1 Εκεί στα Γάλγαλα ζούσε ένας Βενιαμινίτης, κακοήθης άνθρωπος, που ονομαζόταν Σεβά, γιος του Βιχρί. Αυτός σάλπισε με τη σάλπιγγα και είπε:

«Εμείς δεν έχουμε καμιά σχέση με το Δαβίδ,

ούτε κοινή κληρονομιά με το γιο του Ιεσσαί.

Γυρίστε καθένας σπίτι του, Ισραηλίτες».

2 Τότε όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες άφησαν το Δαβίδ και ακολούθησαν το Σεβά· οι άντρες της φυλής Ιούδα, όμως, έμειναν πιστοί στο βασιλιά τους και τον συνόδεψαν από τον Ιορδάνη ως την Ιερουσαλήμ.

3 Όταν ήρθε ο βασιλιάς στο ανάκτορό του στην Ιερουσαλήμ, πήρε τις δέκα παλλακίδες, που τις είχε αφήσει να φυλάνε το ανάκτορο, και τις εγκατέστησε σ’ ένα σπίτι που φυλασσόταν καλά. Φρόντιζε για τη διατροφή τους, αλλά δεν είχε πια σχέσεις μαζί τους. Έμειναν έτσι αποκλεισμένες, ως το θάνατό τους, σαν ζωντοχήρες.

4 Στη συνέχεια ο βασιλιάς είπε στον Αμασά: «Συγκέντρωσε μου το στρατό της φυλής Ιούδα και σε τρεις μέρες να έρθετε εδώ». 5 Ο Αμασά πήγε να εκτελέσει τη διαταγή, καθυστέρησε όμως περισσότερο από το χρόνο που του είχε ορίσει ο Δαβίδ. 6 Έτσι ο Δαβίδ είπε στον Αβισάι: «Ο Σεβά, ο γιος του Βιχρί, θα μας προξενήσει μεγαλύτερο κακό απ’ ό,τι ο Αβεσσαλώμ. Πάρε τους άντρες της φρουράς μου και καταδίωξέ τον, για να μην καταλάβει οχυρωμένες πόλεις και μας διαφύγει». 7 Έτσι ο στρατός του Ιωάβ και μαζί οι Χερεθαίοι και οι Φελεθαίοι της βασιλικής φρουράς, δηλαδή όλοι οι εκπαιδευμένοι πολεμιστές, ακολούθησαν τον Αβισάι και βγήκαν από την Ιερουσαλήμ για να καταδιώξουν το Σεβά, γιο του Βιχρί.

8 Όταν πλησίασαν στο Μεγάλο Λιθάρι κοντά στη Γαβαών, τους συνάντησε ο Αμασά. Ο Ιωάβ ήταν ντυμένος την πολεμική του εξάρτυση ζωσμένος το σπαθί του, που το ’χε δέσει στο γοφό του, μέσα στη θήκη του. Καθώς προχώρησε, όμως, το σπαθί του έπεσε από τη θήκη. 9 «Είσαι καλά, αδερφέ μου;» είπε στον Αμασά ο Ιωάβ και με το δεξί του χέρι έπιασε το γένι του για να τον φιλήσει. 10 Ο Αμασά δεν πρόσεξε το ξίφος, που κρατούσε ο Ιωάβ στο αριστερό του χέρι. Ο τελευταίος τού το κάρφωσε στην κοιλιά και ξεχύθηκαν τα σπλάχνα του στη γη· πέθανε αμέσως, δίχως δεύτερο χτύπημα.

Ύστερα ο Ιωάβ κι ο αδερφός του ο Αβισάι καταδίωξαν το Σεβά, γιο του Βιχρί. 11,12 Ο Αμασά κοιτόταν καταμεσίς του δρόμου μέσα στο αίμα. Ο Ιωάβ είχε βάλει κοντά στο πτώμα έναν από τους άντρες του να φωνάζει προς τους στρατιώτες της φυλής Ιούδα: «Όποιος αγαπάει τον Ιωάβ κι όποιος ανήκει στο Δαβίδ ας ακολουθήσει τον Ιωάβ». Παρατήρησε όμως ο στρατιώτης εκείνος ότι όλοι όσοι περνούσαν από ’κει κοντοστέκονταν. Γι’ αυτό μετέφερε τον Αμασά έξω απ’ το δρόμο, σ’ ένα χωράφι, κι έριξε πάνω του ένα ρούχο. 13 Μετά απ’ αυτό όλοι ακολούθησαν τον Ιωάβ, στην καταδίωξη του Σεβά, γιου του Βιχρί.

14 Ο Σεβά πέρασε από όλες τις φυλές του Ισραήλ ως την πόλη Αβέλ- Βαιθ-Μααχά κι όλοι οι Βιχρίτες συγκεντρώθηκαν και τον ακολούθησαν. 15 Ο στρατός του Ιωάβ ήρθε και τον πολιόρκησε στην πόλη. Κατασκεύασαν γύρω της ανάχωμα που έφτανε ως το προτείχισμα, κι όλοι οι στρατιώτες έσκαβαν κάτω από το τείχος για να το γκρεμίσουν.

16 Τότε μια γυναίκα μυαλωμένη φώναξε από την πόλη: «Ακούστε, ακούστε! Πέστε στον Ιωάβ να πλησιάσει ως εδώ· θέλω να του μιλήσω». 17 Ο Ιωάβ πλησίασε. «Εσύ είσαι ο Ιωάβ;» τον ρώτησε η γυναίκα. «Εγώ είμαι», απάντησε εκείνος. Η γυναίκα τού είπε: «Άκου τα λόγια της δούλης σου». «Ακούω», είπε αυτός.

18 Η γυναίκα συνέχισε: «Τον παλιό καιρό συνήθιζαν να λένε, "πήγαινε πάντως να πάρεις συμβουλή στην Αβέλ" κι έτσι η υπόθεση τακτοποιόταν. 19 Η πόλη μας είναι μια από τις πιο ειρηνικές και πιστές του Ισραήλ. Εσύ τώρα ζητάς να καταστρέψεις μια πόλη από τις σπουδαιότερες του Ισραήλ. Γιατί θέλεις ν’ αφανίσεις την ιδιοκτησία του Κυρίου;»

20 «Εγώ ποτέ!» φώναξε ο Ιωάβ. «Καμιά πρόθεση δεν έχω να καταστρέψω και ν’ αφανίσω. 21 Δεν υπάρχει τέτοιο θέμα· πρόκειται μόνο για κάποιον από την ορεινή περιοχή του Εφραΐμ, με τ’ όνομα Σεβά, γιο του Βιχρί, που επαναστάτησε εναντίον του βασιλιά Δαβίδ. Παραδώστε μόνον αυτόν, κι εγώ θα λύσω την πολιορκία». «Τότε καλά», είπε η γυναίκα στον Ιωάβ. «Θα σου ρίξουν το κεφάλι του από το τείχος».

22 Η γυναίκα μπήκε στην πόλη και μίλησε σ’ όλο τον λαό με φρόνηση. Έκοψαν λοιπόν το κεφάλι του Σεβά και το έριξαν στον Ιωάβ. Τότε αυτός σάλπισε με τη σάλπιγγα κι αμέσως οι στρατιώτες έλυσαν την πολιορκία και πήγε καθένας σπίτι του. Ο Ιωάβ γύρισε στην Ιερουσαλήμ, στο βασιλιά.

23 Ο Ιωάβ ήταν γενικός αρχιστράτηγος του ισραηλιτικού στρατού. Ο Βεναΐας, γιος του Ιεωϊαδά, ήταν αρχηγός των Χερεθαίων και των Φελεθαίων. 24 Ο Αδωράμ ήταν επόπτης των καταναγκαστικών έργων κι ο Ιωσαφάτ, γιος του Αχιλούδ, ήταν υπομνηματογράφος. 25 Ο Σεβά ήταν γραμματέας του κράτους και ο Σαδώκ κι ο Αβιάθαρ ήταν ιερείς. 26 Επίσης ο Ιρά, ο Ιαειρίτης, ήταν κι αυτός ιερέας του Δαβίδ.

1 And there happened to be there a man of Belial, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite: and he blew a trumpet, and said, We have no part in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to his tents, O Israel. 2 So every man of Israel went up from after David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri: but the men of Judah clave unto their king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem.

3 And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in ward, and fed them, but went not in unto them. And Joab’s garment that he had put on was girded unto him, and upon it a girdle with a sword fastened upon his loins in the sheath thereof; and as he went forth it fell out. 9 And Joab said to Amasa, Art thou in health, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him. 10 But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab’s hand: so he smote him therewith in the fifth rib, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. So Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.*20.10 struck…: Heb. doubled not his stroke 11 And one of Joab’s men stood by him, and said, He that favoureth Joab, and he that is for David, let him go after Joab. 12 And Amasa wallowed in blood in the midst of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he removed Amasa out of the highway into the field, and cast a cloth upon him, when he saw that every one that came by him stood still. 13 When he was removed out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

14 And he went through all the tribes of Israel unto Abel, and to Beth-maachah, and all the Berites: and they were gathered together, and went also after him. 15 And they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maachah, and they cast up a bank against the city, and it stood in the trench: and all the people that were with Joab battered the wall, to throw it down.*20.15 in the trench: or, against the outmost wall*20.15 battered: Heb. marred to throw down

16 Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, I pray you, unto Joab, Come near hither, that I may speak with thee. 17 And when he was come near unto her, the woman said, Art thou Joab? And he answered, I am he. Then she said unto him, Hear the words of thine handmaid. And he answered, I do hear. 18 Then she spake, saying, They were wont to speak in old time, saying, They shall surely ask counsel at Abel: and so they ended the matter.*20.18 They were…: or, They plainly spake in the beginning, saying, Surely they will ask of Abel, and so make an end 19 I am one of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: thou seekest to destroy a city and a mother in Israel: why wilt thou swallow up the inheritance of the LORD? 20 And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy. 21 The matter is not so: but a man of mount Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David: deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and cast it out to Joab. And he blew a trumpet, and they retired from the city, every man to his tent.
