1 Μετά ο Αχιτόφελ είπε στον Αβεσσαλώμ: «Άφησέ με να διαλέξω δώδεκα χιλιάδες άντρες και να πάω να καταδιώξω το Δαβίδ απόψε κιόλας. 2 Θα του επιτεθώ, ενώ αυτός θα είναι κουρασμένος κι εξαντλημένος και θα τον κατατρομάξω. Όλοι όσοι τον ακολουθούν θα φύγουν κι εγώ θα χτυπήσω το βασιλιά μόνο του. 3 Ύστερα θα οδηγήσω όλον το λαό σ’ εσένα, όπως φέρνουν τη νύφη στον άντρα της. Άμα πεθάνει ένας μονάχα άνθρωπος, αυτός που εσύ γυρεύεις να σκοτώσεις, τότε όλος ο λαός θα ’ρθει με το μέρος σου και θα ζήσει ειρηνικά».

4 Αυτός ο λόγος φάνηκε καλός στον Αβεσσαλώμ και σ’ όλους του πρεσβυτέρους του Ισραήλ. 5 Ο Αβεσσαλώμ ωστόσο είπε: «Καλέστε τώρα και τον Χουσαΐ τον Αρχίτη ν’ ακούσουμε κι αυτόν τι έχει να μας πει». 6 Ο Χουσαΐ παρουσιάστηκε κι ο Αβεσσαλώμ του είπε: «Έτσι κι έτσι μίλησε ο Αχιτόφελ. Να ακολουθήσουμε τη συμβουλή του; Αν όχι, πες μου εσύ τι πρέπει να κάνουμε».

7 Ο Χουσαΐ είπε στον Αβεσσαλώμ: «Αυτή τη φορά δεν είναι καλή η συμβουλή που έδωσε ο Αχιτόφελ. 8 Εσύ ξέρεις ότι ο πατέρας σου και οι άντρες του είναι γενναίοι στρατιώτες και τώρα είναι εξοργισμένοι, σαν την άγρια αρκούδα που της άρπαξαν τα μικρά της. Ο πατέρας σου είναι πολεμιστής και δε μένει τη νύχτα μαζί με τους άντρες του. 9 Τώρα κιόλας θα είναι κρυμμένος σε κανένα λάκκο ή σε κάποιο άλλο μέρος. Αν συμβεί να επιτεθεί εκείνος πρώτος και να σκοτώσει μερικούς απ’ το στρατό μας, όποιος κι αν το ακούσει θα σκεφτεί ότι νικήθηκε πια ο στρατός του Αβεσσαλώμ. 10 Τότε, όσο γενναίος κι αν είναι κανείς και καρδιά λιονταριού να έχει, θα χάσει το ηθικό του, γιατί όλος ο Ισραήλ ξέρει ότι ο πατέρας σου είναι ήρωας και όσοι είναι μαζί του είναι πολεμιστές γενναίοι. 11 Εγώ, λοιπόν, προτείνω να συγκεντρωθούν κοντά σου όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες, από Δαν έως Βέερ-Σεβά,*από Δαν έως Βέερ-Σεβά. Βλ. υποσ. εις Κρ 20:1. καθώς είναι πολυάριθμοι σαν την άμμο στην ακροθαλασσιά, κι εσύ προσωπικά να πας μαζί τους. 12 Θα συναντήσουμε το Δαβίδ όπου κι αν βρίσκεται και θα πέσουμε πάνω του, όπως πέφτει η δροσιά πάνω στη γη. Δε θα γλιτώσει κανένας: ούτε ο Δαβίδ ούτε οι άντρες του. 13 Αν καταφύγουν σε κάποια πόλη, τότε όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες θα φέρουμε σχοινιά σ’ αυτή την πόλη και θα τη σύρουμε ως το χείμαρρο, ώσπου να μη μείνει εκεί ούτε λιθάρι όρθιο».

14 Τότε ο Αβεσσαλώμ και όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες είπαν: «Καλύτερη είναι η συμβουλή του Χουσαΐ, του Αρχίτη, από τη συμβουλή του Αχιτόφελ». Ο Κύριος είχε αποφασίσει να ματαιώσει το σχέδιο του Αχιτόφελ, ώστε να φέρει καταστροφή στον Αβεσσαλώμ.

15 Τότε είπε ο Χουσαΐ στο Σαδώκ και στον Αβιάθαρ, τους ιερείς: «Αυτά κι αυτά συμβούλεψε ο Αχιτόφελ τον Αβεσσαλώμ και τους πρεσβυτέρους του λαού Ισραήλ, και αυτά κι αυτά τους συμβούλεψα εγώ. 16 Τώρα λοιπόν, στείλτε γρήγορα να ειδοποιήσετε το Δαβίδ και να του πείτε να μη μείνει αυτή τη νύχτα στην κοιλάδα του Ιορδάνη, αλλά να περάσει γρήγορα τον ποταμό, για να μην εξολοθρευτεί κι αυτός και όλος ο λαός που τον ακολουθεί».

17 Ο Ιωνάθαν κι ο Αχιμάας περίμεναν κοντά στην πηγή Ρωγήλ· εκεί θα πήγαινε μια υπηρέτρια να τους δώσει το μήνυμα κι αυτοί θα έπρεπε να το μεταφέρουν στο βασιλιά Δαβίδ. Δεν τους υποχρέωνε να μπουν στην πόλη από φόβο μήπως γίνουν αντιληπτοί. 18 Ένας νεαρός όμως τους είδε και το είπε στον Αβεσσαλώμ· αλλά οι δυο τους έτρεξαν γρήγορα κι έφτασαν σ’ ένα σπίτι στη Βαχουρίμ, που είχε στην αυλή του πηγάδι· εκεί κατέβηκαν και κρύφτηκαν. 19 Η γυναίκα πήγε και άπλωσε ένα σκέπασμα στο στόμιο του πηγαδιού και σκόρπισε πάνω του σπιριά σταριού· έτσι δεν φαινόταν τίποτα.

20 Οι αξιωματούχοι του Αβεσσαλώμ ήρθαν σ’ αυτό το σπίτι και ρώτησαν τη γυναίκα: «Πού είναι ο Αχιμάας και ο Ιωνάθαν;» Η γυναίκα τους απάντησε: «Πέρασαν πέρα από το ποτάμι». Αυτοί τους αναζήτησαν, αλλά δεν τους βρήκαν και γύρισαν στην Ιερουσαλήμ.

21 Όταν οι αξιωματούχοι έφυγαν, ο Αχιμάας κι ο Ιωνάθαν ανέβηκαν από το πηγάδι και πήγαν να ειδοποιήσουν το βασιλιά Δαβίδ. «Σηκωθείτε και περάστε γρήγορα το ποτάμι», του είπαν, «γιατί αυτά κι αυτά συμβούλεψε ο Αχιτόφελ εναντίον σας». 22 Έτσι σηκώθηκε ο Δαβίδ κι όλοι όσοι τον ακολουθούσαν και πέρασαν τον Ιορδάνη. Ως τα ξημερώματα δεν υπήρχε κανείς που να μην είχε περάσει τον Ιορδάνη.

23 Ο Αχιτόφελ, όταν είδε ότι δεν ακολούθησαν τη συμβουλή του, σαμάρωσε το γαϊδούρι του κι έφυγε για το σπίτι του, στην πόλη του. Τακτοποίησε τις υποθέσεις του σπιτιού του και μετά κρεμάστηκε. Τον έθαψαν στον τάφο του πατέρα του.

24 Ο Δαβίδ είχε κιόλας φτάσει στη Μαχαναΐμ όταν ο Αβεσσαλώμ περνούσε τον Ιορδάνη, μαζί με όλο τον ισραηλιτικό στρατό. 25 Στη θέση του Ιωάβ ο Αβεσσαλώμ είχε διορίσει αρχιστράτηγο τον Αμασά. Ο Αμασά ήταν γιος κάποιου Ισραηλίτη, του Ιθρά, που τον είχε κάνει με την Αβιγαία, κόρη του Ναχάς και αδερφή της Σερουΐας, μητέρας του Ιωάβ. 26 Ο Αβεσσαλώμ και οι Ισραηλίτες στρατοπέδευσαν στη Γαλαάδ.

27 Όταν έφτανε ο Δαβίδ στη Μαχαναΐμ, ο Σωβεί, γιος του Ναχάς, από την αμμωνιτική πόλη Ραββάθ, ο Μαχείρ, γιος του Αμμιήλ, από την πόλη Λο-Δεβάρ και ο Βαρζιλλαΐ, Γαλααδίτης από τη Ρωγελίμ, 28,29 έφεραν κρεβάτια, πιάτα, και πήλινα δοχεία· επίσης έφεραν στάρι, κριθάρι, κριθαρένιο αλεύρι, στάρια ψημένα, φασόλια, φακές, μέλι, βούτυρο, πρόβατα και αγελαδινό τυρί για να φάνε ο Δαβίδ και ο λαός που τον ακολουθούσε. Σκέφτηκαν πως θα ήταν όλοι τους πεινασμένοι, διψασμένοι κι εξαντλημένοι από την πορεία τους στην έρημο.

For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.*17.14 appointed: Heb. commanded

15 Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled. 16 Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him. 17 Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; for they might not be seen to come into the city: and a wench went and told them; and they went and told king David. 18 Nevertheless a lad saw them, and told Absalom: but they went both of them away quickly, and came to a man’s house in Bahurim, which had a well in his court; whither they went down. 19 And the woman took and spread a covering over the well’s mouth, and spread ground corn thereon; and the thing was not known. 20 And when Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house, they said, Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. 21 And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David, and said unto David, Arise, and pass quickly over the water: for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you.

22 Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over Jordan.

23 And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.*17.23 followed: Heb. done*17.23 put his…: Heb. gave charge concerning his house 24 Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

25 And Absalom made Amasa captain of the host instead of Joab: which Amasa was a man’s son, whose name was Ithra an Israelite, that went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab’s mother.*17.25 Ithra an Israelite: or, Jether an Ishmaelite*17.25 Abigail: Heb. 27 And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim, 28 Brought beds, and basons, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched corn, and beans, and lentiles, and parched pulse,*17.28 basons: or, cups 29 And honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.
