1 Εκείνο τον καιρό, πριν ακόμη αναδειχθεί βασιλιάς στο λαό Ισραήλ, κάποιος Λευίτης που ζούσε στ’ απομακρυσμένα μέρη της ορεινής περιοχής της φυλής Εφραΐμ, πήρε για παλλακίδα του μια γυναίκα από τη Βηθλεέμ, στην περιοχή της φυλής Ιούδα. 2 Αλλά η παλλακίδα του τσακώθηκε μαζί του, τον άφησε και γύρισε στο πατρικό της σπίτι, στη Βηθλεέμ, κι έμεινε εκεί τέσσερις μήνες. 3 Ο άντρας της ξεκίνησε να πάει να τη βρει, για να τα φτιάξει πάλι μαζί της και να την κάνει να γυρίσει. Είχε μαζί του τον υπηρέτη του και δυο γαϊδούρια.

Αυτή τον υποδέχτηκε στο πατρικό της κι ο πατέρας της, όταν τον είδε, χάρηκε πολύ για τη συνάντηση. 4 Τον κράτησε, λοιπόν, ο πεθερός του στο σπίτι κι έμεινε τρεις μέρες· έτρωγαν κι έπιναν και περνούσαν τη νύχτα εκεί. 5 Την τέταρτη μέρα σηκώθηκαν νωρίς το πρωί κι ο Λευίτης ετοιμάστηκε να φύγει. Τότε του είπε ο πεθερός του: «Φάε πρώτα κάτι, για να έχεις δύναμη κι έπειτα φεύγετε».

6 Έτσι κάθισαν κι οι δυο τους στο τραπέζι, έφαγαν και ήπιαν· μετά είπε ο πατέρας της γυναίκας στο Λευίτη: «Μείνε, σε παρακαλώ, κι απόψε να διασκεδάσεις». 7 Ο άνθρωπος είχε σηκωθεί να φύγει, αλλά ο πεθερός του τον πίεσε, κι έτσι έμεινε και διανυκτέρευσε εκεί. 8 Την πέμπτη μέρα σηκώθηκε νωρίς το πρωί να φύγει. Αλλά ο πεθερός του τού είπε: «Φάε, πρώτα σε παρακαλώ. Και μείνετε ώσπου να πέσει ο ήλιος». Κάθισαν, λοιπόν, οι δυό τους κι έφαγαν.

9 Μετά ο Λευίτης σηκώθηκε να φύγει μαζί με την παλλακίδα του και τον υπηρέτη του. Αλλά ο πεθερός του τού είπε πάλι: «Κοίτα, η μέρα έγειρε και σκοτεινιάζει· περάστε, σας παρακαλώ, τη νύχτα σας εδώ. Το βλέπεις ότι νυχτώνει πια. Κοιμήσου εδώ τη νύχτα, να περάσεις καλά, κι αύριο σηκώνεστε νωρίς το πρωί για το ταξίδι σας και φεύγεις να πας σπίτι σου». 10 Αυτή τη φορά όμως ο Λευίτης δε θέλησε να διανυκτερεύσει εκεί. Σηκώθηκε κι έφυγε, κι έφτασε απέναντι από την Ιεβούς, δηλαδή την Ιερουσαλήμ, μαζί με τα δυο σαμαρωμένα γαϊδούρια του, την παλλακίδα του και τον υπηρέτη του.

11 Όταν πλησίασαν στην Ιεβούς, είχε πια αρκετά νυχτώσει κι ο υπηρέτης είπε στον κύριό του: «Έλα, σε παρακαλώ, να σταματήσουμε σ’ αυτή την πόλη των Ιεβουσαίων και να διανυκτερεύσουμε εδώ». 12 Αλλά ο κύριός του τού απάντησε: «Δε θα σταματήσουμε σ’ αυτή την πόλη των ξένων, που οι κάτοικοί της δεν είναι Ισραηλίτες, αλλά θα συνεχίσουμε ως τη Γαβαά. 13 Πάμε, να προσπαθήσουμε να φτάσουμε στη Γαβαά ή στη Ραμά κι εκεί να διανυκτερεύσουμε». 14 Έτσι συνέχισαν την πορεία τους.

Ο ήλιος είχε βασιλέψει όταν βρίσκονταν πια κοντά στη Γαβαά, που ανήκει στη φυλή Βενιαμίν. 15 Κατευθύνθηκαν, λοιπόν, προς τα εκεί για να πάνε να διανυκτερεύσουν στην πόλη.

Μόλις μπήκαν στην πόλη, στάθμευσαν στην πλατεία της, αλλά κανείς δεν τους πήρε σπίτι του για να κοιμηθούν. 16 Το ίδιο βράδυ, ένας γέροντας γύριζε απ’ τη δουλειά του στα χωράφια. Καταγόταν από την ορεινή περιοχή της φυλής Εφραΐμ αλλά ζούσε στη Γαβαά. Οι άνθρωποι του τόπου ήταν Βενιαμινίτες. 17 Όταν είδε τον ταξιδιώτη στην πλατεία της πόλης, τον ρώτησε: «Από πού έρχεσαι και πού πηγαίνεις»; 18 Εκείνος του απάντησε: «Πηγαίνουμε από τη Βηθλεέμ της περιοχής του Ιούδα στα απομακρυσμένα μέρη της ορεινής περιοχής της φυλής Εφραΐμ· από ’κει κατάγομαι. Είχα πάει στη Βηθλεέμ και τώρα επιστρέφω σπίτι μου, αλλά κανείς δε με πήρε να με φιλοξενήσει. 19 Έχουμε, ωστόσο, άχυρο και χορτάρι για τα γαϊδούρια μας· έχουμε ακόμα ψωμί και κρασί για μένα, για τη γυναίκα μου και για τον υπηρέτη που συνοδεύει τους δούλους σου. Δε μας λείπει τίποτα».

20 Ο γέροντας του είπε: «Μην ανησυχείς· εγώ θα φροντίσω για ό,τι χρειαστείς· πάντως δεν θα περάσεις τη νύχτα στην πλατεία». 21 Τον έφερε στο σπίτι του και έβαλε τροφή στα γαϊδούρια, οι ταξιδιώτες έπλυναν τα πόδια τους, έφαγαν και ήπιαν.

22 Ενώ αυτοί απολάμβαναν τη φιλοξενία, οι άντρες της πόλης, άνθρωποι ανήθικοι, περικύκλωσαν το σπίτι, χτυπούσαν την πόρτα και φώναζαν στο γέροντα, τον οικοδεσπότη: «Βγάλε μας έξω τον άνθρωπο που μπήκε στο σπίτι σου!» του έλεγαν. «Θέλουμε να πλαγιάσουμε μαζί του». 23 Ο οικοδεσπότης βγήκε και τους είπε: «Όχι φίλοι μου, μην κάνετε, σας παρακαλώ αυτό το κακό. Αφού αυτός ο άνθρωπος μπήκε να μείνει σπίτι μου, μην κάνετε αυτή την αισχρή πράξη. 24 Ακούστε: Έχω την κόρη μου που είναι παρθένα κι αυτός έχει μια παλλακίδα· θα σας τις φέρω έξω κι εσείς ατιμάστε τις και κάνετέ τους ό,τι σας αρέσει. Αλλά σ’ αυτόν τον άνθρωπο μην κάνετε αυτή την αισχρή πράξη».

25 Αυτοί όμως δεν ήθελαν ν’ ακούσουν. Τότε πήρε ο άνθρωπος την παλλακίδα του και τους την έβγαλε έξω. Τη βίασαν και ασέλγησαν επάνω της όλη τη νύχτα, ως το πρωί. Με την αυγή, την άφησαν ελεύθερη. 26 Όταν άρχισε να φωτίζει, η γυναίκα ήρθε κι έπεσε στην πόρτα του σπιτιού του γέροντα, όπου βρισκόταν ο άντρας της· κι έμεινε εκεί, ώσπου ξημέρωσε καλά.

27 Το πρωί, όταν σηκώθηκε ο άντρας της κι άνοιξε την πόρτα για να βγει να συνεχίσει τον δρόμο του, βλέπει την παλλακίδα του πεσμένη στην πόρτα του σπιτιού με τα χέρια της πάνω στο κατώφλι. 28 «Σήκω να φύγουμε» της είπε. Αλλ’ αυτή δεν απαντούσε. Τότε ο άντρας της, φόρτωσε το σώμα της πάνω στο ένα γαϊδούρι κι έφυγε για να πάει στον τόπο του.

29 Όταν έφτασε στο σπίτι του, πήρε ένα μαχαίρι και διαμέλισε τη νεκρή παλλακίδα του σε δώδεκα κομμάτια και τα έστειλε σ’ όλες τις φυλές του Ισραήλ. 30 Όσοι τα είδαν αυτά, είπαν: «Τέτοιο πράγμα δεν ξανάδαμε ούτε ξανάγινε από την ημέρα που οι Ισραηλίτες βγήκαν από την Αίγυπτο μέχρι σήμερα. Πρέπει να το σκεφτούμε, να το συζητήσουμε και να πάρουμε μια απόφαση».

5 And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.*19.5 Comfort: Heb. Strengthen 6 And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel’s father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry. 7 And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again. 8 And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel’s father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them.*19.8 until afternoon: Heb. till the day declined 9 And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.*19.9 draweth: Heb. is weak*19.9 the day groweth to an end: Heb. it is the pitching time of the day*19.9 home: Heb. to thy tent 10 But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him.*19.10 over against: Heb. to over against 11 And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it. 12 And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah. 13 And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah. 14 And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin. 15 And they turned aside thither, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging.

16 And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites. 17 And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou? 18 And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Beth-lehem-judah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.*19.18 receiveth: Heb. gathereth 19 Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing. 20 And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street. 21 So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

22 Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him. 23 And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly. 24 Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.*19.24 so vile…: Heb. the matter of this folly 25 But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go. 26 Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, till it was light. 27 And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold. 28 And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.

29 And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel. 30 And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
