1 Όταν πέθανε ο Εούδ, οι Ισραηλίτες δυσαρέστησαν πάλι με τις πράξεις τους τον Κύριο. 2 Και ο Κύριος τους παρέδωσε στον Ιαβίν, έναν Χαναναίο βασιλιά, που βασίλευε στην Ασώρ. Αρχηγός του στρατού του ήταν ο Σίσερα, που κατοικούσε στη Χαρώσεθ των Εθνών. 3 Αυτός είχε εννιακόσιες σιδερένιες άμαξες*σιδερένιες άμαξες. Βλ. υποσ. εις Ιησ 17:16. και καταπίεζε σκληρά τους Ισραηλίτες είκοσι ολόκληρα χρόνια. Έτσι οι Ισραηλίτες επικαλέστηκαν τον Κύριο να τους ελευθερώσει.

4 Εκείνο τον καιρό Κριτής του Ισραήλ ήταν η προφήτισσα Δεβόρα, γυναίκα του Λαπιδώθ. 5 Αυτή καθόταν συνήθως κάτω από έναν φοίνικα, που αργότερα ονομάστηκε «Φοίνικας της Δεβόρας», μεταξύ των πόλεων Ραμά και Βαιθήλ, στην ορεινή περιοχή της φυλής Εφραΐμ, και οι Ισραηλίτες πήγαιναν σ’ αυτήν για να δικάζει τις υποθέσεις τους. 6 Μια μέρα η Δεβόρα έστειλε και κάλεσε το Βαράκ, γιο του Αβινωάμ, από την Κέδες, στην περιοχή της φυλής Νεφθαλί, και του είπε: «Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, δίνει αυτήν την προσταγή: "πάρε μαζί σου δέκα χιλιάδες άντρες από τις φυλές Νεφθαλί και Ζαβουλών και πήγαινε στο όρος Θαβώρ. 7 Κι εγώ θα ξεσηκώσω το Σίσερα, αρχιστράτηγο του Ιαβίν, να ’ρθεί να σου επιτεθεί με τις άμαξές του και το πεζικό του στο χείμαρρο Κισών· και θα τον παραδώσω στην εξουσία σου"».

8 Ο Βαράκ της είπε: «Αν έρθεις κι εσύ μαζί μου, θα πάω· αν όχι, δεν πάω».

9 Εκείνη του απάντησε: «Θα έρθω, λοιπόν, μαζί σου. Η εκστρατεία όμως αυτή δε θα φέρει δόξα σ’ εσένα, γιατί ο Κύριος θα παραδώσει το Σίσερα σε μια γυναίκα». Έτσι η Δεβόρα σηκώθηκε και πήγε μαζί με το Βαράκ στην Κέδες.

10 Ο Βαράκ συγκέντρωσε εκεί τις φυλές Ζαβουλών και Νεφθαλί. Δέκα χιλιάδες άντρες ανέβηκαν στο βουνό ακολουθώντας τον· ανέβηκε και η Δεβόρα μαζί του.

11 Κοντά στην Κέδες ζούσε ο Χέβερ ο Κεναίος. Αυτός είχε αποχωριστεί από τους άλλους Κεναίους, απογόνους του Χοβάβ, ενός συγγενή του Μωυσή και είχε στήσει τη σκηνή του κοντά στη Βελανιδιά Σααναννείμ.*Σααναννείμ. Τοποθεσία στην περιοχή της φυλής Νεφθαλί, που απαντάται και εις Ιησ 19:33.

12 Όταν ανάγγειλαν στο Σίσερα ότι ο Βαράκ, γιος του Αβινωάμ, ανέβαινε στο όρος Θαβώρ, 13 αυτός συγκέντρωσε τις εννιακόσιες σιδερένιες άμαξές του, και όλο το στρατό του, και πήγε από τη Χαρώσεθ των Εθνών στον ποταμό Κισών. 14 Τότε είπε η Δεβόρα στο Βαράκ: «Πάμε, γιατί σήμερα ο Κύριος θα σου παραδώσει το Σίσερα· ο Κύριος ο ίδιος βαδίζει μπροστά σου». Ο Βαράκ κατέβηκε από το όρος Θαβώρ με τις δέκα χιλιάδες άντρες πίσω του. 15 Κι όταν αυτός εξαπέλυσε επίθεση, προκάλεσε ο Κύριος σύγχυση στο Σίσερα, στις άμαξές του και στο στρατό του. Ο ίδιος κατέβηκε από το αμάξι του κι έφυγε πεζός.

16 Αλλά ο Βαράκ καταδίωξε τις άμαξες και το στρατό των εχθρών ως τη Χαρώσεθ των Εθνών και κατέσφαξε όλους τους στρατιώτες του Σίσερα. Δεν έμεινε ούτε ένας ζωντανός.

17 Ο Σίσερα κατέφυγε τρέχοντας στη σκηνή της Ιαήλ, της γυναίκας του Χέβερ του Κεναίου. Εκείνο τον καιρό υπήρχε ειρήνη ανάμεσα στον Ιαβίν, βασιλιά της Ασώρ, και στην οικογένεια του Χέβερ. 18 Η Ιαήλ βγήκε να συναντήσει το Σίσερα και του είπε: «Έλα, κύριέ μου, έλα στη σκηνή μου, μη φοβάσαι». Μπήκε, λοιπόν, στη σκηνή κι αυτή τον έκρυψε με ένα σκέπασμα.

19 Της λέει: «Διψάω· δώσ’ μου σε παρακαλώ να πιω λίγο νερό». Εκείνη άνοιξε το ασκί με το γάλα, του έδωσε να πιει, και τον ξανασκέπασε. 20 Ο Σίσερα της είπε πάλι: «Στάσου στην πόρτα της σκηνής, κι αν έρθουν και σε ρωτήσουν αν υπάρχει εδώ κανείς, εσύ να τους απαντήσεις "όχι"».

21 Αποκαμωμένος καθώς ήταν κοιμήθηκε βαθειά. Τότε η Ιαήλ πήρε έναν πάσσαλο από τη σκηνή κι ένα σφυρί, πλησίασε αθόρυβα κι έμπηξε το παλούκι στο μηνίγγι του, έτσι που καρφώθηκε στη γη κι ο Σίσερα πέθανε.

22 Τότε έφτασε κι ο Βαράκ που καταδίωκε το Σίσερα. Η Ιαήλ βγήκε να τον προϋπαντήσει και του είπε: «Έλα και θα σου δείξω τον άνθρωπο που ζητάς». Ο Βαράκ μπήκε στη σκηνή και είδε το Σίσερα κάτω νεκρό, με το παλούκι στο μηνίγγι του.

23 Έτσι εκείνη την ημέρα μπροστά στους Ισραηλίτες ταπείνωσε ο Θεός τον Ιαβίν, το Χαναναίο βασιλιά. 24 Οι Ισραηλίτες εξαπέλυαν όλο και πιο ορμητικές επιθέσεις εναντίον του, ωσότου τον εξουδετέρωσαν.

1 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, when Ehud was dead. 2 And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles. 3 And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.

4 And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time. 5 And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Beth-el in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment. 6 And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the LORD God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun? 7 And I will draw unto thee to the river Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand. 8 And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go. 9 And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.

10 And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him. 11 Now Heber the Kenite, which was of the children of Hobab the father in law of Moses, had severed himself from the Kenites, and pitched his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim, which is by Kedesh. 12 And they shewed Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor. 13 And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles unto the river of Kishon.*4.13 together: Heb. by cry, or, proclamation 14 And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the LORD gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him. 15 And the LORD discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off his chariot, and fled away on his feet. 16 But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell upon the edge of the sword; and there was not a man left.*4.16 a man: Heb. unto one

17 Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite: for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.

18 And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And when he had turned in unto her into the tent, she covered him with a mantle.*4.18 mantle: or, rug, or, blanket 19 And he said unto her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him. 20 Again he said unto her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man doth come and enquire of thee, and say, Is there any man here? that thou shalt say, No. 21 Then Jael Heber’s wife took a nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died.*4.21 and took: Heb. and put 22 And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will shew thee the man whom thou seekest. And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the nail was in his temples. 23 So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel. 24 And the hand of the children of Israel prospered, and prevailed against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.*4.24 prospered…: Heb. going went and was hard
