1 Ο Ιωάβ, γιος της Σερουΐας, κατάλαβε ότι ο νους του βασιλιά δεν έφευγε από τον Αβεσσαλώμ. 2 Έτσι έστειλε κι έφερε από την Τεκωά μια έξυπνη γυναίκα και της είπε: «Κάνε ότι πενθείς· φόρεσε πένθιμα ρούχα, μην αλειφτείς με αρωματικό λάδι και προσποιήσου τη γυναίκα που πενθεί από καιρό έναν νεκρό. 3 Πήγαινε στο βασιλιά και πες του αυτά που θα σου πω». Κι ο Ιωάβ της είπε τι να πει.

4 Η γυναίκα ήρθε στο βασιλιά, έσκυψε το πρόσωπό της στη γη, προσκύνησε και είπε: «Βοήθησέ με, βασιλιά». 5 Ο βασιλιάς τη ρώτησε: «Τι σου συμβαίνει;» Εκείνη απάντησε: «Αλίμονο, είμαι χήρα! Ο άντρας μου έχει πεθάνει. 6 Εγώ, η δούλη σου, είχα δύο γιους. Κάποια μέρα φιλονίκησαν μεταξύ τους στο χωράφι αλλά δεν ήταν εκεί κανείς να τους χωρίσει· έτσι ο ένας χτύπησε τον άλλο και τον σκότωσε. 7 Τότε ξεσηκώθηκαν όλοι οι συγγενείς ενάντια σ’ εμένα, τη δούλη σου, και απαιτούσαν να τους παραδώσω το φονιά για να τον σκοτώσουν και να πάρουν εκδίκηση για το θάνατο του αδερφού του. Αλλά έτσι εγώ μένω χωρίς γιο και χωρίς κληρονόμο. Προσπαθούν να σβήσουν και την τελευταία ελπίδα που μου απέμεινε, και να μην αφήσουν στον άντρα μου έναν απόγονο με τ’ όνομά του στη χώρα». 8 Ο βασιλιάς απάντησε στη γυναίκα: «Πήγαινε στο σπίτι σου κι εγώ θα δώσω διαταγή σχετικά με την υπόθεσή σου».

9 Η γυναίκα της Τεκωά είπε στο βασιλιά: «Κύριέ μου, βασιλιά, ό,τι και να κάνεις, εγώ κι η οικογένεια του πατέρα μου θα υποστούμε τις συνέπειες, πάνω μας θα πέσει η τιμωρία. Εσύ κι ο θρόνος σου δε θα ’χουν τίποτε να φοβηθούν». 10 «Αν κάποιος μιλήσει εναντίον σου», είπε ο βασιλιάς, «φέρε μού τον εδώ και δε θα σε ξαναπειράξει». 11 «Δώσε μου λοιπόν υπόσχεση, βασιλιά», είπε εκείνη, «στο όνομα του Κυρίου του Θεού σου, ότι δε θ’ αφήσεις τον εκδικητή του φόνου που διέπραξε ο γιος μου να κάνει μεγαλύτερο κακό, σκοτώνοντας και τον άλλο μου το γιο». Τότε ο βασιλιάς τής ορκίστηκε: «Μα τον αληθινό Θεό, ούτε μία τρίχα από το κεφάλι του γιου σου δε θα πειραχτεί».

12 Η γυναίκα είπε πάλι: «Ας πω, σε παρακαλώ, εγώ η δούλη σου στον κύριό μου, το βασιλιά, ένα λόγο ακόμα». «Μίλησε», της είπε ο βασιλιάς. 13 Τότε η γυναίκα είπε: «Γιατί, λοιπόν, σχεδιάζεις μια παρόμοια ενέργεια ενάντια στο λαό του Θεού; Όπως μίλησες, βασιλιά, αποδεικνύεσαι ένοχος, αφού δεν φέρνεις πίσω τον Αβεσσαλώμ, που τον κρατάς εξόριστο. 14 Όλοι μας, βέβαια, θα πεθάνουμε μια μέρα· θα γίνουμε σαν το νερό που χύνεται στη γη και κανένας δεν μπορεί να το ξαναμαζέψει. Ούτε ο Θεός φέρνει πίσω τους νεκρούς. Αλλά ένας βασιλιάς μπορεί να βρει τρόπο να φέρει πίσω απ’ την εξορία έναν εξόριστο.*Το εβρ. στο στ. 14 είναι ασαφές και η μετ. αβέβαιη.15 Τώρα αν ήρθα να τα πω όλα αυτά σ’ εσένα, κύριέ μου, βασιλιά, είναι γιατί με φόβισε ο λαός. Σκέφτηκα, η δούλη σου, να σου μιλήσω· ίσως εκπληρώσεις την παράκλησή μου. 16 Εσύ, βασιλιά, ασφαλώς θ’ ακούσεις και θα γλιτώσεις τη δούλη σου από έναν άνθρωπο που ζητάει να εξοντώσει εμένα και τον γιο μου, από το λαό αυτό, που ανήκει στο Θεό. 17 Λοιπόν, η δούλη σου, σκέφτηκα ότι ο λόγος σου, κύριέ μου βασιλιά, θα ειρηνεύσει τα πράγματα, γιατί, εσύ είσαι σαν ένας άγγελος του Θεού: ξέρεις να διακρίνεις το καλό από το κακό. Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σου, ας είναι μαζί σου».

18 Τότε ο βασιλιάς είπε στη γυναίκα: «Θα σε ρωτήσω κάτι και μη μου κρύψεις τίποτα». Η γυναίκα απάντησε: «Ας μιλήσει ο κύριός μου, ο βασιλιάς». 19 «Ο Ιωάβ δε σ’ έβαλε να μου τα πεις όλα αυτά;» ρώτησε ο βασιλιάς. Η γυναίκα αποκρίθηκε: «Ο κύριός μου, ο βασιλιάς, δεν έπεσε καθόλου έξω. Και βέβαια ο δούλος σου ο Ιωάβ με διέταξε να σου τα πω όλα αυτά. 20 Και το ’κανε αυτό για να δώσει άλλη τροπή στην υπόθεση. Αλλά εσύ, κύριέ μου είσαι σοφός σαν άγγελος του Θεού, και μπορείς να καταλαβαίνεις όλα όσα συμβαίνουν στη γη».

21 Ο βασιλιάς είπε στον Ιωάβ: «Ορίστε, λοιπόν, η υπόθεση τακτοποιήθηκε όπως ήθελες: Πήγαινε και φέρε πίσω τον νεαρό Αβεσσαλώμ». 22 Τότε ο Ιωάβ έπεσε με το πρόσωπο στη γη, προσκύνησε κι ευχαρίστησε το βασιλιά μ’ αυτά τα λόγια: «Σήμερα εγώ ο δούλος σου κατάλαβα ότι έχω την εύνοιά σου, κύριέ μου βασιλιά, αφού εκπλήρωσες την παράκληση του δούλου σου».

23 Μετά σηκώθηκε και πήγε στη Γεσούρ κι έφερε από ’κει τον Αβεσσαλώμ στην Ιερουσαλήμ. 24 Ο βασιλιάς είπε: «Ας γυρίσει στο σπίτι του. Αλλά εμένα δε θα με δει». Έτσι ο Αβεσσαλώμ γύρισε στο σπίτι του, χωρίς να δει το βασιλιά.

25 Σ’ όλον τον Ισραήλ δεν υπήρχε σαν τον Αβεσσαλώμ άνθρωπος που να εγκωμιάζεται τόσο πολύ για την ομορφιά του. Από τα νύχια ως την κορυφή δεν είχε κανένα ψεγάδι. 26 Στο τέλος κάθε χρόνου κούρευε το κεφάλι του, γιατί τον βάραιναν τα μαλλιά του. Τα ζύγιζαν και ήταν διακόσιοι σίκλοι, με βάση το κανονικό βασιλικό ζύγι. 27 Ο Αβεσσαλώμ απέκτησε τρεις γιους και μία κόρη, που ονομαζόταν Ταμάρ και ήταν πολύ ωραία γυναίκα.

28 Ο Αβεσσαλώμ έμεινε στην Ιερουσαλήμ δύο ολόκληρα χρόνια χωρίς να δει το βασιλιά. 29 Μια μέρα κάλεσε τον Ιωάβ να τον στείλει στο βασιλιά, αλλά ο Ιωάβ δε θέλησε να ’ρθει στον Αβεσσαλώμ. Τον κάλεσε και δεύτερη φορά, αλλά και πάλι δε θέλησε να ’ρθει. 30 Τότε διάταξε τους υπηρέτες του: «Το χωράφι του Ιωάβ είναι κοντά στο δικό μου κι είναι σπαρμένο κριθάρι. Πηγαίνετε και βάλτε του φωτιά». Έτσι οι υπηρέτες του Αβεσσαλώμ έβαλαν φωτιά στο χωράφι του Ιωάβ.

31 Τότε ο Ιωάβ πήγε στο σπίτι του Αβεσσαλώμ και του ζήτησε το λόγο: «Γιατί οι υπηρέτες σου έβαλαν φωτιά στο χωράφι μου;» 32 Ο Αβεσσαλώμ του απάντησε: «Επειδή σου ζήτησα να ’ρθεις εδώ και δεν ήρθες. Ήθελα να σε στείλω στο βασιλιά, να του πεις εκ μέρους μου: "γιατί μ’ έφερες από τη Γεσούρ; Ήταν προτιμότερο για μένα να είχα μείνει εκεί". Τώρα, λοιπόν, θέλω να γίνω δεκτός από το βασιλιά. Και αν είμαι ένοχος, ας με σκοτώσει».

33 Ο Ιωάβ παρουσιάστηκε στο βασιλιά και του ανέφερε τα καθέκαστα. Ο βασιλιάς κάλεσε τον Αβεσσαλώμ κι εκείνος παρουσιάστηκε μπροστά του κι έπεσε με το πρόσωπο στη γη και τον προσκύνησε. Κι ο βασιλιάς φίλησε τον Αβεσσαλώμ.

1 Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart was toward Absalom. 2 And Joab sent to Tekoah, and fetched thence a wise woman, and said unto her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner, and put on now mourning apparel, and anoint not thyself with oil, but be as a woman that had a long time mourned for the dead: 3 And come to the king, and speak on this manner unto him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.

4 And when the woman of Tekoah spake to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, Help, O king.*14.4 Help: Heb. Save 5 And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, I am indeed a widow woman, and mine husband is dead. 6 And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other, and slew him.*14.6 none…: Heb. no deliverer between them 7 And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.*14.7 upon…: Heb. upon the face of the earth 8 And the king said unto the woman, Go to thine house, and I will give charge concerning thee. 9 And the woman of Tekoah said unto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father’s house: and the king and his throne be guiltless. 10 And the king said, Whosoever saith ought unto thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more. 11 Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the LORD thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak. 19 And the king said, Is not the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine handmaid: 20 To fetch about this form of speech hath thy servant Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.

21 And the king said unto Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man Absalom again. 22 And Joab fell to the ground on his face, and bowed himself, and thanked the king: and Joab said, To day thy servant knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request of his servant.*14.22 thanked: Heb. blessed*14.22 his servant: or, thy servant 23 So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem. 24 And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face. So Absalom returned to his own house, and saw not the king’s face.

25 But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.*14.25 But…: Heb. And as Absalom there was not a beautiful man in all Israel to praise greatly 26 And when he polled his head, (for it was at every year’s end that he polled it: because the hair was heavy on him, therefore he polled it:) he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels after the king’s weight. 27 And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.

28 So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king’s face. 29 Therefore Absalom sent for Joab, to have sent him to the king; but he would not come to him: and when he sent again the second time, he would not come. 30 Therefore he said unto his servants, See, Joab’s field is near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.*14.30 near…: Heb. near my place 31 Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him, Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire? 32 And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me. 33 So Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.
