1 Μόλις ο Δαβίδ είχε περάσει λίγο την κορυφή του λόφου, τον συνάντησε ο Σιβά, υπηρέτης του Μεμφιβοσθέ. Οδηγούσε δυο γαϊδούρια σαμαρωμένα και πάνω τους διακόσια ψωμιά, εκατό τσαμπιά ξερές σταφίδες, εκατό φρούτα της εποχής και ένα ασκί κρασί. 2 Ο βασιλιάς τον ρώτησε: «Τι τα θέλεις αυτά;» Ο Σιβά απάντησε: «Τα γαϊδούρια είναι για ν’ ανεβαίνει η οικογένειά σου, βασιλιά, το ψωμί και τα φρούτα για να τρώνε οι άντρες σου και το κρασί για να πίνουν όσοι εξαντλούνται στην έρημο». 3 «Πού είναι ο Μεμφιβοσθέ, ο εγγονός του κυρίου σου του Σαούλ;» ρώτησε ο βασιλιάς. Ο Σιβά απάντησε: «Έμεινε στην Ιερουσαλήμ, γιατί πιστεύει ότι σήμερα οι Ισραηλίτες θα του αποδώσουν τη βασιλεία του παππού του». 4 Τότε ο βασιλιάς τού αποκρίθηκε: «Όλα όσα ανήκουν στο Μεμφιβοσθέ είναι τώρα δικά σου». Κι ο Σιβά φώναξε: «Προσκυνώ· μακάρι να έχω πάντα την εύνοιά σου, κύριέ μου, βασιλιά!»

5 Όταν ο βασιλιάς Δαβίδ πλησίαζε στη Βαχουρίμ, έβγαινε από την πόλη ένας που ονομαζόταν Σιμεΐ, γιος του Γηρά· προερχόταν από τη συγγένεια όπου ανήκε και η οικογένεια του Σαούλ. Αυτός άρχισε να καταριέται το Δαβίδ 6 και να του ρίχνει πέτρες, καθώς και σ’ όλους τους αξιωματούχους του, μολονότι ο βασιλιάς περιστοιχιζόταν από το στρατό και τους σωματοφύλακές του. 7 «Φύγε! Φύγε φονιά, κακούργε!» φώναζε, και ξεστόμιζε κατάρες: 8 «Ο Κύριος σε τιμωρεί για τους φόνους που έκανες στην οικογένεια του Σαούλ, που του πήρες το θρόνο! Ο Κύριος παρέδωσε τη βασιλεία στον Αβεσσαλώμ, το γιο σου. Κι εσύ μένεις με την κακία σου, γιατί είσαι φονιάς».

9 Τότε ο Αβισάι, γιος της Σερουΐας, είπε στο βασιλιά: «Γιατί αυτό το ψοφόσκυλο να βρίζει τον κύριό μου, το βασιλιά; Άσε με, σε παρακαλώ, να πάω να του πάρω το κεφάλι». 10 Ο βασιλιάς, όμως, είπε στον Αβισάι και στον αδερφό του τον Ιωάβ: «Τι δουλειά έχετε εσείς μ’ εμένα, γιοι της Σερουΐας; Αν αυτός με καταριέται επειδή ο Κύριος του είπε να καταραστεί το Δαβίδ, ποιος μπορεί να του ζητήσει το λόγο;» 11 Και πρόσθεσε απευθυνόμενος στον Αβισάι και στους αξιωματούχους του: «Αφού ο γιος μου, το σπλάχνο μου, ζητάει το θάνατό μου, γιατί όχι κι αυτός ο Βενιαμινίτης; Αφήστε τον να βρίζει· ο Κύριος τον διέταξε. 12 Ίσως ο Κύριος δει τη θλίψη μου και μετατρέψει σε ευλογία τη σημερινή κατάρα του Σιμεΐ».

13 Έτσι ο Δαβίδ και οι άντρες του συνέχισαν το δρόμο τους, ενώ ο Σιμεΐ βάδιζε στην πλαγιά του βουνού δίπλα τους, ξεστομίζοντας κατάρες και πετώντας πέτρες και χώμα. 14 Ο βασιλιάς κι ο λαός που τον ακολουθούσε έφτασαν στον Ιορδάνη*στον Ιορδάνη, σύμφωνα με αρχαία ελληνική μετ. Στο εβρ. η φρ. δεν υπάρχει. εξαντλημένοι κι εκεί ξεκουράστηκαν.

15 Ο Αβεσσαλώμ και όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες που ήταν μαζί του ήρθαν στην Ιερουσαλήμ· μαζί τους ήταν και ο Αχιτόφελ. 16 Μόλις ο Χουσαΐ ο Αρχίτης, ο φίλος του Δαβίδ, έφτασε στον Αβεσσαλώμ, του φώναξε: «Ζήτω ο βασιλιάς, ζήτω ο βασιλιάς!» 17 Τότε ο Αβεσσαλώμ του είπε: «Αυτή είναι η αγάπη σου για το φίλο σου; Πώς δεν πήγες με το φίλο σου;» 18 Ο Χουσαΐ απάντησε: «Όχι! Εγώ ανήκω σ’ εκείνον που διάλεξε ο Κύριος και που μαζί του είναι όλος ο λαός Ισραήλ· μαζί σου, λοιπόν, θα μείνω. 19 Έπειτα, ποιον θα υπηρετώ εγώ; Δεν θα υπηρετώ το γιο του κυρίου μου; Όπως υπηρέτησα τον πατέρα σου, έτσι θα υπηρετήσω κι εσένα».

20 Τότε ο Αβεσσαλώμ είπε στον Αχιτόφελ: «Σκεφτείτε τώρα τι να κάνουμε». 21 Ο Αχιτόφελ του απάντησε: «Να πας να πλαγιάσεις με τις παλλακίδες του πατέρα σου, που τις άφησε να φυλάνε το ανάκτορο.*Βλ. κεφ. 15:16· υποσ. εις 3:7. Έτσι όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες θα μάθουν ότι προκάλεσες την εχθρότητα του πατέρα σου, κι όσοι είναι μαζί σου θα πάρουν θάρρος». 22 Έστησαν, λοιπόν, μια σκηνή πάνω στο δώμα των ανακτόρων και πήγε ο Αβεσσαλώμ μπροστά σ’ όλους και πλάγιασε με τις παλλακίδες του πατέρα του.

23 Εκείνο τον καιρό οι συμβουλές που έδινε ο Αχιτόφελ λογαριάζονταν σαν να ήταν λόγος Θεού. Έτσι τις θεωρούσαν τόσο ο Δαβίδ όσο κι ο Αβεσσαλώμ.

9 Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head. 10 And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? so let him curse, because the LORD hath said unto him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so? 11 And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, which came forth of my bowels, seeketh my life: how much more now may this Benjamite do it? let him alone, and let him curse; for the LORD hath bidden him. 12 It may be that the LORD will look on mine affliction, and that the LORD will requite me good for his cursing this day.*16.12 affliction: or, tears: Heb. eye 13 And as David and his men went by the way, Shimei went along on the hill’s side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust.*16.13 cast…: Heb. dusted him with dust 14 And the king, and all the people that were with him, came weary, and refreshed themselves there.

20 Then said Absalom to Ahithophel, Give counsel among you what we shall do. 21 And Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Go in unto thy father’s concubines, which he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel shall hear that thou art abhorred of thy father: then shall the hands of all that are with thee be strong. 22 So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of the house; and Absalom went in unto his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel. 23 And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counselled in those days, was as if a man had enquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.*16.23 oracle: Heb. word
