1 Ο Ιεφθάε, ο Γαλααδίτης, ήταν γενναίος πολεμιστής. Ήταν γιος πόρνης. Πατέρας του ήταν ο Γαλαάδ. 2 Η νόμιμη γυναίκα του Γαλαάδ του είχε γεννήσει γιους, οι οποίοι όταν μεγάλωσαν, έδιωξαν τον Ιεφθάε και του είπαν: «Εσύ δεν έχεις μερίδιο στην περιουσία του πατέρα μας, γιατί είσαι γιος άλλης γυναίκας». 3 Τότε έφυγε ο Ιεφθάε μακριά απ’ τους αδερφούς του κι εγκαταστάθηκε στη χώρα Τωβ.*Η χώρα Τώβ βρισκόταν στο βόρειο άκρο της Γαλαάδ, 60 χλμ. ανατολικά της λίμνης Γεννησαρέτ. Εκεί μάζεψε γύρω του μερικούς τυχοδιώκτες, οι οποίοι έβγαιναν μαζί του στις επιδρομές που έκανε.

4 Ύστερα από λίγον καιρό οι Αμμωνίτες έκαναν πόλεμο εναντίον του Ισραήλ. 5 Κατά τη διάρκεια του πολέμου, οι πρεσβύτεροι της Γαλαάδ πήγαν να πάρουν τον Ιεφθάε από την Τωβ. 6 «Έλα», του είπαν, «να γίνεις αρχηγός μας, για να πολεμήσουμε εναντίον των Αμμωνιτών». 7 Αλλά ο Ιεφθάε τους είπε: «Εσείς δεν είστε εκείνοι που με μισήσατε και με διώξατε από το σπίτι του πατέρα μου; Γιατί ήρθατε σ’ εμένα τώρα που έχετε ανάγκη;»

8 Αυτοί του απάντησαν: «Να, λοιπόν, γιατί ερχόμαστε τώρα σ’ εσένα: για να έρθεις μαζί μας και να πολεμήσεις τους Αμμωνίτες, και να γίνεις αρχηγός μας και αρχηγός όλων των κατοίκων της Γαλαάδ». 9 Ο Ιεφθάε τους είπε: «Αν με φέρετε πίσω για να πολεμήσω τους Αμμωνίτες κι ο Κύριος τους παραδώσει σ’ εμένα, είναι βέβαιο πως θα γίνω αρχηγός σας;» 10 Οι πρεσβύτεροι του απάντησαν: «Ο Κύριος ας είναι μάρτυρας ανάμεσά μας, ότι οπωσδήποτε θα κάνουμε ό,τι είπες».

11 Τότε ο Ιεφθάε έφυγε μαζί τους και ο λαός τον έκανε αρχηγό και ηγεμόνα του. Και επανέλαβε ο Ιεφθάε όλα τα λόγια της συμφωνίας ενώπιον του Κυρίου στη Μισπά.

12 Ο Ιεφθάε έστειλε αγγελιοφόρο στο βασιλιά των Αμμωνιτών και του έλεγε: «Τι συμβαίνει ανάμεσα σ’ εμένα και σ’ εσένα κι ήρθες στη χώρα μου να πολεμήσεις εναντίον μου;» 13 Ο βασιλιάς των Αμμωνιτών απάντησε στους αγγελιοφόρους του Ιεφθάε: «Όταν οι Ισραηλίτες βγήκαν από την Αίγυπτο, κατέλαβαν τη χώρα μου, από την κοιλάδα Αρνών ως το χείμαρρο Ιαββόκ και ως τον Ιορδάνη. Τώρα λοιπόν δώστε πίσω ειρηνικά όλα αυτά τα εδάφη».

14 Ο Ιεφθάε έστειλε πάλι αγγελιοφόρους στο βασιλιά των Αμμωνιτών, 15 για να του πουν εκ μέρους του: «Δεν κατέλαβαν οι Ισραηλίτες τα εδάφη των Μωαβιτών ούτε των Αμμωνιτών. 16 Όταν βγήκαν από την Αίγυπτο, πέρασαν μέσα από την έρημο ως την Ερυθρά Θάλασσα κι έφτασαν στην Κάδης. 17 Τότε έστειλαν αγγελιοφόρους στο βασιλιά της Εδώμ, και του είπαν: "άφησέ μας, σε παρακαλούμε, να περάσουμε μέσα από τη χώρα σου". Αλλά εκείνος δεν τους άκουσε. Έστειλαν και στο βασιλιά της Μωάβ αγγελιοφόρους, αλλά ούτ’ εκείνος θέλησε να τους αφήσει. Έτσι οι Ισραηλίτες έμειναν στην Κάδης. 18 Στη συνέχεια πέρασαν μέσα από την έρημο, παρέκαμψαν τις χώρες της Εδώμ και της Μωάβ κι έφτασαν ανατολικά της Μωάβ και στρατοπέδευσαν από την άλλη όχθη του ποταμού Αρνών· δεν πέρασαν όμως μέσα από τη Μωάβ, αφού ο Αρνών αποτελεί το σύνορό της. 19 Τότε οι Ισραηλίτες έστειλαν αγγελιοφόρους στο Σιχόν, βασιλιά των Αμορραίων, που βασίλευε στην Εσεβών, και του είπαν: "άφησέ μας σε παρακαλούμε, να περάσουμε μέσα από τη χώρα σου για να πάμε στον τόπο μας". 20 Αλλά ο Σιχόν δεν εμπιστεύτηκε τους Ισραηλίτες να τους αφήσει να περάσουν μέσ’ από τη χώρα του. Μάζεψε όλο το στρατό του και στρατοπέδευσε στην Ιασά και πολέμησε εναντίον τους. 21 Τότε ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, παρέδωσε το Σιχόν και όλο τον στρατό του στους Ισραηλίτες. Τον νίκησαν, και κυρίεψαν όλη την περιοχή όπου κατοικούσαν οι Αμορραίοι, 22 από την κοιλάδα Αρνών ως το χείμαρρο Ιαββόκ και από την έρημο ως τον Ιορδάνη. 23 Ήταν ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, που έδιωξε τους Αμορραίους μπροστά από το λαό του· κι εσύ τώρα θέλεις να μας πάρεις την ιδιοκτησία μας; 24 Μήπως εσύ δεν έχεις στην κατοχή σου τη χώρα που σου έδωσε ο Χεμώς, ο θεός σου; Το ίδιο κι εμείς έχουμε στην ιδιοκτησία μας ό,τι μας έδωσε ο Κύριος, ο Θεός μας. 25 Μήπως νομίζεις ότι εσύ είσαι καλύτερος από το Βαλάκ, γιο του Σιππώρ και βασιλιά της Μωάβ; Αλλά εκείνος δε φιλονίκησε ποτέ με τους Ισραηλίτες ούτε πολέμησε ποτέ εναντίον τους. 26 Εδώ και τριακόσια χρόνια οι Ισραηλίτες κατοικούν στην Εσεβών, στην Αρώρ και στα περίχωρά τους, καθώς και σ’ όλες τις πόλεις πλάι στις όχθες του Αρνών. Γιατί δεν τους τις πήρατε όλον αυτό τον καιρό; 27 Εγώ δε σου έκανα κανένα κακό, ενώ εσύ μου κάνεις κακό, πολεμώντας εναντίον μου. Ο Κύριος, ο κριτής όλων, ας αποφασίσει σήμερα ανάμεσα στους Ισραηλίτες και στους Αμμωνίτες!»

28 Ο βασιλιάς των Αμμωνιτών, όμως, δεν έδωσε σημασία στα λόγια που του διαβίβασε ο Ιεφθάε. 29 Τότε ήρθε το Πνεύμα του Κυρίου στον Ιεφθάε κι αυτός πέρασε μέσα από τη Γαλαάδ και την περιοχή της φυλής Μανασσή· έφτασε στη Μισπά της Γαλαάδ και από ’κει πέρασε στα εδάφη των Αμμωνιτών.

30 Κι έκανε τάμα ο Ιεφθάε στον Κύριο: «Αν πράγματι παραδώσεις τους Αμμωνίτες στην εξουσία μου», του είπε, 31 «τότε όποιος βγει πρώτος από την πόρτα του σπιτιού μου να με προϋπαντήσει, όταν με το καλό θα επιστρέφω από τον πόλεμο των Αμμωνιτών, αυτός θ’ ανήκει σ’ εσένα, Κύριε, και θα σου τον προσφέρω ολοκαύτωμα».

32 Έτσι ο Ιεφθάε πέρασε τα σύνορα για να πολεμήσει τους Αμμωνίτες κι ο Κύριος τους παρέδωσε σ’ αυτόν. 33 Τους χτύπησε από την Αρώρ ως τη Μινίθ, περιοχή με είκοσι πόλεις, κι ως την Αβέλ-Κεραμίμ. Η ήττα τους ήταν πολύ μεγάλη· έτσι οι Αμμωνίτες έγιναν υποτελείς στους Ισραηλίτες.

34 Όταν ο Ιεφθάε γυρνούσε στο σπίτι του, στη Μισπά, βγήκε η κόρη του να τον προϋπαντήσει με τύμπανα και με χορούς. Ήταν το μοναχοπαίδι του. Εκτός απ’ αυτήν δεν είχε ούτε γιο ούτε άλλη κόρη. 35 Όταν την είδε ο Ιεφθάε έσχισε μ’ απόγνωση τα ρούχα του και είπε: «Αχ, κόρη μου, με βύθισες στη δυστυχία! Πόση θλίψη μού ’φερες κι εσύ! Έχω δεσμευτεί με λόγο ενώπιον του Κυρίου και δεν μπορώ ν’ ανακαλέσω την υπόσχεσή μου».

36 Εκείνη αποκρίθηκε: «Πατέρα μου, αν έδωσες λόγο στον Κύριο, κάνε για μένα ό,τι του υποσχέθηκες, αφού ο Κύριος εκδικήθηκε για σένα τους εχθρούς σου, τους Αμμωνίτες». 37 Είπε ακόμα στον πατέρα της: «Κάνε μου μόνο αυτή τη χάρη: άφησέ με δυο μήνες, να πάω ν’ ανέβω στα βουνά και να κλάψω την παρθενία μου μαζί με τις φίλες μου». 38 Εκείνος της είπε: «Πήγαινε». Έτσι την έστειλε για δυο μήνες μαζί με τις φίλες της και πήγαν πάνω στα βουνά να κλάψουν την παρθενία της. 39 Όταν τέλειωσαν οι δύο μήνες, γύρισε στον πατέρα της κι αυτός εκπλήρωσε με την κόρη του το τάξιμο που είχε κάνει. Η κοπέλα δεν είχε γνωρίσει άντρα. Από τότε έγινε έθιμο στο λαό Ισραήλ, 40 να πηγαίνουν κάθε χρόνο οι κόρες των Ισραηλιτών και να κλαίνε την κόρη του Ιεφθάε, του Γαλααδίτη, για τέσσερις μέρες.

4 And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.*11.4 in process…: Heb. after days 5 And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob: 6 And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon. 7 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress? 8 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead. 9 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head? 10 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.*11.10 witness…: Heb. the hearer between us 11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.

12 And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land? 13 And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably. 14 And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon: 15 And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon: 16 But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh; 17 Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh. 18 Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab. 19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place. 20 But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. 21 And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country. 22 And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan. 23 So now the LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it? 24 Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess. 25 And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them, 26 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time? 27 Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon. 28 Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon. 30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, 31 Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.*11.31 whatsoever…: Heb. that which cometh forth, which shall come forth*11.31 and…: or, or I will offer it, etc

32 So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands. 33 And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. 34 And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.*11.34 beside…: or, he had not of his own either son or daughter: Heb. of himself 35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back. 36 And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon. 37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.*11.37 go up…: Heb. go and go down 38 And he said, Go.
