1 Όταν ο Κύριος απάλλαξε το Δαβίδ απ’ όλους τους εχθρούς του και από το Σαούλ, ο Δαβίδ του απηύθυνε τον παρακάτω ύμνο:

2 Εσύ είσαι, Κύριε, το καταφύγιό μου,

το φρούριό μου

κι ο ελευθερωτής μου.

3 Θεέ μου εσύ είσ’ ο βράχος μου,

όπου και καταφεύγω·

η ασπίδα μου κι η δύναμη που με λυτρώνει·

είσαι ο ψηλός ο πύργος μου,

το καταφύγιό μου.

Είσ’ ο σωτήρας, που με σώζει από την αδικία.

4 Στον Κύριο ανήκει κάθε ύμνος.

Αυτόν καλώ να με βοηθήσει

κι απ’ τους εχθρούς μου σώζομαι.

5 Κύματα με περικύκλωσαν θανάτου,

ποταμοί ολέθρου με κατατρόμαξαν.

6 Με ζώσαν τα δεσμά του άδη

κι ο θάνατος μου ’στησε τις παγίδες του.

7 Φώναξα μες στη θλίψη μου στον Κύριο,

απ’ το Θεό μου ζήτησα βοήθεια.

Άκουσε τη φωνή μου απ’ το ναό του

κι η έκκλησή μου προς εκείνον για βοήθεια

έγινε δεκτή.

8 Τότε η γη σαλεύτηκε και άρχισε να τρέμει.

Ταράχτηκαν τα ουρανοθέμελα

και σείστηκαν, γιατ’ ήταν οργισμένος.

9 Βγήκε καπνός απ’ τους μυκτήρες του

κι από το στόμα του μια καταλυτική φωτιά

έβγαινε, ανάμικτη με κάρβουνα αναμμένα.

10 Χαμήλωσε τα ουράνια και κατέβηκε,

κάτω απ’ τα πόδια του το σύννεφο του γνόφου.

11 Ανέβηκε στα χερουβίμ και πέταξε,

με τα φτερά εμφανίστηκε του ανέμου.

12 Με το σκοτάδι μια σκηνή τριγύρω του έφτιαξε

με τα πυκνά τα σύννεφα, τα σκοτεινά νερά.

13 Από τη λάμψη, που μπροστά του προχωρούσε

πετιούνταν πυρωμένα κάρβουνα.

14 Από τον ουρανό βρόντηξε ο Κύριος

και τη φωνή του ο Ύψιστος άφησε ν’ ακουστεί.

15 Τα βέλη του ξαπόστειλε

και τους εχθρούς του σκόρπισε,

πλήθος τις αστραπές του έστειλε

και τους κατατρόμαξε.

16 Τότε οι πυθμένες φάνηκαν της θάλασσας,

και ξεσκεπάστηκαν της οικουμένης τα θεμέλια

από την απειλή σου, Κύριε,

κι από την οργισμένη αναπνοή σου.

17 Άπλωσε από ψηλά το χέρι του και μ’ έπιασε,

με τράβηξε απ’ την πλημμύρα των νερών.

18 Από τους δυνατούς εχθρούς μου μ’ ελευθέρωσε,

από τους αντιπάλους μου, που ήταν από μένα πιο ισχυροί.

19 Της συμφοράς μου την ημέρα μ’ αιφνιδίασαν,

αλλά ο Κύριος στάθηκε το στήριγμά μου.

20 Σε τόπο μ’ έβγαλε ανοιχτό, με γλίτωσε,

γιατί με αποδέχεται με καλοσύνη.

21 Ο Κύριος με αντάμειψε, γιατί του στάθηκα πιστός·

μου ανταπόδωσε ό,τι ταιριάζει στην αθωότητά μου.

22 Γιατί ακολούθησα τους δρόμους που μου όρισε ο Κύριος

και στο Θεό μου δεν ασέβησα.

23 Για οδηγό μου είχα όλα του τα προστάγματα

και δεν απομακρύνθηκα απ’ τους νόμους του.

24 Απέναντί του στάθηκα άψογος

και φυλαγόμουν να μην ανομήσω.

25 Ο Κύριος με αντάμειψε

γιατί του στάθηκα πιστός

και για την αθωότητά μου, που την ξέρει.

26 Με τον πιστό, Κύριε, είσαι πιστός,

τέλειος είσαι με τον τέλειο,

27 με τον καθάριο καθαρός·

μα φέρεσαι εχθρικά στον διεστραμμένο.

28 Σώζεις εσύ όλους τους ταπεινωμένους

αλλά μ’ ένα σου βλέμμα τον περήφανο τον ταπεινώνεις.

29 Γιατί εσύ ’σαι, Κύριε, το λυχνάρι μου,

εσύ που το σκοτάδι μου φωτίζεις.

30 Μαζί μ’ εσένα ορμώ σ’ εχθρικό στράτευμα,

με το Θεό μου διασκελίζω τείχος.

31 Τέλειες είναι του Θεού οι ενέργειες

ο λόγος του Κυρίου είν’ αξιόπιστος·

ασπίδα εκείνος γίνεται σ’ όλους που καταφεύγουνε σ’ αυτόν.

32 Γιατί ποιος άλλος είναι Θεός, αν όχι ο Κύριος;

Ποιος είναι βράχος, αν δεν είναι ο Θεός μας;

33 Ο Θεός με προστατεύει σαν οχύρωμα,

κάνει να πετυχαίνει ό,τι επιχειρώ.

34 Κάνει τα πόδια μου σαν ελαφίνας γρήγορα

και με κρατάει όρθιο

στα υψώματα.*στα υψώματα, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «στους ψηλούς μου τόπους».

35 Γυμνάζει για τον πόλεμο τα χέρια μου

για να τεντώνουν άτρεμα τα μπράτσα μου

το τόξο τ’ ορειχάλκινο.

36 Μου ’δωσες την ασπίδα που μ’ αυτήν με σώζεις,

Στην προσευχή μου η απάντησή σου

με κάνει δυνατό.

37 Εσύ ανοίγεις δρόμο μπρος στα βήματά μου

και σταθερά τα πόδια μου πατούν.

38 Παίρνω κυνήγι τους εχθρούς μου και τους αφανίζω,

και δε γυρίζω πίσω πριν να τους εξοντώσω εντελώς.

39 Τους εξοντώνω, τους συντρίβω·

δε θα μπορέσουν πια να σηκωθούν,

κείτονται καταγής κάτω απ’ τα πόδια μου.

40 Με ζώνεις για τον πόλεμο με δύναμη,

και κάνεις να λυγίζουν κάτωθέ μου

όσοι ξεσηκωθήκαν εναντίον μου.

41 Σε φυγή τρέπεις τους εχθρούς μου από μπρος μου

κι εξολοθρεύω αυτούς που με μισούν.

42 Κοιτάζουν για βοήθεια γύρω τους,

αλλά δεν είν’ κανείς για να τους σώσει·

στον Κύριο φωνάζουν,

μα δεν τους αποκρίνεται.

43 Σκόνη τους κάνω καθώς της γης το χώμα,

σαν να ’ναι λάσπη μες στο δρόμο τούς συνθλίβω,

τους ποδοπατώ.

44 Μ’ έσωσες από τη φιλονικία του λαού μου,

μ’ έκανες αρχηγό εθνών·

λαοί που δεν τους γνώριζα,

έγιναν τώρα υποτελείς μου.

45 Έρχονται ξένοι και με κολακεύουν·

στον πρώτο λόγο μου δείχνονται υπάκουοι.

46 Οι ξένοι καταρρέουν

και βγαίνουν απ’ τα οχυρά τους τρέμοντας.

47 Ο Κύριος ζει!

Ο βράχος μου, ας είναι ευλογημένος

και δοξασμένος ο Θεός,

ο βράχος μου και λυτρωτής μου!

48 Είν’ ο Θεός, που παίρνει εκδίκηση για χάρη μου,

που υποτάσσει κατωθέ μου τους λαούς,

49 και που με σώζει από τους εχθρούς μου.

Κύριε, με υψώνεις πάνω απ’ τους αντιπάλους μου,

μ’ ελευθερώνεις απ’ τους βίαιους ανθρώπους.

50 Γι’ αυτό μέσα στα έθνη θα σε δοξάζω, Κύριε

κι ύμνους θα ψάλλω στ’ όνομά σου.

51 Μεγάλες νίκες δίνει στο βασιλιά του ο Κύριος·

και δείχνει αγάπη για τον εκλεκτό του,

για το Δαβίδ και για τους απογόνους του αιώνια.

1 And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:

2 And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; 3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. 4 I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. 5 When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid;*22.5 waves: or, pangs*22.5 ungodly…: Heb. Belial 6 The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me;*22.6 sorrows: or, cords 7 In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears. 8 Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of heaven moved and shook, because he was wroth. 9 There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.*22.9 out of his nostrils: Heb. by, etc 10 He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet. 11 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind. 12 And he made darkness pavilions round about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies.*22.12 dark…: Heb. binding of waters 13 Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled. 14 The LORD thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his voice. 15 And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, and discomfited them. 16 And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were discovered, at the rebuking of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils. 17 He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters;*22.17 many: or, great 18 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me. 19 They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay. 20 He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me. 21 The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me. 22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God. 23 For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them. 24 I was also upright before him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity.*22.24 before: Heb. to 25 Therefore the LORD hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.*22.25 in…: Heb. before his eyes 26 With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright. 27 With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury.*22.27 shew thyself unsavoury: or, wrestle 28 And the afflicted people thou wilt save: but thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down. 29 For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness.*22.29 lamp: or, candle 30 For by thee I have run through a troop: by my God have I leaped over a wall.*22.30 run: or, broken 31 As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.*22.31 tried: or, refined 32 For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God? 33 God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect.*22.33 maketh: Heb. riddeth, or, looseth 34 He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet: and setteth me upon my high places.*22.34 maketh: Heb. equalleth 35 He teacheth my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.*22.35 to war: Heb. for the war 36 Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great.*22.36 made…: Heb. multiplied me 37 Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; so that my feet did not slip.*22.37 feet: Heb. ankles 38 I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; and turned not again until I had consumed them. 39 And I have consumed them, and wounded them, that they could not arise: yea, they are fallen under my feet. 40 For thou hast girded me with strength to battle: them that rose up against me hast thou subdued under me.*22.40 subdued: Heb. caused to bow 41 Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me. 42 They looked, but there was none to save; even unto the LORD, but he answered them not. 43 Then did I beat them as small as the dust of the earth, I did stamp them as the mire of the street, and did spread them abroad. 44 Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people, thou hast kept me to be head of the heathen: a people which I knew not shall serve me. 45 Strangers shall submit themselves unto me: as soon as they hear, they shall be obedient unto me.*22.45 Strangers: Heb. Sons of the stranger*22.45 submit…: or, yield feigned obedience: Heb. lie 46 Strangers shall fade away, and they shall be afraid out of their close places. 47 The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation. 48 It is God that avengeth me, and that bringeth down the people under me,*22.48 avengeth: Heb. giveth avengement for 49 And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man. 50 Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name. 51 He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for evermore.
