1 Μετά από αρκετόν καιρό πέθανε ο βασιλιάς των Αμμωνιτών και τον διαδέχτηκε ο γιος του ο Χανούν. 2 Τότε είπε ο Δαβίδ: «Θα δείξω καλοσύνη στο Χανούν, γιο του Ναχάς, όπως είχε δείξει και σ’ εμένα καλοσύνη ο πατέρας του». Έτσι έστειλε αξιωματούχους να τον συλλυπηθούν εκ μέρους του για το θάνατο του πατέρα του.

Πράγματι, οι αξιωματούχοι του Δαβίδ πήγαν στη χώρα των Αμμωνιτών. 3 Οι άρχοντες όμως των Αμμωνιτών είπαν στον κύριό τους το Χανούν: «Εσύ πιστεύεις πως ο Δαβίδ ήθελε να τιμήσει τον πατέρα σου και γι’ αυτό σου έστειλε τους ανθρώπους του να σε συλλυπηθεί; Μάλλον τους έστειλε για να εξερευνήσουν την πόλη και να την κατασκοπεύσουν και μετά να έρθουν να την καταστρέψουν». 4 Έτσι συνέλαβε ο Χανούν τους αξιωματούχους του Δαβίδ, ξύρισε τα μισά τους γένια, έκοψε απ’ τη μέση και κάτω τα ρούχα τους ως τους μηρούς, και τους έδιωξε πίσω.

5 Όταν ο Δαβίδ πληροφορήθηκε τα συμβάντα, κατάλαβε πως είχε καταρρακωθεί η τιμή των ανθρώπων του και τους παράγγειλε με αγγελιοφόρους να μείνουν στην Ιεριχώ ώσπου να μεγαλώσουν τα γένια τους και μετά να επιστρέψουν.

6 Οι Αμμωνίτες κατάλαβαν ότι πια είχαν γίνει μισητοί στο Δαβίδ. Έστειλαν, λοιπόν, και μίσθωσαν είκοσι χιλιάδες πεζούς από τους Συρίους της Βαιθ-Ρεχώβ και της Σωβά, χίλιους άντρες από το βασιλιά της Μααχά και δώδεκα χιλιάδες άντρες από τον Ιστώβ. 7 Μόλις το ’μαθε ο Δαβίδ, έστειλε εναντίον τους τον αρχιστράτηγο Ιωάβ με όλο το στράτευμα των εκπαιδευμένων πολεμιστών. 8 Οι Αμμωνίτες βγήκαν και παρατάχθηκαν σε θέση μάχης στην είσοδο της πύλης της πρωτεύουσάς τους, της Ραββάθ. Οι Σύριοι της Σωβά, της Ρεχώβ, της Μααχά και του βασιλιά Ιστώβ παρατάχθηκαν ξέχωρα, έξω στους αγρούς.

9 Όταν είδε ο Ιωάβ ότι επρόκειτο ν’ αντιμετωπίσει επίθεση από μπροστά και από πίσω, παρέταξε τους επίλεκτους άντρες του ισραηλιτικού στρατού απέναντι από τους Συρίους. 10 Το υπόλοιπο του στρατού το έθεσε στις διαταγές του Αβισάι, του αδερφού του, ο οποίος το παρέταξε απέναντι στους Αμμωνίτες. 11 Ο Ιωάβ είπε στον αδερφό του: «Αν δεις ότι οι Σύριοι με νικούν, θα έρθεις να με βοηθήσεις· κι αν εγώ δω ότι οι Αμμωνίτες σε νικούν, θα έρθω να σε βοηθήσω. 12 Δείξε θάρρος και ας φανούμε ισχυροί για χάρη του λαού μας και για τις πόλεις του Θεού μας. Κι ο Κύριος ας κάνει ό,τι του φαίνεται καλό».

13 Όταν ο Ιωάβ κι ο στρατός του προέλασαν για να επιτεθούν στους Συρίους, εκείνοι τράπηκαν σε φυγή. 14 Μόλις είδαν οι Αμμωνίτες ότι οι Σύριοι τράπηκαν σε φυγή, έφυγαν κι αυτοί κυνηγημένοι από τον Αβισάι και μπήκαν στην πόλη. Έτσι ο Ιωάβ σταμάτησε να πολεμάει τους Αμμωνίτες και γύρισε στην Ιερουσαλήμ.

15 Όταν όμως οι Σύριοι είδαν ότι κατατροπώνονταν από τους Ισραηλίτες, έκαναν γενική ανασυγκρότηση των δυνάμεών τους. 16 Ο Αδαδέζερ έστειλε κι επιστράτευσε τους Συρίους που κατοικούσαν πέρα από τον ποταμό Ευφράτη. Αυτοί συγκεντρώθηκαν στην Αιλάμ με επικεφαλής τον Σωβάκ, αρχιστράτηγο του Αδαδέζερ. 17 Όταν το ’μαθε ο Δαβίδ, συγκέντρωσε όλο το στρατό των Ισραηλιτών, πέρασε τον Ιορδάνη και ήρθε στην Αιλάμ. Οι Σύριοι παρατάχθηκαν απέναντι στο Δαβίδ και άρχισαν την επίθεση. 18 Αλλά οι Ισραηλίτες τους έτρεψαν σε φυγή και ο Δαβίδ σκότωσε απ’ αυτούς εφτακόσιους οδηγούς αμαξών και σαράντα χιλιάδες ιππείς· χτυπήθηκε κι ο Σωβάκ, ο αρχιστράτηγός τους, και πέθανε εκεί. 19 Οι ηγεμόνες που ως τότε ήταν υποτελείς στον Αδαδέζερ, όταν είδαν ότι είχαν όλοι τους νικηθεί από τους Ισραηλίτες, συνθηκολόγησαν κι έγιναν υποτελείς τους. Από τότε, οι Σύριοι δεν τολμούσαν πια να βοηθήσουν τους Αμμωνίτες.

1 And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead. 2 Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon. 3 And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?*10.3 Thinkest…: Heb. In thine eyes doth David 4 Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away. 5 When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ish-tob twelve thousand men.*10.6 Ish-tob: or, the men of Tob 7 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men. 8 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ish-tob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field. 9 When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians: 10 And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon. 11 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee. 12 Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good. 13 And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him. 14 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

15 And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together. 16 And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.*10.16 the river: that is, Euphrates*10.16 Shobach: or, Shophach 17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him. 18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.*10.18 horsemen: also called, footmen 19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.
