1 Στη συνέχεια συνέβησαν τα εξής: «Ο Αβεσσαλώμ, γιος του Δαβίδ, είχε μια ωραία αδερφή, που ονομαζόταν Ταμάρ. Αυτήν την αγάπησε ο ετεροθαλής αδερφός της ο Αμνών, άλλος γιος του Δαβίδ. 2 Ο Αμνών βασανιζόταν τόσο πολύ από τον έρωτά του, που αρρώστησε για την Ταμάρ, γιατί ήταν παρθένα και του ήταν πάρα πολύ δύσκολο να την πλησιάσει.*Οι ανύπαντρες κόρες δεν είχαν ελεύθερη επικοινωνία με τους άντρες αλλά ζούσαν περιορισμένες στους γυναικωνίτες.

3 Αλλά ο Αμνών είχε έναν φίλο, τον Ιωναδάβ, γιο του Σαμμά, αδερφού του Δαβίδ. Ο Ιωναδάβ ήταν πολύ πανούργος άνθρωπος. 4 Ρώτησε, λοιπόν, τον Αμνών: «Γιατί κάθε μέρα είσαι τόσο στενοχωρημένος, γιε του βασιλιά; Δε θα μου πεις;» Ο Αμνών του απάντησε: «Αγαπώ την Ταμάρ, αδερφή του αδερφού μου Αβεσσαλώμ». 5 Ο Ιωναδάβ του είπε: «Πέσε στο κρεβάτι και κάνε τον άρρωστο· κι όταν έρθει ο πατέρας σου να σε δει, να του πεις: "θέλω να έρθει η αδερφή μου η Ταμάρ να μου φέρει φαγητό, να το ετοιμάσει μπροστά μου για να το δω και να φάω από τα χέρια της"».

6 Έπεσε, λοιπόν, ο Αμνών στο κρεβάτι κι έκανε τον άρρωστο. Όταν ήρθε ο βασιλιάς να τον δει, του είπε ο Αμνών: «Θέλω να έρθει, σε παρακαλώ, η αδερφή μου η Ταμάρ και να ετοιμάσει μπροστά μου δυο πίτες για να φάω από τα χέρια της».

7 Έτσι ο Δαβίδ ειδοποίησε την Ταμάρ στο ανάκτορο και της είπε: «Πήγαινε στο σπίτι του αδερφού σου, του Αμνών, κι ετοίμασέ του φαγητό». 8 Η Ταμάρ πήγε στο σπίτι του Αμνών, που ήταν ξαπλωμένος στο κρεβάτι, πήρε ζυμάρι, το ζύμωσε κι ετοίμασε μπροστά του πίτες και τις έψησε. 9 Ύστερα τις έφερε με το τηγάνι και τις άδειασε μπροστά του. Αλλά ο Αμνών αρνήθηκε να φάει και διάταξε να τους βγάλουν όλους έξω από το δωμάτιο. Όταν βγήκαν όλοι έξω, 10 είπε στην Ταμάρ: «Φέρε το φαγητό στο κρεβάτι μου να με ταΐσεις με το χέρι σου». Εκείνη έφερε στο κρεβάτι του αδερφού της τις πίτες που είχε φτιάξει.

11 Καθώς του τις έδινε για να φάει, εκείνος την έπιασε και της είπε: «Έλα, πλάγιασε μαζί μου, αδερφή μου». 12 Αυτή του απάντησε: «Όχι, αδερφέ μου. Μη με ατιμάσεις! Τέτοιο πράγμα δεν πρέπει να γίνει στο λαό του Ισραήλ. Μην κάνεις αυτή την ανοησία. 13 Πώς θα μπορέσω ν’ αντέξω τέτοια ντροπή! Κι εσύ θα θεωρείσαι άτιμος από όλους τους Ισραηλίτες. Μίλησε καλύτερα στο βασιλιά· ασφαλώς δε θα αρνηθεί να με δώσει σ’ εσένα». 14 Ο Αμνών όμως δεν ήθελε να την ακούσει, και καθώς ήταν δυνατότερος απ’ αυτήν, την υποχρέωσε να πλαγιάσει μαζί του και τη βίασε.

15 Μετά ο Αμνών τη μίσησε τρομερά. Τόσο, που το μίσος του γι’ αυτήν ήταν μεγαλύτερο από τον έρωτά του. Της λέει, λοιπόν, «Σήκω και φύγε». 16 «Όχι, αδερφέ μου», του απάντησε εκείνη. «Μη με διώχνεις. Το κακό αυτό θα είναι μεγαλύτερο από το άλλο που μου ’κανες». Εκείνος όμως δεν άκουγε τίποτα. 17 Φώναξε το νεαρό υπηρέτη του και τον διάταξε: «Πάρ’ την από μπροστά μου· βγάλ’ την έξω κι αμπάρωσε και την πόρτα». 18 Ο υπηρέτης την έβγαλε έξω κι αμπάρωσε την πόρτα.

Η Ταμάρ φορούσε χιτώνα με μανίκια, που έφτανε ως τα πόδια. Έτσι ντύνονταν οι παρθένες κόρες του βασιλιά, από την παλιά εποχή. 19 Έβαλε, λοιπόν, στάχτη στο κεφάλι της κι έσκισε το μακρύ χιτώνα που φορούσε,*Εκδηλώσεις πένθους. Βλ. υποσ. εις Γεν 37:29. με τα μανίκια· έβαλε τα χέρια πάνω στο κεφάλι της και προχωρούσε φωνάζοντας. 20 Ο αδερφός της ο Αβεσσαλώμ τη ρώτησε: «Μήπως σε βίασε ο αδερφός σου ο Αμνών; Έλα τώρα, αδερφή μου, σώπα· αδερφός σου, είναι, μην το παίρνεις κατάκαρδα». Έτσι η Ταμάρ έμεινε στο σπίτι του Αβεσσαλώμ, ως χήρα.*ως χήρα. Βλ. υποσ. εις Γεν 38:11.

21 Όταν ο βασιλιάς Δαβίδ πληροφορήθηκε τα καθέκαστα, θύμωσε πάρα πολύ. 22 Ο Αβεσσαλώμ, εξάλλου, δε μιλούσε καθόλου στον Αμνών –τόσο πολύ τον μισούσε που είχε ατιμάσει την αδερφή του την Ταμάρ.

23 Μετά από δύο χρόνια, ο Αβεσσαλώμ είχε κουρευτές προβάτων στο σπίτι του στη Βάαλ-Χασώρ, κοντά στην περιοχή της φυλής Εφραΐμ και προσκάλεσε όλους τους γιους του βασιλιά. 24 Ο Αβεσσαλώμ παρουσιάστηκε στο βασιλιά και του είπε: «Ο δούλος σου έχω κουρευτές προβάτων. Ας έρθει, σε παρακαλώ, ο βασιλιάς και οι αξιωματούχοι του στο σπίτι μου».

25 Ο βασιλιάς απάντησε στον Αβεσσαλώμ: «Όχι, γιε μου, ας μην έρθουμε τώρα όλοι μας, για να μη σε επιβαρύνουμε». Ο Αβεσσαλώμ τον πίεζε, αλλά εκείνος δε θέλησε να πάει, και του ευχήθηκε καλό κατευόδιο.

26 Τότε ο Αβεσσαλώμ του είπε: «Αν είν’ έτσι, τότε ας έρθει μαζί μας ο αδερφός μου ο Αμνών». Ο βασιλιάς τον ρώτησε: «Γιατί να έρθει μαζί σου ο Αμνών;» 27 Ο Αβεσσαλώμ όμως τον πίεσε ξανά κι εκείνος έδωσε την άδεια να πάει μαζί του ο Αμνών και όλοι οι άλλοι γιοι του βασιλιά. 28 Τότε ο Αβεσσαλώμ έδωσε στους ανθρώπους του διαταγή: «Προσέξτε», τους είπε· «όταν ο Αμνών έρθει στο κέφι από το κρασί και σας πω, "χτυπήστε τον", τότε θα τον σκοτώσετε. Μη φοβηθείτε. Εγώ δε διατάζω; Πάρτε, λοιπόν, θάρρος και φανείτε γενναίοι».

29 Οι υπηρέτες του Αβεσσαλώμ έκαναν στον Αμνών, ό,τι τους είχε διατάξει ο κύριός τους. Τότε σηκώθηκαν όλοι οι γιοι του βασιλιά, ανέβηκαν ο καθένας στο μουλάρι του κι έφυγαν. 30 Ενώ αυτοί ήταν ακόμα στο δρόμο, έφτασε η είδηση στο Δαβίδ, ότι ο Αβεσσαλώμ σκότωσε όλους τους γιους του βασιλιά και δεν έμεινε κανένας ζωντανός.

31 Ο βασιλιάς σηκώθηκε έσκισε τα ρούχα του και έπεσε καταγής. Όλοι οι υπηρέτες γύρω του έσκισαν κι αυτοί τα ρούχα τους.*Βλ. υποσ. εις στ. 19.32,33 Αλλά ο Ιωναδάβ, γιος του Σαμμά κι ανεψιός του Δαβίδ, του είπε: «Μη νομίζεις, κύριέ μου βασιλιά, ότι σκότωσαν όλους τους νέους, τους γιους σου. Μόνο ο Αμνών είναι νεκρός· το είχε αποφασίσει ο Αβεσσαλώμ από την ημέρα που ο Αμνών ατίμασε την αδερφή του την Ταμάρ. Μη βασανίζεσαι, λοιπόν, με τέτοιες σκέψεις».

34 Στο μεταξύ ο Αβεσσαλώμ είχε φύγει.

Κάποια στιγμή ο φρουρός στρατιώτης σήκωσε τα μάτια του και είδε ένα πλήθος ανθρώπων που έρχονταν από το δρόμο της Βαιθ-Χωρών, από την πλαγιά του βουνού. 35 Ο Ιωναδάβ είπε στο Δαβίδ: «Να οι γιοι του βασιλιά, έρχονται. Όσα σου είπε ο δούλος σου επαληθεύονται». 36 Μόλις τέλειωσε τα λόγια του, έφτασαν οι γιοι του βασιλιά και ξέσπασαν σε δυνατό κλάμα. Ακόμα κι ο ίδιος ο βασιλιάς κι όλοι οι αξιωματούχοι του έκλαιγαν γοερά.

37,38 Ο Αβεσσαλώμ είχε καταφύγει στο βασιλιά της Γεσούρ τον Ταλμαΐ, γιο του Αμμιούδ, κι έμεινε κοντά του τρία χρόνια. Ο βασιλιάς Δαβίδ όλο αυτό το διάστημα κρατούσε πένθος για το γιο του. 39 Όταν παρηγορήθηκε από το θάνατο του Αμνών, επιθύμησε να πάει να δει τον Αβεσσαλώμ.

6 So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand. 7 Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon’s house, and dress him meat. 8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was laid down. And she took flour, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes.*13.8 flour: or, paste 9 And she took a pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him. 10 And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. 15 Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.*13.15 exceedingly: Heb. with great hatred greatly 16 And she said unto him, There is no cause: this evil in sending me away is greater than the other that thou didst unto me. But he would not hearken unto her. 17 Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her. 18 And she had a garment of divers colours upon her: for with such robes were the king’s daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her.

19 And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of divers colours that was on her, and laid her hand on her head, and went on crying. 20 And Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but hold now thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; regard not this thing. 21 But when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth. 22 And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.

23 And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheepshearers in Baal-hazor, which is beside Ephraim: and Absalom invited all the king’s sons. 24 And Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheepshearers; let the king, I beseech thee, and his servants go with thy servant. 25 And the king said to Absalom, Nay, my son, let us not all now go, lest we be chargeable unto thee. And he pressed him: howbeit he would not go, but blessed him. 26 Then said Absalom, If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee? 27 But Absalom pressed him, that he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him.

28 Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.*13.28 have…: or, will you not, since I have commanded you?*13.28 valiant: Heb. sons of valour 29 And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. 30 And it came to pass, while they were in the way, that tidings came to David, saying, Absalom hath slain all the king’s sons, and there is not one of them left. 31 Then the king arose, and tare his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent. 32 And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king’s sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the appointment of Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.*13.32 appointment: Heb. mouth*13.32 determined: or, settled 33 Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king’s sons are dead: for Amnon only is dead. 34 But Absalom fled.
