1 Το δεύτερο έτος της βασιλείας του Δαρείου, την πρώτη του έκτου μήνα, μίλησε ο Κύριος στον προφήτη Αγγαίο και του έδωσε εντολή να μεταδώσει μήνυμα στο διοικητή της Ιουδαίας Ζοροβάβελ, γιο του Σαλαθιήλ, και στον αρχιερέα Ιησού, γιο του Ιωσαδάκ.*Ο Δαρείος ήταν βασιλιάς των Περσών. – Το δεύτερο έτος... μήνα ήταν η εποχή προς το τέλος του Αυγούστου 520 π.Χ. – Ο Ζοροβάβελ, γιος του Σαλαθιήλ, κατά το Α΄ Χρ 3:17-19 ήταν εγγονός του βασιλιά Ιεχονία ή Ιωαχίν, και συνεπώς απόγονος του Δαβίδ. Ο βασιλιάς των Περσών τον είχε διορίσει διοικητή της Ιουδαίας.

2,3 Είπε, λοιπόν, ο Αγγαίος εκ μέρους του Κυρίου: «Ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος λέει: "ο λαός αυτός ισχυρίζεται ότι δεν ήρθε ακόμα ο καιρός να ξαναχτιστεί ο ναός μου. 4 Μα είναι τώρα καιρός να κατοικείτε εσείς σε σπίτια με ξύλινα φατνώματα, τη στιγμή που ο δικός μου οίκος είναι ακόμα ερειπωμένος; 5 Κοιτάξτε σε ποιο σημείο έχετε φτάσει: 6 Σπέρνετε πολλά μα συγκεντρώνετε λίγα· τρώτε αλλά δε χορταίνετε· πίνετε μα δεν ευχαριστιέστε· ντύνεστε αλλά δε ζεσταίνεστε και του εργάτη ο μισθός μπαίνει σε τρύπια τσέπη".

7 »Γι’ αυτό, λέει ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος: "σκεφτείτε το κατάντημά σας. 8 Μετά ανεβείτε στο βουνό και φέρτε ξύλα και ξαναχτίστε το ναό για να μ’ ευαρεστήσετε και να με τιμήσετε. 9 Επιδιώκετε πολλά, μα λίγα κατορθώνετε. Στο σπίτι σας τα φέρνετε μα εγώ τα εξανεμίζω. Γιατί συμβαίνει αυτό; Επειδή ο ναός μου είναι ερειπωμένος, κι εσείς ασχολείσθε καθένας με το δικό του σπίτι! 10 Γι’ αυτό οι ουρανοί δεν έβρεξαν κι η γη αρνήθηκε να δώσει τους καρπούς της. 11 Έφερα ξηρασία στη χώρα σας· στα βουνά και στα σταροχώραφα, στ’ αμπέλια και στους ελαιώνες, σ’ όλα τα γεννήματα της γης. Άνθρωποι και ζώα υποφέρουν· ό,τι κι αν κάνετε είναι μια αποτυχία"».

12 Ο Ζοροβάβελ, γιος του Σαλαθιήλ, κι ο αρχιερέας Ιησούς, γιος του Ιωσαδάκ, καθώς και ο λαός που είχε έρθει από την αιχμαλωσία, δέχτηκαν τα λόγια που ο Κύριος, ο Θεός, τούς είπε μέσω του προφήτη Αγγαίου, και αναγνώρισαν ότι ο Κύριος τους τον είχε στείλει· τρόμαξαν μάλιστα που δεν είχαν υπακούσει στον Κύριο. 13 Τότε ο Αγγαίος, ο αγγελιοφόρος του Κυρίου, είπε στο λαό αυτό που ο Κύριος τον είχε διατάξει: «Εγώ θα είμαι μαζί σας. Εγώ, ο Κύριος, το λέω». 14 Έτσι ο Κύριος έδωσε φώτιση στο διοικητή της Ιουδαίας Ζοροβάβελ, γιο του Σαλαθιήλ, και στον αρχιερέα Ιησού, γιο του Ιωσαδάκ, και στο λαό που είχε έρθει από την αιχμαλωσία. Ήρθαν λοιπόν και εργάζονταν στο ναό του Κυρίου του σύμπαντος, του Θεού τους. 15 Το έργο άρχισε στις είκοσι τέσσερις του έκτου μήνα.

7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.*1.7 Consider…: Heb. Set your heart on your ways 8 Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD. 9 Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.*1.9 blow…: or, blow it away 10 Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit. 11 And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands.

12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the LORD. 13 Then spake Haggai the LORD’s messenger in the LORD’s message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith the LORD. 14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, 15 In the four and twentieth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
