1 Ύστερα από λίγον καιρό, την εποχή που θέριζαν τα στάρια, ο Σαμψών επισκέφθηκε τη γυναίκα του και της έφερε ένα κατσίκι. Αλλά όταν ζήτησε να πλαγιάσει με τη γυναίκα του στο νυφικό δωμάτιο, ο πατέρας της δεν τον άφησε να μπει. 2 «Σκέφτηκα, αλήθεια», του είπε, «πως εσύ τη μισείς θανάσιμα, και γι’ αυτό την έδωσα στον κουμπάρο σου. Αλλά η μικρή αδερφή της είναι ωραιότερη από κείνην. Μπορείς να πάρεις αυτήν αντί για κείνην».

3 Τότε είπε ο Σαμψών: «Αυτή τη φορά δε θα φταίω εγώ για το κακό που θα κάνω στους Φιλισταίους». 4 Πήγε, λοιπόν, κι έπιασε τριακόσιες αλεπούδες, βρήκε και δαυλούς· έδεσε ουρά με ουρά τις αλεπούδες και έβαλε από έναν δαυλό ανάμεσα σε κάθε ζευγάρι ουρές. 5 Άναψε τους δαυλούς κι άφησε τις αλεπούδες ελεύθερες στα σπαρτά των Φιλισταίων. Έτσι κάηκαν τα πάντα· τα δεμάτια ως και τα αθέριστα σπαρτά, ακόμη και τ’ αμπέλια και οι ελιές.

6 Τότε ρώτησαν οι Φιλισταίοι: «Ποιος το έκανε αυτό;». Και τους απάντησαν: «Ο Σαμψών, ο γαμπρός του Τιμναθίτη, γιατί ο πεθερός του πήρε τη γυναίκα του και την έδωσε στον κουμπάρο του». Τότε ανέβηκαν οι Φιλισταίοι κι έκαψαν κι αυτήν και το σπίτι του πατέρα της. 7 Ο Σαμψών τους είπε: «Έτσι που φερθήκατε, δε θα ησυχάσω αν δεν σας εκδικηθώ». 8 Και τους χτύπησε αλύπητα με μεγάλη σφαγή. Έπειτα πήγε κι έμεινε σε μια σπηλιά του βράχου της Ετάμ.*Ετάμ. Απόκρημνα μέρη στην περιοχή της φυλής Ιούδα.

9 Οι Φιλισταίοι ανέβηκαν και στρατοπέδευσαν στην περιοχή της φυλής Ιούδα και απλώθηκαν ως τη Λεχί. 10 Οι άντρες της φυλής Ιούδα τους ρώτησαν: «Γιατί ήρθατε να μας χτυπήσετε;» Αυτοί αποκρίθηκαν: «Ήρθαμε για να δέσουμε το Σαμψών και να του κάνουμε ό,τι μας έκανε».

11 Τότε κατέβηκαν τρεις χιλιάδες άντρες της φυλής Ιούδα στη σπηλιά του βράχου της Ετάμ και είπαν στο Σαμψών: «Δεν ξέρεις ότι οι Φιλισταίοι μας εξουσιάζουν; Τι είναι, λοιπόν, αυτό που μας έκανες;» Εκείνος τους απάντησε: «Ό,τι μου έκαναν, αυτό τους έκανα».

12 Τότε του είπαν: «Εμείς ήρθαμε εδώ να σε δέσουμε και να σε παραδώσουμε στους Φιλισταίους». Και τους είπε ο Σαμψών: «Ορκιστείτε μου ότι δε θα με σκοτώσετε εσείς». 13 Του απάντησαν: «Όχι, αλλά θα σε δέσουμε γερά και θα σε παραδώσουμε σ’ αυτούς. Πάντως δε θα σε σκοτώσουμε». Τον έδεσαν, λοιπόν, με δύο καινούρια σχοινιά και τον έβγαλαν έξω από τον βράχο.

14 Όταν έφτασε στη Λεχί, οι Φιλισταίοι έτρεχαν με αλαλαγμούς να τον συναντήσουν. Τότε το Πνεύμα του Κυρίου ήρθε πάνω του, και τα σχοινιά που έδεναν τα μπράτσα του έσπασαν σαν λινές κλωστές καμένες στη φωτιά, και οι χειροπέδες του κομματιάστηκαν κι έπεσαν απ’ τα χέρια του. 15 Κάπου εκεί βρήκε το σαγόνι ενός πρόσφατα σκοτωμένου γαϊδουριού, το πήρε στο χέρι του και σκότωσε μ’ αυτό χίλιους άντρες.

16 Τότε είπε:

«Μ’ ένα σαγόνι γαϊδουριού τους ξέκανα,

μ’ ένα σαγόνι γαϊδουριού σκότωσα χίλιους άντρες».

17 Μετά απ’ αυτό, πέταξε το σαγόνι από το χέρι του. Κι ονόμασαν εκείνο τον τόπο Ραμάθ-Λεχί (Απόρριψη).

18 Ξάφνου δίψασε πάρα πολύ και φώναξε στον Κύριο: «Εσύ μέσω του δούλου σου έδωσες τη μεγάλη αυτή σωτηρία· και τώρα να πεθάνω από δίψα και να πέσω στα χέρια των απερίτμητων;» 19 Τότε ο Θεός έσχισε το κοίλωμα του βράχου που βρίσκεται στη Λεχί, και βγήκε από ’κει νερό· ήπιε ο Σαμψών κι αναζωογονήθηκε και έζησε. Γι’ αυτό ονόμασε την πηγή εκείνη Αιν-Ακκορέ (Πηγή Επικαλουμένου)· κι αυτή σώζεται μέχρι σήμερα στη Λεχί.

20 Ο Σαμψών κυβέρνησε τον Ισραήλ στις μέρες των Φιλισταίων για είκοσι χρόνια.

1 But it came to pass within a while after, in the time of wheat harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in. 2 And her father said, I verily thought that thou hadst utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to thy companion: is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her.*15.2 take…: Heb. let her be thine

3 And Samson said concerning them, Now shall I be more blameless than the Philistines, though I do them a displeasure.*15.3 more…: or, blameless from the Philistines though, etc 4 And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails.*15.4 firebrands: or, torches 5 And when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks, and also the standing corn, with the vineyards and olives.

6 Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they answered, Samson, the son in law of the Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion. And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire.

7 And Samson said unto them, Though ye have done this, yet will I be avenged of you, and after that I will cease. 8 And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam.

9 Then the Philistines went up, and pitched in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi. 10 And the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up against us? And they answered, To bind Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us. 11 Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.*15.11 went: Heb. went down 12 And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves. 13 And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.

14 And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.*15.14 loosed: Heb. were melted 15 And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith.*15.15 new: Heb. moist 16 And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men.*15.16 heaps upon…: Heb. an heap, two heaps 17 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand, and called that place Ramath-lehi.*15.17 Ramath-lehi: that is, the lifting up of the jawbone, or, casting away of the jawbone

18 And he was sore athirst, and called on the LORD, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand of thy servant: and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised? 19 But God clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof En-hakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.*15.19 En-hakkore: that is, the well of him that called or, cried*15.19 the jaw: or, Lehi, as called in this chapter 20 And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.
