1 Τότε ο βασιλιάς ταράχτηκε.*Σε ορισμένες μετ. οι στ. 19:1-44 αριθμούνται ως 18:33–19:43. Ανέβηκε στο δωμάτιο πάνω από την πύλη κι έκλαιγε. Βημάτιζε κι έλεγε: «Γιε μου Αβεσσαλώμ! Γιε μου, γιε μου Αβεσσαλώμ! Μακάρι να είχα σκοτωθεί εγώ αντί για σένα, Αβεσσαλώμ, γιε μου, γιε μου!»

2 Ήρθαν κι έφεραν την είδηση στον Ιωάβ ότι ο βασιλιάς κλαίει και πενθεί για τον Αβεσσαλώμ. 3 Εκείνη την ημέρα η νίκη είχε μεταβληθεί σε πένθος σ’ όλον το λαό, γιατί όλοι άκουγαν να λέγεται ότι ο βασιλιάς ήταν καταλυπημένος για το γιο του. 4 Την ίδια μέρα ο στρατός μπήκε στην πόλη κρυφά, σαν ντροπιασμένος που είχε εγκαταλείψει τη μάχη.

5 Ο βασιλιάς είχε το πρόσωπό του σκεπασμένο και συνέχιζε να φωνάζει: «Γιε μου, Αβεσσαλώμ! Αβεσσαλώμ, γιε μου, γιε μου!» 6 Ο Ιωάβ μπήκε στον κοιτώνα του βασιλιά και του είπε: «Σήμερα ντρόπιασες όλους τους στρατιώτες σου, που έσωσαν τη ζωή σου και τη ζωή των γιων σου, των θυγατέρων σου, των γυναικών σου και των παλλακίδων σου. 7 Αγαπάς εκείνους που σε μισούν και μισείς εκείνους που σ’ αγαπούν. Σήμερα απέδειξες ότι δεν εκτιμάς ούτε το στρατό σου ούτε τους αρχηγούς του. Τώρα καταλαβαίνω πως αν ο Αβεσσαλώμ ήταν ζωντανός και όλοι εμείς νεκροί, αυτό θα σ’ ευχαριστούσε. 8 Τώρα λοιπόν σήκω, βγες και μίλησε φιλικά στους στρατιώτες σου. Ορκίζομαι στον Κύριο ότι αν δε βγεις, κανείς δε θα μείνει αυτή τη νύχτα μαζί σου· και το κακό που θα πάθεις θα είναι μεγαλύτερο απ’ όλες τις συμφορές που σ’ έχουν βρεί, από τα νιάτα σου μέχρι σήμερα».

9 Τότε σηκώθηκε ο βασιλιάς και κάθισε στην πύλη της πόλης. Όταν αναγγέλθηκε στο στρατό ότι ο βασιλιάς καθόταν στην πύλη, συγκεντρώθηκαν όλοι οι στρατιώτες μπροστά στον βασιλιά. Στο μεταξύ οι Ισραηλίτες, οι στρατιώτες του Αβεσσαλώμ, είχαν φύγει και είχαν γυρίσει καθένας στο σπίτι του. 10 Σ’ όλες τις φυλές του Ισραήλ γίνονταν έντονες συζητήσεις ανάμεσα στο λαό: «Ο βασιλιάς μάς έσωσε από τους εχθρούς μας», έλεγαν. «Αυτός μας ελευθέρωσε από τους Φιλισταίους. Και τώρα έφυγε από τη χώρα εξαιτίας του Αβεσσαλώμ. 11 Ο Αβεσσαλώμ, όμως, που τον χρίσαμε βασιλιά μας, σκοτώθηκε στη μάχη. Τώρα, λοιπόν, τι περιμένουμε και δε φροντίζουμε να ξαναφέρουμε το βασιλιά Δαβίδ;»*το βασιλιά Δαβίδ, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. προσθέτει «στο ανάκτορό του».

12 Αυτά που έλεγαν οι Ισραηλίτες, έφτασαν και στο βασιλιά Δαβίδ. Έστειλε μήνυμα, λοιπόν, στο Σαδώκ και στον Αβιάθαρ, τους ιερείς, να πουν στους πρεσβυτέρους της φυλής Ιούδα: «Γιατί καθυστερείτε να ξαναφέρετε το βασιλιά στο ανάκτορό του; 13 Εσείς είσαστε αδέρφια μου, σάρκα μου και αίμα μου. Γιατί να μείνετε οι τελευταίοι που θα ξαναφέρετε το βασιλιά;» 14 Και στον Αμασά διέταξε να πουν: «Εσύ είσαι αίμα μου και σάρκα μου. Να με θανατώσει ο Κύριος, αν δεν γίνεις ισόβιος αρχιστράτηγός μου, στη θέση του Ιωάβ».

15 Τα λόγια του Δαβίδ λύγισαν την καρδιά όλων των αντρών της φυλής Ιούδα. Με ομόφωνη συμφωνία έστειλαν μήνυμα στο βασιλιά: «Γύρισε», του έλεγαν, «μαζί με όλους τους ανθρώπους σου».

16 Ο βασιλιάς πήρε το δρόμο του γυρισμού κι έφτασε στον Ιορδάνη. Οι άντρες της φυλής Ιούδα ήρθαν στα Γάλγαλα για να τον προϋπαντήσουν και να τον βοηθήσουν να περάσει το ποτάμι. 17 Τότε έτρεξε κι ο Σιμεΐ, γιος του Γερά, ο Βενιαμινίτης, που καταγόταν από τη Βαχουρίμ και βιάστηκε να πάει με τους άντρες της φυλής Ιούδα για να προϋπαντήσει το βασιλιά Δαβίδ. 18 Μαζί του ήταν και χίλιοι Βενιαμινίτες και ο Σιβά, ο υπηρέτης της οικογένειας του Σαούλ, με τους δεκαπέντε γιους του και τους είκοσι υπηρέτες του. Ήρθαν κι αυτοί στον Ιορδάνη να προϋπαντήσουν το βασιλιά. 19 Όλοι αυτοί διαβήκαν το πέρασμα του ποταμού, για να μεταφέρουν την οικογένεια του βασιλιά και να εκτελέσουν τυχόν προσταγές του.

Ενώ ο βασιλιάς περνούσε τον Ιορδάνη, ο Σιμεΐ, γιος του Γερά, έπεσε μπροστά του. 20 «Μη μου λογαριάσεις, κύριέ μου βασιλιά, την αμαρτία μου!» του είπε. «Ξέχνα το κακό που σου ’κανα εγώ, ο δούλος σου, την ημέρα που έβγαινες από την Ιερουσαλήμ· μην το σκέφτεσαι πια βασιλιά μου. 21 Ο δούλος σου αναγνωρίζω ότι αμάρτησα. Και να, σήμερα ήρθα πρώτος απ’ όλες τις φυλές του Ιωσήφ για να σε συναντήσω κύριέ μου, βασιλιά».

22 Τότε ο Αβισάι, γιος της Σερουΐας πήρε το λόγο και είπε: «Πρέπει να πεθάνει ο Σιμεΐ, γιατί καταράστηκε τον εκλεκτό του Κυρίου». 23 Αλλά ο Δαβίδ είπε στον Αβισάι και στον αδερφό του τον Ιωάβ: «Τι σχέση έχετε εσείς μ’ εμένα, γιοι της Σερουΐας, και μ’ ενοχλείτε σήμερα; Κανείς δεν πρέπει να σκοτωθεί στον Ισραήλ σήμερα που αποκτώ τη βεβαιότητα ότι είμαι πραγματικά ο βασιλιάς αυτού του λαού». 24 Μετά γύρισε και είπε στο Σιμεΐ: «Δε θα πεθάνεις». Και του το υποσχέθηκε με όρκο.

25,26 Ο Μεμφιβοσθέ, εγγονός του Σαούλ, ήρθε κι αυτός από την Ιερουσαλήμ για να προϋπαντήσει το βασιλιά. Δεν είχε πλύνει τα πόδια του, ούτε είχε περιποιηθεί τα γένεια του, ούτε είχε πλύνει τα ρούχα του από την ημέρα που είχε φύγει ο βασιλιάς ως εκείνη την ημέρα που γύριζε νικητής. Όταν τον είδε ο βασιλιάς του είπε: «Γιατί δεν ήρθες μαζί μου, Μεμφιβοσθέ;»

27 Εκείνος απάντησε: «Κύριέ μου βασιλιά, ο υπηρέτης μου με εξαπάτησε. Εγώ, ο δούλος σου, του είχα πει να σαμαρώσει το γαϊδούρι για μένα, για να ανέβω πάνω του και να έρθω μαζί σου, επειδή είμαι ανάπηρος στα πόδια. 28 Αλλά αυτός με συκοφάντησε σ’ εσένα, κύριέ μου βασιλιά. Όμως εσύ είσαι σαν άγγελος του Θεού. Κάνε λοιπόν όπως νομίζεις, ό,τι σου φαίνεται καλό. 29 Όλη η οικογένεια του πατέρα μου ήταν άνθρωποι άξιοι θανάτου μπροστά σου, κύριέ μου βασιλιά. Εσύ όμως έβαλες το δούλο σου ανάμεσα σ’ αυτούς που έτρωγαν στο τραπέζι σου. Τι άλλο δικαίωμα μπορώ να έχω ακόμα; Και τι άλλη χάρη να ζητήσω από σένα, βασιλιά;»

30 Ο βασιλιάς απάντησε: «Τι χρειάζονται όλ’ αυτά τα λόγια; Είπα: εσύ και ο Σιβά θα μοιραστείτε τα χωράφια του Σαούλ». 31 Τότε ο Μεμφιβοσθέ αποκρίθηκε στο βασιλιά: «Ας τα πάρει όλα ο Σιβά! Φτάνει εσύ, κύριέ μου βασιλιά, να γυρίσεις στο ανάκτορό σου σώος και αβλαβής!»

32 Ο Βαρζιλλαΐ, ο Γαλααδίτης, κατέβηκε από την Ρωγελίμ και πέρασε με το βασιλιά τον Ιορδάνη, για να τον αποχαιρετήσει εκεί. 33 Ήταν πολύ ηλικιωμένος, ογδόντα χρόνων. Αυτός φρόντιζε για το φαγητό του βασιλιά όταν κατοικούσε στη Μαχαναΐμ, γιατί ήταν πολύ πλούσιος άνθρωπος. 34 Ο βασιλιάς τού είπε: «Έλα μαζί μου, Βαρζιλλαΐ, κι εγώ θα φροντίζω για το φαγητό σου, όσο θα είσαι μαζί μου στην Ιερουσαλήμ».

35 Εκείνος όμως απάντησε στο βασιλιά: «Πόσα χρόνια ζωής έχω ακόμα για ν’ ανέβω μαζί σου, βασιλιά μου, στην Ιερουσαλήμ; 36 Σήμερα εγώ, ο δούλος σου, είμαι ογδόντα χρονών. Δεν μπορώ πια να απολαύσω τις ομορφιές της ζωής. Δεν μπορώ να καταλάβω τη γεύση αυτών που τρώω και πίνω. Δεν μπορώ πια ν’ ακούω και να χαίρομαι τους τραγουδιστές και τις τραγουδίστριες. Γιατί να σου γίνω βάρος, κύριέ μου, βασιλιά; 37 Μόλις που μπορώ να σε συνοδεύσω για λίγο στο πέρασμα του Ιορδάνη. Γιατί να μου κάνεις, βασιλιά μου, μια τέτοια ανταπόδοση; 38 Επίτρεψέ μου, λοιπόν, να γυρίσω και να πεθάνω στην πόλη μου, κοντά στον τάφο των γονέων μου. Είν’ εδώ, όμως, ο δούλος μου ο Χιμάμ· ας έρθει αυτός μαζί σου, κύριέ μου βασιλιά, και κάνε γι’ αυτόν ό,τι σου φαίνεται καλό».

39 Ο βασιλιάς είπε: «Ας έρθει μαζί μου ο Χιμάμ, κι εγώ θα κάνω γι’ αυτόν ό,τι μου ζητήσεις».

40 Πέρασε όλος ο στρατός τον Ιορδάνη· κι όταν ο βασιλιάς πέρασε κι αυτός, φίλησε το Βαρζιλλαΐ και τον ευλόγησε, κι ο Βαρζιλλαΐ γύρισε στο σπίτι του.

41 Ο βασιλιάς έφτασε στα Γάλγαλα κι ο Χιμάμ ήταν μαζί του. Όλος ο στρατός του Ιούδα και ο μισός στρατός του Ισραήλ συνόδευαν το βασιλιά.

42 Τότε οι Ισραηλίτες πλησίασαν το βασιλιά και τον ρώτησαν: «Με ποιο δικαίωμα, βασιλιά, σε άρπαξαν οι άντρες της φυλής Ιούδα και σ’ έφεραν, εσένα και την οικογένειά σου, μαζί και το στρατό σου, πέρα από τον Ιορδάνη;»

43 Οι άντρες της φυλής Ιούδα απάντησαν στους Ισραηλίτες: «Ο βασιλιάς συγγενεύει περισσότερο μ’ εμάς. Κι εσείς γιατί οργιστήκατε μ’ αυτή μας την ενέργεια; Μήπως εξαρτηθήκαμε οικονομικά από το βασιλιά ή μήπως μας δωροδόκησε;»

44 Οι Ισραηλίτες αποκρίθηκαν στους άντρες του Ιούδα: «Εμείς έχουμε δέκα φορές περισσότερα δικαιώματα στο βασιλιά από σας», τούς είπαν, «έστω κι αν ο Δαβίδ είναι απ’ τη φυλή σας. Γιατί μας περιφρονείτε; Δεν ήμασταν εμείς οι πρώτοι που προτείναμε να ξαναφέρουμε το βασιλιά μας;» Οι άντρες όμως του Ιούδα απάντησαν με γλώσσα σκληρότερη από κείνη των Ισραηλιτών.*Για την αρίθμηση των στ. βλ. υποσ. εις στ. 1.

11 And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house. 12 Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king? 13 And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab. 14 And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man; so that they sent this word unto the king, Return thou, and all thy servants. 15 So the king returned, and came to Jordan. 16 And Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite, which was of Bahurim, hasted and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David. 17 And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king. 18 And there went over a ferry boat to carry over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good. And the king sware unto him.

24 And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace. 25 And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth? 26 And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for thy servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride thereon, and go to the king; because thy servant is lame. 27 And he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes. 28 For all of my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. 31 And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan. 32 Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man. 33 And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem. 34 And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?*19.34 How…: Heb. 41 And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David’s men with him, over Jordan? 42 And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: wherefore then be ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king’s cost? or hath he given us any gift? 43 And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king?
