1,2 Ο Αβιμέλεχ, γιος του Ιερουβάαλ, πήγε στη Συχέμ να μιλήσει σε όλη τη συγγένεια της μητέρας του από τη μεριά του πατέρα της. «Μιλήστε, σας παρακαλώ», τους είπε, «να σας ακούσουν όλοι οι κάτοικοι της Συχέμ και ρωτήστε τους: "τι είναι καλύτερο για σας: να σας κυβερνούν εβδομήντα άνθρωποι, δηλαδή όλοι οι γιοι του Ιερουβάαλ, ή να σας κυβερνάει μόνο ένας;" Θυμηθείτε, ακόμα, ότι εγώ είμαι σάρκα σας και αίμα σας». 3 Οι συγγενείς της μητέρας του, ανέφεραν όλα αυτά τα λόγια στους κατοίκους της Συχέμ και πήραν το μέρος του. Έτσι οι Συχεμίτες αποφάσισαν ν’ ακολουθήσουν τον Αβιμέλεχ, γιατί σκέφτηκαν: «Συγγενής μας είναι».

4 Έδωσαν, λοιπόν, στον Αβιμέλεχ εβδομήντα ασημένιους σίκλους από το ναό του Βάαλ-Βερίθ και μίσθωσε κάτι τυχοδιώκτες και άχρηστους τύπους, οι οποίοι έγιναν ακόλουθοί του. 5 Πήγε στο σπίτι του πατέρα του, στην Οφρά, και σκότωσε τους άλλους γιους του Ιερουβάαλ, τους αδερφούς του, εβδομήντα άντρες· τους σκότωσε όλους πάνω στην ίδια πέτρα. Έμεινε μόνο ο Ιωθάμ, ο μικρότερος γιος του Ιερουβάαλ, γιατί κατάφερε να κρυφτεί. 6 Τότε συγκεντρώθηκαν όλοι οι κάτοικοι της Συχέμ και της Μιλλώ, πήγαν στη Βελανιδιά της Συχέμ, πλάι στην πέτρα που είχε στήσει εκεί ο Ιησούς του Ναυή, κι ανακήρυξαν βασιλιά τον Αβιμέλεχ.

7 Όταν ανάγγειλαν αυτά τα γεγονότα στον Ιωθάμ, αυτός πήγε και στάθηκε στην κορφή του όρους Γεριζίμ και φώναξε όσο πιο δυνατά μπορούσε: «Ακούστε με», είπε, «κάτοικοι της Συχέμ, αν θέλετε και ο Θεός να σας ακούσει! 8 Κάποτε τα δέντρα πήγαν να διαλέξουν ποιον θα χρίσουν βασιλιά τους. Είπαν στην ελιά: "έλα να γίνεις βασιλιάς μας". 9 Αλλά η ελιά τούς αποκρίθηκε: "ν’ αφήσω εγώ το λάδι που παράγω, που μ’ αυτό τιμούν θεούς κι ανθρώπους για να κυβερνήσω τα δέντρα;" 10 Τότε τα δέντρα είπαν στη συκιά: "έλα εσύ να γίνεις βασιλιάς μας". 11 Μα κι η συκιά τούς αποκρίθηκε: "ν’ αφήσω εγώ τους ωραίους και γλυκούς καρπούς που κάνω, για να κυβερνήσω τα δέντρα;" 12 Τότε τα δέντρα είπαν στο αμπέλι: "έλα εσύ να γίνεις βασιλιάς μας". 13 Μα και το αμπέλι τούς αποκρίθηκε: "ν’ αφήσω εγώ το κρασί που βγάζω, που το χαίρονται θεοί και άνθρωποι, για να κυβερνήσω τα δέντρα;" 14 Τότε τα δέντρα είπαν στην αγκαθιά: "έλα εσύ να γίνεις βασιλιάς μας". 15 Και η αγκαθιά τούς αποκρίθηκε: "αν θέλετε στ’ αλήθεια να με χρίσετε βασιλιά σας, ελάτε να κρυφτείτε στη σκιά μου· αν δεν έρθετε, φωτιά θα βγει από τ’ αγκάθια μου και θα κατακάψει τους κέδρους του Λιβάνου"».

16 «Τώρα, λοιπόν», συνέχισε ο Ιωθάμ, «ενεργήσατε άραγε ειλικρινά και τίμια όταν κάνατε βασιλιά τον Αβιμέλεχ; Φερθήκατε σωστά στον Ιερουβάαλ και στην οικογένειά του; Του δείξατε καθόλου ευγνωμοσύνη για όλα όσα έκανε για σας; 17 Ο πατέρας μου πολέμησε για σας κι έβαλε σε κίνδυνο τη ζωή του, για να σας ελευθερώσει από τους Μαδιανίτες. 18 Κι εσείς σήμερα ξεσηκωθήκατε ενάντια στην οικογένεια του πατέρα μου, σκοτώσατε τους γιους του, εβδομήντα άντρες, πάνω στην ίδια πέτρα κι ανακηρύξατε βασιλιά των Συχεμιτών τον Αβιμέλεχ, γιο της δούλης του, επειδή είναι συγγενής σας. 19 Αν, λοιπόν, σήμερα ενεργήσατε ειλικρινά και τίμια απέναντι στον Ιερουβάαλ και στην οικογένειά του, τότε να τον χαίρεστε τον Αβιμέλεχ και να σας χαίρεται κι αυτός. 20 Αν όχι, φωτιά θα βγει από τον Αβιμέλεχ και θα κατακάψει τους κατοίκους της Συχέμ και της Μιλλώ· και φωτιά θα βγει από τους κατοίκους της Συχέμ και της Μιλλώ και θα κατακάψει τον Αβιμέλεχ».

21 Μετά ο Ιωθάμ έφυγε με βιάση και κατέφυγε στη Βέερ, μακριά από τον Αβιμέλεχ, τον αδερφό του.

22 Ο Αβιμέλεχ κυβέρνησε τον Ισραήλ τρία χρόνια. 23 Έπειτα έστειλε ο Θεός πνεύμα διχόνοιας ανάμεσα σ’ αυτόν και στους κατοίκους της Συχέμ κι επαναστάτησαν εναντίον του. 24 Έτσι θα πλήρωναν όλοι για τα κακουργήματά τους: Ο Αβιμέλεχ για το φόνο στη Συχέμ των εβδομήντα γιων του Ιερουβάαλ, των αδερφών του, και οι Συχεμίτες, γιατί είχαν βοηθήσει τον Αβιμέλεχ να σκοτώσει τους αδερφούς του.

25 Έτσι, για να κάνουν κακό στον Αβιμέλεχ οι Συχεμίτες, έστησαν ενέδρες στα γύρω βουνά και λήστευαν όλους όσοι περνούσαν από το δρόμο κοντά στην πόλη.*Αυτές οι ενέδρες στερούσαν από τον Αβιμέλεχ τους φόρους που είχε επιβάλει στους εμπόρους που περνούσαν από τη Συχέμ. Και τα ’μαθε αυτά ο Αβιμέλεχ.

26 Μια μέρα ήρθε στη Συχέμ ο Γαάλ, γιος του Εβέδ, με τους συγγενείς του· οι Συχεμίτες του έδειξαν εμπιστοσύνη. 27 Βγήκαν στα χωράφια, τρύγησαν τ’ αμπέλια τους, πάτησαν τα σταφύλια και γιόρτασαν· έπειτα μπήκαν στο ναό του Θεού τους, έφαγαν και ήπιαν, κι έβρισαν τον Αβιμέλεχ: 28 «Ποιος είναι πια αυτός ο Αβιμέλεχ», έλεγε ο Γαάλ, «που εμείς οι Συχεμίτες θα του είμαστε δούλοι; Ένας γιος του Ιερουβάαλ είναι, και κυβερνάει την πόλη μέσω του Ζεβούλ. Εσείς κοιτάξτε να τα ’χετε καλά με το Χαμόρ, τον ιδρυτή της Συχέμ. 29 Αν είχα εγώ αυτό το λαό στα χέρια μου, θα έδιωχνα τον Αβιμέλεχ. Θα του ’λεγα· "πάρε όλο το στρατό σου και βγες να με πολεμήσεις"».

30 Ο Ζεβούλ, ο άρχοντας της πόλης, έμαθε αυτά που είπε ο Γαάλ κι οργίστηκε. 31 Έστειλε, λοιπόν, κρυφά αγγελιοφόρους στον Αβιμέλεχ στην Αρουμά με το εξής μήνυμα: «Ο Γαάλ, γιος του Εβέδ, ήρθε με τους συγγενείς του στη Συχέμ και ξεσηκώνουν την πόλη εναντίον σου. 32 Σήκω, λοιπόν, τη νύχτα με τους άντρες σου και στήσε ενέδρα στην ύπαιθρο. 33 Το πρωί με την ανατολή του ήλιου, θα σηκωθείς νωρίς και θα εξαπολύσεις επίθεση στην πόλη. Κι όταν ο Γαάλ με τους άντρες του βγουν να σε αντιμετωπίσουν, τότε κάνε τους ό,τι περνάει απ’ το χέρι σου». 34 Ο Αβιμέλεχ σηκώθηκε τη νύχτα μαζί με όλους τους άντρες του κι έστησαν ενέδρα κοντά στην Συχέμ με τέσσερις ομάδες.

35 Όταν ο Γαάλ βγήκε από την πόλη και στάθηκε στην είσοδο της πύλης, τότε σηκώθηκε από την ενέδρα ο Αβιμέλεχ και η ομάδα του. 36 Ο Γαάλ τους είδε και είπε στο Ζεβούλ: «Κοίτα! Λαός κατεβαίνει από τις κορφές των βουνών». Ο Ζεβούλ του είπε: «είναι η σκιά των βουνών κι εσύ την παίρνεις για ανθρώπους». 37 Ο Γαάλ ξαναείπε: «Μα κοίτα, είναι λαός που κατεβαίνει από το βουνό που είναι στο κέντρο της περιοχής, και μια ομάδα έρχεται από τον δρόμο της Βελανιδιάς των Μάντεων».*Βελανιδιάς των Μάντεων. Πιθανόν άλλη ονομασία της Δρυός Μορέχ (Γεν 12:6· Δτ 11:30).38 Τότε ο Ζεβούλ του απάντησε: «Πού είναι τώρα τα μεγάλα λόγια που έλεγες: "ποιος είναι ο Αβιμέλεχ, που θα γίνουμε δούλοι του!"; Αυτοί είναι οι άντρες του που περιφρονούσες. Βγες, λοιπόν, τώρα να τον πολεμήσεις».

39 Έτσι, βγήκε ο Γαάλ επικεφαλής των αντρών της Συχέμ και πολέμησε εναντίον του Αβιμέλεχ. 40 Ο Αβιμέλεχ όμως τον έτρεψε σε φυγή και έπεσαν πολλοί θανάσιμα τραυματισμένοι, πριν φτάσουν στην είσοδο της πύλης. 41 Ο Αβιμέλεχ γύρισε στην Αρουμά κι ο Ζεβούλ έδιωξε από τη Συχέμ το Γαάλ και τους συγγενείς του, και τους απαγόρευσε να ξαναγυρίσουν στην πόλη.

42 Την άλλη μέρα οι άντρες της Συχέμ ετοιμάστηκαν να βγουν από την πόλη στους αγρούς. Ο Αβιμέλεχ ειδοποιήθηκε σχετικά, 43 και πήρε τους άντρες του, τους μοίρασε σε τρεις ομάδες και έστησε ενέδρα στην ύπαιθρο. Μόλις είδε το λαό να βγαίνει από την πόλη, όρμησε εναντίον τους και τους χτύπησε. 44 Ο ίδιος και η ομάδα του προχώρησαν προς την πόλη και στάθηκαν στην είσοδο της πύλης, ενώ οι άλλες δύο ομάδες επιτεθήκαν σ’ αυτούς που βρίσκονταν στους αγρούς και τους σκότωσαν. 45 Ο Αβιμέλεχ πολέμησε ενάντια στην πόλη ολόκληρη εκείνη την ημέρα και την κυρίεψε. Σκότωσε τους κατοίκους της, την ερείπωσε και κάλυψε το έδαφός της με αλάτι.

46 Όταν τα ’μαθαν αυτά οι κάτοικοι του φρουρίου της Συχέμ, κλείστηκαν όλοι στο υπόγειο του ναού του Βάαλ-Βερίθ. 47 Όταν ειδοποιήθηκε ο Αβιμέλεχ ότι όλοι οι κάτοικοι του φρουρίου της Συχέμ είχαν συγκεντρωθεί στο υπόγειο του ναού, 48 ανέβηκε μαζί με τους άντρες του στο όρος Σαλμών, έκοψε με το τσεκούρι ένα κλαδί δένδρου, το έβαλε στον ώμο του και τους είπε: «Ό,τι είδατε να κάνω, κάντε το κι εσείς γρήγορα». 49 Έκοψαν λοιπόν όλοι από ένα κλαδί κι ακολούθησαν τον Αβιμέλεχ· έβαλαν τα κλαδιά τους στην είσοδο του υπογείου, τους έβαλαν φωτιά και τα έκαψαν μαζί μ’ εκείνους που βρίσκονταν στο φρούριο. Έτσι πέθαναν όλοι οι άνθρωποι του φρουρίου της Συχέμ, περίπου χίλιοι άντρες και γυναίκες.

50 Έπειτα ο Αβιμέλεχ πήγε και επιτέθηκε στη Θαιβαίς· πολιόρκησε την πόλη και την κυρίεψε. 51 Υπήρχε όμως ένα ισχυρό φρούριο στο κέντρο της πόλης όπου κατέφυγαν και κλείστηκαν όλοι οι κάτοικοι, άντρες και γυναίκες, κι ανέβηκαν στη στέγη του φρουρίου.

52 Ο Αβιμέλεχ έφτασε στο φρούριο, του επιτέθηκε και πλησίασε στην πύλη για να του βάλει φωτιά. 53 Εκείνη τη στιγμή μια γυναίκα έριξε στο κεφάλι του ένα κομμάτι από μυλόπετρα και του ’σπασε το κρανίο. 54 Τότε ο Αβιμέλεχ φώναξε αμέσως τον νεαρό οπλοφόρο του και του είπε: «Τράβα το ξίφος σου και σκότωσέ με, για να μην πουν ότι με σκότωσε μια γυναίκα». Ο νέος τον διαπέρασε με το ξίφος του και πέθανε. 55 Όταν οι Ισραηλίτες είδαν ότι ο Αβιμέλεχ ήταν νεκρός, γύρισαν καθένας στο σπίτι του.

56 Έτσι ο Θεός έκανε να πέσει πάνω στον Αβιμέλεχ, το κακό που είχε κάνει στον πατέρα του, όταν σκότωσε τους εβδομήντα αδερφούς του. 57 Κι έκανε επίσης ο Θεός να πέσει πάνω στους κατοίκους της Συχέμ όλο το κακό που είχαν κάνει. Έτσι εκπληρώθηκε σ’ αυτούς η κατάρα του Ιωθάμ, γιου του Ιερουβάαλ.

1 And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying, 2 Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.*9.2 Whether…: Heb. 7 And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you. 8 The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us. 9 But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?*9.9 go…: or, go up and down for other trees 10 And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us. 11 But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees? 12 Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us. 13 And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees? 14 Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.*9.14 bramble: or, thistle 15 And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon. 16 Now therefore, if ye have done truly and sincerely, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands; 17 (For my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:*9.17 adventured…: Heb. cast his life 18 And ye are risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother;) 19 If ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you: 20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech. 21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

22 When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel, 23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech: 24 That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.*9.24 aided…: Heb. strengthened his hands to kill 25 And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech. 26 And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him. 27 And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.*9.27 merry: or, songs 28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him? 29 And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

34 And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies. 35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from lying in wait. 36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men. 37 And Gaal spake again and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.*9.37 middle: Heb. navel*9.37 Meonenim: or, the regarders of times 38 Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them. 39 And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech. 40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate. 41 And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem. 42 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech. 43 And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them. 44 And Abimelech, and the company that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them. 45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

46 And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith. 47 And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together. 48 And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.*9.48 me do: Heb. I have done 49 And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

50 Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it. 51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower. 52 And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire. 53 And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull. 54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died. 55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.

56 Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren: 57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
