1 Αλίμονο στην πόλη την ακάθαρτη και μολυσμένη, στην πόλη την τυραννική! 2 Δεν άκουσε τις προειδοποιήσεις του Κυρίου, δε διορθώθηκε. Δεν εμπιστεύτηκε στον Κύριο, δε στράφηκε προς το Θεό της. 3 Βρυχιούνται σαν λιοντάρια οι άρχοντές της, σαν πεινασμένοι λύκοι οι κυβερνήτες της· κόκαλο δεν αφήνουν για το πρωί. 4 Είναι οι προφήτες της ανεύθυνοι κι επίβουλοι. Οι ιερείς της βεβηλώνουν το ναό και αθετούν το νόμο του Θεού.

5 Κι όλα αυτά, μολονότι ο Κύριος τους συμπεριφέρθηκε με δικαιοσύνη και την πολιτεία τους δεν την εγκατέλειψε. Δεν κάνει αδικίες. Κάθε πρωί, αδιάκοπα, αποκαλύπτει τα προστάγματά του· αυτοί όμως συνεχίζουν να διαπράττουν την αδικία χωρίς ντροπή.

6 «Ολόκληρα έθνη εξολόθρευσα», λέει ο Κύριος. «Κατέστρεψα τα τείχη και τους πύργους τους, ερήμωσα τους δρόμους τους, κανείς δεν τους διαβαίνει πια. Ερήμωσα τις πόλεις τους· δε συναντάς ψυχή, ούτε περαστικόν ούτε και κάτοικο. 7 Έπειτα σκέφτηκα πως θα με σεβαστείτε, θα καταλάβετε το μήνυμά μου και δε θα χρειαστεί να κάνω πράξη την απειλή μου, να καταστρέψω την πόλη σας. Εσείς όμως κάθε φορά με πιο μεγάλο ζήλο ριχνόσασταν στη διαφθορά. 8 Για τούτο, περιμένετέ με ως την ημέρα που θα σηκωθώ να σας λεηλατήσω. Γιατί η απόφασή μου είναι να συναθροίσω έθνη και βασίλεια, για να ξεχύσω πάνω σας*πάνω σας. Το πιθανότερο κείμενο, επειδή αναμένεται η καταστροφή της Ιερουσαλήμ. Το εβρ. έχει «πάνω τους». την κατάρα μου, όλη τη λάβα της οργής μου. Με του θυμού μου τη φωτιά θα καταφαγωθεί η γη ολάκερη».

9 «Μετά απ’ αυτά», λέει ο Κύριος, «θα μεταστρέψω τους λαούς και θα εξαγνίσω τα χείλη τους για να προσεύχονται όλοι στ’ όνομά μου κι όλοι να με λατρεύουν με μια καρδιά. 10 Από τη μακρινή Αιθιοπία, οι διασκορπισμένοι του λαού μου θα ’ρθουν και θα μου φέρουν προσφορές.

11 »Δε θα ντρέπεστε πια εκείνη την ημέρα για καμιά από τις κακές σας πράξεις που μ’ αυτές επαναστατήσατε εναντίον μου· γιατί εγώ θα πάρω τους αλαζόνες απ’ ανάμεσά σας και θα πάψετε να κομπάζετε πάνω στο άγιο μου βουνό. 12 Θ’ αφήσω ένα υπόλοιπο ανάμεσά σας, από φτωχούς και ταπεινούς, κι αυτοί θα καταφεύγουνε σ’ εμένα. 13 Αυτό το υπόλοιπο του Ισραήλ δεν θα κάνει αδικίες, δε θα λέει πια ψέματα και δε θα κάνει απάτες. Θα είναι ήσυχοι να τρών’ και να κοιμούνται δίχως κανείς να τους τρομάζει».

14 Χαρείτε εσείς στην πόλη της Σιών! Φώναζε από χαρά, λαέ του Ισραήλ! Χαρείτε κι αναγαλλιάστε μ’ όλη σας την καρδιά, εσείς οι κάτοικοι της Ιερουσαλήμ! 15 Ο Κύριος δεν θα σας τιμωρήσει άλλο. Έδιωξε αυτός μακριά σας τους εχθρούς σας. Ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ, ο Κύριος ο ίδιος, είναι ανάμεσά σας· δεν έχετε να φοβηθείτε πια κακό.

16 Θα λέν’ εκείνη την ημέρα στην Ιερουσαλήμ: «Τίποτα μη φοβάσαι, πόλη του όρους Σιών, μην χάνεις το κουράγιο σου! 17 Ο Κύριος ο Θεός σου είναι μαζί σου, σε βοηθάει να νικήσεις ο δυνατός. Χαρά αισθάνεται για σένα· δεν σε απειλεί πια, γιατί σε αγαπάει. Χαίρεται και αναγαλλιάζει όταν σε βλέπει».

18 Λέει ο Κύριος: «Θα πάρω το βάρος της ντροπής από την Ιερουσαλήμ. Θα φέρω πίσω όλους εκείνους που ζουν μακριά της και δεν μπορούν να συμμετάσχουν στις γιορτές μου.*Θα πάρω... γιορτές μου. Η κατανόηση του στ. στα εβρ. παρουσιάζει δυσκολίες.19 Θα ’ρθεί καιρός που θα τιμωρήσω όλους εκείνους που σας έχουν καταπιέσει. Θα συγκεντρώσω τα παραπλανημένα πρόβατα και θα φροντίσω για τ’ ανάπηρα. Ένδοξους θα σας κάνω κι ονομαστούς σ’ όλη τη γη, εκεί που τη ντροπή είχατε δοκιμάσει. 20 Τότε είναι που θα σας συγκεντρώσω και θα σας φέρω εδώ. Θα σας κάνω ονομαστούς και ένδοξους ανάμεσα σ’ όλους τους λαούς της γης, γιατί θ’ αλλάξω την κατάστασή σας και θα το δείτε! Εγώ, ο Κύριος το λέω».

8 Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy. 9 For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.*3.9 language: Heb. lip*3.9 consent: Heb. shoulder 10 From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, even the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering. 11 In that day shalt thou not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be haughty because of my holy mountain.*3.11 because…: Heb. in my holy 12 I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of the LORD. 13 The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.
