1 Μια μέρα η Νωεμίν είπε στη Ρουθ: «Κόρη μου, πρέπει να σου βρω έναν σύζυγο, που να σε κάνει ευτυχισμένη. 2 Πρόσεξε τώρα: Ο Βοόζ, που δούλευες με τις υπηρέτριές του, είναι συγγενής μας· κι απόψε θα πάει στο αλώνι του να λιχνίσει το κριθάρι. 3 Λούσου, λοιπόν, κι αλείψου με αρώματα, βάλε τα γιορτινά σου και κατέβα στο αλώνι· αλλά μην του φανερωθείς ωσότου τελειώσει το φαγητό και το πιοτό του. 4 Όταν πάει να πλαγιάσει, φρόντισε να δεις πού θα κοιμηθεί. Πλησίασε, σήκωσε τα σκεπάσματα των ποδιών του και πλάγιασε εκεί.*Κίνηση που δηλώνει απαίτηση εκ μέρους της Ρουθ για προστασία. Μετά αυτός θα σου πει τι να κάνεις».

5 Η Ρουθ της απάντησε: «Θα κάνω όλα όσα μου είπες». 6 Κατέβηκε, λοιπόν, στο αλώνι κι έκανε όλα όσα της είχε υποδείξει η πεθερά της. 7 Ο Βοόζ αφού έφαγε και ήπιε κι ήταν σε εξαιρετική διάθεση, πήγε και πλάγιασε στην άκρη του σωρού του κριθαριού.*Προφανώς για να φυλάει ο ίδιος τη σοδειά του τη νύχτα. Τότε η Ρουθ ήρθε ήσυχα ήσυχα, σήκωσε τα σκεπάσματα των ποδιών του και πλάγιασε εκεί. 8 Γύρω στα μεσάνυχτα, ο Βοόζ ξύπνησε απότομα, ανασηκώθηκε και είδε μια γυναίκα να κοιμάται στα πόδια του. 9 «Ποια είσ’ εσύ;» τη ρώτησε. Κι αυτή απάντησε: «Εγώ είμαι η Ρουθ, η δούλη σου. Πάρε με στην προστασία σου, γιατί εσύ είσαι ο κοντινότερος συγγενής μου».

10 Τότε ο Βοόζ είπε: «Ο Κύριος να σ’ ευλογεί, κόρη μου! Αυτό που κάνεις τώρα δείχνει την πιστότητά σου στην οικογένεια της πεθεράς σου, περισσότερο απ’ ό,τι το δείχνει η προηγούμενη πράξη σου. Πράγματι, δεν αναζήτησες για άντρα σου κάποιον νεαρό, φτωχό ή πλούσιο. 11 Τώρα, λοιπόν, κόρη μου, μη φοβάσαι. Εγώ θα κάνω για σένα ό,τι μου ζητήσεις, γιατί όλη η πόλη ξέρει ότι είσαι ενάρετη γυναίκα. 12 Είν’ αλήθεια ότι εγώ είμαι ο πλησιέστερος συγγενής σου, αλλά υπάρχει κι άλλος ένας, πιο κοντινός συγγενής από μένα. 13 Μείνε απόψε εδώ, και το πρωί, αν θέλει να σε παντρευτεί εκείνος, έχει καλώς, ας σε παντρευτεί. Αν όμως δε θελήσει, τότε θα σε παντρευτώ εγώ· σου το υπόσχομαι ενώπιον του αληθινού Θεού. Κοιμήσου ως το πρωί».

14 Έτσι η Ρουθ ξάπλωσε εκεί στα πόδια του Βοόζ ως το πρωί. Αλλά σηκώθηκε στο σύθαμπο, πριν ακόμη φωτίσει και μπορέσει κανείς να τη δει. Εκείνος της είπε: «Ας μη γίνει γνωστό ότι ήρθε γυναίκα στο αλώνι». 15 Μετά της είπε: «Φέρε την κάπα που έχεις στους ώμους σου και άπλωσέ την». Εκείνη την άπλωσε κι ο Βοόζ μέτρησε και της άδειασε μέσα έξι γαβάθες κριθάρι· τη βοήθησε να το φορτωθεί και η Ρουθ ήρθε στην πόλη.

16 Όταν γύρισε στην πεθερά της, εκείνη τη ρώτησε: Πώς τα πήγες κόρη μου; Κι εκείνη της διηγήθηκε όλα όσα έκανε γι’ αυτήν ο Βοόζ. 17 «Μου έδωσε κι αυτές τις έξι γαβάθες το κριθάρι», πρόσθεσε, «και μου είπε πως δε θα πρέπει να πάω μ’ άδεια χέρια στην πεθερά μου». 18 Τότε η Νωεμίν απάντησε: «Περίμενε, κόρη μου, ώσπου να δεις πώς θα πάει το πράγμα, γιατί αυτός ο άνθρωπος δεν θα ησυχάσει αν δεν τελειώσει αυτή την υπόθεση σήμερα».

6 And she went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her mother in law bade her. 7 And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.

8 And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.*3.8 turned: or, took hold on 9 And he said, Who art thou? 14 And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor. 15 Also he said, Bring the vail that thou hast upon thee, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and she went into the city.*3.15 vail: or, sheet, or, apron 16 And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her. 17 And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law. 18 Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.
