και η χώρα ησύχασε για σαράντα χρόνια.

6 In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, and the travellers walked through byways.*5.6 travellers: Heb. walkers of paths*5.6 byways: Heb. crooked ways 7 The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until that I Deborah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel. 8 They chose new gods; then was war in the gates: was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel? 9 My heart is toward the governors of Israel, that offered themselves willingly among the people. 12 Awake, awake, Deborah: awake, awake, utter a song: arise, Barak, and lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam. 13 Then he made him that remaineth have dominion over the nobles among the people: the LORD made me have dominion over the mighty. 14 Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.*5.14 handle: Heb. draw with 15 And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; even Issachar, and also Barak: he was sent on foot into the valley. 24 Blessed above women shall Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite be, blessed shall she be above women in the tent. 25 He asked water, and she gave him milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly dish. 26 She put her hand to the nail, and her right hand to the workmen’s hammer; and with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote off his head, when she had pierced and stricken through his temples.*5.26 with…: Heb. she hammered 27 At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay down: at her feet he bowed, he fell: where he bowed, there he fell down dead.*5.27 At: Heb.
