1 Ο Βεν-Αδάδ, βασιλιάς των Συρίων, συγκέντρωσε όλο το στρατό του, που αποτελούσε συμμαχία τριάντα δύο ηγεμόνων, και πήγε με ιππικό και άμαξες και πολιόρκησε την πόλη της Σαμάρειας, με σκοπό να την κυριέψει. 2 Έστειλε αγγελιοφόρους στην πόλη στον Αχαάβ, βασιλιά του Ισραήλ, 3 οι οποίοι του είπαν εκ μέρους του: «Ο Βεν-Αδάδ λέει ότι το ασήμι σου και το χρυσάφι σου ανήκουν σ’ αυτόν· οι γυναίκες σου και οι πιο ωραίοι γιοι σου ανήκουν σ’ αυτόν». 4 Ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ του αποκρίθηκε: «Όπως τα λες, κύριέ μου, βασιλιά: Εγώ και όλα τα υπάρχοντά μου ανήκουμε σ’ εσένα».

5 Αλλά οι αγγελιοφόροι ήρθαν πάλι στον Αχαάβ και του είπαν: «Ο Βεν-Αδάδ λέει ότι έστειλε και σου ζήτησε να του παραδώσεις το ασήμι σου και το χρυσάφι σου, τις γυναίκες σου και τους γιους σου. 6 Αύριο, λοιπόν, την ίδια ώρα, θα σου στείλει τους ανθρώπους του και θα ψάξουν μέσα στο ανάκτορό σου και στα σπίτια των αξιωματούχων σου και θα βάλουν στο χέρι ό,τι πολύτιμο έχεις».

7 Τότε ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ κάλεσε όλους τους πρεσβυτέρους της χώρας και τους είπε: «Κοιτάτε να δείτε που αυτός γυρεύει το κακό μας. Έστειλε και μου ζήτησε τις γυναίκες μου και τους γιους μου, το ασήμι μου και το χρυσάφι μου κι εγώ δεν του τα αρνήθηκα». 8 Οι πρεσβύτεροι και ο λαός τού είπαν: «Μην τον ακούς και μην υποχωρήσεις». 9 Έτσι ο Αχαάβ απάντησε στους αγγελιοφόρους του Βεν-Αδάδ: «Να πείτε στον κύριό μου, το βασιλιά: Όσα έστειλες και ζήτησες από το δούλο σου την πρώτη φορά, θα σου τα δώσω, αλλά αυτό που απαιτείς τώρα δεν μπορώ να το κάνω».*Ο Αχαάβ δέχεται να παραδώσει τα πάντα, προκειμένου ν’ αποφύγει τον πόλεμο, αλλά δεν μπορεί να δεχτεί να έρθουν οι εχθροί και να λεηλατήσουν οι ίδιοι την πρωτεύουσά του.

Οι αγγελιοφόροι έφυγαν μ’ αυτή την απάντηση. 10 Ο Βεν-Αδάδ του ξανάστειλε αγγελιοφόρους και του παράγγειλε: «Να με τιμωρήσουν οι θεοί, αν δε φέρω τόσο στρατό εναντίον της Σαμάρειας, ώστε το χώμα της να μη φτάσει για να πάρει καθένας από τους στρατιώτες μου μια χούφτα απ’ αυτό». 11 Ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ του απάντησε με την εξής παροιμία: «Αυτός που ζώνεται τα όπλα, ας μην περηφανεύεται σαν εκείνον που τα αποθέτει». 12 Ο Βεν-Αδάδ ήταν σε συμπόσιο με τους άλλους ηγεμόνες στις σκηνές, όταν άκουσε αυτή την απάντηση. Αμέσως τότε διάταξε τους αξιωματικούς του και παρατάχθηκαν για να κάνουν επίθεση στην πόλη.

13 Τότε ένας προφήτης πλησίασε τον Αχαάβ, και του είπε: «Άκου τι λέει ο Κύριος: Βλέπεις όλο αυτό το μεγάλο πλήθος; Θα σου το παραδώσω σήμερα στην εξουσία σου κι έτσι θα μάθεις ότι εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος».

14 Ο Αχαάβ ρώτησε: «Με ποιον θα μου τους παραδώσει;» Ο προφήτης απάντησε: «Ο Κύριος λέει: Με τους νέους που στρατολόγησαν οι διοικητές των επαρχιών». Ο Αχαάβ ρώτησε: «Και ποιος θα διευθύνει τη μάχη;» «Εσύ», του απάντησε ο προφήτης.

15 Ο Αχαάβ πήρε αναφορά από τους νέους που είχαν στρατολογηθεί από τους διοικητές των επαρχιών και βρέθηκαν διακόσιοι τριάντα δύο άντρες. Μετά απ’ αυτούς, πήρε αναφορά απ’ όλο τον ισραηλιτικό στρατό και βρέθηκαν εφτά χιλιάδες άντρες. 16 Το μεσημέρι ο Αχαάβ εξαπέλυσε επίθεση, την ώρα που ο Βεν-Αδάδ μεθοκοπούσε στις σκηνές, μαζί με τους τριάντα δύο συμμάχους του ηγεμόνες. 17 Πρώτοι επιτεθήκαν οι νέοι των διοικητών των επαρχιών. Τότε ο Βεν- Αδάδ έστειλε μια περίπολο η οποία του ανέφερε: «Στρατός βγήκε από τη Σαμάρεια». 18 «Πιάστε τους ζωντανούς», διέταξε εκείνος, «είτε βγήκαν για να ζητήσουν ειρήνη, είτε βγήκαν για πόλεμο».

19 Στο μεταξύ είχαν βγει από την πόλη οι νέοι των διοικητών και ο στρατός τούς ακολουθούσε. 20 Καθένας τους χτυπούσε κι από έναν αντίπαλο, έτσι που οι Σύριοι τράπηκαν σε φυγή και οι Ισραηλίτες τους καταδίωκαν. Ο Βεν-Αδάδ διέφυγε πάνω σ’ ένα άλογο μαζί με το ιππικό του. 21 Ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ τους καταδίωξε, χτύπησε το ιππικό και τις άμαξες και κατέσφαξε τους Συρίους.

22 Ο προφήτης πλησίασε τότε το βασιλιά του Ισραήλ και του είπε: «Εμπρός! Πάρε θάρρος και κοίταξε καλά τι θα κάνεις, γιατί μετά ένα χρόνο ο βασιλιάς των Συρίων θα επιτεθεί εναντίον σου».

23 Οι άνθρωποι του βασιλιά των Συρίων του είπαν: «Οι θεοί τους είναι θεοί των βουνών, γι’ αυτό μας νίκησαν. Αν τους πολεμήσουμε στην πεδιάδα, τότε σίγουρα θα τους νικήσουμε. 24 Να τι θα κάνεις: Θα διώξεις τους ηγεμόνες να πάνε στον τόπο τους και θα βάλεις στη θέση τους διοικητές. 25 Κι εσύ ετοίμασε το στρατό σου, να φτάσει τα άτομα του στρατού που χάθηκε, καθώς και ιππικό, όσο το ιππικό που χάθηκε, και άμαξες όσες οι άμαξες που χάθηκαν. Θα πάμε να πολεμήσουμε τους Ισραηλίτες στην πεδιάδα και σίγουρα θα τους νικήσουμε».

Ο Βεν-Αδάδ άκουσε τη συμβουλή τους και δέχτηκε να την ακολουθήσει. 26 Μετά από ένα χρόνο επιθεώρησε το στρατό των Συρίων και τους οδήγησε στην Αφέκ για να πολεμήσουν τους Ισραηλίτες. 27 Οι Ισραηλίτες είχαν οργανωθεί κι αυτοί και είχαν ανεφοδιαστεί. Προέλασαν για να τους συναντήσουν και στρατοπέδευσαν απέναντί τους σε δύο ομάδες. Αυτοί έμοιαζαν σαν δύο μικρά κοπάδια κατσικιών, ενώ οι Σύριοι είχαν πλημμυρίσει όλη την περιοχή.

28 Τότε ο άνθρωπος του Θεού πλησίασε το βασιλιά του Ισραήλ και του είπε: «Ο Κύριος λέει: Επειδή είπαν οι Σύριοι ότι ο Κύριος είναι θεός των βουνών και όχι θεός των πεδιάδων, θα παραδώσω στην εξουσία σου όλο αυτό το μεγάλο πλήθος κι έτσι θα μάθετε ότι εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος».

29 Έμειναν στρατοπεδευμένοι ο ένας απέναντι στον άλλον εφτά μέρες. Την έβδομη μέρα άρχισε η μάχη και οι Ισραηλίτες θανάτωσαν εκατό χιλιάδες πεζούς Συρίους μέσα σε μια μέρα. 30 Όσοι επέζησαν, είκοσι εφτά χιλιάδες άντρες, κατέφυγαν στην Αφέκ· αλλά το τείχος της πόλης έπεσε πάνω τους.

Ο Βεν-Αδάδ τράπηκε σε φυγή και κρύφτηκε στην πόλη, στο πίσω υπνοδωμάτιο ενός σπιτιού. 31 Τότε του είπαν οι άνθρωποί του: «Έχουμε ακούσει πως οι βασιλιάδες των Ισραηλιτών είναι σπλαχνικοί. Να φορέσουμε, λοιπόν, πένθιμα τρίχινα ρούχα, να βάλουμε σχοινιά στο κεφάλι μας και να πάμε στο βασιλιά του Ισραήλ. Ίσως σου χαρίσει τη ζωή».

32 Ντύθηκαν, λοιπόν, στα πένθιμα, έβαλαν σχοινιά στο κεφάλι τους και παρουσιάστηκαν στο βασιλιά του Ισραήλ. «Ο δούλος σου ο Βεν-Αδάδ», του είπαν, «σε παρακαλεί να τον αφήσεις να ζήσει». Ο Αχαάβ απάντησε: «Ζει ακόμα; Είναι αδερφός μου!» 33 Οι απεσταλμένοι το πήραν αυτό σαν καλό σημάδι και βιάστηκαν να το επιβεβαιώσουν: «Αδερφός σου είναι ο Βεν-Αδάδ», είπαν. Ο βασιλιάς τότε τους είπε: «Πηγαίνετε και φέρτε τον εδώ».

Ο Βεν-Αδάδ ήρθε στον Αχαάβ, κι αυτός τον ανέβασε στην άμαξά του. 34 Ο Βεν-Αδάδ είπε στον Αχαάβ: «Θα σου επιστρέψω τις πόλεις που είχε πάρει ο πατέρας μου από τον πατέρα σου, και θα χτίσεις για τον εαυτό σου αγορές στη Δαμασκό, όπως είχε ο πατέρας μου στη Σαμάρεια». Και ο Αχαάβ απάντησε: «Με τη συμφωνία αυτή εγώ θα σε αφήσω ελεύθερο». Έτσι έκανε συμφωνία μαζί του και τον άφησε ελεύθερον.

35 Εκείνη την ώρα ο Κύριος διάταξε ένα μέλος μιας ομάδας προφητών να πει σ’ έναν άλλο προφήτη: «Χτύπησέ με, σε παρακαλώ». Αλλά ο άλλος αρνήθηκε να τον χτυπήσει. 36 Τότε ο πρώτος του είπε: «Επειδή δεν υπάκουσες στο λόγο του Κυρίου, όταν θα φύγεις από ’δω θα σε σκοτώσει ένα λιοντάρι». Πράγματι, μόλις ο προφήτης εκείνος έφυγε τον συνάντησε ένα λιοντάρι και τον κατασπάραξε.

37 Ο προφήτης συνάντησε έναν άλλο άνθρωπο και του είπε: «Χτύπησέ με, σε παρακαλώ». Ο άνθρωπος τον χτύπησε και τον πλήγωσε. 38 Μετά ο προφήτης έφυγε και στάθηκε στο δρόμο περιμένοντας να περάσει ο βασιλιάς, αφού προηγουμένως μ’ έναν επίδεσμο στα μάτια, είχε γίνει αγνώριστος.

39 Όταν λοιπόν περνούσε ο βασιλιάς, αυτός του φώναξε: «Ο δούλος σου βρισκόμουν στη μάχη, όταν με πλησιάζει ένας αξιωματικός και μου φέρνει έναν αιχμάλωτο με τη διαταγή: "φύλαξέ μου αυτόν τον άνθρωπο. Αν με οποιονδήποτε τρόπο χαθεί, τότε θα τον πληρώσεις με τη ζωή σου ή με ένα ασημένιο τάλαντο!" 40 Ενώ όμως εγώ ήμουν απασχολημένος από ’δω κι από ’κει, ο αιχμάλωτος εξαφανίστηκε». Ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ έβγαλε την απόφαση: «Αυτή είναι η καταδίκη σου. Εσύ ο ίδιος την αποφάσισες».

41 Τότε ο προφήτης έβγαλε γρήγορα τον επίδεσμο από τα μάτια του και ο βασιλιάς τον αναγνώρισε ότι ανήκε σε ομάδα προφητών.*Οι προφήτες που ζούσαν σε κοινόβια έφεραν πιθανώς κάποιο σημάδι στο μέτωπο ή ήταν κουρεμένοι. Εν προκειμένω ο προφήτης είχε καλύψει με τον επίδεσμο αυτό το όποιο σημάδι στο κεφάλι του.42 «Άκου τι λέει ο Κύριος:» είπε στο βασιλιά. «Επειδή άφησες ελεύθερο τον άνθρωπο που εγώ τον είχα για καταστροφή, θα πεθάνεις εσύ στη θέση του και ο λαός σου στη θέση του λαού του».

43 Ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ έφυγε και γύρισε στο σπίτι του, στη Σαμάρεια, πικραμένος και οργισμένος.

12 And it came to pass, when Ben-hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants, Set yourselves in array. 22 And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee. 23 And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. 24 And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms: 25 And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day. 30 But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and there a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men that were left. 31 And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life. 32 So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother. 33 Now the men did diligently observe whether any thing would come from him, and did hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Ben-hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben-hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot. 34 And Ben-hadad said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.*20.34 streets: or, market places

And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him. 37 Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee.
