1 Την εποχή που βασίλευε ο Δαβίδ, έπεσε πείνα στη χώρα και κράτησε τρία συνεχή χρόνια. Ο Δαβίδ ρώτησε σχετικά τον Κύριο κι ο Κύριος του αποκρίθηκε: «Αυτό έγινε εξαιτίας των φόνων που έκανε ο Σαούλ και οι δικοί του, όταν έδωσε διαταγή να θανατωθούν οι Γαβαωνίτες».

2 (Οι Γαβαωνίτες δεν ήταν Ισραηλίτες, αλλά υπολείμματα των Αμορραίων. Οι Ισραηλίτες τούς είχαν υποσχεθεί με όρκο να τους αφήσουν στη ζωή. Αλλά ο Σαούλ, από υπερβολικό ζήλο για το λαό του Ισραήλ και του Ιούδα, είχε επιδιώξει κάποτε να τους σκοτώσει).

3 Κάλεσε, λοιπόν, ο βασιλιάς Δαβίδ τους Γαβαωνίτες και τους ρώτησε: «Τι μπορώ να κάνω για σας; Πώς μπορώ να επανορθώσω το κακό που πάθατε, ώστε να σταματήσετε να καταριέστε το λαό του Κυρίου και να τον ευλογήσετε;» 4 Οι Γαβαωνίτες του απάντησαν: «Η διαφορά μας με το Σαούλ και την οικογένειά του δεν είναι για μας υπόθεση που κανονίζεται με ασήμι και χρυσάφι, ούτε θέλουμε να σκοτώσεις για χάρη μας κανέναν από τους Ισραηλίτες». Ο Δαβίδ απάντησε: «Πείτε μου τι θέλετε, κι εγώ θα σας το κάνω». 5 Οι Γαβαωνίτες του απάντησαν: «Αυτός ο άνθρωπος μας κατέστρεψε και σκόπευε να μας εξοντώσει και να μας εξαφανίσει απ’ όλη την περιοχή του Ισραήλ. 6 Ας μας παραδοθούν, λοιπόν, εφτά άντρες από τους απογόνους του να τους κρεμάσουμε ενώπιον του Κυρίου, στη Γιβεά, την πόλη όπου κατοικούσε ο Σαούλ, ο εκλεκτός του Κυρίου». Ο βασιλιάς απάντησε: «Θα σας τους παραδώσω».

7 Ο Δαβίδ όμως εξαίρεσε το Μεμφιβοσθέ, γιο του Ιωνάθαν κι εγγονό του Σαούλ, επειδή Δαβίδ και Ιωνάθαν είχαν δώσει σχετικό όρκο μεταξύ τους, στο όνομα του Κυρίου. 8 Διέταξε, λοιπόν, να βρουν τον Αρμωνί και το Μεμφιβοσθέ, που ήταν γιοι της Ρισπά, κόρης του Αϊά, και τους είχε γεννήσει στο Σαούλ, καθώς και τους πέντε γιους της Μιχάλ,*Μιχάλ. Κατά το Α΄ Σαμ 18:19 στον Αδριήλ δόθηκε η Μεράβ και όχι η Μιχάλ. κόρης του Σαούλ, που τους είχε γεννήσει στον Αδριήλ γιο του Βαρζιλλαΐ, του Μεχολαθίτη, 9 και τους παρέδωσε στους Γαβαωνίτες. Εκείνοι τους κρέμασαν στο βουνό, κοντά στη Γιβεά, ενώπιον του Κυρίου, και πέθαναν και οι εφτά μαζί. Η εκτέλεση έγινε τις πρώτες μέρες του θερισμού των κριθαριών.

10 Η Ρισπά, κόρη του Αϊά, έστρωσε το πένθιμο φόρεμά της πάνω στο βράχο, κάθισε πάνω του και δεν άφηνε τα όρνεα να πλησιάζουν στα πτώματα την ημέρα ή τ’ άγρια θηρία τη νύχτα. Εκεί έμεινε από την αρχή του θερισμού ως τότε που ήρθε από τον ουρανό βροχή πάνω στους νεκρούς.

11 Όταν αναγγέλθηκε στο Δαβίδ αυτό που έκανε η Ρισπά, η παλλακίδα του Σαούλ, 12 διέταξε και πήραν τα οστά του Σαούλ και του Ιωνάθαν, του γιου του, από τους κατοίκους της Ιαβές, στη Γαλαάδ. Οι κάτοικοί της τα είχαν κλέψει από την πλατεία της Βαιθ-Σεάν, όπου τους είχαν κρεμάσει οι Φιλισταίοι, τότε που σκότωσαν το Σαούλ στα όρη Γελβουέ. 13,14 Πήρε, λοιπόν, ο Δαβίδ τα οστά του Σαούλ και του Ιωνάθαν από την Ιαβές και, μαζί με τα οστά αυτών που είχαν κρεμαστεί, τα έθαψαν στην περιοχή της φυλής Βενιαμίν, στη Σηλά, στον τάφο του Κις, πατέρα του Σαούλ. Κι αφού έκαναν όλα όσα διέταξε ο βασιλιάς, ο Θεός έδειξε πάλι την εύνοιά του στη χώρα και σταμάτησε το λιμό.

15 Ανάμεσα στους Φιλισταίους και στους Ισραηλίτες έγινε πάλι πόλεμος. Ο Δαβίδ βγήκε με το στρατό του στο πεδίο της μάχης, αλλά κουράστηκε. 16 Ένας γίγαντας, ο Ισβί-Βενώβ, που το ακόντιό του ζύγιζε τριακόσιους σίκλους χαλκού και ήταν ζωσμένος ένα καινούργιο σπαθί, όρμησε αποφασισμένος να σκοτώσει το Δαβίδ. 17 Αλλά ο Αβισάι, γιος της Σερουΐας, βοήθησε το Δαβίδ, χτύπησε το Φιλισταίο και τον σκότωσε. Τότε οι στρατιώτες του Δαβίδ τον εξόρκισαν και του είπαν: «Δεν θα βγαίνεις πια μαζί μας στη μάχη για να μη σβήσει η βασιλεία του Ισραήλ».

18 Μετά απ’ αυτά, έγινε πάλι πόλεμος στη Γωβ εναντίον των Φιλισταίων. Εκεί ο Σιββεχαΐ ο Χουσαθίτης, σκότωσε το γίγαντα Σαφ. 19 Σ’ έναν άλλο πόλεμο, που έγινε πάλι στη Γωβ εναντίον των Φιλισταίων, ο Ελχανάν, γιος του Ιαρέ-Ορεγίμ του Βηθλεεμίτη, σκότωσε το Γολιάθ το Γαθίτη, που το ξύλο της λόγχης του ήταν σαν το αντί του αργαλειού. 20 Έγινε, όμως, και πάλι πόλεμος στη Γαθ. Εκεί ήταν ένας γίγαντας εξαδάκτυλος στα χέρια και στα πόδια (συνολικά είχε είκοσι τέσσερα δάκτυλα). 21 Αυτός πρόσβαλλε συνέχεια τους Ισραηλίτες, αλλά ο Ιωνάθαν, γιος του Σαμμά και ανεψιός του Δαβίδ, τον σκότωσε. 22 Και οι τέσσερις αυτοί Φιλισταίοι πολεμιστές ήταν απόγονοι του Ραφά στη Γαθ, και σκοτώθηκαν από το Δαβίδ και τους στρατιώτες του.

And the king said, I will give them.*21.6 whom…: or, chosen of the LORD 7 But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD’s oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul. 8 But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite:*21.8 Michal: or, Michal’s sister*21.8 brought…: Heb. bear to Adriel 9 And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the hill before the LORD: and they fell all seven together, and were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of barley harvest.

10 And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night. 11 And it was told David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done.

12 And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabesh-gilead, which had stolen them from the street of Beth-shan, where the Philistines had hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in Gilboa: 13 And he brought up from thence the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son; and they gathered the bones of them that were hanged. 14 And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land.

15 Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint. 16 And Ishbi-benob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David.*21.16 the giant: or, Rapha*21.16 spear: Heb. the staff, or, the head 17 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him.
