1 Μετά το θάνατο του Ιησού, οι Ισραηλίτες ρώτησαν τον Κύριο: «Ποια από τις φυλές μας θα πάει πρώτη να πολεμήσει τους Χαναναίους;» 2 Ο Κύριος απάντησε: «Θα πάνε οι άντρες της φυλής Ιούδα· τους παραδίδω τη χώρα».

3 Τότε οι άντρες της φυλής Ιούδα είπαν στους άντρες της φυλής Συμεών, αδερφού του Ιούδα: «Ελάτε μαζί μας στη χώρα που μας δόθηκε με κλήρο, για να πολεμήσουμε τους Χαναναίους, κι εμείς πάλι θα ’ρθούμε μαζί σας να κατακτήσουμε τη χώρα που κληρώθηκε σ’ εσάς». Έτσι οι άντρες της φυλής Συμεών, πήγαν και πολέμησαν μαζί μ’ εκείνους της φυλής Ιούδα.

4 Ο Κύριος πράγματι τους παρέδωσε τους Χαναναίους και τους Φερεζαίους και σκότωσαν απ’ αυτούς δέκα χιλιάδες άντρες στη Βεζέκ. 5 Εκεί, μέσα στην πόλη της Βεζέκ, βρήκαν το βασιλιά Αδωνί-Βεζέκ· πολέμησαν εναντίον του και νίκησαν τους Χαναναίους και τους Φερεζαίους. 6 Ο Αδωνί-Βεζέκ, έφυγε για να σωθεί, αλλά τον καταδίωξαν, τον έπιασαν και του έκοψαν τα μεγάλα δάχτυλα των χεριών και των ποδιών του. 7 Τότε είπε ο Αδωνί-Βεζέκ: «Εβδομήντα βασιλιάδες με κομμένα τα μεγάλα δάχτυλα των χεριών και των ποδιών τους μάζευαν ό,τι έπεφτε κάτω από το τραπέζι μου. Ό,τι έκανα, ο Θεός τώρα μου το ανταπέδωσε». Τον έφεραν στην Ιερουσαλήμ και πέθανε εκεί.

8 Οι άντρες της φυλής Ιούδα πολέμησαν εναντίον της Ιερουσαλήμ, την κυρίεψαν, κατέσφαξαν τους κατοίκους της και παρέδωσαν την πόλη στη φωτιά. 9 Έπειτα έφυγαν για να πολεμήσουν τους Χαναναίους που κατοικούσαν στην ορεινή περιοχή, στην νότια περιοχή και κάτω στην πεδιάδα. 10 Χτύπησαν επίσης τους Χαναναίους που κατοικούσαν στη Χεβρών, πόλη που τ’ όνομά της μέχρι τότε ήταν Κιριάθ-Αρβά. Εκεί νίκησαν τις συγγένειες των Σεσαΐ, Αχιμάν και Ταλμαΐ.

11 Από ’κει οι άντρες της φυλής Ιούδα έφυγαν για να πολεμήσουν τους κατοίκους της Δεβείρ, που μέχρι τότε τ’ όνομά της ήταν Κιριάθ-Σεφέρ. 12 Ο Χάλεβ έκανε τη διακήρυξη: «Όποιος χτυπήσει την Κιριάθ-Σεφέρ και την κυριέψει, σ’ αυτόν θα δώσω την κόρη μου Αχσά για γυναίκα». 13 Την κυρίεψε ο Οθνιήλ, γιος του Κενεζίτη, νεότερου αδερφού του Χάλεβ, κι έτσι ο Χάλεβ έδωσε σ’ αυτόν την κόρη του για γυναίκα. 14 Την ημέρα του γάμου αυτή ζήτησε από τον Οθνιήλ τη συγκατάθεσή του να γυρέψει απ’ τον πατέρα της ένα χωράφι. Χτύπησε τα χέρια της πάνω από το γαϊδούρι, κι ο Χάλεβ τη ρώτησε: «Τι σου συμβαίνει;» 15 Αυτή του απάντησε: «Θέλω να μου δώσεις ένα δώρο. Η περιοχή που μου παραχώρησες νότια είναι άνυδρη. Γι’ αυτό να μου δώσεις πηγές με νερό». Έτσι ο Χάλεβ της έδωσε τις πηγές στα ορεινά και στα πεδινά.

16 Οι Κεναίοι, απόγονοι του πεθερού του Μωυσή, έφυγαν από την Ιεριχώ, την πόλη με τις φοινικιές, μαζί με τους άντρες της φυλής Ιούδα και πήγαν να εγκατασταθούν στην έρημο του Ιούδα, νότια της Αράδ, ανάμεσα στους Αμαληκίτες.

17 Οι άντρες της φυλής Ιούδα μ’ αυτούς της φυλής Συμεών, αδερφού του Ιούδα, πήγαν και χτύπησαν τους Χαναναίους που κατοικούσαν στη Σεφάθ, και κατέστρεψαν εντελώς την πόλη, η οποία από τότε ονομάστηκε Χορμά (Καταστροφή). 18 Οι άντρες της φυλής Ιούδα κυρίεψαν τη Γάζα, την Ασκάλωνα και την Ακκαρών μαζί με τα περίχωρά τους. 19 Ο Κύριος ήταν μαζί με τους άντρες της φυλής Ιούδα και κυρίεψαν την ορεινή περιοχή. Δεν μπόρεσαν όμως να εκδιώξουν τους κατοίκους της πεδιάδας, γιατί αυτοί είχαν σιδερένιες άμαξες. 20 Στο Χάλεβ έδωσαν τη Χεβρών, όπως είχε διατάξει ο Μωυσής. Κι ο Χάλεβ εκδίωξε τις τρεις συγγένειες των Ανακιτών, που κατοικούσαν εκεί.

21 Οι Βενιαμινίτες όμως δεν μπόρεσαν να εκδιώξουν τους Ιεβουσαίους, που κατοικούσαν στην Ιερουσαλήμ, κι έτσι αυτοί ζουν ακόμη μαζί τους στην ίδια πόλη μέχρι σήμερα.

22 Οι απόγονοι του Ιωσήφ πήγαν να πολεμήσουν εναντίον της Βαιθήλ, κι ο Κύριος ήταν μαζί τους. 23 Πρώτα, όμως, έστειλαν ανθρώπους να κατασκοπεύσουν την πόλη, που τ’ όνομά της ήταν άλλοτε Λουζ. 24 Οι κατάσκοποι είδαν κάποιον που έβγαινε από την πόλη και του είπαν: «Δείξε μας, σε παρακαλούμε, πώς μπορούμε να εισβάλουμε στην πόλη κι εμείς θα σου φερθούμε με καλοσύνη». 25 Αυτός τους έδειξε τις οχυρές θέσεις της πόλης, κι έτσι οι απόγονοι του Ιωσήφ μπήκαν σ’ αυτήν και κατέσφαξαν τους κατοίκους της. Εκείνο τον άνθρωπο όμως τον άφησαν να φύγει μαζί με όλη του την οικογένεια. 26 Αυτός πήγε στη χώρα των Χετταίων, κι εκεί έχτισε μια πόλη που την ονόμασε επίσης Λουζ. Αυτό είναι το όνομά της μέχρι σήμερα.

27 Οι απόγονοι του Μανασσή δεν μπόρεσαν κι αυτοί να εκδιώξουν τους κατοίκους από τις πόλεις Βαιθ-Σεάν, Τανάκ, Δωρ, και Μεγιδδώ κι από τα περίχωρά τους. Έτσι οι Χαναναίοι συνέχισαν να κατοικούν σ’ αυτήν την περιοχή. 28 Όταν οι Ισραηλίτες ισχυροποιήθηκαν, υποχρέωσαν τους Χαναναίους να εκτελούν καταναγκαστικά έργα γι’ αυτούς, αλλά δε μπόρεσαν να τους εκδιώξουν εντελώς.

29 Ούτε οι απόγονοι του Εφραΐμ μπόρεσαν να εκδιώξουν τους Χαναναίους που κατοικούσαν στη Γεζέρ, κι έτσι οι Χαναναίοι συνέχισαν να κατοικούν μαζί τους στην πόλη αυτή.

30 Επίσης οι απόγονοι του Ζαβουλών δεν μπόρεσαν κι αυτοί να διώξουν τους κατοίκους της Κιδρών και της Νααλάλ, κι έτσι οι Χαναναίοι συνέχισαν να κατοικούν μαζί τους και να εκτελούν καταναγκαστικά έργα.

31 Ούτε οι απόγονοι του Ασήρ μπόρεσαν να εκδιώξουν τους κατοίκους των πόλεων Ακκώ, Σιδώνα, Ααλάβ, Αχζίβ, Χελβά, Αφίκ και Ρεχώβ. 32 Γι’ αυτό η φυλή Ασήρ αναγκάστηκε να συγκατοικήσει με τους Χαναναίους που ζούσαν στη χώρα.

33 Επίσης οι απόγονοι του Νεφθαλί δεν μπόρεσαν κι αυτοί να διώξουν τους κατοίκους της Βαιθ-Σέμες και της Βαιθ-Ανάθ· έτσι εγκαταστάθηκαν ανάμεσα στους Χαναναίους που κατοικούσαν στη χώρα, αλλά τους υποχρέωσαν να εκτελούν καταναγκαστικά έργα γι’ αυτούς.

34 Οι Αμορραίοι περιόρισαν τους απογόνους του Δαν στα βουνά και δεν τους άφηναν να κατεβούν στην πεδιάδα. 35 Έτσι, οι Αμορραίοι συνέχισαν να κατοικούν στη Χαρ-Χέρες, στην Αϊαλών και στη Σααλβίμ. Όταν όμως οι απόγονοι του Ιωσήφ, ισχυροποιήθηκαν, τους υποχρέωσαν να εκτελούν καταναγκαστικά έργα γι’ αυτούς.

36 Βόρεια της Σελά, τα νότια σύνορα των Αμορραίων προχωρούσαν μέσα από την ανωφέρεια της Ακραββίμ.*ανωφέρεια της Ακραββίμ. Βλ. υποσ. εις Αρ 34:4.

1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them? 2 And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand. 3 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him. 4 And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men. 5 And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites. 6 But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes. 7 And Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. 9 And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.*1.9 valley: or, low country 10 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai. 11 And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher: 12 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife. 13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife. 14 And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou? 15 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

16 And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people. 17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah. 18 Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof. 19 And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.*1.19 drave…: or, possessed the mountain 20 And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.

21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

22 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el: and the LORD was with them. 23 And the house of Joseph sent to descry Beth-el. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.) 24 And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy. 25 And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family. 26 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.

27 Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land. 28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

29 Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.

31 Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob: 32 But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.

33 Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries unto them. 34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley: 35 But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.*1.35 prevailed: Heb. was heavy 36 And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.*1.36 the going…: or, Maaleh-acrabbim
