1 Μετά από πολύν καιρό, την τρίτη χρονιά της ξηρασίας, μίλησε ο Κύριος στον Ηλία και του είπε: «Πήγαινε να παρουσιαστείς στον Αχαάβ, κι εγώ θα στείλω βροχή στη γη». 2 Ξεκίνησε, λοιπόν, ο Ηλίας να πάει να παρουσιαστεί στον Αχαάβ.

Στο μεταξύ η πείνα είχε επιδεινωθεί στη Σαμάρεια. 3 Ο Αχαάβ είχε καλέσει τον Οβαδία, προϊστάμενο του ανακτόρου, ο οποίος σεβόταν πολύ τον Κύριο. 4 (Όταν η Ιεζάβελ είχε διατάξει να εξολοθρεύσουν τους προφήτες του Κυρίου, αυτός είχε πάρει εκατό προφήτες, τους είχε κρύψει από πενήντα σε κάθε σπηλιά και τους προμήθευε ψωμί και νερό). 5 Ο Αχαάβ, λοιπόν, είχε πει στον Οβαδία: «Πάμε σε όλες τις πηγές και στους χειμάρρους της χώρας, μήπως βρούμε χορτάρι για να ταΐσουμε τα άλογα και τα μουλάρια μας· μην τ’ αφήσουμε να χαθούν».

6 Μοίρασαν, λοιπόν, τη χώρα μεταξύ τους ώστε να πάνε παντού. Ο Αχαάβ πήρε ένα δρόμο μόνος του και ο Οβαδίας πήρε άλλο δρόμο. 7 Στο δρόμο του ο Οβαδίας συνάντησε τον Ηλία. Τον αναγνώρισε και τον προσκύνησε. «Εσύ είσαι, κύριέ μου, Ηλία;» τον ρώτησε.

8 «Εγώ είμαι», του απάντησε εκείνος. «Πήγαινε να πεις στον κύριό σου ότι ο Ηλίας είναι εδώ».

9 Τότε ο Οβαδίας απάντησε: «Σε τι αμάρτησα και θέλεις να ρίξεις το δούλο σου στα χέρια του Αχαάβ, να με θανατώσει; 10 Μα τον αληθινό Θεό, το Θεό σου, δεν υπάρχει έθνος και βασίλειο που ο κύριός μου να μην έστειλε να σε αναζητήσουν. Κι όταν του έλεγαν ότι δεν ήσουν εκεί, ζητούσε από το βασίλειο ή το έθνος εκείνο, να βεβαιώσουν με όρκο ότι δεν σε βρήκαν. 11 Και τώρα εσύ μου λες να πάω να του πω πως είσαι εδώ; 12 Μα τώρα που θ’ αποχωριστούμε το Πνεύμα του Κυρίου θα σε πάει κι εγώ δεν ξέρω πού. Αν πάω να ειδοποιήσω τον Αχαάβ κι έπειτα δεν σε βρει, θα με σκοτώσει. Αλλά εγώ, ο δούλος σου, σέβομαι τον Κύριο από τα νιάτα μου. 13 Δεν έμαθες κύριέ μου, τι έκανα, όταν η Ιεζάβελ διέταξε να σκοτώσουν τους προφήτες του Κυρίου; Εγώ έκρυψα εκατό προφήτες, πενήντα σε κάθε σπηλιά και τους προμήθευα ψωμί και νερό. 14 Και τώρα μου λες: να πάω να πω στον κύριό μου πως ο Ηλίας είναι εδώ; Τότε είναι που θα με σκοτώσει!»

15 Ο Ηλίας απάντησε: «Μα τον αληθινό Θεό, τον Κύριο του σύμπαντος, που τον υπηρετώ, σήμερα θα παρουσιαστώ στον Αχαάβ».

16 Έτσι ο Οβαδίας πήγε να συναντήσει τον Αχαάβ και έδωσε σχετική αναφορά. Πράγματι ο Αχαάβ πήγε να συναντήσει τον Ηλία. 17 Μόλις τον είδε, του είπε: «Εσύ είσαι που αναστατώνεις τον Ισραήλ;» 18 Ο Ηλίας απάντησε: «Δεν αναστατώνω εγώ τον Ισραήλ, αλλά εσύ και η οικογένειά σου, επειδή αρνηθήκατε να υπακούσετε τις εντολές του Κυρίου και λατρέψατε τις θεότητες του Βάαλ. 19 Τώρα, λοιπόν, στείλε και συγκέντρωσέ μου όλους τους Ισραηλίτες, στο όρος Κάρμηλος· συγκέντρωσέ μου επίσης και τους τετρακόσιους πενήντα προφήτες του Βάαλ καθώς και τους τετρακόσιους προφήτες της Αστάρτης, τους προστατευόμενους της βασίλισσας Ιεζάβελ».

20 Ο Αχαάβ έστειλε μήνυμα σ’ όλους τους Ισραηλίτες, κι επίσης συγκέντρωσε και τους προφήτες στο όρος Κάρμηλος. 21 Ο Ηλίας πλησίασε το λαό και τους είπε: «Ως πότε εσείς θα αμφιταλαντεύεστε; Αν ο Κύριος είναι Θεός, ακολουθήστε τον· κι αν είναι ο Βάαλ, ακολουθήστε εκείνον». Ο λαός όμως δεν του απαντούσε τίποτα. 22 Τότε ο Ηλίας τούς είπε: «Εγώ απέμεινα μόνος προφήτης του Κυρίου, ενώ οι προφήτες του Βάαλ είναι τετρακόσιοι πενήντα. 23 Ας μας φέρουν δύο μοσχάρια κι ας διαλέξουν το ένα για τον εαυτό τους· ας το κομματιάσουν κι ας το βάλουν πάνω στα ξύλα· φωτιά όμως να μη βάλουν. Εγώ θα πάρω το άλλο μοσχάρι και θα το βάλω πάνω στα ξύλα και δε θα βάλω φωτιά. 24 Ας επικαλεσθούν αυτοί το όνομα του θεού τους και θα επικαλεστώ κι εγώ το όνομα του Κυρίου. Όποιος θεός απαντήσει με φωτιά, αυτός θα είναι ο αληθινός Θεός». Κι όλος ο λαός απάντησε: «Σωστά μίλησες».

25 Τότε ο Ηλίας είπε στους προφήτες του Βάαλ: «Διαλέξτε για τον εαυτό σας το ένα μοσχάρι και κάντε την αρχή, γιατί εσείς είστε και οι περισσότεροι. Επικαλεσθείτε το όνομα του θεού σας, αλλά φωτιά δεν θα βάλετε». 26 Αυτοί πήραν το μοσχάρι που τους έδωσε ο Ηλίας, το ετοίμασαν και προσεύχονταν στο όνομα του Βάαλ, από το πρωί ως το μεσημέρι, «Βάαλ, άκουσέ μας», φώναζαν, και χοροπηδούσαν γύρω από το θυσιαστήριο που είχαν κατασκευάσει. Αλλά καμιά φωνή και καμιά απάντηση δεν ερχόταν.

27 Το μεσημέρι ο Ηλίας άρχισε να τους εμπαίζει: «Φωνάξτε πιο δυνατά», τους έλεγε. «Θεός είν’ αυτός! Μπορεί να είναι βυθισμένος σε σκέψεις· μπορεί να είναι κάπου απασχολημένος ή να ταξιδεύει. Ίσως κοιμάται και πρέπει να ξυπνήσει!» 28 Τότε εκείνοι φώναζαν πιο δυνατά κι έκαναν χαρακιές στο σώμα τους, όπως συνήθιζαν, με ξίφη και με λόγχες, ώσπου το αίμα άρχισε να τρέχει πάνω τους. 29 Όταν πέρασε και το μεσημέρι, άρχισαν να προφητεύουν, μέχρι την ώρα της μεταμεσημβρινής αναίμακτης θυσίας. Αλλά καμιά φωνή ή απάντηση δεν ερχόταν, ούτε κάποιο σημάδι ότι είχαν εισακουστεί.

30 Τότε ο Ηλίας είπε στο λαό: «Πλησιάστε κι ελάτε κοντά μου». Κι όλος ο λαός πλησίασε. Ο Ηλίας ξανάχτισε το θυσιαστήριο του Κυρίου, που είχε καταστραφεί. 31 Βρήκε δώδεκα πέτρες, όσες ήταν οι φυλές των γιων του Ιακώβ, στον οποίο είχε πει ο Κύριος: «Ισραήλ θα είναι το όνομά σου». 32 Με τις πέτρες έχτισε θυσιαστήριο στο όνομα του Κυρίου και έκανε γύρω από αυτό αυλάκι που να χωράει δύο σέα σπόρου. 33 Στοίβαξε τα ξύλα, κομμάτιασε το μοσχάρι και το τοποθέτησε πάνω στα ξύλα. 34 «Γεμίστε», είπε, «τέσσερις κάδους νερό και χύστε το πάνω στο ολοκαύτωμα και στα ξύλα». Μετά είπε: «Κάντε το ίδιο για δεύτερη φορά». Και το επανέλαβαν. Και τους είπε πάλι: «Κάντε το και για τρίτη φορά». 35 Κι έκαναν το ίδιο για τρίτη φορά. Έτσι έτρεξε το νερό γύρω από το θυσιαστήριο, και γέμισε ακόμα και το αυλάκι.

36 Την ώρα, λοιπόν, της προσφοράς της αναίμακτης θυσίας, ο Ηλίας ο προφήτης πλησίασε στο θυσιαστήριο και είπε: «Κύριε, Θεέ του Αβραάμ, του Ισαάκ και του Ιακώβ, ας μάθουν όλοι σήμερα ότι εσύ είσαι Θεός στον Ισραήλ κι εγώ ο δούλος σου, και ότι εγώ έκανα όλα αυτά τα πράγματα σύμφωνα με το λόγο σου. 37 Απάντησέ μου, Κύριε, απάντησέ μου, ώστε να μάθει ο λαός αυτός ότι εσύ είσαι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός, και ότι εσύ θα ξαναφέρεις την καρδιά τους κοντά σου».

38 Τότε έπεσε η φωτιά του Κυρίου και έκαψε εντελώς το ολοκαύτωμα και τα ξύλα, τις πέτρες και το χώμα, κι έγλειψε ως και το νερό του αυλακιού. 39 Όταν το είδαν αυτό, έσκυψαν όλος ο λαός το κεφάλι τους και είπαν: «Ο Κύριος, αυτός είναι ο Θεός· ο Κύριος, αυτός είναι ο Θεός!» 40 Τότε ο Ηλίας τούς είπε: «Πιάστε τους προφήτες του Βάαλ· να μη σας ξεφύγει κανείς». Τους συνέλαβαν, κι ο Ηλίας τους κατέβασε στο χείμαρρο Κισών κι εκεί τους έσφαξε.*Κατά τη συνήθεια της εποχής (βλ. στ. 13), οι προφήτες ενός θεού που θεωρείτο αδύναμος θεωρούνταν ψευδείς μάρτυρες και θανατώνονταν ως τέτοιοι (πρβλ. Β΄ Βασ 10:18-25).

41 Ύστερα είπε ο Ηλίας στον Αχαάβ: «Πήγαινε τώρα να φας και να πιεις,*Εξαιτίας της μακρόχρονης ξηρασίας, οι αρχές είχαν προφανώς επιβάλει αναγκαστική νηστεία, όπως και σε άλλες εποχές θεομηνίας (πρβλ. Ιερ 36:9). γιατί ακούω κιόλας τον ήχο από το θόρυβο της βροχής». 42 Ο Αχαάβ πήγε να φάει και να πιει. Ο Ηλίας ανέβηκε στην κορυφή του Κάρμηλου, έσκυψε στη γη κι έβαλε το πρόσωπό του ανάμεσα στα γόνατά του, 43 και είπε στον υπηρέτη του: «Ανέβα και κοίταξε το δρόμο προς τη θάλασσα».

Ο υπηρέτης ανέβηκε και κοίταξε και του είπε: «Δεν φαίνεται τίποτα». Ο Ηλίας του είπε να κάνει το ίδιο εφτά φορές. 44 Την έβδομη φορά ο υπηρέτης είπε: «Βλέπω ένα μικρό σύννεφο, σαν ανθρώπινη παλάμη, που ανεβαίνει από τη θάλασσα».

Τότε ο Ηλίας είπε: «Πήγαινε να πεις στον Αχαάβ: Ζέψε τ’ άλογα και κατέβα για να μη σ’ εμποδίσει η βροχή». 45 Σε λίγο τα σύννεφα σκοτείνιασαν τον ουρανό και ξέσπασε θύελλα και δυνατή βροχή. Ο Αχαάβ ανέβηκε στην άμαξα κι έφυγε για την Ιζρεέλ. 46 Ο Ηλίας έσφιξε το ρούχο του στους γοφούς του και, με τη δύναμη του Κυρίου, έτρεξε πριν από την άμαξα του Αχαάβ κι έφτασε στην είσοδο της Ιζρεέλ.

7 And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah? 8 And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here. 9 And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me? 10 As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not. 11 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here. 12 And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth. 13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD’s prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water? 14 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he shall slay me. 15 And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely shew myself unto him to day. 16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel? 18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim. 19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table. 20 So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him.
