1 Ο Σαούλ είχε σκοτωθεί, όταν ο Δαβίδ, μετά τη νίκη του εναντίον των Αμαληκιτών, γύρισε στη Σικλάγ. Πέρασαν δύο μέρες. 2 Την τρίτη μέρα, έφτασε ένας νέος από το στρατόπεδο του Σαούλ, με σχισμένα τα ρούχα του και με χώμα πάνω στο κεφάλι του. Όταν πλησίασε το Δαβίδ, έπεσε στη γη και προσκύνησε. 3 Ο Δαβίδ τον ρώτησε: «Από πού έρχεσαι;» Εκείνος του απάντησε: «Έφυγα από το ισραηλιτικό στρατόπεδο». 4 «Πες μου, τι έγινε, λοιπόν», είπε ο Δαβίδ. Και εκείνος απάντησε: «Ο στρατός τράπηκε σε φυγή στη διάρκεια της μάχης και σκοτώθηκαν πολλοί. Σκοτώθηκε κι ο Σαούλ και ο Ιωνάθαν, ο γιος του».

5 Ο Δαβίδ τον ρώτησε πάλι: «Πώς το ξέρεις ότι σκοτώθηκαν ο Σαούλ κι ο Ιωνάθαν;» 6 «Βρέθηκα τυχαία στο όρος Γελβουέ», είπε ο νεαρός. «Ο Σαούλ ήταν πεσμένος πάνω στο ξίφος του, ενώ οι άμαξες και το ιππικό των εχθρών τον πλησίαζαν όλο και περισσότερο. 7 Γύρισε τότε πίσω του, με είδε και μου φώναξε· κι εγώ του απάντησα: "ορίστε". 8 Με ρώτησε ποιος είμαι κι εγώ του απάντησα: "είμαι ένας Αμαληκίτης". 9 Τότε μου είπε: "έλα, σε παρακαλώ, κι αποτέλειωσέ με, γιατί υποφέρω, αλλά η ζωή δε λέει να φύγει από μέσα μου!"

10 »Πλησίασα, λοιπόν, και τον σκότωσα, γιατί κατάλαβα ότι δε θα μπορούσε να ζήσει μετά την ήττα του. Πήρα όμως το στέμμα από το κεφάλι του και το βραχιόλι από το μπράτσο του και τα έφερα εδώ σ’ εσένα, κύριέ μου».

11 Τότε ο Δαβίδ έσκισε με απόγνωση τα ρούχα του κι όλοι οι άντρες του έκαναν το ίδιο. 12 Θρήνησαν, έκλαψαν και νήστεψαν ως το βράδυ για το Σαούλ και για τον Ιωνάθαν, το γιο του, και για όσους από το λαό του Κυρίου, τους Ισραηλίτες, είχαν σκοτωθεί στη μάχη.

13 Ο Δαβίδ ρώτησε το νέο που του έφερε την αγγελία: «Από πού είσαι εσύ;» «Είμαι γιος ενός πάροικου Αμαληκίτη», απάντησε. 14 «Και δε φοβήθηκες ν’ απλώσεις το χέρι σου και να σκοτώσεις τον εκλεκτό του Κυρίου;» του είπε ο Δαβίδ. 15 Τότε φώναξε έναν από τους άντρες του και τον πρόσταξε: «Έλα και σκότωσέ τον». Εκείνος τον χτύπησε και τον σκότωσε, 16 ενώ ο Δαβίδ έλεγε στον Αμαληκίτη: «Δική σου είναι η ευθύνη, γιατί εσύ ο ίδιος ομολόγησες ότι σκότωσες τον εκλεκτό του Κυρίου».

17 Ο Δαβίδ συνέθεσε τον ακόλουθο θρήνο για το Σαούλ και το γιο του τον Ιωνάθαν, 18 και διέταξε να τον διδάξουν στο λαό του Ιούδα. Είναι γραμμένος στο βιβλίο του Ιασάρ.*Βλ. υποσ. εις Ιησ 10:13.

19 «Οι εκλεκτοί σου, Ισραήλ, νεκροί

κείτονται πάνω στα υψώματα!

Πώς έπεσαν οι δυνατοί!

20 »Μην το αναγγείλετε στη Γαθ,

και μην το διαλαλήσετε στους δρόμους της Ασκάλωνας,

των Φιλισταίων για να μη χαρούν οι κόρες,

απ’ τη χαρά τους να μην αλαλάξουν των απερίτμητων οι θυγατέρες!

21 Χωρίς δροσιά να μείνετε βουνά της Γελβουέ,

χωρίς βροχή

και δίχως τα χωράφια στις πλαγιές σας,

τις απαρχές που δίνουν των καρπών.

Γιατ’ είναι εκεί που τις ασπίδες των ηρώων τις ατίμασαν

και την ασπίδα του Σαούλ,

σαν να μην είχε ποτέ χρισθεί με λάδι.

22 Χωρίς το αίμα των εχθρών

το βέλος του Ιωνάθαν δεν επέστρεφε,

ούτε το ξίφος του Σαούλ χωρίς το λίπος των γενναίων.

23 Αγαπημένοι κι αξιολάτρευτοι, ο Σαούλ κι ο Ιωνάθαν!

Ούτε στη ζωή ούτε στο θάνατο χωρίστηκαν.

Πιο γρήγοροι κι απ’ τους αετούς,

πιο δυνατοί κι απ’ τα λιοντάρια.

24 Κορίτσια του Ισραήλ, θρηνήστε το Σαούλ,

που μες στα κόκκινα υπέροχα σας έντυνε

και με χρυσά σάς πλούμιζε στολίδια.

25 Πώς έπεσαν οι ήρωες στη μάχη!

Ιωνάθαν, τώρα κείτεσαι νεκρός πάνω στα υψώματα.

26 Ιωνάθαν, αδερφέ μου, για σένα πόσος πόνος στην καρδιά!

Ήσουν ο πιο καλός μου φίλος.

Η αγάπη σου για μένα ήταν θαυμάσια,

καλύτερη κι απ’ την αγάπη των γυναικών.

27 Πώς έπεσαν οι ήρωες

και χάθηκαν τα όπλα του πολέμου!»

1 Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag; 2 It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance. 3 And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped. 4 And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.*1.4 How…: Heb. And I answered him, I am an Amalekite. 9 He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me.*1.9 anguish…: or, my coat of mail (or, my embroidered coat) hindereth me, that my, etc 10 So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.

11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him: 12 And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

13 And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite. 14 And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the LORD’s anointed? 15 And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died. 16 And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD’s anointed.

17 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son: 18 (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)*1.18 of Jasher: or, of the upright 19 The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen! 20 Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph. 21 Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil. 22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty. 23 Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.*1.23 pleasant: or, sweet 24 Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel. 25 How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places. 26 I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women. 27 How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!
