1 Ο Βοόζ πήγε στην πύλη και κάθισε εκεί. Μετά από λίγο περνούσε από ’κει ο στενός συγγενής του Ελιμέλεχ, για τον οποίο είχε μιλήσει ο Βοόζ στη Ρουθ. «Έλα και κάθισε εδώ», του είπε ο Βοόζ. Εκείνος γύρισε και κάθισε. 2 Τότε ο Βοόζ πήρε δέκα άντρες από τους πρεσβυτέρους της πόλης και τους είπε: «Καθίστε εδώ». Και κάθισαν. 3 Μετά είπε στον πλησιέστερο συγγενή: «Η Νωεμίν, που γύρισε από τη Μωάβ, πουλάει το μερίδιο του χωραφιού που ανήκει στο συγγενή μας τον Ελιμέλεχ. 4 Σκέφτηκα να σου το ανακοινώσω αυτό και να σου προτείνω να αγοράσεις το χωράφι εδώ μπροστά στους κατοίκους και στους πρεσβυτέρους του λαού μου, γιατί εσύ είσαι ο πλησιέστερος συγγενής. Αν θέλεις, λοιπόν, να ασκήσεις το δίκαιωμά σου της εξαγοράς, καλώς· αν όχι, πες το μου να το ξέρω· γιατί δεν υπάρχει άλλος στενότερος συγγενής να το αγοράσει. Μετά από σένα είμαι εγώ».

Εκείνος απάντησε: «Θα το αγοράσω».

5 Τότε ο Βοόζ είπε: «Αν αγοράσεις το χωράφι από τη Νωεμίν, πρέπει να πάρεις γυναίκα σου και τη Ρουθ, τη Μωαβίτισσα, τη χήρα του γιου της, ώστε η ιδιοκτησία του χωραφιού να παραμείνει στην οικογένεια του νεκρού άντρα της».*Για όλο το νομικό πλαίσιο βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 2:20.

6 Ο άλλος συγγενής απάντησε: «Εγώ δεν μπορώ να εκπληρώσω το συγγενικό μου χρέος, γιατί έτσι καταστρέφω τη δική μου ιδιοκτησία· ανάλαβε εσύ το δικαίωμά μου της εξαγοράς. Εγώ δεν προτίθεμαι να αγοράσω το χωράφι».

7 (Υπήρχε παλιά ένα έθιμο στο λαό Ισραήλ, σχετικά με την εξαγορά και την ανταλλαγή, για την εγκυρότητα των συμφωνιών: Ο ένας έλυνε το σανδάλι του και το έδινε στον άλλον· αυτό ήταν σαν μαρτυρία ανάμεσα στους Ισραηλίτες). 8 Γι’ αυτό, όταν ο κοντινός συγγενής είπε στον Βοόζ, «αγόρασέ το εσύ το χωράφι», έλυσε το σανδάλι του και του το έδωσε.*και του το έδωσε, κατά τους Ο΄. Στο εβρ. η φράση αυτή λείπει.9 Τότε ο Βοόζ είπε στους πρεσβυτέρους και σ’ όλους τους παρισταμένους: «Σήμερα είσαστε μάρτυρες, ότι αγόρασα από τη Νωεμίν, όλα όσα ανήκαν στον Ελιμέλεχ, στο Χιλιών και στο Μαχλών· 10 κι ακόμα ότι πήρα για γυναίκα μου τη Ρουθ τη Μωαβίτισσα, χήρα του Μαχλών. Έτσι η περιουσία θα παραμείνει στην οικογένεια του νεκρού και θα δημιουργηθούν απόγονοι που θα διατηρήσουν το όνομά του ανάμεσα στους συμπατριώτες του και στις δικαστικές αρχές του τόπου του. Εσείς είστε σήμερα μάρτυρες γι’ αυτό».

11 Τότε όλοι οι παριστάμενοι εκεί στην πύλη και οι πρεσβύτεροι είπαν: «Ναι είμαστε μάρτυρες γι’ αυτό· ο Κύριος ας κάνει τη γυναίκα που μπαίνει στο σπίτι σου σαν τη Ραχήλ και σαν τη Λεία, που οι δυό τους γέννησαν γιους στον Ιακώβ, και να γίνεις ισχυρός στην Εφραθά και ξακουστός στη Βηθλεέμ. 12 Μακάρι οι απόγονοι που θα σου δώσει ο Κύριος απ’ αυτή τη νέα γυναίκα, να κάνουν την οικογένειά σου σαν την οικογένεια του Φαρές,*Φαρές. Πρόγονος του Βοόζ (βλ. Α΄ Χρ 2:5.9-12). γιου του Ιούδα από τη Θάμαρ».

13 Έτσι ο Βοόζ πήρε τη Ρουθ γυναίκα του. Ο Κύριος την ευλόγησε· έμεινε έγκυος και γέννησε γιο. 14 Τότε οι γυναίκες είπαν στη Νωεμίν: «Ας είναι δοξασμένος ο Κύριος! Σήμερα έκανε να γεννηθεί ένας κοντινός συγγενής για σένα, που τ’ όνομά του θα γίνει ξακουστό μέσα στο λαό του Ισραήλ. 15 Αυτός θ’ ανακουφίσει την ψυχή σου και θα σε φροντίσει στα γεράματά σου. Η νύφη σου, αξίζει για σένα περισσότερο κι από εφτά γιους γιατί σ’ αγαπάει και σου χάρισε αυτόν τον εγγονό».

16 Η Νωεμίν πήρε το παιδί, το κράτησε στην αγκαλιά της*το κράτησε στην αγκαλιά της. Κίνηση που δείχνει πρόθεση υιοθεσίας (πρβλ. Γεν 30:3-8· 48:5-12· 50:23). κι ανέλαβε την υποχρέωση της ανατροφής του. 17 Οι γειτόνισσες φώναζαν: «Η Νωεμίν απέκτησε γιο!» και το ονόμασαν «Ωβήδ»· αυτός είναι ο πατέρας του Ιεσσαί, πατέρα του Δαβίδ.

18-22 Η γενεαλογική γραμμή από τον Φαρές μέχρι το Δαβίδ έχει ως εξής: Χεσρών, Αράμ, Αμιναδάβ, Ναχσών, Σαλμών, Βοόζ, Ωβήδ, Ιεσσαί και Δαβίδ.

1 Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down. 2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down. 3 And he said unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech’s: 4 And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it.*4.4 I thought…: Heb. I said, I will reveal in thine ear 5 Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.

6 And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it. 7 Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel. 8 Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe.

9 And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, of the hand of Naomi. 10 Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day. 11 And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Beth-lehem:*4.11 do thou…: or, get thee riches, or, power*4.11 be famous: Heb. proclaim thy name 12 And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.

13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son. 14 And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.*4.14 left…: Heb. caused to cease unto thee*4.14 kinsman: or, redeemer 15 And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.*4.15 a nourisher of: Heb. to nourish*4.15 thine…: Heb. thy gray hairs 16 And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it. 17 And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

18 Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron, 19 And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab, 20 And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon,*4.20 Salmon: or, Salmah 21 And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, 22 And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.
