1 Οι Ισραηλίτες δυσαρέστησαν πάλι τον Κύριο με τις πράξεις τους κι ο Κύριος τους παρέδωσε στους Μαδιανίτες για εφτά χρόνια. 2 Οι Μαδιανίτες καταπίεζαν σκληρά τους Ισραηλίτες· κι αυτοί για να προστατεύονται έφτιαξαν κρησφύγετα πάνω στα βουνά, σπηλιές και οχυρά. 3 Όποτε οι Ισραηλίτες έσπερναν, οι Μαδιανίτες, οι Αμαληκίτες και διάφοροι νομάδες της Ανατολής έκαναν επιδρομές εναντίον τους. 4 Στρατοπέδευαν στα χωράφια τους και κατέστρεφαν τις καλλιέργειες ως την είσοδο της Γάζας περίπου· επίσης δεν άφηναν στους Ισραηλίτες ούτε πρόβατα ούτε βόδια ούτε γαϊδούρια. 5 Έρχονταν με τα κοπάδια τους και τις σκηνές τους σαν ακρίδες πολυάριθμες· αναρίθμητοι αυτοί και οι καμήλες τους έμπαιναν στη χώρα και την κατέστρεφαν.

6,7 Εξαιτίας, λοιπόν, των Μαδιανιτών οι Ισραηλίτες είχαν τρομερά εξαθλιωθεί και επικαλέστηκαν τον Κύριο. Κι όταν επικαλέστηκαν τον Κύριο, 8 εκείνος τους έστειλε έναν προφήτη, ο οποίος τους είπε: «Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέει: "εγώ σας έβγαλα από την Αίγυπτο, τη χώρα της δουλείας, 9 σας ελευθέρωσα από την εξουσία των Αιγυπτίων και των άλλων καταπιεστών σας· έδιωξα τους εχθρούς σας στο πέρασμά σας κι έδωσα σ’ εσάς τη χώρα τους. 10 Και σας είπα: Εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας. Μη λατρέψετε τους θεούς των Αμορραίων, στων οποίων τη χώρα έχετε εγκατασταθεί. Αλλά εσείς δε με υπακούσατε"».

11 Τότε ήρθε ο άγγελος του Κυρίου στο χωριό Οφρά και κάθισε κάτω από τη βελανιδιά που ανήκει στον Ιωάς της συγγένειας του Αβιέζερ.*Η συγγένεια του Αβιέζερ ή Αχιέζερ ανήκει στη φυλή Μανασσή (Ιησ 17:2). Ο γιος του Ιωάς, ο Γεδεών, κοπάνιζε σιτάρι μέσα στο πατητήρι για να το κρύψει από τους Μαδιανίτες. 12 Ο άγγελος του Κυρίου εμφανίστηκε στο Γεδεών και του είπε: «Ο Κύριος είναι μαζί σου, γενναίε πολεμιστή».

13 Ο Γεδεών του απάντησε: «Αχ, κύριέ μου, αν ο Κύριος είναι μαζί μας, γιατί μας βρήκαν όλα αυτά τα δεινά; Και πού είναι εκείνα τα θαυμαστά του έργα που μας διηγούνταν οι πατέρες μας και μας έλεγαν πως ο Κύριος τους είχε βγάλει από την Αίγυπτο; Τώρα ο Κύριος μας εγκατέλειψε και μας έχει παραδώσει στους Μαδιανίτες».

14 Τότε ο Κύριος στράφηκε σ’ αυτόν και του είπε: «Μ’ αυτή τη δύναμη που έχεις, πήγαινε, και θα ελευθερώσεις τον Ισραήλ από τους Μαδιανίτες. Εγώ σε στέλνω».

15 «Μα πώς, κύριέ μου, θα γλιτώσω εγώ τον Ισραήλ;» αποκρίθηκε ο Γεδεών. Η συγγένειά μου είναι η πιο ταπεινή ανάμεσα στη φυλή Μανασσή κι εγώ ο πιο μικρός της οικογένειας του πατέρα μου».

16 Τότε του είπε ο Κύριος: «Ναι, αλλά εγώ θα είμαι μαζί σου, και θα νικήσεις τους Μαδιανίτες σαν να ’ταν ένας μόνον άνθρωπος».

17 Ο Γεδεών του απάντησε: «Λοιπόν: Αν έχω την εύνοιά σου, δώσε μου ένα σημάδι ότι εσύ που μιλάς μαζί μου είσαι ο Κύριος. 18 Μη φύγεις σε παρακαλώ από ’δω, ώσπου να επιστρέψω· πάω να φέρω τη θυσία μου που θέλω να σου προσφέρω».

Κι εκείνος είπε: «Θα μείνω ώσπου να επιστρέψεις». 19 Ο Γεδεών πήγε κι ετοίμασε ένα κατσίκι βραστό κι έφτιαξε άζυμα ψωμιά μ’ ένα εφά αλεύρι. Έβαλε το κρέας σ’ ένα καλάθι και το ζουμί σε μια χύτρα, τα έφερε κάτω από τη βελανιδιά και τα πρόσφερε στον άγγελο του Κυρίου.

20 Ο άγγελος του Θεού τού είπε: «Πάρε το κρέας και τα άζυμα ψωμιά και βάλε τα σ’ εκείνο το βράχο και χύσε πάνω τους το ζουμί». Έτσι κι έκανε. 21 Ο άγγελος του Κυρίου άπλωσε το χέρι του και με την άκρη του ραβδιού του άγγιξε το κρέας και τα άζυμα ψωμιά. Και βγήκε φωτιά από το βράχο κι έκαψε εντελώς το κρέας και τα ψωμιά. Μετά ο άγγελος του Κυρίου έγινε άφαντος.

22 Τότε κατάλαβε ο Γεδεών ότι αυτός ήταν ο άγγελος του Κυρίου, και είπε: «Αχ, Κύριε Θεέ, τρομάζω, γιατί στ’ αλήθεια είδα τον άγγελο του Κυρίου πρόσωπο με πρόσωπο».

23 Κι ο Κύριος του απάντησε: «Ηρέμησε· μη φοβάσαι, δε θα πεθάνεις». 24 Ο Γεδεών έχτισε σ’ εκείνο το σημείο θυσιαστήριο στον Κύριο και το ονόμασε «Ιεοβά-Σαλόμ» (ο Κύριος είναι Ειρήνη). Το θυσιαστήριο σώζεται μέχρι σήμερα στην Οφρά, το χωριό της συγγένειας του Αβιέζερ.

25 Εκείνη τη νύχτα είπε ο Κύριος στο Γεδεών: «Πάρε τον εφτάχρονο, καλοθρεμμένο ταύρο του πατέρα σου, και κατάστρεψε το θυσιαστήριο του Βάαλ, που έχει χτίσει ο πατέρας σου και κομμάτιασε την ξύλινη λατρευτική στήλη που είναι δίπλα του. 26 Έπειτα χτίσε θυσιαστήριο στον Κύριο, το Θεό σου, στην κορυφή αυτού του βράχου, με στρώσεις λιθαριών, και πρόσφερε τον καλοθρεμμένο ταύρο ολοκαύτωμα με τα ξύλα της λατρευτικής στήλης που θα έχεις κομματιάσει».

27 Τότε ο Γεδεών πήρε δέκα από τους δούλους του, κι έκανε όπως του είπε ο Κύριος. Κι επειδή φοβόταν να το κάνει τη μέρα για να μην τον δουν από την οικογένεια του πατέρα του ή οι συμπολίτες του, το έκανε τη νύχτα.

28 Το πρωί σηκώθηκαν οι άντρες της πόλης και είδαν το θυσιαστήριο του Βάαλ γκρεμισμένο, την ξύλινη λατρευτική στήλη πλάι του κομματιασμένη, κι έναν ταύρο θυσιασμένο πάνω στο νεόκτιστο θυσιαστήριο. 29 Ρωτούσαν, λοιπόν, ο ένας τον άλλον: «Ποιος το ’κανε αυτό;» Ζήτησαν πληροφορίες, ερεύνησαν κι ανακάλυψαν πως ο Γεδεών, ο γιος του Ιωάς, το είχε κάνει. 30 Τότε πήγαν στον Ιωάς και του είπαν: «Βγάλε έξω το γιο σου να θανατωθεί, γιατί γκρέμισε το θυσιαστήριο του Βάαλ και κατακομμάτιασε την ξύλινη λατρευτική στήλη του».

31 Ο Ιωάς όμως απάντησε σ’ όλους αυτούς που είχαν ξεσηκωθεί εναντίον του: «Εσείς θ’ αγωνιστείτε για το Βάαλ; Εσείς θα τον βοηθήσετε; Όποιος αγωνιστεί γι’ αυτόν, θα έχει θανατωθεί ως αύριο το πρωί. Αλλά αν ο Βάαλ είναι πραγματικός θεός, ας πάρει εκδίκηση ο ίδιος για τον εαυτό του, αφού κάποιος του γκρέμισε το θυσιαστήριο».

32 Από τη μέρα εκείνη τον Γεδεών τον ονόμασαν «Ιερουβάαλ» (Ο Βάαλ ας πάρει Εκδίκηση), από τα λόγια που είχε πει ο Ιωάς: «Ας πάρει ο Βάαλ εκδίκηση για τον εαυτό του, αφού κάποιος του γκρέμισε το θυσιαστήριο».

33 Οι Μαδιανίτες, οι Αμαληκίτες και οι νομάδες της Ανατολής συνενώθηκαν, πέρασαν τον Ιορδάνη και στρατοπέδευσαν στην Κοιλάδα Ιζρεέλ. 34 Αλλά το Πνεύμα του Κυρίου εμψύχωσε το Γεδεών και σάλπισε με τη σάλπιγγα για να καλέσει τους άντρες της συγγένειας του Αβιέζερ να τον ακολουθήσουν. 35 Έστειλε και αγγελιοφόρους σ’ όλη τη φυλή Μανασσή και την κάλεσε κι αυτήν να τον ακολουθήσει. Έπειτα έστειλε αγγελιοφόρους στις φυλές Ασήρ, Ζαβουλών και Νεφθαλί, και οι άντρες τους ήρθαν κι ενώθηκαν μαζί του.

36 Τότε ο Γεδεών είπε στο Θεό: «Αν θέλεις πράγματι να χρησιμοποιήσεις εμένα για να γλιτώσεις τους Ισραηλίτες, όπως είπες, 37 κοίτα: εγώ θα βάλω στο αλώνι μια τουλούπα μαλλί από πρόβατα. Αν τη νύχτα πέσει η δροσιά μονάχα πάνω στο μαλλί, και το έδαφος τριγύρω μείνει στεγνό, τότε θα καταλάβω ότι θα με χρησιμοποιήσεις για να γλιτώσεις τον Ισραήλ, όπως είπες». 38 Έτσι κι έγινε. Την άλλη μέρα το πρωί, όταν ο Γεδεών σηκώθηκε κι έστιψε το μαλλί, βγήκε τόση δροσιά, ώστε γέμισε μια χύτρα νερό.

39 Τότε ο Γεδεών είπε στο Θεό: «Μην οργιστείς εναντίον μου, αν σου ζητήσω κάτι για τελευταία φορά· ας δοκιμάσω, σε παρακαλώ, μονάχα μια φορά ακόμα με το μαλλί. Τώρα, λοιπόν, θέλω να μείνει μόνο το μαλλί στεγνό και να πέσει δροσιά στο έδαφος τριγύρω». 40 Έτσι κι έκανε ο Θεός τη νύχτα εκείνη. Μόνο το μαλλί έμεινε στεγνό, ενώ στο έδαφος τριγύρω έπεσε δροσιά.

1 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years. 2 And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.*6.2 prevailed: Heb. was strong 3 And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them; 4 And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.*6.4 sheep: or goat 5 For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it. 6 And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.

7 And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites, 8 That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;*6.8 a prophet: Heb. a man a prophet 9 And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land; 10 And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.

11 And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abi-ezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.*6.11 Gideon: Gr. Gedeon*6.11 to hide…: Heb. to cause it to flee 12 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour. 13 And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites. 14 And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee? 15 And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.*6.15 my family…: Heb. my thousand is the meanest 16 And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man. 17 And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me. 18 Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. 19 And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.*6.19 a kid: Heb. a kid of the goats 20 And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

21 Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight. 22 And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord GOD! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face. 23 And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die. 24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.*6.24 Jehovah-shalom: that is, The LORD send peace

25 And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:*6.25 even: or, and 26 And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.*6.26 rock: Heb. strong place*6.26 in the ordered…: or, in an orderly manner 27 Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

28 And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built. 29 And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing. 30 Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it. 31 And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar. 32 Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.*6.32 Jerubbaal: that is, Let Baal plead*6.32 Jerubbesheth: that is, Let the shameful thing plead

33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel. 34 But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abi-ezer was gathered after him.*6.34 came…: Heb. clothed*6.34 gathered: Heb. called 35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.*6.35 gathered: Heb. called

36 And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said, 37 Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said. 38 And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water. 39 And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew. 40 And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
